Crystal Nucleation in Al-Ni Alloys: an Unsupervised Chemical and Topological Learning Approach

Abstract:Crystallization represents a fundamental process engendering solidification of a material and determines its microstructure. Driven by complex phenomena at the atomic scale, its understanding for alloys still remains elusive. The present work proposes a large scale molecular dynamics simulation study of the homogeneous crystal nucleation pathways of prototypical undercooled Al-Ni binary alloys. An unsupervised topological learning analysis shows that the nucleation sets in first from a chemical ordering, followed by a bond-orientational ordering of the underlying crystal phase. Our results indicate also a different polymorph selection that depends on composition. While the nucleation pathway of Al50 Ni50 displays a single step with the emergence of B2 short-range order, a step-wise nucleation toward the L12 phase is seen for Al25 Ni75 . The influence of the nucleation of pure Al and Ni counterparts is further discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Products of Al-deoxidation reaction in iron melt are the most common inclusions and play an important effect on steel performance. Understanding the thermodynamics on nano-alumina (or nano-hercynite) is very critical to explore the relationship between Al-deoxidation reaction and products growth in iron melt. In present study, a thermodynamic modeling of nano-alumina inclusions in Fe–O–Al melt has been developed. The thermodynamic results show that the Gibbs free energy changes for the formation of nano-Al 2 O 3 and nano-FeAl 2 O 4 decrease with the increasing size and increase with the increasing temperature. The Gibbs free energy changes for transformation of nano-Al 2 O 3 into bulk-Al 2 O 3 increase with the increasing size and temperature. The thermodynamic curve of nano-alumina (or nano-hercynite) and the equilibrium curve of bulk-alumina (or bulk-hercynite) obtained in this work are agree with the published experimental data of Al-deoxidation equilibria in liquid iron. In addition, the thermodynamic coexisting points about Al 2 O 3 and FeAl 2 O 4 in liquid iron are in a straight line and coincide with the various previous data. It suggested that these scattered experimental data maybe in the different thermodynamic state of Al-deoxidized liquid iron and the reaction products for most of the previous Al-deoxidation experiments are nano-alumina (or nano-hercynite).

Abstract:Nanocrystalline materials have wide potential applications due to the special properties, which can be easily prepared by nanocrystallization of the amorphous alloys. In this work, phase transformations of the melt-spun amorphous Mg60Ni30La10 alloy were characterized by in-situ XRD and TEM. The results showed that during crystallization Mg2Ni first formed from the amorphous matrix followed by LaMg3, LaMg2Ni and LaMgNi4. The phase transformation was completed rapidly, with nucleation progressing more prominently than grain growth. Nucleation and grain growth during crystallization were discussed according to Avrami index n(α) based on Kissinger equation. In addition, the classic Miedema theory was introduced to estimate the crystallization temperature and the nucleation frequency. Nucleation behaviors are closely related to the phase structures formed during the amorphous crystallization from the view of thermodynamics. This work provided a preliminary basis for controlling the evolution of amorphous/nanocrystalline structure of alloys.

Abstract:The experiments of Al‐deoxidized steel coupling with Mg treatment under three cooling rate are conducted to investigate the size and morphology of MgAl2O4. The formation mechanism of MgAl2O4 in steel is discussed by thermodynamic and kinetic methods, and four morphological transformation paths of MgAl2O4 are found. The experiment of Al‐deoxidized steel coupling with Mg treatment is conducted under three cooling methods to observe the size and morphology of MgAl2O4. Most of MgAl2O4 in the water‐cooled steel are sphere or ellipsoid‐like shape, in the furnace‐cooled steel are cubic or octahedral‐like shape, and in the air‐cooled steel are irregular shape. The quantity of inclusions in the size of 1–3 μm increases with the increasing cooling rate, whereas the quantity of the other size decreases with the increasing cooling rate. The result shows that the changing of cooling methods has little effect on the critical size and the nucleation rate of MgAl2O4. The growth of MgAl2O4 is effected by diffusion, Ostwald, and collision growth, and the increasing cooling rate leads to the decreasing growth time. The size of MgAl2O4 is decided by the diffusion of Mg and the growth time of MgAl2O4. Four possible morphological transformation paths of MgAl2O4 in steel are found, and the shape of MgAl2O4 can evolve from sphere or ellipsoid to octahedron via truncated octahedron or cubic‐like shape. The final morphology of MgAl2O4 is controlled by the transformation path which has a close relationship with the cooling rate.

