Abstract:In this paper, the Fe-doped WO3 nanostructures with precisely controlled Fe doping contents are obtained by using a template method. The characterizations obviously show that the as-prepared samples have hollow spherical like morphology, small grain size (10 nm), high crystalline quality, and ultrahigh surface area (225 m(2)/g). Furthermore, the band gap of the Fe-doped WO3 nanostructures is facilely tunable by controlling the Fe contents. And the density-functional theory (OFT) calculation reveals that the formation of impurity band in the band gap narrows the band gap of the Fe-doped WO3 nanostructures. The photocatalytic activity of WO3 nanostructures could be remarkably enhanced by doping the Fe impurity. This can be attributed to the fact that the red shift of absorption edge and the trapping effect of the Fe-doped WO3 nanostructures. The research result provides a general and effective method to synthesize different photocatalysts with enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Fe-MnO2 nanocomposite was prepared via a redox–precipitation method combined with a subsequent aging treatment at low-temperature. Various characterizations showed that Fe was incorporated into MnO2 lattice that changed the relative intensity of MnO2 crystal planes. Thus, the structural defect was formed and the anisotropic growth of the MnO2 crystallite phase was suppressed. As a result, the morphology of MnO2 was transformed from nanowires to nanoparticles. In addition, the catalytic property of Fe-MnO2 was significantly enhanced than that of pristine MnO2 for the complete oxidation of o-xylene. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for regulating MnO2 texture and activity.
Synthesis of Small Yolk–shell Fe3O4@TiO2 Nanoparticles with Controllable Thickness As Recyclable Photocatalysts

Abstract:Core-shell nanophotocatalysts consisting of superparamagnetic cores and functional shells are intriguing in environmental remediation and biology. A few Fe3O4@TiO2 particles have been developed in previous research studies, while most of them show a submicron-scale size and thick SiO2 interlayers. Herein, we present a facile approach to prepare small Fe3O4@TiO2 with a unique yolk-shell structure below 50 nm, in which most of the SiO2 interlayers have been simultaneously etched off during synthesis. The prepared photocatalysts have been characterized by TEM, XRD, BET and VSM, and a formation mechanism is proposed. Controllable thickness of the TiO2 shell has been achieved and its effect on their photocatalytic activities has also been investigated. These small yolk-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles are expected to be applied in a variety of fields due to their low density, high surface area, superparamagnetic behavior and good photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A novel direct Z-scheme ZnS quantum dot (QD)-Fe2O3 QD heterojunction/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (GZxFy) nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The surface of ZnS and Fe2O3 QDs was modified by -COOH and -OH groups, respectively. ZnS QDs can be covalently bonded with Fe2O3 QDs by the dehydration reaction to form the ZnS QDs-Fe2O3 QDs heterojunctions. The GZxFy nanocomposites displayed the highest photodegradation efficiency of 96.45% (40 min, UV light) and 90.17% (480 min, visible light) for methylene blue when the mass ratio of ZnS QDs to Fe2O3 QDs was 1:3. The excellent photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the enhanced light-harvesting ability, high large specific surface area, efficient interfacial charge-carrier separation and transfer as well as the low charge transfer resistance. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and radical trapping experiments were used to confirm the Z-scheme mechanism formed between ZnS QDs and Fe2O3 QDs, and verify the electron transfer direction for UV or visible light-driven photocatalytic reactions. GZ1F3 nanocomposites showed the excellent superparamagnetic behavior, which enabled its rapid magnetic recycle from the solution within 95 s in a magnetic field.

Abstract:Bifunctional magnetic–optical ZnO-γ-Fe2O3 hybrid nanomaterials have been synthesized via a layer-by-layer assembly technique on ZnO nanorod templates. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, field emission scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been used to characterize the as-synthesized products. The photoluminescence spectra indicate that ZnO-γ-Fe2O3 hybrid nanomaterials exhibit enhanced UV emission and passivated defect emission. The magnetic property investigation reveals that ZnO-γ-Fe2O3 hybrid nanomaterials exhibit a superparamagnetic behavior.
Facile preparation, characterization and photocatalytic properties of multifunctional BiFeO 3 nanocrystals

Abstract:Polycrystalline BiFeO3 nanoparticles (size 30 similar to 50 nm) were prepared by a simple microwave synthesis technique. The nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM and TG-DTA. The applied experiments show that they are very efficient for photo-catalytic decomposition of organic contaminants under irradiation ultraviolet frequency. The as-obtained BiFeO3 nanoparticles also demonstrate strong ferromagnetism of about 0.045 mu(B)/Fe at room temperature, which is in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Hollow α-Fe2O3 nanospindles have been designed and fabricated via a facile wrap–bake–peel process consisting of silica coating, calcination treatment and the removal of the silica coating layer. The excellent photocatalytic performance was attributed to the obtained hollow structure and the improved crystallinity of the photocatalyst, which also has good reusability in photocatalytic water oxidation, achieving up to 4 times higher activity than pristine Fe2O3 and the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of H2 evolution reaches up to 2.14%. These results demonstrate that the hollow α-Fe2O3 nanospindles can be acted as a promising candidate for highly efficient photocatalyst of water oxidation.

