Abstract:An initialization-free Blu-ray disc was proposed as a candidate for multispeed blue laser recording and successfully fabricated. Experiment results of the initialization-free Blu-ray disc showed that it had a multispeed blue laser recording capability with speeds of 1 to 3x. The crystallization acceleration effect caused by additional layers and the rapid cooling caused by the initialization-free disc structure were suggested as the physical mechanism of multispeed recording in an initialization-free Blu-ray disc.

Abstract:An initialization-free method of producing blue-laser rewritable optical discs is proposed. After designing the disc, finding a suitable additional layer material and optimizing the film thickness of each layer, the initialization-free Blu-ray Disc was successfully fabricated. No obvious deterioration of writing/erasing properties was observed in the initialization-free Blu-ray Disc compared with a conventional Blu-ray Disc. Moreover, the initialization-free Blu-ray Disc is more suitable for highspeed recording.

Abstract:A new method of multispeed rewritable optical recording is presented. An initialization-free phase-change optical disk is proposed as a candidate for multispeed rewritable optical recording. The simulated results of the initialization-free disk at different linear velocities show that the cooling rate increases from approximately 18.69% to 37.96%. A model that combines the crystallization acceleration effect due to the additional layers and the rapid cooling rate due to the initialization-free disk structure is proposed as the physical mechanism of the multispeed recording method with an initialization-free disk. The dynamic optical-recording properties of the initialization-free DVD-RAM disk at different recording speeds shows that the initialization-free phase-change optical-recording disk is compatible with a broad range of recording speeds from 3.49 to 12.21 m/s. Abstract:Phase-change recording media1) are widely used in rewritable optical disks such as the CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD±RW and Blu-ray disc2). Rewritable phase-change optical disks have several different applications corresponding to different recording speed. For example, DVD phase-change disks for the video application are usually used at a low rotation speed, which is suitable for real time operation; DVD phase-change disks for the personal computer application are usually used at a high rotation speed to achieve a high data transfer rate. Even for the same application, the recording speed always increases because of the market demand. Therefore it is necessary to develop rewritable phase-change disk compatible with a broad range of recording speed.

Abstract:Disk structure optimization, thermal balance design and a new writing strategy are proposed to further widen the speed range of multispeed recording for an initialization-free phase-change disk. Simulated results show a high cooling rate. Experimental results show that the initialization-free phase-change disk with three improvement methods has a broad range of recording speeds from 3.49 to 20.94 m/s, which correspond to a rotation speed of 1 to 6 times that of digital versatile disk-read only memory (DVD-ROM), respectively.

Abstract:The initialization-free dual-layer phase-change disk was proposed for the skipping of the initialization process and the reduction of production time and product cost in the production of dual-layer phase-change disk. The computer simulation and disk design of the initialization-free dual-layer disk were carried out. The initialization-free dual-layer phase-change optical disks with Sb2Te3 additional layers were successfully fabricated. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation and design results. No significant deterioration was observed in the initialization-free dual-layer phase-change optical disk compared with the conventional dual-layer phase-change disk.

Abstract:For the rewritable dual-layer phase-change optical disk, before information is recorded on this disk, the initialization process that changes two phase-change recording layers from the as-deposited amorphous state to the crystalline state must be completed. However, the initialization process of a dual-layer disk, specially the second medium, is very difficult and the time required for the initialization process using a laser beam is significantly longer than for other manufacturing processes. In order to skip this bottleneck and shorten the production time in the product line, the initialization-free function of a dual-layer phase-change optical disk is attractive for the research and production of rewritable dual-layer phase-change optical disks. Our previous work (X.S. Miao et al, ODS'00, TuB3, 2000, and ISOM'01, Fr-K-05, 2001) demonstrated the initialization-free function for single-layer phase-change optical disks with GeSb2Te4 and Ge2Sb2+xTe5 phase-change recording media. In this study, the design, simulation, fabrication and characterization of the initialization-free dual-layer phase-change optical disk were carried out.

Abstract:Recently, we proposed the concept of superlattice-like (SLL) phase change optical disk and demonstrated excellent high-speed recording properties for disks adopting this SLL structure (T.C. Chong et al, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. vol. 39, p. 737, 2000, and J. Appl. Phys. vol. 91, 2002). This technology paves an alternative way to develop phase change materials for optical disks. On the other hand, with the development of DVD technology, DVD recording is being introduced in two different markets simultaneously, i.e., the DVD video recorder and the DVD writer for personal computer use. It is expected that the recording speed of rewritable DVD media should be like the rewritable CD, which is compatible with CD writers with different speeds. Therefore, it is necessary to develop rewritable DVD media to cover a broad range of recording speeds in order to make them compatible with different DVD recorders and drives. In this contribution, we present recent progress on the recording properties of the SLL disk at different recording speeds by tuning the stack structure, aiming to make the SLL disk multispeed compatible.

