Abstract:The idea of photonic crystal came to be when E. Yablonovitch and S. John recommended a structure in 1987 having periodic alteration of refractive index in one or multiple directions. Photonic crystals have the potential to manipulate and tailor the flow of light across the crystal, which gives advantage to invent many photonic devices on the microscopic scale having very small footprints. In recent years several articles have been published on the advances of photonic crystal-based structures. This review article mainly focuses on the several fabrication techniques of photonic crystals and their applications in different fields. Several photonic crystal-based structures such as logic gates, optical sensors, polarization beam splitters, and absorbers for solar cells are reviewed in this paper to show recent advancements on this trending topic. Also, a brief review of the different steps of fabrication of photonic crystals and different fabrication methods proposed by researchers is articulated in this paper.

Abstract:A filling-factor-graded wavelike two-dimensional photonic crystal (2DPC) possessing a light-path bending effect that is polarization dependent is theoretically studied by using a qualitative analysis of the isofrequency curves. The numerical simulation results obtained by using the finite-difference time-domain method demonstrate that such a graded 2DPC has potential applications in a polarization splitter and a parallel-plane resonant cavity. A new kind of waveguide structure that combines a filling-factor-graded wavelike 2DPC and one-dimensional multilayer thin films is also discussed.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Some major fabrication methods are demonstrated and various applications of photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal laser, are also discussed.

Abstract:A two-dimensional polystyrene photonic crystal microcavity is fabricated by the method of focused ion beam etching. The scanning electron microscopy and the transmittance spectrum are used to characterize the properties of the photonic crystal microcavity. The quality factor and the transmittance of the photonic crystal microcavity is more than 530 and 90%, respectively. The measured results are in agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The photnic crystal devices(PhCD)can manipulate the behavior of photons with the advantages such as lower energy loss,smaller size and more easy to integrate on a chip. In this paper some capital design methods and theories of PhCDs were summarized,then the technological difficult points in the fabrication were pointed out and two important coupling technologies were introduced. We also give a perspective about the PhCDs in the end.

Abstract:Photonic crystal is a structure with periodic dielectric constant and it has photonic band gap, in which the electromagnetic wave can not propagate in the structure. Two-dimensional slab photonic crystals can be fabricated by etching periodic air holes on a slab substrate, which has been investigated and applied extensively because of their good control of light propagation. Photonic crystal micro-cavities and waveguides can be achieved by introducing defects in the two-dimensional slab photonic crystal. The coupling of micro-cavities and waveguides can be controlled by adjusting geometric parameters, so as to realize the optical devices based on two-dimensional slab photonic crystals such as optical switching, optical storage and single photon source, etc. Prop erties of the micro-cavities and waveguides of two-dimensional slab photonic crystals are introduced, and their coupling control and potential applications in optical quantum information processing are discussed as well.

Abstract:With the development of novel optoelectronic materials and nanofabrication technologies, integrated photonics is a rapidly developing field that will promote the development and application of next‐generation photonic devices. In recent years, emerging two‐dimensional materials (2DMs) including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), black phosphorus (BP), and ternary compounds show many complementarities and unique characteristics over those of traditional optoelectronic materials including broadband absorption, ultrafast carrier mobility, strong nonlinear effects, and compatibility for monolithic integration. Herein, the recent progress on waveguide‐integrated active devices for a full photonic circuit based on 2DMs is reviewed. Both the development of nanofabrication techniques and the working mechanism of active photonic components based on 2DMs containing integrated light sources, waveguide‐integrated modulators, photodetectors, as well as some advanced 2DMs‐based optoelectronic devices are illustrated in detail. In the end, the existing challenges and perspectives on novel 2DMs‐integrated photonics are summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal patterns have been fabricated by an improved nanosphere lithography method. By introducing an intermediary SiO2 layer between the self-assembled layer and the substrate, this method can be applied to a wide range of materials without much concern for their surface hydrophilicity. The controllability of the photonic crystal patterns has also been investigated. The air-filling factor of the photonic crystal patterns can be easily tailored by thinning the polymer nanospheres in inductively coupled O2 plasma with a controllable etch rate. Large-area ordered 512nm pitch hole array, with vertical and smooth sidewalls, has been successfully formed on a GaAs substrate, indicating the potential application in photonic crystal devices of this method.