Abstract:The ladle furnace refining process (before LF, add Ti, add Al, add Mg, add Ca) of oxide metallurgical steel was sampled, and the effect of complex oxide inclusions generated after LF refining on acicular ferrite (AF) nucleation were studied by SEM, TEM, TKD and EBSD. The results show that the complex oxide inclusions after LF refining are composed of MgAl 2 O 4 , CaTiO 3 , TiO 2 , TiN, and MnS. Among them, MgAl 2 O 4 , CaTiO 3 , TiO 2 and TiN have NW orientation relationship with adjacent AF laths. There are Mn depletion zone(MDZ) with a width of about 200 nm outside MgAl 2 O 4 , CaTiO 3 , TiO 2 and MnS. Some AF laths can be nucleated by different inclusions under the combined action of MDZ mechanism and lattice mismatch mechanism. The first principle calculations show that MgAl 2 O 4 , CaTiO 3 and TiO 2 all have cation vacancies, and the diffusion of Mn ions into cation vacancies has thermodynamic advantages. The formation of MDZs is the combined effect of MnS precipitation on oxidized inclusions and Mn ions occupying cation vacancies in inclusions.

Atomic Ordering at the Liquid-Al/MgAl 2 O 4 Interfaces from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:MgAl 2 O 4 spinel particles exist inevitably in Al-Mg alloy melts and may act as potential substrates for heterogeneous nucleation of solid aluminum during solidification processing. In this paper, we investigated systematically the atomic ordering of liquid Al adjacent to liquid-Al/MgAl 2 O 4 {1 1 1} interfaces using an ab initio molecular dynamics simulation technique. Our simulations revealed that the interaction between the liquid metal and the spinel surface results in the formation of an ordered metal layer that terminates the substrate. This new terminating layer is positively charged, chemically bonded to the substrate, topologically rough, and structurally coupled with the metal sublayers beneath the outmost oxygen layer. The present results may shed new light on the role of spinel particles in Al-Mg alloys and on heterogeneous nucleation processes in general.
The Formation Mechanism of Oxide Inclusions in a High-Aluminum Ni-Based Superalloy during the Vacuum Induction Remelting Process

Abstract:Oxide inclusions in Ni-based superalloys play a crucial role in determining their mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. In this paper, the source and formation mechanism of different types of oxide inclusions in a high-aluminum Ni-based superalloy were systematically studied. An automatic field emission scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer and a self-designed superalloy inclusion analysis standard was utilized to quantitatively reveal the oxide inclusion characteristics of the high-aluminum Ni-based superalloy prepared via vacuum induction melting (VIM) and vacuum induction remelting (VIR) processes. The experimental results indicate that the typical oxide inclusions in the Ni-based superalloy before the VIR process are irregular MgO·Al2O3 inclusions with sizes of less than 2 μm. After the VIR process, the typical oxide inclusions in the Ni-based superalloy are also MgO·Al2O3 inclusions. However, these oxide inclusions can be classified into three categories: (i) endogenous irregular MgO·Al2O3 inclusions, less than 4.3 μm in size, inherited from the master alloy; (ii) several hundred-micron film-like MgO·Al2O3 inclusions generated as interface reaction products between the MgO crucible and melts; and (iii) millimeter-scale MgO·Al2O3 inclusions and several tens of microns of MgO inclusions from the exfoliation of the MgO crucible matrix.

