Abstract:A novel dual-band tandem coupler with an arbitrary coupling coefficient is proposed and experimentally proved in this paper. The coupler consists of a typical tandem coupler and an additional transmission line placed between the two pairs of coupled lines. The coupler has a simple structure and can realize arbitrary coupling coefficients over two designated frequencies. Design equations are derived for designing the parameters of the proposed coupler. A prototype of the proposed coupler which operates at 0.9/1.5 GHz with -6dB coupling coefficient is designed, fabricated and measured. The measured results agree well with the EM simulated results.

Abstract:Dual-band rat-race couplers are implemented with double-sided parallel-strip line to provide arbitrary power divisions. Both the uniform-impedance and stepped-impedance cases are explored, and design equations are derived for the two cases. With our method, the rat-race coupler can be quickly developed to satisfy the design specifications. By using phase inverter, arms with arbitrary electrical lengths and characteristic impedances, the areas of components are reduced by 79.5% and 88.6% in comparison with the conventional rat-race coupler. The good performances of the proposed couplers have been demonstrated by their measured and simulated results.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a compact, broadband, and low-loss-mode-evolution-based 2 x 23 dB coupler on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The waveguide widths and separations of the coupler were tapered in an optimal manner using the shortcuts to the adiabaticity method. The coupler, with a similar to 70 mu m total length and 200 nm feature size, exhibited <0.3 dB measured excess loss over a broadband wavelength range from 1500 to 1600 nm. Balanced and unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers fabricated for validation showed extinction ratios larger than 27 and 23 dB, respectively, over a 100 nm bandwidth. Abstract:We designed and demonstrated TE-mode arbitrary power splitters based on adiabatic mode evolution. The power splitters are designed with a footprint of smaller than 12 × 2.9 μm2, fabricated on a 400-nm silicon-on-insulator platform, requiring only a single etch step. The optimization process and the conditions for arbitrary-power splitting are performed using three-dimensional-FDTD simulations. We prove this concept through the fabrication of asymmetrical adiabatic evolution-based power splitters with splitting ratios of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. The fabricated devices are shown to agree closely with simulation results. Broadband operation with low insertion loss of 0.11–0.6 dB is demonstrated across the 3.66–3.89 μm wavelength range (230 nm). This component has applications in a multitude of areas such as spectroscopic optical sensing and optical phased arrays photonic integrated circuits etc.

Abstract:In this study, two different adiabatic couplers are proposed based on the adiabatic mode evolution mechanism in the two-waveguide system. The mode conversion/transfer in vertically asymmetric adiabatic couplers is investigated. The proposed adiabatic couplers couple the beam modes from one waveguide to another using adiabatic mode evolution and enable the mode conversion/transfer between the designed modes. The k -vector frequency-dispersion diagram for the first adiabatic coupler is calculated, and the variation of the guided mode in the adiabatic coupler with the waveguide width is shown to guide the design of adiabatic couplers. The design results demonstrate that the proposed adiabatic mode couplers are substantially shorter than the linear-shape connection, but can achieve the same power mode conversion efficiency. The main function of the first adiabatic mode coupler designed is to convert the TE 0 mode in one port to the TM 0 mode in the other port, the structure only needs a length of 108 μm to achieve 90 % power conversion efficiency, and the traditional linear-shape connection requires 1540 μm to achieve the same conversion efficiency. As a result, the proposed adiabatic coupler size is 14 times shorter than the conventional design. Moreover, in the design of the second 3-dB adiabatic coupler, the adiabatic mode evolution transfer of the two lowest-order even and odd eigenmodes is implemented in a two tapered ridge waveguide system for 3-dB energy splitting. The proposed coupler will achieve a transfer efficiency greater than 90 % in the range of 1400 nm to 3760 nm when the device length is 47.5 μm, which is an ultra-wide operating bandwidth range.

Abstract:A design of a 1 × 2 multimode 3 dB optical power splitter using tapered couplers is proposed and investigated in this paper. As an example, a 1 × 2 splitter processing five-lowest order transverse-electric-polarized modes is designed and optimized by utilizing finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. To verify the feasibility of this novel design, the optimized device is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The coupling lengths of tapered couplers are respectively 6.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 3.5 µm, 5.0 µm, 5.0 µm, 7.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 5.0 µm, and 8.0 µm. Measurement results reveal that, for the fabricated splitter, the power uniformity varies from 0.041 to 0.88 dB, the crosstalk ranges from -23.96 to -14.12 dB, and the insertion loss changes from 0.089 to 1.50 dB within a bandwidth from 1520 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:We design and experimentally demonstrate compact and robust adiabaticity engineered couplers (AECs) with design intended splitting ratios (SRs) for the silicon-on-insulator platform. Adiabatic couplers (ACs) with variable SRs can be designed by output waveguide width-differences. By analyzing the mode-evolution region of ACs, we redistribute the adiabaticity parameter by engineering the taper function to obtain fast quasiadiabatic evolution, thus reducing the device footprints. AECs with design-intended SRs exhibit broad bandwidth and robustness against fabrication variations. We experimentally demonstrate compact AECs with average SRs of 22%/78% and 15%/85% with mode-evolution lengths of 42 m and 25 m over a bandwidth of 70 nm, i.e., from 1500 to 1570 for the fundamental transverse electric (TE) mode.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact dual-band coupler with arbitrary power division ratio using broadside-coupled microstrip has been proposed, designed, and measured. The proposed coupler is formed by two three-section microstrip lines and a common ground plane with three rectangular shaped slots used for coupling. Simple analysis method based on the even-odd mode technique has been applied, design equations are then derived. With the even- and odd-mode characteristic admittances, the initial geometry parameters of the proposed coupler are obtained by using the empirical formulas. The coupler features a wide frequency ratio range, arbitrary power dividing ratio, compact size, and wide bandwidth. For verification purposes, two prototypes of the proposed couplers with a coupling ratio of 3 and 6dB, operating at the frequency of 2.4/5.2GHz, have been designed, simulated, fabricated, and measured. Good agreements have been shown between the simulated and the measured results.

