Abstract:Undoped and series of Y3+ doped PbWO4 crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. The transmittance at 420 nm wavelength of PbWO4 crystal was decreased when it was annealed in an oxygen-rich environment; whereas it was increased when the crystal was annealed in vacuum. A mechanism on the transmittance change was proposed. Compared with undoped crystals, the transmittance and the ratio of the blue emission to green emission for Y:PbWO4 were improved. It implied that Y doping prevented the creation of Pb3+ in the crystal. Correspondingly, the light yield of PbWO4 by doping Y was increased.

Abstract:Novel erythrocyte-like Y-doped PbWO4 mesocrystals with average diameter and thickness of 1.5 and 0.7μm are fabricated via a facile co-precipitation route at room temperature in the ethylene glycol (EG)-water mixed solvent. Time-dependent samples centrifuged at different times are carefully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectrum. The possible formation mechanism for the novel erythrocyte-like mesocrystals is proposed on the basis of these observations. The photocatalytic activity of the Y-doped PbWO4 mesocrystals is further investigated in terms of the degradation of the acid orange II under UV irradiation. This simple and environment-friendly strategy presented here offers promising route for the synthesis of other inorganic materials with unique morphologies and interesting properties.

Abstract:Eu3+ doped PbWO4 dendritic nanostructures have been prepared by a facile hydrothermal technique and characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and PL spectroscopy. The results indicate that the changing of the Eu3+ doping concentration in a reasonable range can adjust themorphology, and has no obvious effect on the phase structure of the obtained materials. Moreover, the Eu3+ doping can lead to the enhancement of photocatalytic activity of PbWO4. Compared with pure PbWO4 dendritic nanostructures, the PbWO4: x% Eu3+ samples exhibit improved photocatalytic activity in the decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB). The enhanced performance of the photocatalyst might be ascribed to efficient separation of electron and hole pairs after doping Eu3+ into the PbWO4 lattice.

Abstract:Sb(III)-doped lead tungstate single crystals with controlled shapes and enhanced green emission have been synthesized via a facile, Pluronic P123 (EO20PO70EO20)-assisted, sonochemical method. The surfactant Pluronic P123 was found to play a crucial role in the morphology control of the final products. The growth process was investigated by carefully following time-dependent experiments, and the oriented attachment process accompanying Ostwald ripening was proposed for the possible formation mechanism. The optical properties, such as the Raman spectra and PL spectra, of doped PbWO4 were studied. Room-temperature photoluminescence of doped PbWO4 samples with different morphologies at desired Sb doping concentrations showed greatly enhanced luminescence intensity compared to the undoped PbWO4.

Abstract:The effect of Y and Sb co-doping on the luminescence property of PbWO4 crystals has been investigated. Compared with undoped PbWO4, the transmittance and emission peak intensity of Y:Sb:PbWO4 crystals were obviously improved. In addition, its transmittance cutoff wavelength and emission peak shifted to the shorter one. The mechanism of effect of Y and Sb on the transmittance spectra was briefly discussed. The light yield of Y:Sb:PbWO4 crystals was 25p.e./MeV, which was two times of that of undoped PbWO4. Our experiments showed that Y and Sb co-doping was a selectable method to improve the luminescence property of PbWO4.

Abstract:Some Y3+-doped PbWO4 crystals grown by modified Bridgmann method showed exceptional behaviors, namely, light yield increased after low dose rate irradiation, and the radiation-induced absorption coefficient was negative around 430nm. In this paper, the influences of monovalent ion impurities (Na+ and K+) on the stability of scintillation properties and radiation hardness were studied. The experimental results show that Na+ ion enhances the absorption band at cut-off edge and at 430nm, while K+ ion only makes optical transmission unstable around 430nm when the crystals were annealed at high temperatures. The contamination by Na+ and K+ ions makes scintillation properties and radiation hardness more unstable in the temperature range from 50°C to 350°C. The radiation-induced absorption coefficient is also negative around 430nm. The charge compensation mode of K+ ion along the crystal does not change, but those of Na+ ion are different along the crystal. The concentrated Na+, K+ and Y3+ ions, which occupied Pb sublattice, lead to the shortage of Pb vacancies (VPb″). Thus instead of the formation of [2(Y3+Pb)—VPb″] ((Y3+Pb) stands for the Y3+ ion occupying the Pb sublattice), Na+ and K+ ions compel the defect (Y3+Pb) to form cluster [2(Y3+Pb)—Oi″] or [(Y3+Pb)—Oi″+hole] in which the interstitial oxygen (Oi″) was considered to be the origin of light yield increase after low dose rate irradiation.

