Abstract:MgAl 2 O 4 spinel particles exist inevitably in Al-Mg alloy melts and may act as potential substrates for heterogeneous nucleation of solid aluminum during solidification processing. In this paper, we investigated systematically the atomic ordering of liquid Al adjacent to liquid-Al/MgAl 2 O 4 {1 1 1} interfaces using an ab initio molecular dynamics simulation technique. Our simulations revealed that the interaction between the liquid metal and the spinel surface results in the formation of an ordered metal layer that terminates the substrate. This new terminating layer is positively charged, chemically bonded to the substrate, topologically rough, and structurally coupled with the metal sublayers beneath the outmost oxygen layer. The present results may shed new light on the role of spinel particles in Al-Mg alloys and on heterogeneous nucleation processes in general.

Abstract:Magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4) spinel has grasped considerable attention in high-temperature application by right of its excellent properties. However, the poor sintering behavior of MgAl2O4 is detrimental to its further development. In the present work, the application of isostructural heterogeneous nucleation method provides a novel idea for optimizing the sintering behavior of refractory materials. A series of (1-x)MgAl2O4-xMg2TiO4 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1) spinel solid solutions with a present ration of components were fabricated from light calcined magnesia, reactive alumina and pre-preparation Mg2TiO4. The effect of Mg2TiO4 heterogeneous nucleating agent on the crystalline phase, densification, and microstructure evolution of MgAl2O4–Mg2TiO4 spinel solid solutions was studied. The XRD, XPS, and EDS results showed that Mg2TiO4 entered the lattice of MgAl2O4 to form a spinel solid solution, and the heterovalent substitution process was identified, where Ti4+ and Mg2+ ions of larger radius in the Mg2TiO4 replaced the Al3+ of smaller radius in the MgAl2O4. For the sample at x = 0.08, the spinel solid solutions exhibited the optimized densification with a relative density of 93.3%, an apparent porosity of 1.2%, and a compressive strength of 84.5 MPa. A significant increase in densification was related to the lattice distortion induced by ion size mismatch during the heterovalent substitution, thus accelerating the diffusion rate of Mg2+ and Al3+ ions in the spinelisation state. Moreover, the solid solubility content of Ti4+ in the MgAl2O4–Mg2TiO4 spinel solid solutions had a significant effect on the grain morphologies. The Mg2TiO4 heterogeneous nucleating agent significantly increased the spinelisation rate of MgAl2O4 spinel with negligible effect on densification.

Crystal Nucleation in Al-Ni Alloys: an Unsupervised Chemical and Topological Learning Approach

Abstract:Crystallization represents a fundamental process engendering solidification of a material and determines its microstructure. Driven by complex phenomena at the atomic scale, its understanding for alloys still remains elusive. The present work proposes a large scale molecular dynamics simulation study of the homogeneous crystal nucleation pathways of prototypical undercooled Al-Ni binary alloys. An unsupervised topological learning analysis shows that the nucleation sets in first from a chemical ordering, followed by a bond-orientational ordering of the underlying crystal phase. Our results indicate also a different polymorph selection that depends on composition. While the nucleation pathway of Al50 Ni50 displays a single step with the emergence of B2 short-range order, a step-wise nucleation toward the L12 phase is seen for Al25 Ni75 . The influence of the nucleation of pure Al and Ni counterparts is further discussed.

Microstructural analysis by molecular dynamics simulation of aluminate ternary slag with alkaline oxide

Abstract:The influence mechanism of Na2O, K2O, MgO, and BaO on the microstructural characteristics of aluminate-based ternary melts was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation to guide performance adjustments. When the MxO mass fraction was 4 wt%, compared with alkaline earth metal oxides, adding alkaline metal oxides can stabilize the Al-O bond and Al-O coordination better. The sequence of Mx+ close to the [AlO4]5− tetrahedron was Mg2+<ca2+<ba2+<na+<K+, and M+ primarily compensates for the [AlO4]5- tetrahedron charge, while more AlV was formed in two-valence alkaline aluminate to balance the excess negative charge. As the MxO mass concentration increased, in the K2O-Al2O3-CaO, Na2O-Al2O3-CaO, and BaO-Al2O3-CaO systems, the Mx+ replaced Ca2+ in the [AlO4]5− tetrahedron and approached Ot to balance the excess negative charge, while in the MgO-Al2O3-CaO system, Mg2+ replaced Ca2+ in Onb and approached Ot to form non-bridging Al-O-Mg. Combined with the synergistic effect of Mx+, AlV, and Ot, the melt structure complexity followed the trend of MgO-Al2O3-CaO<na2O-Al2O3-CaO<k2O-Al2O3-CaO<bao-al2O3-CaO with a certain mass fraction of MxO.</bao-al</k</na</na</ba</ca