Abstract:A fascinating photonic platform with a small device scale, fast operating speed, as well as low energy consumption is two-dimensional (2D) materials, thanks to their in-plane crystalline structures and out-of-plane quantum confinement. The key to further advancement in this research field is the ability to modify the optical properties of the 2D materials. The modifications typically come from the materials themselves, for example, altering their chemical compositions. This article reviews a comparably less explored but promising means, through engineering the photonic surroundings. Rather than modifying materials themselves, this means manipulates the dielectric and metallic environments, both uniform and nanostructured, that directly interact with the materials. For 2D materials that are only one or a few atoms thick, the interaction with the environment can be remarkably efficient. This review summarizes the three degrees of freedom of this interaction: weak coupling, strong coupling, and multifunctionality. In addition, it reviews a relatively timing concept of engineering that directly applied to the 2D materials by patterning. Benefiting from the burgeoning development of nanophotonics, the engineering of photonic environments provides a versatile and creative methodology of reshaping light–matter interaction in 2D materials.

Abstract:Due to their extraordinary optoelectronic properties, 2-D materials have been identified as promising materials for integrated photonics. However, most 2-D material-integrated photonic devices demonstrated to date are fabricated by transferring a layer of 2-D material on top of already fabricated photonic structures, which limits full utilization of their capability. Here we introduce a new photonic integration approach via direct deposition and fabrication of chalcogenide glass photonic devices on 2-D materials.We have applied the new process to fabricate high-performance, broadband on-chip graphene-based optical polarizers with a high contrast ratio of 740 dB/cm leveraging the remarkable optical anisotropy of graphene, and thermo-optic switches with a record heating efficiency of 10 nm/mW using in-waveguide low-loss (20 dB/cm) graphene transparent electrodes. The low processing temperatures of chalcogenide glasses further enables monolithic integration on plastics and the first waveguide-integrated graphene photodetector on flexible substrates. Last but not least, we have also demonstrated monolithic integration of chalcogenide photonic components on several other 2-D materials including WSe2, WS2, and MoTe2. The glass-on-2-D-material approach therefore provides a facile universal route for photonic integration based on 2-D materials.

Abstract:Recent research in topological photonics has not only proposed and realized novel topological phenomena such as one-way broadband propagation and robust transport of light, but also designed and fabricated photonic devices with high-performance indexes, which are immune to fabrication errors such as defects or disorders. Photonic crystals, which are periodic optical structures with the advantages of good light field confinement and multiple adjusting degrees of freedom, provide a powerful platform to control the flow of light. With the topology defined in the reciprocal space, photonic crystals have been widely used to reveal different topological phases of light and demonstrate topological photonic functionalities. This review presents the physics of topological photonic crystals with different dimensions, models, and topological phases. The design methods of topological photonic crystals are introduced. Furthermore, the applications of topological photonic crystals in passive and active photonics are reviewed. These studies pave the way for applying topological photonic crystals in practical photonic devices.

Abstract:In this paper a new technique is proposed for the fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals using monodisperse polystyrene microspheres as the templates. In addition, the approaches toward the creation of their corresponding inversed structures are described. The inversed structures were prepared by subjecting an introduced silica source to a sol-gel process; programmed heating was then performed to remove the template without spoiling the inversed structures. Utilizing these approaches, 2D and 3D photonic crystals and their highly ordered inversed hexagonal multilayer or monolayer structures were obtained on the substrate.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an overview of milestone achievements in the research and development of photonic crystal structures and their perspective applications. We highlight challenges in the analysis techniques, device design, efficient coupling techniques, and fabrication and characterization techniques for both planar and three-dimensional structures. We discuss extensively progress to date to overcome various aspects in the available modeling and simulation tools as well as the necessary fabrication procedures to produce functional photonic crystal structures and devices. Hence, the goal of the work presented in this paper is to present key building blocks, which will in turn facilitate the full utilization of the unique spatial and temporal properties of photonic crystal structures.

Abstract:High quality colloidal photonic crystals made from polystyrene spheres with diameter 240 nm are fabricated by the vertical deposition method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the transmittance spectrum are used to characterize the properties of the photonic crystal. The SEAT images show that there are few lattice defects. The transmittance of the photonic crystal is above 75% in the pass band at 700 nm and is lower than 5% at the centre of the band gap, respectively. It is found that proper concentration is a very important factor to fabricate the photonic crystal when the diameter of the spheres is lower than 300 nm.

Abstract:Two-photon photopolymerization, as an important laser nanofabrication scheme, is applicable to production of micromechanical and optoelectronic devices of various dimensions. Here we report our latest progress in using this technology for fabrication of functional photonic crystals, including the achievement of high reproducibility writing by using finely quantified pixels, high-fidelity shaping through shrinkage pre-compensation, and attainment of complex three-dimensional diamond-lattice structures. These works would be essential for advanced functions of photonic crystal-based polymer optoelectronic devices.