Abstract:Complex oxide–carbonitrides (MgO-Ti(CN), Al2O3-Ti(CN), and MgO·Al2O3-Ti(CN)) are the most common non-metallic inclusions presented in cast and wrought superalloys. In this work, a coupled kinetics model was proposed to predict the complex oxide–carbonitride inclusion's precipitation behavior during the solidification of superalloys. This model takes into account thermodynamics, micro-segregation, heterogeneous nucleation in the inter-dendritic liquid, and growth controlled by the diffusion of solute elements and kinetics of interfacial reaction. The results demonstrated that both the cooling rate and nitrogen content take significant effects on the final size of complex oxide–carbonitride inclusions, as the former controls the total growth time and the latter determines the initial precipitation temperature. In comparison, the particle size of primary oxides shows a negligible impact on the final size of complex inclusions. The practice of an industrial vacuum arc remelting confirmed that the inclusion size variation predicted by the present model is reasonably consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:Fine and dispersed Mg-Ti-oxide inclusions, which act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for intragranular ferrite, have been acknowledged as an effective method for grain refinement. In this paper, the nucleation and growth mechanisms of ferrite on Mg-Ti-oxides surface were investigated through first-principles calculations and solid-state pressure bonding experiments. The calculated results show that the formation of cation vacancies is the limiting step for Mn solute atom absorption by Mg-Ti-oxides. As determined by the lower covalency and ionicity of the Mg-O bond compared to the Ti-O bond in Mg-Ti-oxides, Mn atoms will be efficiently absorbed by occupying the Mg vacancies. The experimental results demonstrate that MgTiO 3 with the maximum Mn-depleted zone (MDZ) width is the most effective for ferrite nucleation, which is consistent with the calculation results. As a representative, the Fe(110)/MgTiO 3 (001) interface with the lowest planar disregistry (3.16%) was selected to analyze growth behaviors. Due to charge accumulation and variation, Fe atoms are more likely to gather on the Mg-O terminal MgTiO 3 (001) surface and form [(Mg-O)-Fe]-1 interfaces. Its adhesion work and interface energy are 1.74 and 2.46 J/m 2 , respectively. The present study illustrates the nucleation and growth mechanisms of ferrite on Mg-Ti-oxides, providing theoretical support for the application of Mg-Ti-oxide inclusions in oxide metallurgy.

Abstract:It is challenging to assess the mechanism responsible for the nucleation of inclusions in metals at high temperatures. The present work therefore systematically investigates the nucleation of cerium oxide inclusions according to classical nucleation theory and a two-step nucleation mechanism. The nucleation rates and nucleation radii of these inclusions are obtained, and the results demonstrate a considerable difference between theoretical and experimental values. On the basis of a two-step nucleation mechanism, (CeO2) n and (Ce2O3) n (n = 1–6) clusters were constructed and the thermodynamic properties of both these clusters and of cerium oxide nanoparticles were analyzed. In addition, the entropies and heat capacity changes of cerium oxides were determined using first principles calculations and are found to be consistent with literature data. The present data indicate that the cerium oxide inclusion nucleation pathway can be summarized as [Ce] + [O] → (CeO2) n /(Ce2O3) n → (Ce2O3) n → (Ce2O3)2 → core(Ce2O3 crystal)–shell((Ce2O3)2 cluster) nanoparticles → (Ce2O3)bulk.

Abstract:Clarifying the crystallization path, from the thermodynamic point of view, is of importance for the structure and properties of metallic glasses (MGs). The influence of oxygen on the crystallization pathway of Ni65Zr35 MG was investigated by in-situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As temperature increases, crystalline Ni7Zr2 and t-ZrO2 phases are formed first rather than the Ni10Zr7 and Ni21Zr8 phases, which are the main crystallization products following the phase diagram. Oxygen changes the crystallization pathway by varying the Ni/Zr ratio, indicating that the effects of oxygen on the crystallization in nanometer-sized MG cannot be neglected even in high vacuum TEMs.

Abstract:Magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4) spinel has grasped considerable attention in high-temperature application by right of its excellent properties. However, the poor sintering behavior of MgAl2O4 is detrimental to its further development. In the present work, the application of isostructural heterogeneous nucleation method provides a novel idea for optimizing the sintering behavior of refractory materials. A series of (1-x)MgAl2O4-xMg2TiO4 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1) spinel solid solutions with a present ration of components were fabricated from light calcined magnesia, reactive alumina and pre-preparation Mg2TiO4. The effect of Mg2TiO4 heterogeneous nucleating agent on the crystalline phase, densification, and microstructure evolution of MgAl2O4–Mg2TiO4 spinel solid solutions was studied. The XRD, XPS, and EDS results showed that Mg2TiO4 entered the lattice of MgAl2O4 to form a spinel solid solution, and the heterovalent substitution process was identified, where Ti4+ and Mg2+ ions of larger radius in the Mg2TiO4 replaced the Al3+ of smaller radius in the MgAl2O4. For the sample at x = 0.08, the spinel solid solutions exhibited the optimized densification with a relative density of 93.3%, an apparent porosity of 1.2%, and a compressive strength of 84.5 MPa. A significant increase in densification was related to the lattice distortion induced by ion size mismatch during the heterovalent substitution, thus accelerating the diffusion rate of Mg2+ and Al3+ ions in the spinelisation state. Moreover, the solid solubility content of Ti4+ in the MgAl2O4–Mg2TiO4 spinel solid solutions had a significant effect on the grain morphologies. The Mg2TiO4 heterogeneous nucleating agent significantly increased the spinelisation rate of MgAl2O4 spinel with negligible effect on densification.

