Abstract:In the present study, needle-like tungsten suboxide W18O49 nanocrystals were fabricated as the optical active substance to realize the aim of optical control of near-infrared light. The W18O49 nanocrystals were selected in this regard due to their unique optical performance. As revealed by the powder absorption result, the needle-like W18O49 nanocrystals show strong and wide photoabsorption in the entire near infrared region of 780-2500 nm, from which thin films with the W18O49 nanocrystal coating thus benefits and can strongly shield off almost all near infrared irradiation, whereas transmitting the majority of visible light. To make it more tunable, the W18O49 nanocrystals were finally assembled onto an ITO glass via the layer-by-layer strategy for later electrochromic investigation. The nanostructured architectures of the W18O49 nanocrystal electrochromic films exhibit high contrast, faster switching response, higher coloration efficiencies (150 cm(2) C(-1) at 650 nm and 255 cm(2) C(-1) at 1300 nm), better long-term redox switching stability (reversibility of 98% after 500 cycles) and wide electrochromic spectrum coverage of both the visible and infrared regions.

Abstract:Hardly any other compound has realized better optical absorption of near-infrared (NIR) rays (780-2500 nm) than tungsten bronze nanoparticles in terms of absorption coefficient, widths of the working spectrum, photothermal transformation efficiency and their own physicochemical stability. However, efforts concerning the development of tungsten bronze nanoparticles for serving as a NIR absorbent are very limited due to the shortage of effective approaches to obtain these nanoparticles, especially for tungsten bronzes with insertion of bigger cations, such as CsxWO3 and (NH4)(x)WO3. In this work, we describe how to fabricate (NH4)(x)WO3 using a high-temperature but short-time solvothermal process, which involves employing oleic acid-oleylamine as the solvent and WCl6 as the W resource, together with the inspection of its NIR-absorption related properties. The nanocubes of 100 nm have been characterized by XRD, TG-MS, XPS and TEM to examine the crystal phase and nanostructures. Moreover, the dispersion of the nanocubes in the form of a thin film was used to investigate the NIR absorption properties. As determined by the optical test, the thin film consisting of the nanocubes exhibits extraordinary features as a solar control window, which can transmit the majority of visible light while absorbing nearly all of the NIR rays from 780 nm to 2500 nm. Meanwhile, the (NH4)(x)WO3 thin film can maintain its high shielding effect for the 1064 nm NIR light up to 35.3 kW m(-2) radiation and has excellent cyclic stability for 100 cycles without obvious optical changes. Finally, it has been found that the (NH4)(x)WO3 nanocubes show a remarkable photothermal conversion phenomenon even when dispersed in a thin film.

Abstract:Tungsten-based semiconductor nanomaterials have great potential for developing energy-saving windows as a consequence of excellent shielding performance in the near-infrared (NIR) region. The performance of such nanomaterials is profoundly influenced by the the oxygen vacancies (OVs). However, the relationship between NIR absorption properties and OVs concentration has been rarely explored. In this work, the WO3-x nanosheets capable of various OVs concentration were successfully synthesized via a simple solvothermal approach, and we have carefully investigated their optical properties. Particularly, we found that the WO3-x-Pr nanosheets showed the strongest UV and NIR absorption, with the transmittance in visible region is up to 60%. Furthermore, this material is capable of the lowest temperature gap (about 11.4 °C). This work manifests that the optical performance of the tungsten (W)-based semiconductor nanomaterials is highly depended by the OVs concentration.

Abstract:The WO3/WS2 nanostructures were successfully prepared using a two-step hydrothermal/gas phase method. The physical properties of the nanostructures were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, UV–visible spectroscopy. The WO3/WS2 nanostructures obtained were coexistence of WO3 and WS2 in the same particle. The WO3/WS2 nanostructures contained a wide and intensive absorption in the UV–visible light region of 245–750nm, which showed that the WO3/WS2 nanostructures may have a potential application as an UV–visible photocatalyst.

Abstract:WO3 nanowire films were prepared by thermal evaporation. The electrochromic properties and relative near infrared absorption mechanism of the films in detail are investigated by electrochemistry, ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and some theoretical approaches. The studies indicate that WO3 nanowire films show excellent electrochromic properties, including a rapid response time (similar to 3 s) and a large contrast ratio between the bleached and the colored states. These improvements are due to the loose structure of the films and the small diameter of a single nanowire. It is also shown that a lithium tungsten bronze structure appears when the film is colored, causing two broad absorption bands centering around 920 and 1800 nm. A calculation including the Urbach effect, cation-polaron absorption and large polaron absorption was carried out to interpret the absorbance. A brief discussion of the discrepancy of the transmittance spectrum in the region lambda > 800 nm between the nanowire film and other traditional films is presented in the end. Abstract:Turning the surfaces of noble metals (metasurfaces) into black (highly absorptive) surfaces can be potentially applied in thermophotovoltaics, sensing, tailoring thermal emissivity, etc. Here we demonstrate an extremely broadband absorber for the 900-1600 nm wavelength range with robust high absorption efficiency. The inexpensive droplet evaporation method is implemented to create patterns of nanoparticles dispersed on a gold film spaced by a thin dielectric layer. The diversity of the complicated random stacking of the chemically synthesized gold nanorods is the major factor for the broad absorption band. Such a metamaterial absorber may pave the way for cost-effective manufacture of large-area black metasurfaces.