Abstract:Pb-doped ZnO nanowires (NWs) have been synthesized by modified thermal evaporation method. Effect of Pb-doping on the morphology, structure, and optical properties of as deposited NWs have been investigated. The TEM images show that the doped NWs consist of cantilever-like with diameter in the range of 20–150nm. It has been found that the doped NWs are single crystalline grown along [101] direction. The composition and valence state of Pb ions have been investigated through energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photospectroscopy (XPS), which demonstrate that the Pb ions are uniformly doped into each NW and are in +2 oxidation state. In addition, photoluminescence spectra exhibit an increased amount of defects with increasing Pb, which leads to a red shift in the UV region. Furthermore, the band gap tailoring in Pb-doped ZnO NWs makes their potential for optoelectronics devices.

Abstract:Zn-doped Cu2O polyhedrons with various crystal morphologies, from 50-facet and 26-facet to 8-facet, were synthesized via a mild, low-temperature process based on the hydrothermal method. Addition of zinc salt to the reaction mixture might allow the introduction of Zn ions into the Cu2O crystal lattice, which is shown by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Doping of Cu2O crystals with Zn affects not only their morphologies but also significantly influences their optoelectronic properties. UV-visible and photoluminescence (PL) tests showed that the Zn-doped Cu2O system displays an increased band gap and enhanced photoluminescence properties. The open circuit potential-time (Ocp-t) method shows that a pure Cu2O crystal is an n-type semiconductor, while the Zn-doped Cu2O crystal shows p-type characteristics.

Progress in Crystal Growth and Characterization of Materials

Abstract:A series of PbWO4(PWO) powders, undoped and doped with Y and or Sb, were prepared in air and studied by cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra, and compared with that of undoped and Sb doped PWO single crystals grown by the Bridgman method. The luminescence of PWO prepared in air at high temperature (900 degrees C) is mainly in a broad green band, and its intensity of emission is stronger than that of doped PWO. However the luminescence of PWO:Sb prepared in an oxygen deficient atmosphere is better than undoped PWO.

Abstract:The growth of PbWO4 crystal from high-purity raw material of PbO and WO3 was reported, and the influences of raw material's purity as well as the growth process on the crystal quality were studied. The optical performance and the scintillation characteristics of the crystal were measured, and it was found that a PbWO4 crystal of good quality was obtained.

Abstract:The influence of antimony (Sb) doping on the luminescent properties of lead tungstate single crystals (PWO) has been investigated. Transmission spectra, emission, and excitation spectra of UV-excited luminescence of PWO and PWO:Sb have been reported. Though our measurement based on the surface emission may be different from the light intensity in the crystal body itself, the comparison of spectra between PWO and PWO:Sb showed some significant results. Sb doping improved the luminescence of PWO by enormously increasing its light yield, and the green emission band in luminescent spectra is drastically enhanced, while the red one is restrained. On the ground that the improvement by Sb doping is similar to the air annealing effect on PWO luminescence, the mechanism of Sb doping and the origin of the green emission is briefly discussed. We suggested that Sb3+ ions and Sb5+ ions coexist in PbWO4:Sb crystals and the green emission originate from centers (WO42−+Oi).

Abstract:The luminescent properties of PbW04: Gd3 + were studied. The luminescence of Gd3 + in PbWO4: Gd3 +was quenched. It is possible that the excitation states of Gd3 + locate in the conduction band of PbW04 crystal. The luminescent intensity of the green and the blue band of PbW04 emission increases by doping with about 0.005% and 0.01% (molar fraction) Gd3+ respectively. Mechanism of this enhancement of PbWO4:Gd3+ luminescence is probably due to energy transfer from Gd3 + to PbW04 host in the crystal. The PbW04 doped with low concentration of Gd (about 0.005% -0.01% ) is a good scintillating material.

Abstract:Light yield of some Y3+: PWO crystals increases after irradiation, and is accompanied with transmission change in the wavelengths from 380 to 500nm. The pre-existing 430nm color centers or annealing induced ones are unstable during irradiation. These results interpret the temperature sensitivity of light yield and radiation hardness. A proper annealing temperature and the way to eliminate the instability are found out.