Abstract:Acting as substrates for heterogeneous nucleation, native oxides in Al–Mg alloys have shown their potential for grain refinement. However, the limited knowledge about the nature of the oxides in Al–Mg alloys impedes the widespread application as native grain refiners. The aim of this work is to comprehensively investigate the native oxides in Al–Mg alloys through electron microscopy. Our results show that the predominant inclusions in Al–Mg alloys are oxides in three types of oxide films at the micrometer scales: young films, old films and oxide skins. All oxide films consist of discrete oxide particles of three types in nanometer scale depending on the Mg contents: γAl 2 O 3 (< 0.4 wt.%), MgAl 2 O 4 (0.08–3.5 wt.%) and MgO (> 2 wt.%). Specifically, MgAl 2 O 4 particles have sizes ranging from a few tens to a few hundreds nanometer and possess an elementary shape of octahedron faceted by {111} planes. In Al–Mg alloys, the native oxides have a lognormal size distribution, with the average mean size fluctuating in accordance with the oxide configurations as Mg content varies. The agglomerating feature causes inhomogeneous sampling, and dual-peak lognormal curves are found for low-Mg-content alloys (0.08/0.4%), which could be eliminated by increasing the Mg content (2.0/3.5%) or by using the high-shear melt conditioning (HSMC) technology. Understanding the native oxides in Al–Mg alloys shall provide instructions on their application in grain refinement.

Abstract:The physicochemical properties of ZnO are always determined by its chemical composition and physical form. Here we showed a new type of Mg-alloyed ZnO nanostructures by using templating method. Depending on the molar ratio of ordinary metal salts in the reagents, the Mg contents in Zn1−xMgxO alloyed nanostructures could be controlled precisely with the tunable optoelectronic properties and reached to a maximum value as high as 48%. We found that the Mg contents in the Zn1−xMgxO alloyed nanostructures were evolutive in annealing process and it illustrated that the concentrations of Mg in Zn1−xMgxO had a fixed maximum value after annealing at a corresponding temperature. Moreover, we found the precipitation of MgO in Zn1−xMgxO nanostructures was in specific crystal planes. We demonstrated that this new findings of their crystal growth characteristics can be helpful to understand the alloyed ZnO nanostructures deeply.
Thermodynamic calculation and microstructure characterization of spinel formation in MgO–Al2O3–C refractories

Abstract:In this paper, by simulating the gas phase conditions inside the MgO–Al2O3–C refractories during continuous casting process and combining with thermodynamic analysis, as well as SEM analysis, the gas-gas and gas-solid formation of MA spinel were clarified in carbon containing refractories. Thermodynamic calculations showed that gas partial pressure of CO, O2 and Mg could meet the formation and stable existence conditions of MA spinel in MgO–Al2O3–C refractories under service environment, and nitrogen could not affect the formation of MA spinel at 1550 °C in the thermodynamic condition. The formation processes of MA spinel were analyzed experimentally under embedding carbon atmosphere. The carbon-coated alumina powders in MgO–Al2O3–C refractories prevented the direct contact between magnesia and alumina. Mg gas was formed by carbon thermal reaction, then reacted with alumina (gas-solid) and gas containing aluminum (gas-gas) to generate MA spinel. Through gas-gas or gas-solid reaction, the formation of MA spinel was effectively controlled. By means of SEM analysis, a two-layer structure with dense outer spinel layer and loose inner layer was formed in MgO–Al2O3–C refractories.

