Abstract:In order to increase the crystallization speed and data transfer rate (DTR), a superlattice-like structure (SLL) was applied to the recording layer of phase change optical disks. Unlike the conventional phase change layer, the recording layer with the SLL structure consisted of alternating thin layers of two different phase change materials, i.e., GeTe and Sb2Te3. Although neither GeTe nor Sb2Te3 could be used as a phase change layer material for practical applications, present experimental results revealed that the phase change optical disk with the SLL structure demonstrated an excellent recording property that could meet practical recording requirements. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to confirm that the SLL structure could be preserved after many times of melting and quenching. Dynamic properties of the optical recording disk with the SLL structure were investigated with a 1 T pulse duration of 8 ns and a constant linear velocity of 19 m/s. A clear eye pattern was observed. The carrier-to-noise ratio was about 58 dB and a DTR of 47 Mbit/s was achieved. The DTR would be as high as 140 Mbit/s if the blue light is used. It has been proven that the SLL structure is a useful means to increase the DTR of phase change optical recording disks. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Recently, we proposed the concept of superlattice-like (SLL) phase change optical disk and demonstrated excellent high-speed recording properties for disks adopting this SLL structure (T.C. Chong et al, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. vol. 39, p. 737, 2000, and J. Appl. Phys. vol. 91, 2002). This technology paves an alternative way to develop phase change materials for optical disks. On the other hand, with the development of DVD technology, DVD recording is being introduced in two different markets simultaneously, i.e., the DVD video recorder and the DVD writer for personal computer use. It is expected that the recording speed of rewritable DVD media should be like the rewritable CD, which is compatible with CD writers with different speeds. Therefore, it is necessary to develop rewritable DVD media to cover a broad range of recording speeds in order to make them compatible with different DVD recorders and drives. In this contribution, we present recent progress on the recording properties of the SLL disk at different recording speeds by tuning the stack structure, aiming to make the SLL disk multispeed compatible.

Abstract:Superlattice-like phase change optical disks, where the recording layer consists of alternating thin layers with two different phase change materials of GeTe and Sb2Te3, have been fabricated. The optical and thermal properties were simulated and measured. Samples were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) after annealing. The peaks of Ge2Sb2Te5 were observed, which indicates that Ge2Sb2Te5 was formed at the interface between GeTe and Sb2Te3. The recording, erasing and overwriting properties were investigated. The signal differentiation in writing, reading and erasing was observed at the pulse width of 7 ns, which indicates that the superlattice-like structure can effectively shorten the crystallization time. The overwriting cycle was measured using a static tester. Within 10000 times no significant change in the modulation amplitude was observed.

Abstract:Super-resolution near-field optical disk is one of the solutions to overcome diffraction limit and achieve high density optical recording. In this paper, a structure of super-resolution near-field phase-change optical disk with a thin thermal shield layer behind the recording layer is proposed. The optical disks with the new structure were studied theoretically and experimentally. Thermal simulation shows that the thermal shield layer can reduce the phase change layer temperature, thus improve the thermal stability of the disks. The disks with this structure were fabricated and characterized. The experiment results are in good agreement with the simulation results.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a new simple structure of dual-layer rewritable phase-change optical discs. The disc consists of only three conventional materials for rewritable disc, a phase-change layer, dielectric layers and a reflective layer. Recording, erasing and overwriting in both recording mediums of the new disc structure are demonstrated and characterized. Both recording mediums can be rewritten using the conventional recording power defined by digital versatile disc (DVD) standard.

Abstract:A recording performance comparison was conducted over a disc rotation speed range from 6.0 to 18.9 m/s using adynamic tester between the disc with a superlattice-like structure (SLL) and conventional discs of Ge1Sb2Te4 and Ge1Sb2Te4. The recording layer of the SLL disc consisted of alternating thin layers of two different phase change materials, i.e., GeTe and Sb2Te3. The SLL disc demonstrated a better recording performance at high speed than the Ge1Sb2Te4 and Ge1Sb4Te7 discs in terms of jitter, erasability and durability, A distinct eye pattern was observed even after 100000 write/erase cycles. The carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) above 50 dB and a data transfer rate of 47 Mbit/s were achieved at a rotation speed of 18.9 m/s. The excellent recording properties of the SLL disc were attributed to the reduced thermal conductivity and the favorable layout of the SLL structure for crystallization.