Abstract:We report a new, easy and environment friendly defects engineered approach to develop defect-rich Fe/W co-doped MoO 3 nanoparticles (Fe,W-MoO 3 NPs) for a variety of applications. The solution combustion process entails using Millettia peguensis flowers extract as a unique fuel for the synthesis of Fe,W-MoO 3 NPs. The synthesized NPs were characterized by various physical techniques. As prepared NPs were well examined for photocatalytic methylene blue (MB) dye degradation, electrocatalytic nitrite sensing, antioxidant and luminescence performances. Under visible light irradiation, Fe,W-MoO 3 NPs exhibit outstanding photocatalytic performance towards MB dye degradation. Complete degradation of MB dye was demonstrated by the photocatalyst within a short span of 30 min. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry studies were carried out to assess the electrocatalytic performance of as synthesized NPs. The Fe,W-MoO 3 fabricated electrode manifested substantial nitrite sensing activity with LOD of 23.36 ± 1.17 μM. Fe,W-MoO 3 nanoparticles demonstrated significant DPPH antiradical properties with IC 50 of 394.33 ± 19.17 μg/mL. Also, as synthesized NPs exhibited significant luminescence activity portraying it as an efficient luminescent material. Thus, the current work manifests an inexpensive and sustainable green synthetic approach for large-scale synthesis of multifaceted Fe,W-MoO 3 NPs.

Abstract:Effective charge-carrier separation and molecular oxygen activation are crucial factors for photocatalytic environmental purification. Herein, an efficient Fe-doped Bi7O9I3 microflowers photocatalyst was synthesized. It was discovered that Fe doping could not only tune the concentration of oxygen vacancies of Bi7O9I3 to optimize the dissociation of excitons, but also promote the separation of charge-carriers and the activation of oxygen molecules. Meanwhile, the inducing of surface oxygen vacancies and Fe3+/Fe2+ by Fe optimal doping can act as the activation center for catalytic reactions, which also significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity. Benefiting from the optimized properties, the photocatalytic activity of Fe-doped Bi7O9I3 photocatalyst has been significantly improved by more than 4 times. Finally, we proposed that a highly efficient catalytic oxidation reaction mechanism can be achieved via modulating Fe doping to induce oxygen vacancies to promote charge separation and molecular oxygen activation. This work provides a novel approach for designing efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:A novel sonochemical method is described for the preparation of Fe3O4-TiO2 photocatalysts in which nanocrystalline titanium dioxide particles are directly coated onto a magnetic core. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles were partially embedded in TiO2 agglomerates. TiO2 nanocrystallites were obtained by hydrolysis and condensation of titanium tetraisopropyl in the presence of ethanol and water under high-intensity ultrasound irradiation. This method is attractive since it eliminated the high-temperature heat treatment required in the conventional sol-gel method, which is important in transforming amorphous titanium dioxide into a photoactive crystalline phase. In comparison to other methods, the developed method is simple, mild, green and efficient. The magnetization hysteresis loop for Fe3O4-TiO2 nanocomposites indicates that the hybrid catalyst shows superparamagnetic characteristics at room temperature. Photocatalytic activity studies confirmed that the as-prepared nanocomposites have high photocatalytic ability toward the photodegradation of RhB solution. Furthermore, the photodecomposition rate decreases only slightly after six cycles of the photocatalysis experiment. Thus, these Fe3O4-TiO2 nanocomposites can be served as an effective and conveniently recyclable photocatalyst.
Magnetically separable Fe3O4@TiO2 nanospheres: preparation and photocatalytic activity

Abstract:A facile and efficient approach for the fabrication of Fe3O4@TiO2 nanospheres with a good core–shell structure has been demonstrated. Products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results showed that Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited high degree of crystallinity, excellent magnetic properties at room temperature. Furthermore, the as-prepared Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited good photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) solution. Additionally, the recycling experiment of Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites had been done, demonstrating that Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites have high efficiency and stability.