Abstract:The Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ and Sb additional layers were used as the additional layer of the initialization-free DVD-RAM optical storage disk. The initialization-free DVD-RAM disks were deposited by a Balzers Cube sputtering system. The results of the reflectivity, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), static properties and dynamic properties of disks have showed that the Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ film is better than the Sb film for the initialization-free GeSbTe DVD-RAM disk.

Abstract:Multilevel storage is the easiest two-dimensional storage technology. On the basis of recording and read-out optical system of Digital Versatile Disc (DVD), by the method of multilevel run-length coding, the storage capacity can be increased by 60 percent of DVD9's, reaching 14 Giga Bytes. In order to meet the requirement of a 10(-4) raw Bit Error Rate (BER) of data readout, this paper presents a method of multilevel run-length coding with changeable level numbers. This method can take advantage of run-length redundancy to the utmost and reduce Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) caused by multilevel run-length. Multilevel run-length coding uses the method of two steps modulation. This paper introduces a coding method of DK (1, 9) and R=1 code rate. Realized by Pulse Width Modulation, multilevel run-length modulation coding with changeable level has good symmetry. Its readout characteristics are the same as that of DVD with normal run-length modulation, therefore the servo control system needn't be changed. Also the signal can be recognized in two aspects respectively, run-length and level. In the sample disc, average raw BER in the two aspects is less than 10(-3). Multilevel run-length modulation coding could be applied in various systems of run-length modulation coding. On the basis of the structure and characteristics of the primitive system, the comprehensive efficiency of coding could be increased by 33 to 50 percent.

Abstract:Digital versatile disk-random access memory (DVD-RAM) with the Sb2Te3 additional layer demonstrated the initialization-free function. The results of the reflectivity, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) confirmed the initialization-free function. No significant decrease of the modulation amplitude after 1000 overwriting cycles was observed. A reduced time was required for complete erasure.

Abstract:A novel multi-dimensional (MD) optical storage was presented, which was realized by utilizing the space between tracks. Based on scalar diffraction theory, the channel bits parameters of the multi-dimensional optical storage were optimized, and the linear and nonlinear signals were analyzed accurately. Therefore, the format of the multi-dimensional optical disc was obtained, which makes the detection of readout signal easier. With respect to servo, coding and readout physics parameter of channel, the multi-dimensional optical disc is compatible with traditional disc such as Blu-ray disc (BD). Also, the novel multi-dimensional optical storage is able to achieve a doubled density and a ten-fold readout data rate compared with traditional optical discs.

Abstract:A dynamic model of mastering for multilevel run-length limited read-only disc is built, and corresponding experiments on DVD are done to validate it. Results show that this model consists with real mastering process. Using the model, a preliminary write strategy for 4-level run-length limited read-only disc is calculated out. The readout signals of the disc optimizing by write strategy are very close to desired.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a new simple structure of dual-layer rewritable phase-change optical discs. The disc consists of only three conventional materials for rewritable disc, a phase-change layer, dielectric layers and a reflective layer. Recording, erasing and overwriting in both recording mediums of the new disc structure are demonstrated and characterized. Both recording mediums can be rewritten using the conventional recording power defined by digital versatile disc (DVD) standard.

Abstract:An innovative multilevel read-only recording method is proposed. In this method, a short pit/land is deliberately inserted to the original land/pit. This modifies the wave-shape of readout signal. Taking the wave-shape as the symbol of level detection, a signal wave-shape modulation (SWSM) multilevel method is realized. This method is carried out and validated on the DVD read-only manufacture and readout system. A capacity of 15 GB can be expected, and a bit error rate of 10−4 is achieved. The capacity can meet the demand of high definition movie publication. This method also provides a potential multi-level solution for other storage formats and systems.

Abstract:When the techniques of integrating the variation of the pit depth and width simultaneously are adopted to conventional DVD, the high-density multilevel run-length limited read-only optical storage method is acheived. The dynamic range of readout signal is greatly enlarged in comparison with keeping one parameter varied, and the recording levels number can be obviously increased. The discs can be manufactured using standard photoresist mastering and replication techniques with great compatibility to conventional binary read-only discs. Experimental results show that eight-level read-only optical disc can be realized and the capacity can be increased to 20 GB.

Abstract:A new kind of multi-level recordable disc is presented in this paper. By improving the recording control signal in DVD-R/RW burning process, a Multi-level disc with signal waveform modulation can be achieved. The multi-level recording method increases the recording density but also the channel noise. The optimally designed partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) equalizer is effective in recovering channel symbol, and the original error rate reach 10E-4. This kind of multi-level method can be used for the purpose such as increasing the capacity of disc, hiding data and burning disc identification information etc.