Abstract:Targeted doping of grain boundaries has been widely pursued as a pathway for combating thermal instabilities in nanocrystalline metals. However, certain dopants predicted to produce grain boundary segregated nanocrystalline configurations instead form small nanoprecipitates at elevated temperatures that act to kinetically inhibit grain growth. In this study, thermodynamic modeling is implemented to select the Mo‐Au system for exploring the interplay between thermodynamic and kinetic contributions to nanostructure stability. Using nanoscale multilayers and in situ transmission electron microscopy thermal aging, evolving segregation states and corresponding phase transitions are mapped with temperature. The microstructure is shown to evolve through a transformation at lower homologous temperatures (< 600°C) where solute atoms cluster and segregate to the grain boundaries, consistent with predictions from thermodynamic models. An increase in temperature to 800°C is accompanied by coarsening of the grain structure via grain boundary migration but with multiple pinning events uncovered between migrating segments of the grain boundary and local solute clustering. Direct comparison between the thermodynamic predictions and experimental observations of microstructure evolution thus demonstrates a transition from thermodynamically preferred to kinetically inhibited nanocrystalline stability and provides a general framework for decoupling contributions to complex stability transitions while simultaneously targeting a dominant thermal stability regime. Atomistic Nucleation Mechanism of Titanium Oxides in Steel Based on Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Modes

Abstract:Inclusions of TixOy and Al2O3–TixOy have often been reported in previous studies and were also observed in our present experiment. To understand the formation mechanism of TixOy inclusions in molten steel at atomic scale by homogeneous and heterogeneous modes, the DFT method was used to calculate the structures and thermodynamic properties of pre-nucleation metastable phases ((TixOy)n clusters) of TixOy inclusions and the interface properties between Al2O3 planes and (TixOy)1 clusters. By comparing the equilibrium curve of (TixOy)n clusters with the equilibrium experimental data between dissolved Ti and O in iron melt, it was found that the formation of TixOy inclusions in iron melt is a two-step process and the nanoscale (TixOy)n clusters have difficulty growing into the final bulk TixOy at a low supersaturation ratio of [Ti] and [O] in melt. The Ti-deoxidation product in the previous equilibrium experiments should be not only bulk TixOy but also (TixOy)n clusters. Comparing the homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of TixOy inclusions showed that the critical supersaturation ratio required for forming (TixOy)n clusters in heterogeneous mode is smaller than that in homogeneous mode, while the transformation force of (TixOy)n clusters into TixOy crystal in heterogeneous mode is the same as that in homogeneous mode. This work is helpful to investigate the nucleation and growth mechanism of TixOy inclusions in steel melt and provide a theoretical basis for the design of steel materials.
Influence of Fe on the Formation of Nucleation in Carbon-Inoculated Mg-3%Al Alloy

Abstract:The Mg-3% Al melt was treated by carbon inoculation and Fe addition. The influence of Fe on the formation of nucleation was investigated. That Fe inhibited the grain refinement of the carbon-inoculated Mg-3%Al alloy or not was closely associated with the operating sequence of carbon inoculation and Fe addition. Under the condition of Fe addition firstly and then carbon inoculation, the Al4C3particles and the particles with duplex phase structure of Al4C3coated on Al-C-Fe or Al-Fe could be observed. Both kinds of particles should act as nucleating substrates for a-Mg grains, resulting in no obvious effect of Fe on refining efficiency of carbon inoculation. Under the contrary condition, the potency of Al4C3nucleating substrates was poisoned by transforming Al4C3into Al-C-Fe-rich intermetallic particles, resulting in grain-coarsening.
Effect of nanoclusters formed by metal impurity on magnesium vapor condensation in silicothermic process: A molecular dynamics study

Abstract:In the silicothermic process, some metal oxide impurities that coexist with dolomite are inevitably reduced to metal vapors which condense to metal impurities in the magnesium crystallizer. In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to investigate the effect of impurity clusters on crystallization transition of undercooled magnesium vapor. The results showed that saturated vapor atoms tend to nucleate on the pre-existing impurity cluster, which promoted the crystallization rate of magnesium vapor. Moreover, the promoting effect depends on the species and size of impurity clusters, in the three impurities studied in this paper, magnesium vapor condenses on the Fe cluster at the fastest rate due to the bcc structure and the strong interaction between Fe and Mg atoms. The Ni cluster has a more significant promoting effect on crystallization for the Ni and Cu clusters with the same fcc structure because of a larger energy parameter.