Abstract:Mg-Al spinel (MgAl2O4) nanorods and nanoplatelets transformed from Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (Mg-Al-LDHs) were synthesized via a combined hydrothermal method and calcination route using Al(NO3).9H2O and Mg(NO3)2.6H2O as raw materials. The nanorods and nanoplatelets were characterized by means of physical techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microcopy (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), thermogravimetric (TG), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. XRD patterns reveal that the Mg-Al-LDHs nanostructures were obtained under a hydrothermal reaction temperature of 200 degrees C and Mg-Al spinel nanostructures were fabricated via calcination of the Mg-Al-LDHs nanostructures at 750 degrees C. It can be seen from TEM that the sizes of the Mg-Al-LDHs nanoplatelets were about 20-40 nm and the diameters of the MgAl2O4 nanorods were ca. 6 nm. The HRTEM images indicate that the crystal lattice spaces of the MgAl2O4 nanorods and nanoplatelets are 0.282 and 0.287 nm, respectively.
Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis of Magnesium Aluminate Spinel Using Mg–Al Alloy

Abstract:In this study, magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAlO) was synthesized by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method using Mg-Al alloy with a Mg/Al mass ratio of 50:50 as raw material. Synthesized MgAlO was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry techniques. The results show that synthesized products are of high purity and excellent crystallinity. However, the particle size is not uniform and there is obvious agglomeration. The crystallite size of spinel phase is calculated to be 37.78 nm. In the UV band, the synthesized MgAlO has a certain absorption capacity, and the extrapolated band gap is 4.02 eV. The synthesis mechanism was studied, and continued rupture and growth of the oxidation layer is thought to be responsible for grain refinement.

Abstract:In this paper, by simulating the gas phase conditions inside the MgO–Al2O3–C refractories during continuous casting process and combining with thermodynamic analysis, as well as SEM analysis, the gas-gas and gas-solid formation of MA spinel were clarified in carbon containing refractories. Thermodynamic calculations showed that gas partial pressure of CO, O2 and Mg could meet the formation and stable existence conditions of MA spinel in MgO–Al2O3–C refractories under service environment, and nitrogen could not affect the formation of MA spinel at 1550 °C in the thermodynamic condition. The formation processes of MA spinel were analyzed experimentally under embedding carbon atmosphere. The carbon-coated alumina powders in MgO–Al2O3–C refractories prevented the direct contact between magnesia and alumina. Mg gas was formed by carbon thermal reaction, then reacted with alumina (gas-solid) and gas containing aluminum (gas-gas) to generate MA spinel. Through gas-gas or gas-solid reaction, the formation of MA spinel was effectively controlled. By means of SEM analysis, a two-layer structure with dense outer spinel layer and loose inner layer was formed in MgO–Al2O3–C refractories.

Abstract:Magnesia (MgO) particles inevitably exist in liquid Mg and may be used as potential sites for heterogeneous nucleation to achieve effective grain refinement. Understanding of the atomic configurations on MgO surfaces and in the liquid Mg adjacent to the liquid Mg/MgO interfaces is therefore of both scientific and practical interests. We investigate the surface structures of MgO in liquid Mg and the atomic arrangements of liquid Mg adjacent to liquid/substrate interfaces, using an ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulation technique. We find that an atomically rough terminating Mg layer forms on the {1 1 1} terminated MgO substrate (octahedral MgO) in liquid Mg. The simulations also reveal that on the structurally flat {0 0 1} terminated MgO substrate (cubic MgO) a rough Mg layer forms due to the unique chemical interactions between the ions on the substrate and the liquid metals. The surface roughness together with the large lattice misfits with solid Mg makes both octahedral and cubic MgO substrates impotent for heterogeneous nucleation of α-Mg. The present results may shed new light on grain refinement of Mg-alloys.
Influence of Fe on the Formation of Nucleation in Carbon-Inoculated Mg-3%Al Alloy

