Abstract:Using a newly constructed data set that covers 59 cross-listed Chinese companies,we find that the H-A price differentials are significantly reduced by the increasing investments under the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors(QFⅡ) and the Qualified Domestic Institutional Investors(QDⅡ) schemes after controlling for the expected exchange rate change,investor sentiment and other variables.The evidence suggests that the gradual lift of China's capital controls exert crucial impacts on the valuation of these two classes of shares.

Abstract:The active land rental market affects inter-household efficiency. Using nationally representative household panel data in China from 2017 to 2019, we estimate rural household efficiency with consideration of diversification, and analyze the effect of land rental market participation on household efficiency using a control function approach. Results show that: (1) the mean technical efficiency and allocative efficiency were 0.45 and 0.64 in 2017 and 0.44 and 0.66 in 2019, respectively, suggesting the existence of efficiency loss; (2) land rented-in activities improve rural households’ technical efficiency but not allocative efficiency; (3) land rented out activities decrease household technical efficiency but increase allocative efficiency. Further analysis showed that farm size heterogeneity might be the main reason for the efficiency difference. Households with large farms and plot sizes on rented land have significant advantages in technical efficiency and insignificant impacts on allocative efficiency. The results explain why the land rental market promotes efficient land transfer, but households with a large farm size are still rare in rural areas. Finally, we provide suggestions on how to stimulate the land rental market under diversification circumstances.

Abstract:This paper studies a transportation market with two firms providing transportation service between two locations. There are potential demands for transportation service in both directions. Firms make decisions on prices. The realized demands reflect the price decisions of both firms. Equipment is required to transport demand from one location to the other. To sustain the business, firms have to reposition empty equipment from a surplus location to a shortage location and incur repositioning cost if the realized demands are unbalanced. We build a mathematical model to study the pricing strategy and analyze the outcome of competition. The optimal pricing strategy of a firm is either to achieve the balance of realized demands or treat these two directions as two separate markets. We also study the outcome of competition. In case of a duopoly market, we corroborate how the profit of a firm is affected by potential imbalance, unit loaded equipment movement cost, unit empty equipment repositioning cost, price sensitivity and the competition intensity. It is interesting to find that profit may increase with potential imbalance and with unit empty equipment repositioning cost.

Research on Closed Loop Supply Chain with Reference Price Effect

Abstract:This paper considers a closed loop supply chain with the manufacturer as the Stackelberg leader. The manufacturer faces three different reverse channels, i.e., (1) manufacturer-managed, (2) retailer-managed, or (3) third party-managed channels. The reference price affects the purchase decision of consumers. Based on game theory, we discuss the reference price effect on the performances across three decentralized reverse channels, and examine the impact of reference price parameter (i.e., reference price coefficient in this paper) on optimal strategies. We conclude that higher reference price coefficient results in lower manufacturer and retailer profits. However, the profit of the third party increases in the reference price coefficient. In addition, some meaningful insights can be derived by comparison without the reference price effect in our models. We found that the scenario without reference price effect is generally superior to that with reference price effect.

Abstract:A model is presented in which market prices systematically understate fundamental values. The result follows from assumptions that the market is organized along auction lines with private information and is imperfect in that owners are occasionally forced to sell in order to raise cash for exogenous reasons. Because of the auction format, sellers do not receive the entire value of the surplus associated with their assets, and this becomes compounded in the market price through expectations of forced liquidations in the future. One by-product is that buy-and-hold strategies are optimal in certain variants of this model.

Abstract:This paper deals with the following question associated with congestion pricing in a general network with either fixed or elastic travel demand: what is the maximum efficiency loss of a general second-best pricing scheme due to inexact marginal-cost pricing in comparison with the first-best pricing or system optimum case? A formal answer to this question is provided by establishing an inefficiency bound associated with a given road pricing scheme. An application of the methods is provided for the practical trial-and-error implementation of marginal-cost pricing with unknown demand functions.

Abstract:This paper studies a freight transportation market with two firms providing transportation services between two locations. Demands for transportation service in two directions are heterogeneous in market size, price sensitivity and competition intensity etc. Firms make decisions on transportation prices. Realized demand in these two directions can be unbalanced. To sustain the business, firms have to reposition empty equipment from a surplus location to a shortage location. We build a mathematical model to study the pricing policy and outcome of competition between two firms. The pricing policy is either to achieve the balance of realized demands or treat the demand in each direction independently. Furthermore, we corroborate how the profit is affected by price sensitivity and unit repositioning cost. It is surprising to find that profit may increase with price sensitivity and unit repositioning cost in a competitive market.

Abstract:Most of resource extraction and pricing models assume that risks are known with certain. However, empirical studies show that implausible high degree of risk diversification is needed to rationalize a Hotelling/Capital-Asset-Pricing model of exhaustible resource. Many choice situations feature Knight uncertainty (i.e., ambiguity or uncertainty about risk) rather than the pure risk. We present an exhaustible resource pricing model with recursive multi-priors utility in continuous-time that demonstrates the effect of ambiguity aversion on resource extraction and pricing. To investigate the pricing problem under various market structures, we discuss not only a competitive market with homogeneous producers, but also a competitive market with heterogeneous producers. Results show that other than the famous Hotelling rule the ambiguity aversion also contributes to the exhaustible resource pricing. This explains the relative high excess return that has been empirically observed in the Hotelling/Capital-Asset-Pricing model of exhaustible resource. In other words, render unto Hotelling that which belongs to Hotelling and render unto Knight, that which belongs to Him.