Abstract:A series of novel transition metal ion-substituted Zn1-xAxWO4 (A = Co, Mn, and Fe, 0 < x ≤ 0.1) inorganic pigments with blue, yellow, brown, and pale green colors have been prepared by a solution combustion method and exhibit extremely high near-infrared reflectance (R > 85%). X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis makes it clear that transition metal ions have already been incorporated into the host ZnWO4 lattice and do not change the lattice's initial wolframite structure. The optical absorption spectrum in the UV region of the ZnWO4 pigment calcined at 800 °C for 3 h is a ligand-to-metal charge transfer from O 2p nonbonding orbits to antibonding W 5d orbits. On account of the doping Co2+ (3d7), Mn2+ (3d5), and Fe3+ (3d5) transition metal ions, these chromophore ions have occupied the distorted octahedral site of Zn2+, leading to d-d transition and metal-to-metal charge transfer from the occupied 3d orbits of A2+ to unoccupied W 5d orbits in UV and visible ranges and generating some bright colors. Significantly, these inorganic pigments are also endowed with excellent thermal and chemical stability and are conducive to harsh working conditions. All of the analysis results have offered some design strategies for various colorful inorganic pigments with high near-infrared reflectance.

Abstract:A large-area high-performance near-infrared absorber based on plasmonic nanostructures is introduced, fabricated and experimentally characterized. The periodic plasmonic nanostructures are prepared by self-assembled template, a charming low-cost technology for making large-area samples. Experimental results show that the absorbance can be as high as 99%. The spectral position of the absorption peak is experimentally demonstrated to be tuned by the geometric dimensions. The physical origin of the absorption effect is theoretically explained as well.

Abstract:W18O49 nanowires were synthesized by a high-temperature physical evaporation technique. The structure, morphology, and composition of the nanowires were characterized by SEM, EMPA, XRD, XPS, and HRTEM techniques. The intrinsic Raman spectrum of W18O49 nanowires was obtained, and the effect of laser power on the change of their structure was also studied. W18O49 nanowires were first oxidized to tungsten trioxide nanowires under irradiation of a certain laser power, and then the tungsten trioxide nanowires underwent a phase transition from monoclinic to orthorhombic with increasing laser power; this phase transition was reversible on turning down the laser power. Abstract:Monodisperse 3.1 nm Ag2Te NCs show a sharp optical absorption feature at 1154 nm with a large linear temperature dependence and the photoconductive response consistent with semiconducting character in Ag2Te NCs. The wavelength of the resonance is within the window of transparency for biological tissue making it a potential in vivo temperature marker or transducer for in situ heating with deep-penetrating near-infrared radiation.

Abstract:A high near-infrared reflective green pigment with a low cobalt content, Zn0.96Co0.04O, was prepared by solution combustion synthesis. The pigment was characterized by XRD, SEM, TG-DSC, UV-vis and CIE L*a*b*C*h* colorimetric. The resulting green pigment showed that the chromaticity performance is better. The doping Co did not affect the main crystalline structure, all samples were retained ZnO wurtzite structure. The better green hue is a* = 15.35 and achieved a near -infrared reflectivity up to 40%, when CoO content was x = 0.04, combustion agent was glycine, calcination temperature was 1000 degrees C. The synthesized pigments have a better thermal stability, chemical stability and a small amount of cobalt oxide (2.8 wt%), and the preparation process is simple. Therefore, the green pigment of ZnO wurtzite structure has great potential in serving as cool pigments for building coatings.
Tunable Mid-Infrared Broadband Absorber Based on W/VO2 Square Nano-Pillar Array

Abstract:Based on the thermochromic phase transition characteristics of VO2, a tunable mid-infrared broadband absorber with a W/VO2 square nano-pillar array is designed. The influences of structural parameters on the absorption performances and the electromagnetic field intensity distributions within the structure, and the absorption characteristics of the absorber under different polarization states and incident angles arc analyzed by the finite difference time domain method. The results show that the infrared light incident on the absorber is converted into heat and consumed when VO2 does not undergo the phase transition, and the average absorptivity of the absorber in 3-5 m wavelength region is as high as 96.2% under the optimal structural parameters. In contrast, the absorber exhibits a strong reflection and inhibits light absorption when the phase of VO2 is changed into a metallic state, and the average absorptivity difference between high and low temperatures can reach 71.1%. The absorptivity of the absorber is less affected by the incident lasers with different polarization states and has wide-angle absorption characteristics, so the absorber is expected to be applied in the field of infrared intelligent optoelectronics.