Abstract:A nonchalcogenide inorganic blu-ray super-resolution near-field optical disk was successfully developed using an Al-based metallic glass as the recording layer. Data were recorded based on the large reflectivity change obtained during transformation from the amorphous state to the crystalline state upon laser irradiation. The optical and thermal properties of the Al90Ni3Gd7 metallic glass thin film were studied. The crystallization and melting temperatures were higher and more thermally stable than that of conventionally used Ge2Sb2Te5 chalcogenide phase-change recording material. Al90Ni3Gd7 metallic glass also demonstrated fast phase-change response to blue laser. Dynamic recording performance of this new structure showed good carrier-to-noise ratio and readout stability.

Abstract:The removable and rewritable high-density phase-change optical disk is attractive for high-definition television (HDTV), digital TV and internet downloading. Super-resolution near-field technology is one of the most promising technologies for achieving ultra-high density recording and is considered a more feasible way of near-field optical recording with simpler recording-head design, less mechanical damage, no contamination and higher recording speed. Developing new structures and searching for new mask materials are two important issues.

Abstract:Phase-change recording media1) are widely used in rewritable optical disks such as the CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD±RW and Blu-ray disc2). Rewritable phase-change optical disks have several different applications corresponding to different recording speed. For example, DVD phase-change disks for the video application are usually used at a low rotation speed, which is suitable for real time operation; DVD phase-change disks for the personal computer application are usually used at a high rotation speed to achieve a high data transfer rate. Even for the same application, the recording speed always increases because of the market demand. Therefore it is necessary to develop rewritable phase-change disk compatible with a broad range of recording speed.

Abstract:The dependence of the optical and thermal characteristics of phase-change optical disks on the multilayer disk structure was analyzed and simulated. Using the integrated software developed, a phase-change optical disk structure for a blue laser is designed with both optical and thermal considerations, and a suitable disk structure is proposed. Based on the designed disk structure, writing and rewriting processes are simulated, and the results are satisfactory.

Abstract:A superlattice-like (SLL) structure was applied to phase-change optical recording. The recording layer consisting of alternating thin layers of two different phase-change materials, GeTe and Sb2Te3, were grown by magnetron sputtering on polycarbonate substrates. Land/groove optical recording was adopted to suppress crosstalk and obtain a large track density. Dynamic properties of the SLL disc were investigated with the shortest 1T pulse duration of 8 ns. Clear eye pattern was observed after 10000 direct overwrite cycles. Erasability above 20 dB was achieved at a constant linear velocity of 19 m/s. Carrier-noise ratio (CNR) kept above 46 dB when the recording frequency reaches 21 MHz. The SLL phase change optical disc demonstrates a better recording performance than the Ge1Sb2Te4 and Ge1Sb4Te7 discs in terms of CNR, erasability, and overwrite jitter.

Abstract:A structure of super-resolution near-field phase-change optical disk with localized surface plasmon coupling effect is proposed. A localized surface plasmon coupling layer (LSPCL) was introduced to form a coupled localized surface plasmons (CLSP) with the mask layer. Recording marks as small as 31 and 36 nm were observed in two structures, which were both much smaller than the smallest mark of 56 nm observed from the conventional one without LSPCL. CLSP not only can reduce mark size but it can also improve carrier-to-noise ratio of recording marks. The thermal stability of the disk was also studied. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Phase change materials are widely used for date storage. The most widespread and important applications are rewritable optical disc and Phase Change Random Access Memory (PCRAM), which utilizes the light and electric induced phase change respectively. For decades, miniaturization has been the major driving force to increase the density. Now the working unit area of the current data storage media is in the order of nano-scale. On the nano-scale, extreme dimensional and nano-structural constraints and the large proportion of interfaces will cause the deviation of the phase change behavior from that of bulk. Hence an in-depth understanding of nanophase change and the related issues has become more and more important. Nanophase change can be defined as: phase change at the scale within nano range of 100 nm, which is size-dependent, interface-dominated and surrounding materials related. Nanophase change can be classified into two groups, thin film related and structure related. Film thickness and clapping materials are key factors for thin film type, while structure shape, size and surrounding materials are critical parameters for structure type. In this paper, the recent development of nanophase change is reviewed, including crystallization of small element at nano size, thickness dependence of crystallization, effect of clapping layer on the phase change of phase change thin film and so on. The applications of nanophase change technology on data storage is introduced, including optical recording such as super lattice like optical disc, initialization free disc, near field, super-RENS, dual layer, multi level, probe storage, and PCRAM including, superlattice-like structure, side edge structure, and line type structure. Future key research issues of nanophase change are also discussed.
Simulation and Characteristics of Phase Change Optical Disk