Abstract:Various semiconductors have been studied as photocatalysts for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in aqueous solutions. As one of the promising visible-light-driven semiconductor photocatalysts, α-Fe(2)O(3) has advantages of low cost and stability. However, its application is inhibited by the poor separation of photogenerated electron-hole pair. In this work, hybrid structures were prepared to improve the performance of α-Fe(2)O(3). CdS nanoparticles were overgrown on the preformed single-crystalline α-Fe(2)O(3) nanorods by a simple and mild one-step wet-chemical method, resulting in α-Fe(2)O(3)/CdS cornlike nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy showed the α-Fe(2)O(3)/CdS core/shell heterostructure of the nanocomposite with high crystallinity. Furthermore, the cornlike nanocomposites exhibited superior photocatalytic performances under visible light irradiation over the pure α-Fe(2)O(3) nanorods and CdS nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity of the composites is superior to the previously-reported pure α-Fe(2)O(3) nanomaterials, and the performance is comparable to both the commercial TiO(2) (P25) which is used under UV irradiation and the newly developed α-Fe(2)O(3)/SnO(2) photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The enhanced performance is associated with the larger surface area of the cornlike structure, the crystalline nature of the materials and the synergy in light absorption and charge separation between α-Fe(2)O(3) and CdS. As such, our α-Fe(2)O(3)/CdS cornlike nanocomposites may be promising to be used as visible-light-driven high-performance photocatalyst.
Fe doped Bi2O2S nanosheets for improved organic pollutants photo-Fenton degradation and CO2 photoreduction

Abstract:Photo-Fenton reaction is regarded as an effective method for removing organic pollutants in wastewater. Herein, the Fe doped Bi2O2S nanosheets were synthesized for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) photo-Fenton degradation. The optimized Fe doped Bi2O2S (2mol%Fe-BOS) achieves greatly enhanced TCH photo-Fenton degradation efficiency up to 81.01% with respect to the pure BOS (21.33%) under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photo-Fenton catalytic performance of Fe-BOS was mainly attributed to the photoinduced electrons can be quickly migrated to Fe3+ to generate Fe2+, which boost the electron transfer capacity, and hydroxyl radicals ( OH) were quickly produced via the reaction between Fe2+ and H2O2. Meanwhile, the 2mol%Fe-BOS displays relatively higher CO2-to-CH4 conversion activity. Additionally, a possible catalytic reaction mechanism over Fe-BOS system is proposed based on the radical quenching, electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation. This work demonstrates that the introduction of Fe3+ is a promising strategy to design of efficient Bi2O2S-based photocatalysts for H2O2 activation and solar-to-fuel conversion.

Abstract:Abstract Fenton-like catalysts are important materials for degrading refractory organic pollutants, however, they still suffer from limited oxidizing ability. Although single atoms and nanoparticles with high-index facets are commonly used in catalysis, their high surface energy hinders controllable synthesis. Here, we construct an iron-based material containing both isolated single atoms and high-index faceted nanoparticles by carbon-assisted Flash Joule heating for organic pollutant remediation. The current-induced thermal shock benefits the excitation of iron atoms and subsequent trapping by graphene defects. At ultrahigh temperatures, the thermodynamic limitations are overcome, leading to nanoparticles with high-index facets. Density functional theory calculations indicate that hydroxyl radical production can be enhanced by self-relay catalysis via the ensemble effect between single atoms and high-index facet nanoparticles. The derived materials exhibit dramatically improved performance in terms of antibiotic removal and medical micropolluted water. Thus, this method presents an effective strategy for designing smart materials for organic wastewater purification.
Facile fabrication of ZnO nanorods modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles with enhanced magnetic, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic properties

Abstract:Novel Fe3O4/ZnO magnetic nanocomposites with a hierarchical morphology were synthesized by a facile two-step liquid chemical method. The structure, morphology, chemical composition, magnetic behavior and optical property of the samples were examined. The as-prepared nanocomposites were composed of discoid-like and chip-like Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated by ZnO nanorods. Meanwhile, the amount of Fe3O4 precursor in composite had significant influence on the microstructure and optical property. The unique Fe3O4/ZnO-2 showed a relatively large specific surface area with 168.01 m2⋅g−1, hierarchical porosity and enhanced optical response. In magnetic measurement, Fe3O4/ZnO-2 had an excellent superparamagnetic property with 44.77 emu/g of saturation magnetization. Furthermore, the magnetic nanocomposite possessed a higher adsorption capacity to Rhodamine B (RhB) dyes compared with bare ZnO, which would contribute to its use for photocatalytic degradation. For the photocatalytic degradation of RhB, the Fe3O4/ZnO-2 sample showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency (76.46%) under a low-power UV light, compared to that of 71.13% by bare ZnO. In addition, the Fe3O4/ZnO photocatalyst provided more efficient magnetic separation and better photoelectrochemical property than individual oxide. The favorable photocatalytic activity can be attributed to synergistic effect of unique microstructure, large surface area, and strong light absorption.