Abstract:The influence of niobium (Nb) doping on the properties of lead tungstate crystals (PWO) has been investigated. Transmission, emission, positron annihilation lifetime spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of PWO:Nb and undoped PWO were reported. The luminescence characteristics of the Nb-doped PWO crystal was discussed by comparing the results with that of pure PWO crystal. Nb doping improved the luminescence property of PWO and enhanced the percentage of its quick component. The defects in PWO crystal caused by Nb dopant has been studied by means of positron annihilation lifetime spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The results show that Nb dopant increases the concentration of lead vacancy (VPb) as well as the concentration of low-valent oxygen. The Nb5+ will occupy the lattice of W5+ and make some (WO4)2- change to (NbO3+VO)- which will result in the improvement of luminescence performance of PWO crystal.

Abstract:Lead tungstate (PbWO4, PWO) single crystal has been chosen as a new generation scintillation material. The specific heat and thermal diffusivity of PWO single crystal grown by the vertical Bridgman technique is investigated for the first time by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a laser flash technique at (300 to 673) K, respectively. The thermal conductivity is calculated, and it exhibits anisotropy with the values along the [100] axis (K-x,K-y) higher than that along the [001] axis (K-z), which is 2.40 W.m(-1).K-1 and 2.00 W.m(-1).K-1 at room temperature, respectively. Because of the heavier elements of the Pb atom, the PWO crystal has a higher degree of anharmonicity of lattice vibrations and thus has a smaller thermal conductivity than another scintillation material bismuth germanate (BGO).

Abstract:The influence of Gd3+ and Y3+ doping on the low temperature thermoluminescence (TL) of PbWO4(PWO) is investigated. In the case of polycrystal powder, the TL above 180K is eliminated by doping Y3+ or Gd3+ ions. Meanwhile, a new TL peak at lower temperature appeare. For the PWO single crystal there are two TL peaks at about 130 and 253K, but only one single peak at about 130K for PWO:Y crystals. The common effect of doping trivalent ions is to decrease or eliminate the TL above 180K and create a new TL peak at lower temperature. It indicates that the traps responsible for TL above 180K are due to the intrinsic defects which probably are Pb3+ and O-. During the preparation of PWO, the evaporation of the PbO component is easier than that of WO3, which will lead to the deficiency of PbO. The deficiency of O ions can be compensated by annealing in air while the deficiency of Pb is permanent. Therefore in the volume surrounding the Pb vacancy, there is a lack of positive charge. So the charge deficiency in the Pb-sublattic can be most easily balanced by an increase of concentration of Pb3+ and O- Doping Gd3+ or Y3+ can decrease the concentration of Pb3+ and O-. Gd3+ or Y3+ can also play a role of electron traps, which create new TL peaks at 150 and 125K, respectively. The trap depth of Gd3+ and Y3+ are 0.32 and 0.29eV, respectively. The difference between doping Gd3+ and Y3+ can be explained by the difference between their coulomb potentials.

Abstract:Although trivalent ions (such as La3+, Lu3+ and Y3+) doping can significantly improve the radiation hardness of lead tungstate crystals, some Y3+ doping PbWO4 (PWO) crystals showed exceptional irradiation behavior, namely, light yield increase after low dose rate irradiation. In addition the radiation hardness was sensitive to annealing temperature. In this study, we chose typical Y3+ doping crystal samples and investigated the relationship between transmission, light yield and radiation hardness. The experimental results show that high temperature annealing can enhance the absorption band around 430nm, while annealing at 50°C produces different results and can suppress this exceptional behavior. Light output increase not only exists in the top side of the boule, but also in the seed side, and is accompanied with optical transmission change in the wavelengths from 380nm to about 500nm simultaneously. The pre-existing 430nm color centers in as-grown PWO:Y3+ or annealing induced ones are unstable and can be “bleached” by low dose rate irradiation. The results of annealing and irradiation experiments of the samples show that the radiation hardness phenomenon was sensitive to annealing temperature, and thus a proper annealing temperature for PWO crystals was determined.

Abstract:We have successfully fabricated Pb and Y doping Bi2212 single crystals using self - flux solid state reaction method. X - ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the single crystals shows that there is no peak except (001) peak. The calculated lattice parameter indicates that the c - axis length decreases with the increasing of Pb and Y contents. The temperature dependence of out- of- plane resistivity shows that the transition temperature is about 90K.

Abstract:The hydrothermal synthesis process and luminescence properties of Ln3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles have been investigated. Nearly spherical Eu3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles can be observed. The luminescence concentration quenching of Eu3+ in the NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles was found to be similar to that in the NaY(WO4)2 crystals. The upconversion luminescence intensity of the Yb3+–Er3+ codoped NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles was found to be much stronger than that of the Er3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles.
