Abstract:Recently, we proposed the concept of superlattice-like (SLL) phase change optical disk and demonstrated excellent high-speed recording properties for disks adopting this SLL structure (T.C. Chong et al, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. vol. 39, p. 737, 2000, and J. Appl. Phys. vol. 91, 2002). This technology paves an alternative way to develop phase change materials for optical disks. On the other hand, with the development of DVD technology, DVD recording is being introduced in two different markets simultaneously, i.e., the DVD video recorder and the DVD writer for personal computer use. It is expected that the recording speed of rewritable DVD media should be like the rewritable CD, which is compatible with CD writers with different speeds. Therefore, it is necessary to develop rewritable DVD media to cover a broad range of recording speeds in order to make them compatible with different DVD recorders and drives. In this contribution, we present recent progress on the recording properties of the SLL disk at different recording speeds by tuning the stack structure, aiming to make the SLL disk multispeed compatible.

Abstract:A recording performance comparison was conducted over a disc rotation speed range from 6.0 to 18.9 m/s using adynamic tester between the disc with a superlattice-like structure (SLL) and conventional discs of Ge1Sb2Te4 and Ge1Sb2Te4. The recording layer of the SLL disc consisted of alternating thin layers of two different phase change materials, i.e., GeTe and Sb2Te3. The SLL disc demonstrated a better recording performance at high speed than the Ge1Sb2Te4 and Ge1Sb4Te7 discs in terms of jitter, erasability and durability, A distinct eye pattern was observed even after 100000 write/erase cycles. The carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) above 50 dB and a data transfer rate of 47 Mbit/s were achieved at a rotation speed of 18.9 m/s. The excellent recording properties of the SLL disc were attributed to the reduced thermal conductivity and the favorable layout of the SLL structure for crystallization.

Abstract:In order to increase the crystallization speed and data transfer rate (DTR), a superlattice-like structure (SLL) was applied to the recording layer of phase change optical disks. Unlike the conventional phase change layer, the recording layer with the SLL structure consisted of alternating thin layers of two different phase change materials, i.e., GeTe and Sb2Te3. Although neither GeTe nor Sb2Te3 could be used as a phase change layer material for practical applications, present experimental results revealed that the phase change optical disk with the SLL structure demonstrated an excellent recording property that could meet practical recording requirements. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to confirm that the SLL structure could be preserved after many times of melting and quenching. Dynamic properties of the optical recording disk with the SLL structure were investigated with a 1 T pulse duration of 8 ns and a constant linear velocity of 19 m/s. A clear eye pattern was observed. The carrier-to-noise ratio was about 58 dB and a DTR of 47 Mbit/s was achieved. The DTR would be as high as 140 Mbit/s if the blue light is used. It has been proven that the SLL structure is a useful means to increase the DTR of phase change optical recording disks. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:An initialization-free Blu-ray disc was proposed as a candidate for multispeed blue laser recording and successfully fabricated. Experiment results of the initialization-free Blu-ray disc showed that it had a multispeed blue laser recording capability with speeds of 1 to 3x. The crystallization acceleration effect caused by additional layers and the rapid cooling caused by the initialization-free disc structure were suggested as the physical mechanism of multispeed recording in an initialization-free Blu-ray disc.

Abstract:Two structures super-resolution near-field phase-change optical disks with masks Sb-2 Te-3 layer and a thermal shield layer in front of the mask layer on Blu-ray substrates were studied theoretically and experimentally. Optical simulation was conducted and the modulation transfer function (MTF) was calculated. MTF calculation results has revealed that the super-RENS optical disk exhibited the maximum response when nearly half of the laser spot was covered by the mask. The thermal simulation was used to find the optimum condition meaning that half of the laser beam is covered by the aperture on the mask layer. The recording signal and thermal stability on different structures were measured and analyzed. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experiment results.

Abstract:A superlattice-like (SLL) structure was applied to phase-change optical recording. The recording layer consisting of alternating thin layers of two different phase-change materials, GeTe and Sb2Te3, were grown by magnetron sputtering on polycarbonate substrates. Land/groove optical recording was adopted to suppress crosstalk and obtain a large track density. Dynamic properties of the SLL disc were investigated with the shortest 1T pulse duration of 8 ns. Clear eye pattern was observed after 10000 direct overwrite cycles. Erasability above 20 dB was achieved at a constant linear velocity of 19 m/s. Carrier-noise ratio (CNR) kept above 46 dB when the recording frequency reaches 21 MHz. The SLL phase change optical disc demonstrates a better recording performance than the Ge1Sb2Te4 and Ge1Sb4Te7 discs in terms of CNR, erasability, and overwrite jitter.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a new simple structure of dual-layer rewritable phase-change optical discs. The disc consists of only three conventional materials for rewritable disc, a phase-change layer, dielectric layers and a reflective layer. Recording, erasing and overwriting in both recording mediums of the new disc structure are demonstrated and characterized. Both recording mediums can be rewritten using the conventional recording power defined by digital versatile disc (DVD) standard.

Abstract:The mechanism of the aperture-type Blu-ray super-resolution near-field phase change optical disk with a mask layer of Sb2Te3 was studied theoretically and experimentally. Optical and thermal simulations were carried out to study the relationships of carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) with reading speed and power. The theoretical prediction results were in good agreement with the experimental results. It was found that a thermal shield layer (TSL) with a high thermal conductivity, which is inserted into the dielectric layer sandwiched by a mask layer and a phase change layer, can significantly enhance readout thermal stability for the super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) optical disk.