Abstract:An integrated design software to analyze optical, thermal and crystallization characteristics of phase change optical disks has been developed. It has been applied to simulate the reflectivity of nano-scale thin films, mark size, effect of super-RENS and effects of sulfur atom diffusion on the recording performance. In order to verify the simulation results, a set of experiments has been designed and carried out. The study results show that the software can simulate accurately the practical processes and then obtain reliable results. The software has been applied to design DVD-RAM 4.7 GB disks with multi layer structure. Based on these simulation results, 4.7 GB/side DVD-RAM disks that can fully meet the DVD-RAM standard have been successfully fabricated, which shows that the software is a powerful tool for the phase change optical disk design.

Abstract:Multilevel data storage (ML) is a new method in the optical storage field, which is also a trend for improving the capability of future optical discs. This article introduces several ML methods based on phase-change media including pit depth modulation (PDM) and mark radial width modulation (MRWM). In addition, some disadvantages and advantages concerning the principle of these methods will be discussed. Finally, a new ML method will be advanced, through which the levels in one recording pit will be increased evidently.
Design of the Multilayer Structure for Blue Laser Phase Change Optical Disk

Abstract:In order to make the optical disk having good recording/reading performance and long-term stability, the multilayer structure of the phase-change optical disk must be optimized. By using the design software capable of simulating and analyzing the reading process for phase-change optical disk design, a phase-change optical disk structure for the blue laser (405 nm) was designed. The relation between the multilayer's optical parameters (reflectivity and reflectivity contrast) and the film thickness of the structure and the depth of the groove are studied. The optimum structures of the phase-change optical disk are lower ZnS-SiO 2/AglnTeSb/upper ZnS-SiO 2/Al layered structure of 100 nm/10 nm/25 nm/60 nm for land recording and 140 nm/15 nm/30 nm/60 nm for groove recording. The depth of the groove is 50 nm.

Abstract:Phase change recording is an emerging technology for achieving removable high density data storage compatible with CD or DVD ROM. The data transfer rate (DTR) is one of the most important parameters for PC optical recording disks. DTR is primarily limited by the crystallization speed of the amorphous marks in the recording layer. The amorphous marks cannot be completely erased when the crystallization speed is not fast enough to match the linear velocity of the laser light spot with respect to the disk. This would cause distortions in the shape of the overwritten marks, and results in a high level of noise. Therefore the re-crystallization behavior of the phase change layer is fundamental to phase change recording technology. AgInSbTe and GeSbTe are two main phase change materials used in current phase change optical disks. The complete erasing time (CET) of the former one increases strongly with an increase of the size of the written mark, and therefore is called a growth-driven material. The CET of the latter increases only slightly with the increase of the size of the written mark, and therefore is called a nucleation-driven material. In order to achieve high DTR, we must study the dynamic erasing behavior of phase change optical disks. This article addresses how marks are erased in rewritable phase change optical disks.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength and multi-level optical storage based on novel photochromic materials is a promising approach to increase recording density and transfer rates signicantly. In our research, three laser beams with dierent wavelength are simultaneously used to record information in one recording layer, which consists three kind of photochromic materials with spectrum sensitivity suitable for each used laser beam. On the other hand, the reectivity of photochromic materials varies nonlinearly with the exposure energy, which shows feasible for multilevel optical recording. The principle of the experimental system construction and a results are described in this paper. The proposed multi-wavelength and multi-level photochromic recording has the great potential to be applicable for future high density optical data storage.

Abstract:A super-resolution near-field phase-change optical disk with a new mask layer of Sb2Te3 was studied. The disks were fabricated and characterized. The problem of thermal stability for the conventional Super-RENS (Super-Resolution Near-field Structure) was studied for the first time. In order to solve the problem of poor thermal stability, two new structures with a thermal shield layer that can significantly improve thermal stability were proposed, fabricated, and analyzed. Recording marks as small as 56 nm were observed.