Abstract:The Mg-3% Al melt was treated by carbon inoculation and Fe addition. The influence of Fe on the formation of nucleation was investigated. That Fe inhibited the grain refinement of the carbon-inoculated Mg-3%Al alloy or not was closely associated with the operating sequence of carbon inoculation and Fe addition. Under the condition of Fe addition firstly and then carbon inoculation, the Al4C3particles and the particles with duplex phase structure of Al4C3coated on Al-C-Fe or Al-Fe could be observed. Both kinds of particles should act as nucleating substrates for a-Mg grains, resulting in no obvious effect of Fe on refining efficiency of carbon inoculation. Under the contrary condition, the potency of Al4C3nucleating substrates was poisoned by transforming Al4C3into Al-C-Fe-rich intermetallic particles, resulting in grain-coarsening.

Abstract:Fine and dispersed Mg-Ti-oxide inclusions, which act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for intragranular ferrite, have been acknowledged as an effective method for grain refinement. In this paper, the nucleation and growth mechanisms of ferrite on Mg-Ti-oxides surface were investigated through first-principles calculations and solid-state pressure bonding experiments. The calculated results show that the formation of cation vacancies is the limiting step for Mn solute atom absorption by Mg-Ti-oxides. As determined by the lower covalency and ionicity of the Mg-O bond compared to the Ti-O bond in Mg-Ti-oxides, Mn atoms will be efficiently absorbed by occupying the Mg vacancies. The experimental results demonstrate that MgTiO 3 with the maximum Mn-depleted zone (MDZ) width is the most effective for ferrite nucleation, which is consistent with the calculation results. As a representative, the Fe(110)/MgTiO 3 (001) interface with the lowest planar disregistry (3.16%) was selected to analyze growth behaviors. Due to charge accumulation and variation, Fe atoms are more likely to gather on the Mg-O terminal MgTiO 3 (001) surface and form [(Mg-O)-Fe]-1 interfaces. Its adhesion work and interface energy are 1.74 and 2.46 J/m 2 , respectively. The present study illustrates the nucleation and growth mechanisms of ferrite on Mg-Ti-oxides, providing theoretical support for the application of Mg-Ti-oxide inclusions in oxide metallurgy.

Abstract:A solvothermal route is adopted to produce mesoporous α-Fe(2)O(3) nanospheres by using polyethylene glycol as soft template and n-butanol/H(2)O as mixed solvent. The mesoporous α-Fe(2)O(3) nanospheres are subjected to calcination at different temperatures, and the specific surface area, pore size, and magnetic properties of the as-prepared nanospheres are investigated. The studies reveal that the pore sizes of the mesoporous α-Fe(2)O(3) nanospheres increase with higher calcination temperature, and high-temperature calcination brings about tightness of the pore wall. Magnetic studies show that aggregation of the small particles raises the Morin transition temperature.

Abstract:Significance Nucleation is ubiquitous in many natural and industrial processes, yet our understanding of how a nucleus first emerges is limited. According to classical nucleation theory, a nucleus from which crystals grow forms in a single, spontaneous step. In this work, we combine ultralow-dose in situ liquid-phase and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy to show that metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) nucleate through a different, nonclassical pathway with three distinct steps. These steps are phase separation, condensation, and crystallization. Our observations of intermediate steps during the crystallization of MOFs provide important insight for controlling the nucleation and growth of both crystalline and amorphous materials.

Abstract:The physicochemical properties of ZnO are always determined by its chemical composition and physical form. Here we showed a new type of Mg-alloyed ZnO nanostructures by using templating method. Depending on the molar ratio of ordinary metal salts in the reagents, the Mg contents in Zn1−xMgxO alloyed nanostructures could be controlled precisely with the tunable optoelectronic properties and reached to a maximum value as high as 48%. We found that the Mg contents in the Zn1−xMgxO alloyed nanostructures were evolutive in annealing process and it illustrated that the concentrations of Mg in Zn1−xMgxO had a fixed maximum value after annealing at a corresponding temperature. Moreover, we found the precipitation of MgO in Zn1−xMgxO nanostructures was in specific crystal planes. We demonstrated that this new findings of their crystal growth characteristics can be helpful to understand the alloyed ZnO nanostructures deeply.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous ZnAl2O4 spinel monolith derived from ionic precursors has been successfully prepared via the sol-gel route accompanied by phase separation in the presence of poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and propylene oxide (PO). Appropriate amounts of PEO as a phase-separation inducer and PO as a gelation mediator allow the formation of the xerogel with bicontinuous macrostructure and a monolithic shape. The macropore size of the resultant dried gel is mainly distributed in the range of 0.2-1 mu m, and the whole porosity is about 65%. The dried gel is constructed by crystalline Zn-Al hydrotalcite, becoming amorphous after heat-treated at 300-500 degrees C in air, and is further transformed into single phase ZnAl2O4 spinel with plate-like shape at 600 degrees C. The macroporous structure is well maintained while the porosity increases to 75% and the surface area rises to 109 m(2) g(-1) after heat-treatment. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Mg2+ Diffusion-Induced Structural and Property Evolution in Epitaxial Fe3O4 Thin Films.

