Abstract:In this paper, starting from JKR adhesive contact theory, a multi-time discrete element method is used to investigate the dynamic particle capture process of a single loaded fibre. The dynamic variation of capture efficiency as well as the influence of the dendrite structure on the dynamic behaviour is discussed. The capture process can roughly be divided into two stages: an initial bare fibre stage and a particle-loaded fibre stage. In the initial stage, the deposited particles only cause a little additional blocking area in contrast to that of the bare fibre, since the ratio of the volume of deposited particles to fibre volume is less than 0.02. In the loaded fibre stage, the forming dendrites of particle on fibre play a dominate role in the capture. Both blocking area and dendrite length increase with the loaded number, leading to a power-law relationship between them. The effects of the particle dendrite growth on the efficiency are also studied. At the early stage, the dendrite dynamic variations, mainly bending, collapsing and breaking off, causes the efficiency rise, by spreading the dendrites from fibre front to side. When the deposited particles exceeds a certain amount, it eventually limit the length of dendrites and hence the blocking area.
