Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of short selling and margin trading on the price discovery and price informativeness of cross-listed firms, using a sample of Chinese firms listed on the China and Hong Kong stock exchanges. Design/methodology/approach – The sample consists of 67 Chinese cross-listed firms on A-share and H-share markets out of which 18 firms are allowed to be sold short/ traded on margin since March 2010. Using pre- and post-event period, the authors compare and contrast various market microstructure variables. The contributions of the home (A-share) and overseas (H-share) markets to the incorporation of new information into prices are calculated following the permanent-transitory approach of Gonzalo and Granger (1995) as well as the adverse selection component of Lin et al. (1995). Findings – The findings indicate that for the group of Chinese cross-listed firms that are not allowed to be sold short or bought on margin, the home (A-share) market contributes more to the price discovery process over time. However, for the group of cross-listed firms that are eligible for short selling and margin trading, the authors observe no significant difference in the contribution of either A- or H-share markets to the price discovery. The contribution of home market for these firms is even lower around the announcement of major events. The authors further find that while the short sale activities appears to be informative, measured by the adverse selection (AS) component of spread, on the whole they have not led the A-share markets to be more informative. Research limitations/implications – The sample of cross-listed Chinese firms that are allowed to be sold short or bought on margin are rather limited. Hence, the results should be read with some caution. Practical implications – The removal of short selling constraints appears to improve the contribution of the respective markets to the process price discovery, in the case for larger cross-listed firms. Originality/value – The authors shed new lights on how the introduction of short selling and margin trading impacts on the price discovery of the Chinese cross-listed firms. A further contribution of the study is the use of high frequency data, while most of the previous studies on the Chinese markets use daily data.

Abstract:This study investigates the pricing efficiency of the Shanghai 50 ETF (SSE 50 ETF), the first exchange-traded fund (ETF) in China. The empirical results demonstrate that ETF market prices and net asset values (NAV) are cointegrated and there is unidirectional causality from price to NAV. The conditional variance dynamics from the augmented Generated AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) framework show that ETF market prices influence NAV volatility and therefore can be used as price-discovery vehicles. The study also finds that the fund's prices did not closely follow the NAV during the second half of 2007, when the Chinese stock market experienced substantial volatility, reflecting sudden increased market risks as well as potential arbitrage opportunities during financial turbulences.

Abstract:We examine the effect of Chinese OTC equity options on the underlying stock information efficiency by using the standardisation of the OTC options market as an exogenous event. The results show that, due to the tight short-sale constraints, the introduction of OTC stock options can widen the divergence of opinion about the stock price, and thus reduce the price efficiency. The significantly lower margin-debt ratio exhibited by optioned stocks supports the argument that OTC stock options act as a substitute for margin trading. Further analysis reveals that optioned stocks are more speculative, but there is no significant change in liquidity.

Abstract:In this article, the long-term behavior of the stock market index of the New York Stock Exchange is studied, for the period 1950 to 2013. Specifically, the CRSP Value-Weighted and CRSP Equal-Weighted index are analyzed in terms of market efficiency, using the standard ratio variance test, considering over 1600 one week rolling windows. For the equally weighted index, the null hypothesis of random walk is rejected in the whole period, while for the weighted market value index, the null hypothesis start to be accepted from the 1990s. In order to explain this difference, we raised the hypothesis that this behavior can be explained by the joint action of portfolios and non-synchronous trading effects. To check the feasibility of the above assumption, we performed a simulation of both effects, on two- and six-asset portfolios. The results showed that it is possible to explain the empirical difference between the two index, almost entirely by the joint effects of portfolio and non-synchronous trading.
Is the Effects of Short Selling and Margin Trading on China's Stock Pricing Efficiency Consistent?

Abstract:China introduced the mechanisms off margin trading and short selling to develop stock markets in 2010. However,whether the two mechanisms improved pricing efficiency have aroused a great deal of debate among the financial professionals.Moreover,the academic researches mainly focus on the effect of short selling,but few on the effect of margin trading.Thus,this paper investigates the effects of both mechanisms on the pricing efficiency,especially the different effects between them.It is found that pricing efficiency is improved after the implementation of short selling and margin trading in 2010.However,the short selling and margin trading have different effects on the pricing efficiency.More specifically,the short selling improved the pricing efficiency,but margin trading worsened the pricing efficiency. Moreover,compared to stocks with lower pricing error,the pricing efficiency of stocks with higher pricing error can improve more by the short selling mechanism,while the margin trading exerts no different effects on the pricing efficiency between the stocks with higher and lower pricing errors.