Abstract:Epitaxial Fe3O4 thin films grown on single crystal MgO(001) present well-defined model systems to study fundamental multivalent ion diffusion and associated phase transition processes in transition-metal-oxide-based cathodes. In this work, we show at an atomic scale the Mg2+ diffusion pathways, kinetics, and reaction products at the Fe3O4/MgO heterostructures under different oxygen partial pressures but with the same thermal annealing conditions. Combining microscopic, optical, and spectroscopic techniques, we demonstrate that an oxygen-rich environment promotes facile Mg2+ incorporation into the Fe2+ sites, leading to the formation of Mg1-xFe2+xO4 spinel structures, where the corresponding portion of the Fe2+ ions are oxidized to Fe3+. Conversely, annealing in vacuum results in the formation of a thin interfacial rocksalt layer (Mg1-yFeyO), which serves as a blocking layer leading to significantly reduced Mg2+ diffusion to the bulk Fe3O4. The observed changes in transport and optical properties as a result of Mg diffusion are interpreted in light of the electronic structures determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our results reveal the critical role of available anions in governing cation diffusion in the spinel structures and the need to prevent formation of unwanted reaction intermediates for the promotion of facile cation diffusion.
In situ formation mechanism of spinel-like Al5O6N and plate-like Al7O3N5 in the two-step sintered Al–Al2O3 composites

Abstract:A designed two-step sintering was implemented in the resin bonded Al–Al2O3 composites under nitrogen to get active AlN precursor, in which the sample was firstly heated at 580 °C for 8 h then at 1700 °C for 3 h. The introduction of active AlN precursor promoted the synthesis of reinforcements. XRD and SEM were employed to investigate the two-step sintered Al–Al2O3 composites. In addition to the preferentially formed Al2OC-AlN solid solution, plate-like Al7O3N5 and spinel-like Al5O6N were generated. Due to the higher content of active AlN from the nitridation of Al, Al7O3N5 nucleus was synthesized from solid-state reaction. Then, plate-like Al7O3N5 was obtained from liquid phase reaction and gas phase reaction. In the meanwhile, the AlN with lower content from carbothermal nitridation of Al2O3 reacted with Al2O3 to Al5O6N. In addition, gas phase reaction also contributed to the formation of spinel-like Al5O6N. And the reaction models were established in this paper.

Abstract:The Al–Al2O3–MgO composites with added aluminum contents of approximately 0wt%, 5wt%, and 10wt%, named as M1, M2, and M3, respectively, were prepared at 1700°C for 5 h under a flowing N2 atmosphere using the reaction sintering method. After sintering, the Al–Al2O3–MgO composites were characterized and analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results show that specimen M1 was composed of MgO and MgAl2O4. Compared with specimen M1, specimens M2 and M3 possessed MgAlON, and its production increased with increasing aluminum addition. Under an N2 atmosphere, MgO, Al2O3, and Al in the matrix of specimens M2 and M3 reacted to form MgAlON and AlN-polytypoids, which combined the particles and the matrix together and imparted the Al–Al2O3–MgO composites with a dense structure. Under an N2 atmosphere, the partial pressure of oxygen is quite low; thus, when the Al–Al2O3–MgO composites were soaked at 580°C for an extended period, aluminum metal was transformed into AlN. With increasing temperature, Al2O3 diffused into AlN crystal lattices and formed AlN-polytypoids; however, MgO reacted with Al2O3 to form MgAl2O4. When the temperature was greater than (1640 ± 10)°C, AlN diffused into Al2O3 and formed spinel-structured AlON. In situ MgAlON was acquired through a solid-solution reaction between AlON and MgAl2O4 at high temperatures because of their similar spinel structures.