Abstract:A novel coupled-line impedance-transforming structure with two parallel short-circuit stubs is proposed to design a wideband branch-line coupler with arbitrary power division in this article. In order to design this modified wideband branch-line coupler, analytical synthesis equations are obtained. As typical examples, four wideband branch-line couplers with different power dividing ratios are presented. The widest 20-dB return loss and isolation fractional bandwidth in these four numerical examples is almost 38%. Finally, two microstrip branch-line couplers operating at 1 GHz are fabricated and measured. One of these couplers has equal power division and a measured 13.9-dB return loss and isolation fractional bandwidth of 32.8%. The other one has 3-dB unequal power division and a measured 12.7-dB return loss and isolation fractional bandwidth of 37.6%. Obviously, this proposed branch-line coupler has several advantages, including a wide band, a compact size, an unequal power division, easy implementation (simple structure), and an analytical design method.

Abstract:A novel design methodology for asymmetric coupled line tandem couplers with arbitrary terminal real impedances and arbitrary power dividing ratio is proposed in this article. By reasonably equating the quarter-wavelength asymmetric coupled line section with multiple single quarter-wavelength transmission lines in the vicinity of the central frequency point, an equivalent branch line model of the asymmetric coupled line tandem coupler is established and analyzed. Relationships between four terminal real impedances, four image impedances, and the power dividing ratio ${r}_{{p}}$ , for satisfying conditions of the perfect isolation, perfect match of ports, and power dividing requirement simultaneously, are deduced. The simplified analysis method and design formulas for symmetric coupled line tandem couplers are also presented and verified from the simulation level. Based on the extraction of unit length resistance, inductance, conductance, and capacitance parameters from full-wave simulation S-parameters of coupled lines, procedures for quickly and accurately obtaining the initial structural parameters values are provided in detail, significantly reducing the burden of subsequent optimizations. Two tandem couplers, respectively, with power coupling degrees (dB) of 2 dB ( $r_{{p}}\approx 0.5849$ ) and 3 dB ( $r_{{p}}$ $=$ 1) were designed and fabricated. Both couplers are very compact (0.0073 $\lambda_{{g}}^{{2}}$ for 3 dB), maintain good orthogonality between the through and coupled ports, achieve the broadband property without introducing additional circuits or components, and strictly meet the expected coupling degree. The great consistency between the simulated and measured results powerfully proves the rationality of the proposed analysis theory, as well as the validity of our design methodology.

Abstract:Abstract-A novel unequal Wilkinson power divider is presented. A coupled-line section with two shorts is proposed to realize the high characteristic impedance line, which cannot be implemented by conventional microstrip fabrication technique due to fabrication limitation. The proposed coupled-line structure is compatible with single layer integration and can be easily designed based on an even-odd mode analysis. As a design example, a 10:1 Wilkinson power divider at 2 GHz is fabricated and measured. The measured -10 dB bandwidth of S11 is about 16%, and the isolation S32 is better than -20 dB. The measured amplitude balance between output port 2 and port 3 is between -10.20 dB and -9.52 dB, and the corresponding phase difference is between 0deg and 4.6deg.

Abstract:This paper presents a compact four-way power divider based on micro-coaxial lines. For ease of testing, two of the same power dividers are placed back-to-back, and CPW to micro-coaxial Line transitions are added to input/output ports. The whole structure is directly measured on wafer using a probe system. In W band, the measured return loss is greater than 15 dB and the insertion loss is smaller than 1.3 dB.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate a new type of 3-dB coupler that has an ultra-broadband operational range starting from 1300 nm to 1600 nm with low fabrication sensitivity. Overall device size is 800 micron including in/out S-bend waveguides. The coupler is an asymmetric non-uniform directional coupler that consists of two tapered waveguides. One of the coupler arms is shifted by 130 micron in the propagation direction, which reduces the phase mismatch between the odd and even mode of the coupled system resulting in a better wavelength-flattened response compared to a not shifted coupler. Moreover, compared to a long adiabatic coupler, we achieved a similar wavelength response at 16 times smaller device length. The couplers were fabricated using the silicon nitride platform of Lionix International. We also experimentally demonstrated an optical switch that is made by using two of these couplers in a Mach Zehnder interferometer configuration. According to experimental results, this optical switch exhibits -10 dB of extinction ratio over a 100 nm wavelength range (1500-1600 nm). Our results indicate that the asymmetric non-uniform directional coupler holds great promise for various applications including optical imaging, telecommunications, and reconfigurable photonic processors where compact, fabrication-tolerant and wavelength-insensitive couplers are essential.