Abstract:China launched a pilot scheme in March 2010 to lift the ban on short-selling and margin-trading for stocks on a designated list. We find that stocks experience negative returns when added to the list. After the ban is lifted, price efficiency increases while stock return volatility decreases. Panel data regressions reveal that intensified short-selling activities are associated with improved price efficiency. Short-sellers trade to eliminate overpricing by selling stocks with higher contemporaneous returns following a downward trend, and their trades predict future returns. In contrast, we find intensified margin-trading activities for stocks with lower contemporaneous returns, and these trades have no return predictive power.

A Theoretical Study of the Dynamic Effects of the Introduction of Stock Index Futures on the Stock Market Price

Abstract:This paper develops a multi-period and multi-market decision model with a strategic trader,many trend followers,a liquidity provider,and an arbitrager between stock index cash and futures markets.It studies the price dynamics of the stock market when all investors know the timing of the introduction of Stock Index Fu- tures(SIF).The paper shows that the short term effects of introducing SIF contract on the stock market is mainly determined by the strength of the harding behavior.When the herding behavior is weak,the stock mar- ket decreases before as well as after the introduction of SIF.However,when the herding behavior is strong,the stock market rises before introducing SIF but falls after its introduction.Because of the strong herding tendency in Mainland of China,the authors predict that the stock market increases before the introduction of SIF,but de- creases afterwards and the introduction of SIF may decrease the market volatility under certain conditions as well.

Abstract:Using a new statistical procedure suitable to test efficient market hypothesis in presence of volatility clustering, we find significant evidence against the weak form of efficient market hypothesis for both Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets, although they have become more efficient at the later stage. We also find that Share A markets are more efficient than Share B markets, but there is no clear evidence on which stock market, Shanghai or Shenzhen, is more efficient. These findings are robust to volatility clustering, a key feature of high-frequency financial time series. They have important implications on predictability of stock returns and on efficacy of capital asset pricing and allocation in Chinese economy.

Abstract:We examine the effect of options trading on an optioned firm's investment decisions. We find that active options trading improves an optioned firm's investment efficiency, and that this effect holds under several alternative empirical specifications and identification strategies, including fixed-effects models, different matching methods, an instrumental variable approach, a Granger causality test and a quasi-natural experiment based on the listing decisions of the options exchanges. This relation is mediated by two factors, namely, information asymmetry and uncertainty, consistent with the notion that options trading improves investment efficiency by providing information that facilitates external monitoring and managerial learning. The results of cross-sectional analyses indicate that the effect of options trading on investment efficiency increases with firms' tendency to overinvest or underinvest, and with managers' risk-taking and learning incentives. We also demonstrate that the effect of options markets on investment efficiency is distinct from the effect of stock markets. Overall, our findings suggest that options trading plays a nonnegligible role in improving an optioned firm's investment efficiency.
Investor Trading Behavior and Performances: Evidence from Taiwan Stock Index Options

Abstract:A unique data set allows us to examine trading behavior and realized returns of all participants in the Taiwan stock index options. On average individual investors lose money and foreign institutions profit from trading options, even when they use the same trading strategy and for the same type of options. Foreign institutions that trade out-of-the-money options most frequently have the highest returns, while individual investors who predominately trade short-term and out-of-the-money options have the worse performance. Option trades initiated via market orders or aggressive limit orders have a higher probability of correctly predicting the underlying stock index movements and higher realized returns. Individual investors' trading performance improves with experience and sophistication. Finally, disposition effect distracts from trading performance.

Abstract:This paper conducts a theoretical and empirical analysis of the relationship between trading frequency and stock price efficiency.The theoretical model shows that,more trading opportunities may induce the informed traders to participate in more trades without obtaining accurate information.As a consequence,only part of the information is incorporated into the price.The empirical test with a sample of stocks listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange shows that stocks with higher average daily trading frequencies,have lower price efficiency,especially the mid and small - cap stocks.

Abstract:The index can be seen as a reflection of the market. Index futures, also known as stock index futures, are financial derivatives whose value is based on the performance of the whole market. As a consequence, investors can hedge the market risk by longing or shorting some specific value of index futures. Based on the idea, the paper tried to hedge the market risk and have a deeply look into whether it works and what characteristics it has. The paper chooses 10 stocks from those who are the components of the three main Index in China. The results show that with all the hedging strategies, volatility is effectively reduced and the ROI significantly increased during the period with acute value changes. The paper refined the whole experiment by randomly choosing the stocks with python and comparing the stock selection within the industry. The experiment verify the feasibility and the effectiveness of the hedging strategies based on the Index.