Abstract:A self-assembly strategy was presented for the synthesis of highly dispersed Co/Fe bimetallic carbon cages (CoFe50@C) through thermal morphology-controlled transformation of Fe doping dual metal-organic frame-works (MOFs). Taking advantage of the well dispersibility, synergetic effects between Fe and Co species, and enhanced graphitization degree of carbon, CoFe50@C exhibited a high removal efficiency of 98% in 180 min for sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The synergistic effect between Co and Fe species played an important role in promoting the reduction of Co(III) to Co(II) and the adsorption of H2O2 molecules, thus enhancing the generation of hy-droxyl radicals (HO center dot), which had been demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Mean-while, the graphitized carbon cages could prevent the loss of bimetallic active component and promote the electron transfer during catalytic reaction. This work provides a new type of highly dispersed Co/Fe bimetal carbon cages as heterogeneous Fenton nanocatalyst for the degradation of organic contaminants.
0D/2D dual Fenton α-Fe2O3/Fe-doped g-C3N4 photocatalyst and the synergistic photo-Fenton catalytic mechanism insight

Abstract:A novel dual Photo-Fenton photocatalyst Fe2O3-Fe-CN with excellent Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion efficiency and trace metal ion leaching rate has been fabricated by in-situ deposition of α-Fe2O3 quantum dots on ultrathin porous Fe-doped carbon nitride (Fe-CN) nanosheets. The iron species in Fe-CN and α-Fe2O3 QDs constitute a mutually reinforcing dual Photo-Fenton effect. The 4% Fe2O3-Fe-CN showed superior performance with kobs values 8.60 and 4.80 folders greater than pure CN and Fe-CN, respectively. The synergistic effect between α-Fe2O3 QDs and the ultrathin porous structure of Fe-CN is the primary reason for the outstanding catalytic performance exhibited by α-Fe2O3/Fe-CN. On one hand, the ultrathin porous structure of Fe-CN promotes the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons. On the other hand, the efficient photogenerated charge separation at the α-Fe2O3/Fe-CN interface enables more photogenerated electrons to participate in the Fe3+/Fe2+ conversion and H2O2 activation. The trapping experiments demonstrate that •OH and •O2- are the primary active species in TC degradation. This work presents novel insights into the design of efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for practical applications.
Synthesis of N/Fe Comodified TiO2Loaded on Bentonite for Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity under UV-Vis Light

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of TiO2as a photocatalyst for contaminant degradation, a novel nanocomposite catalyst of (N, Fe) modified TiO2nanoparticles loaded on bentonite (B-N/Fe-TiO2) was successfully prepared for the first time by sol-gel method. The synthesized B-N/Fe-TiO2catalyst composites were characterized by multiple techniques, including scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), nitrogen adsorption/desorption, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The results showed that bentonite significantly enhanced the dispersion of TiO2nanoparticles and increased the specific surface area of the catalysts. Compared with nondoped TiO2, single element doped TiO2, or unloaded TiO2nanoparticles, B-N/Fe-TiO2had the highest absorption in UV-visible region. The photocatalytic activity of B-N/Fe-TiO2was also the highest, based on the degradation of methyl blue (MB) at room temperature under UV and visible light irradiation. In particular, the synthesized B-N/Fe-TiO2showed much greater photocatalytic efficiency than N/Fe-TiO2under visible light, the newly synthesized B-N/Fe-TiO2is going to significantly increase the photocatalytic efficiency of the catalyst using sun light.
Ultrafast degradation of emerging organic pollutants via activation of peroxymonosulfate over Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x: Singlet oxygen evolution and electron-transfer mechanisms

Abstract:Fe3C/Fe decorated N-doped magnetic carbon materials (denoted as Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x) were successfully fabricated via facile one-pot calcination of MIL-88B(Fe) with a green precursor of melamine. Benefiting from the co-existence of sp2-hybridized C–π moieties, oxygen-containing groups (CO and O–CO), N-doping species and ferreous nanoparticles (FNPs), the as-obtained Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited excellent activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ultrafast elimination of various emerging organic contaminants with high mineralization capacities. Inspired by the unique nanotube morphology and encapsulation of FNPs, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 possessed trace Fe leaching and can be magnetically separated for an easy recycling. Combining with competitive radical scavenging tests, electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical analysis and in-situ Raman spectra, the singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron-transfer can be accounted for the organic pollutant removal. Because of that, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited good resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matters (NOMs). It was fascinating that Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 achieved satisfactory treatment efficiency for real pharmaceutical wastewater.