Abstract:The market for selling reusable products is growing rapidly. Existing works for policy optimization often ignore the dynamic property of demand and the competition among providers. This paper studies service providers' dynamic pricing in consideration of market competition and dynamics, which makes two key contributions. First, we propose a comprehensive model that takes into account the dynamic demand under market competition and formulate the optimal pricing policy as an equilibrium. Second, as it is difficult to compute the Nash equilibrium due to incomplete information and implicit revenue function, we develop an efficient algorithm to calculate an approximate equilibrium, which is more practical in the real world. The experiments show that the proposed policy outperforms existing strategies and the incentive to deviate the approximate equilibrium is small.

Abstract:This work presents an asset pricing model that under rational expectation equilibrium perspective shows how, depending on risk aversion and noise volatility, a risky-asset has one equilibrium price that differs in term of efficiency: an informational efficient one (similar to Campbell and Kyle (1993)), and another one where price diverges from its informational efficient level. The former Pareto dominates (is dominated by) the latter in presence of low (high) market risk perception. The estimates of the model using S&P 500 Index support the theoretical findings, and the estimated inefficient equilibrium price captures the higher risk premium and higher volatility observed during the <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Dot.com" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> bubble 1995--2000.

Rational Cost Inefficiency in Chinese Banks

Abstract:According to a frequently cited finding by Berger et al (1993), X-inefficiency contributes 20% to cost-inefficiency in western banks. Empirical studies of Chinese banks tend to place cost-inefficiency in the region of 50%. Such estimates would suggest that Chinese banks suffer from gross cost inefficiency. Using a nonparametric bootstrapping method, this study decomposes cost-inefficiency in Chinese banks into X-inefficiency and allocative-inefficiency. It argues that allocative inefficiency is the optimal outcome of input resource allocation subject to enforced employment constraints. The resulting analysis suggests that allowing for rational allocative inefficiency; Chinese banks are no better or worse than their western counterparts.

Abstract:We present pricing mechanisms for several online resource allocation problems which obtain tight or nearly tight approximations to social welfare. In our settings, buyers arrive online and purchase bundles of items; buyers' values for the bundles are drawn from known distributions. This problem is closely related to the so-called prophet-inequality of Krengel and Sucheston and its extensions in recent literature. Motivated by applications to cloud economics, we consider two kinds of buyer preferences. In the first, items correspond to different units of time at which a resource is available; the items are arranged in a total order and buyers desire intervals of items. The second corresponds to bandwidth allocation over a tree network; the items are edges in the network and buyers desire paths. Because buyers' preferences have complementarities in the settings we consider, recent constant-factor approximations via item prices do not apply, and indeed strong negative results are known. We develop static, anonymous bundle pricing mechanisms. For the interval preferences setting, we show that static, anonymous bundle pricings achieve a sublogarithmic competitive ratio, which is optimal (within constant factors) over the class of all online allocation algorithms, truthful or not. For the path preferences setting, we obtain a nearly-tight logarithmic competitive ratio. Both of these results exhibit an exponential improvement over item pricings for these settings. Our results extend to settings where the seller has multiple copies of each item, with the competitive ratio decreasing linearly with supply. Such a gradual tradeoff between supply and the competitive ratio for welfare was previously known only for the single item prophet inequality.

Abstract:This paper examines the incentives of firms in exerting research and development (R&D) efforts to reduce the environmental cost of their production processes. Firms in almost every sector face mounting pressures from consumers, competitors and regulators to conduct environmental R&D. However, many are standing still due (mainly in part) to the trade-offs between benefits and costs, uncertainties and effectiveness of R&D activities. This paper presents a two-stage duopoly model that demonstrates how consumer demands, competitor actions and regulatory requirements can impact firms’ environmental R&D incentives. On the policy front, firms are regulated by a constant unit emissions cost under an emissions tax. On the demand side, in addition to deriving economic value from the product, consumers incur heterogeneous intrinsic costs (due to altruistic concerns) to consume environmentally inferior products, and exhibit “egoistic” preferences to consume their favorite brand. On the supply side, the efforts exerted by a firm generate a probability of R&D success with which the firm decreases the environmental cost of its production process, and the R&D cost exhibits diminishing returns to scale for R&D efforts. In this context, two firms compete on their R&D and pricing decisions in a two-stage game framework. Our results showcase a number of scenarios in which those external forces can induce firms to exert higher R&D efforts, some of which are counter-intuitive and contrary to commonly held assumptions and arguments about the role of consumer, competitive and regulatory pressures in environmental development.

Abstract:Trade-in program is a widely used way for recycling waste products. Similarly, a large number of automobile producers have launched trade-in-for new fuel cars or trade-in-for new energy vehicles to replacement consumers. We consider a two-period dynamic game problem and analyze the impact of the consumer anxiety behavior and the policy substitution effect on the customers' selection behavior, and the automobile producer's optimal pricing strategy. The results show that in the basic model, short-sighted customers' choices are diverse. In addition, both the consumer anxiety behavior and the policy substitution effect influence the producer's profit. In the extension models, it exists a threshold of the additional innovation level. When the additional innovation level is larger than the threshold value, automobile producers adopt the dynamic pricing strategy. Otherwise, they adopt the preannounce pricing strategy. Moreover, it exists a threshold of the additional innovation level. When it is larger than the threshold value, automobile producers adopt the single rollover strategy. Otherwise, they adopt the dual rollover strategy.