Abstract:This paper examines the empirical implications of several typical portfolio strategies for investing in Chinese stock market.To address this issue,we consider several databases across different time periods to evaluate the performance of these strategies in various market environments.Our results show that model-based optimization strategies perform well when allocating industrial stock indices;but for individual stocks,value-weighted portfolio appears to be a wise choice.In addition,the 1/N strategy also stands out in allocating individual stocks when the stock number is large enough.Furthermore,model-based optimization strategies perform better in the bull or bear market than they do in the long-term average market.We highlight some potential reasons underlying these results,and use them to interpret the key role of the selection of portfolio strategy in investment.

Abstract:This article investigates how margin-trading and short-selling affect stock price efficiency in the Chinese stock market. Using a sample of 205 stocks that are allowed to do margin-trading/short-selling in China after the fifth-round ban lift in 2014, we conducted fixed-effect panel regressions with three proxies for stock price efficiency. The findings support that price efficiency for these stocks is much higher than those that are not. The stocks that are newly added to the list of margin-trading and short-selling also see their price efficiency improve after the event compared to before the event. During a bull market, short selling improves stock price efficiency possibly through increasing liquidity, less information asymmetry, and broader investor base. On the other hand, during a bear market, margin-trading improves efficiency possibly through only liquidity and ownership breadth channels.

Abstract:Based on the TGARCH model, this paper examined the impact of index futures trading in the India markets on the volatility of the underlying spot market. The results suggest that futures trading leads to decreased volatility, however, this effect will change under different circumstance. The structure of spot market volatility changes obviously after the introduction of futures, which implies that stock price reflects the change of information more quickly, at the same time, much more information is acquired. The introduction of index futures trading can improve the information pricing efficiency of spot market.

Abstract:Compared with the developed countries, Chinese stock index option market developed late and accumulated less historical data. At the same time, it has the characteristics that many developed countries' stock option markets do not have. Black-Scholes Model is an important model in the field of option pricing. It is not enough for a financial model to be reasonable in theory, but it needs to be tested by the actual market. Therefore, based on the main transaction data of the CSI 300 stock index option contracts from 2010 to 2020, this paper analyzes the compliance of the CSI 300 stock index option market to the basic assumptions of the B-S option pricing model, the main parameters of the CSI 300 stock index options in the B-S option pricing model, and the fitting degree of the B-S model's prediction and actual prices. The result shows that there is a certain deviation between the pricing conclusions of the B-S model and the actual option prices. This paper analyzes the reasons for the deviation from many aspects, and puts forward the corresponding improvement strategies that the users of the model should adopt, so as to improve the applicability of the B-S option pricing model in Chinese stock index option market.

Abstract:Using the EC-EGARCH-GED model,the function of price discovery and volatility spillovers of index futures was investigated.The result suggests that index futures enlarge volatility in the stock market.In the long run,index futures have an impact on the price of stock indexes,while in the short run,the impact of index futures is greater than long run equilibrium.The effect of the recently listed index futures on the Shanghai and Shenzhen 300 stock index was measured at last and the results showed that index futures' listing brought a impact on stock indexes.

Abstract:Given the efficiency loss regarding the Chinese capital market, it is necessary to examine ways to improve pricing efficiency. Thus, this study considers A-share market listed companies (2005–2019) and adopts the proxy variable of pricing efficiency from the price adjustment speed to examine the effect of exchange traded funds (ETFs) holding shares on stock pricing efficiency. It also examines the effect of ETFs' entry and exit regarding the underlying stocks on the stock pricing efficiency relative to traditional mutual funds. Accordingly, the pricing efficiency of ETF-holding stocks is significantly higher than that of stocks not held by ETFs. Pricing efficiency is significantly improved after ETFs enter the underlying stocks. Contrarily, there is a significant decline in pricing efficiency when ETFs exit the underlying stocks. Moreover, whereas ETFs can help improve the pricing efficiency of the Chinese stock market, traditional mutual funds have somewhat harmed market pricing efficiency. Further, mediating effect model tests showed that ETF improves the stock pricing efficiency mainly via a trading rather than a governance channel. Thus, this study provides a new theoretical basis for improving the pricing efficiency of China's capital market.