Abstract:Microwave couplers are used in large numbers in beamforming networks, and their miniaturization can lead to a significant size reduction in the overall phased array. While the miniaturization of 3 dB couplers in the transverse direction (width) has been given considerable attention in the literature, there is minimal to no information on reducing coupler length. This is because of the trade-off between aperture length, bandwidth and coupling strength. The Bethe–Hole theory requires adding multiple apertures in the longitudinal direction for wide bandwidth, thus increasing the device length. Another factor is the aperture size, which determines the coupling strength and puts additional strain on the compactness of a 3 dB coupler. Contrariwise, this paper proposes to merge two weak (and hence compact) coupling mechanisms to design a wideband 3 dB coupler. This is achieved by using a longitudinal rectangular slot and three cross-slots in the transverse direction. Because of weak coupling, the slot sizes are smaller than a conventional 3 dB coupler, hence yielding a device whose length is less than one guided wavelength (λg) without compromising the bandwidth. The presented coupler is 0.63 λg in length, which is smaller than the state-of-the-art while maintaining a fractional bandwidth of 37% that is comparable to half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) couplers.

Abstract:ABSTRACTA compact two‐way equal power divider using three‐line coupled structure is proposed. The effective length of the power divider is around a quarter‐wavelength. To enhance the bandwidth of operation, a half‐wavelength resonator is constructed by introducing a short‐ended stub to combine with the open‐ended microstrip line. A prototype of the power divider is designed and fabricated. The measured input return loss, output return loss, isolation, amplitude imbalance, and phase imbalance are better than 10.3, 14.4, 10.1, 0.2 dB, and 3.2°, respectively, across the entire ultra‐wideband (UWB). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Heterogeneous integration (HI) is a rapidly developing field aimed at achieving high-density integration and miniaturization of devices for complex practical radio frequency (RF) applications. In this study, we present the design and implementation of two 3 dB directional couplers utilizing the broadside-coupling mechanism and silicon-based integrated passive device (IPD) technology. The type A coupler incorporates a defect ground structure (DGS) to enhance coupling, while type B employs wiggly-coupled lines to improve directivity. Measurement results demonstrate that type A achieves <−16.16 dB isolation and <−22.32 dB return loss with a relative bandwidth of 60.96% in the 6.5–12.2 GHz range, while type B achieves <−21.21 dB isolation and <−23.95 dB return loss in the first band at 7–13 GHz, <−22.17 dB isolation and <−19.67 dB return loss in the second band at 28–32.5 GHz, and <−12.79 dB isolation and <−17.02 dB return loss in the third band at 49.5–54.5 GHz. The proposed couplers are well suited for low cost, high performance system-on-package radio frequency front-end circuits in wireless communication systems.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel W-band substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) power combiner/divider is analyzed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally/numerically, based on the antipodal fin-line SIW-rectangular waveguide (SIW-RW) transition and longitudinal slot coupling techniques. This antipodal fin-line SIW-RW transition can work at the frequency band of 86.4 GHz– 106.1 GHz with return loss larger than 15 dB and inserting loss less than 2 dB. By combining the antipodal fin-line SIW-RW into the four-way longitudinal-slot SIW coupling structure, a novel back-to-back power dividing/combining system is achieved, which can operate at the frequency band of 92.8 GHz– 93.8 GHz with return loss more than 10 dB and insertion loss less than 3.9 dB. Such a design can be used in future for spatial power amplifier applications.

Abstract:In this article, a broadband microstrip-to-waveguide transition with antisymmetric tapered probe as well as a W-band power divider/combiner using dual proposed antisymmetric tapered probes is presented. Because of tapered microstrip shapes and metallic steps, the proposed transition is proved to be broadband, efficient, and compact. The insertion loss of the transition sample is less than 0.56 dB between 75 GHz and 100 GHz. Under the assistance of the gradually changed waveguide and dual parallel tapered probes, the operating band of the power divider/combiner has been significantly improved, which is adequate to work in the whole W-band. A back-to-back prototype of the divider/combiner is fabricated and measured. The measured insertion loss of the single divider/combiner is less than 0.29 dB between 90 GHz and 100 GHz, and agrees well with the simulations. Because the circuit size is smaller than 8.0 mm x 2.2 mm (Thanks to the excellent performance and compact size), the proposed design can find wide applications in miniaturized MCM/MMIC systems.