Abstract:Super-resolution near-field phase-change Blu-ray-type optical disks with a mask layer of Sb2Te3 were studied theoretically and experimentally with a laser wavelength of 405 nm and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.85. The modulation transfer function (MTF) was calculated and the thermal performance was simulated by the finite element method. Super-resolution near-field phase-change Blu-ray-type optical disks with different structures were fabricated and measured. It was shown that the thermal shield layer was helpful in reducing recorded mark size and improving readout stability. Recorded marks as small as 16 nm were observed. The relevant mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Super-resolution near-field optical disk is one of the solutions to overcome diffraction limit and achieve high density optical recording. In this paper, a structure of super-resolution near-field phase-change optical disk with a thin thermal shield layer behind the recording layer is proposed. The optical disks with the new structure were studied theoretically and experimentally. Thermal simulation shows that the thermal shield layer can reduce the phase change layer temperature, thus improve the thermal stability of the disks. The disks with this structure were fabricated and characterized. The experiment results are in good agreement with the simulation results.

Abstract:A new method of multispeed rewritable optical recording is presented. An initialization-free phase-change optical disk is proposed as a candidate for multispeed rewritable optical recording. The simulated results of the initialization-free disk at different linear velocities show that the cooling rate increases from approximately 18.69% to 37.96%. A model that combines the crystallization acceleration effect due to the additional layers and the rapid cooling rate due to the initialization-free disk structure is proposed as the physical mechanism of the multispeed recording method with an initialization-free disk. The dynamic optical-recording properties of the initialization-free DVD-RAM disk at different recording speeds shows that the initialization-free phase-change optical-recording disk is compatible with a broad range of recording speeds from 3.49 to 12.21 m/s. Abstract:Superlattice-like phase change optical disks, where the recording layer consists of alternating thin layers with two different phase change materials of GeTe and Sb2Te3, have been fabricated. The optical and thermal properties were simulated and measured. Samples were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) after annealing. The peaks of Ge2Sb2Te5 were observed, which indicates that Ge2Sb2Te5 was formed at the interface between GeTe and Sb2Te3. The recording, erasing and overwriting properties were investigated. The signal differentiation in writing, reading and erasing was observed at the pulse width of 7 ns, which indicates that the superlattice-like structure can effectively shorten the crystallization time. The overwriting cycle was measured using a static tester. Within 10000 times no significant change in the modulation amplitude was observed.

Abstract:In order to make the optical disk having good recording/reading performance and long-term stability, the multilayer structure of the phase-change optical disk must be optimized. By using the design software capable of simulating and analyzing the reading process for phase-change optical disk design, a phase-change optical disk structure for the blue laser (405 nm) was designed. The relation between the multilayer's optical parameters (reflectivity and reflectivity contrast) and the film thickness of the structure and the depth of the groove are studied. The optimum structures of the phase-change optical disk are lower ZnS-SiO 2/AglnTeSb/upper ZnS-SiO 2/Al layered structure of 100 nm/10 nm/25 nm/60 nm for land recording and 140 nm/15 nm/30 nm/60 nm for groove recording. The depth of the groove is 50 nm.

Abstract:All-optical magnetization switching with features of low-power consumption and high writing speed is a promising road map to satisfy the demand for volume data storage. To promote denser and faster magnetic recording technologies, herein, all-optical helicity-dependent switching (AO-HDS) in multi-layer magnetic recording is proposed based on the chromatic aberration of an optical lens (Thorlabs's N-BK7 plano-convex uncoated lens). The power of the incident beams and the thickness of the multi-layer magnetic recording film are designed carefully. Besides, the uniformity of this multi-layer magnetic recording is optimized. At last, a prototype system of information multiplexing based on this multi-layer magnetic recording technology is constructed as well. Flexible and controllable magnetization reversals in different layers are also demonstrated by tuning the wavelength and helicity of working beams. We believe that such a prototype system can pave the way for increasing the storage density in an effective and low-cost mode.

Abstract:A novel multi-dimensional (MD) optical storage was presented, which was realized by utilizing the space between tracks. Based on scalar diffraction theory, the channel bits parameters of the multi-dimensional optical storage were optimized, and the linear and nonlinear signals were analyzed accurately. Therefore, the format of the multi-dimensional optical disc was obtained, which makes the detection of readout signal easier. With respect to servo, coding and readout physics parameter of channel, the multi-dimensional optical disc is compatible with traditional disc such as Blu-ray disc (BD). Also, the novel multi-dimensional optical storage is able to achieve a doubled density and a ten-fold readout data rate compared with traditional optical discs.

Abstract:We have developed a new inorganic write-once optical disk for an optical recording system with a numerical aperture of 0.85 and a 405 nm blue-violet laser diode. The recording layer is composed of multi-layered structure of alternating Mg-based alloy layer and Si layer. Our experimental results showed that the recording sensitivity of the optical disk is strongly dependent on the stack structure of the recording layer, which can be optimized through adjusting the number of the component layers. Dynamic experiment results showed that the write-once optical disk has a low-to-high polarity and jitter value below 7.5% can be achieved at both 1 x and 2 x speeds. Effects of the multi-layered recording layer structure and the low-to-high polarity on recording performance are discussed.
