Abstract:Subwavelength-confined hybrid surface modes of low attenuation were found in a cylindrical waveguide with a high-permittivity-dielectric nanocore nested in a metallic nanotube. When phase-matching conditions are met, mode transfer occurs, which is associated with a strong anti-crossing behavior. At the transfer radius, a hybrid mode with superior properties, namely low propagation attenuation and high light confinement, transforms into the other that has inferior properties. Thus, the superior mode with subwavelength confinement can be efficiently excited through this mode-transfer process when we taper the nested nanocore. This nanoscale cylindrical metallic-dielectric waveguide may have applications in high-density integrated photonic circuits, plasmonic sources, and biosensing techniques. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

Abstract:Intersected slot waveguide is proposed to strongly confine TE and TM modes simultaneously. Confinement factors as wells as single-mode condition are given for fully symmetrical a-Si/SiO2/SOI intersected slot waveguide and the SiNx-covered case @ 1.55 mum. A pertinent polarization- independent device can be realized by size tuning, or by employing the analyzed polarization converter to alternatively treat the polarized modes. The conversion efficiency is also investigated in size dependence by mode matching method.

Abstract:The advent of slot waveguide structure has led the field of nano-photonics into an era, where maximum light can be confined inside low index slot guarded by high index slabs. Already in use slot waveguides (contrast ratio is 2.42) have two distinct properties over the conventional waveguides, i.e. high E-field amplitude, optical power, optical intensity in low index materials and a strong E-field confinement is localized to nanometer-size low index regions. We hereby propose a low contrast double slot waveguide structure (contrast ratio is 1.65); where low index slots comprising of air surrounded with high index glass slabs. The whole structure is based on substrate comprising of glass whereas cladding is of air. Novelty lies in showing high E-field amplitude, optical power, optical intensity and a strong E-field confinement in low index slot regions. Low contrast double slot structure usage in forming passive nano-devices had been verified by simulating a Y-branch coupler. ©2008 IEEE.

Abstract:We present a highly efficient optical field concentrator that is capable of confining optical field in nanometer-thin low-index media with very high optical confinement factor. The structure is made of multiple-layered low-index nanolayers embedded in high-index silicon waveguides. By creating multiple high-index-contrast interfaces, the normal field in the low-index nanolayer regions is significantly enhanced. It subsequently results in a very high optical confinement and power density in these regions. With the help of numerical simulation tools, the guiding and propagating characteristics of the new structure are studied and presented. The optimal structures have demonstrated confinement factors and normalized power densities in the range of 30%-60% and 20-160 mu m(-2) for the 5-20-nm thin low-index multiple nanolayers.
Generating a Sub-Nanometer-confined Optical Field in a Nanoslit Waveguiding Mode

Abstract:We propose to generate a sub-nanometer-confined optical field in a nanoslit waveguiding mode in a coupled nanowire pair (CNP). We show that, when a conventional waveguide mode with a proper polarization is evanescently coupled into a properly designed CNP with a central nanoslit, it can be efficiently channeled into a high-purity nanoslit mode within a waveguiding length <10 mu m. The CNP can be either freestanding or on-chip by using a tapered fiber or planar waveguide for input-coupling, with a coupling efficiency up to 95%. Within the slit region, the output diffraction-limited nanoslit mode offers an extremely confined optical field (similar to 0.3 nm x 3.3 nm) with a peak-to-background ratio higher than 25 dB and can be operated within a 200-nm bandwidth. The group velocity dispersion of the nanoslit mode for ultrafast pulsed operation is also briefly investigated. Compared with the previous lasing configuration, the waveguiding scheme demonstrated here is not only simple and straightforward in structural design but is also much flexible and versatile in operation. Therefore, the waveguiding scheme we show here may offer an efficient and flexible platform for exploring light-matter interactions beyond the nanometer scale, and developing optical technologies ranging from superresolution nanoscopy and atom/molecule manipulation to ultra-sensitivity detection.

Abstract:We report a numerical study of plasmonic waveguides that localize light in two dimensions at a cross section of 4.2 nm x 2.1 nm with the propagation length of 38 mu m. By varying the geometrical parameters, strong mode confinements (range from lambda(2)/3352 to lambda(2)/2557525) are achieved with controllable propagation distance (44.68-40.988 mu m), and mode size below 1 nm(2) has been demonstrated for the first time. Furthermore, a cross-index-modulation mechanism is proposed to explain the strong field localization behavior, providing guidelines for future waveguide designs. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An optical field with sub-nm confinement is essential for exploring atomic- or molecular-level light-matter interaction. While such fields demonstrated so far have typically point-like cross-sections, an optical field having a higher-dimensional cross-section may offer higher flexibility and/or efficiency in applications. Here, we propose generating a nanoscale blade-like optical field in a coupled nanofiber pair (CNP) with a 1-nm-width central slit. Based on a strong mode coupling-enabled slit waveguide mode, a sub-nm-thickness blade-like optical field can be generated with a cross-section down to ∼0.28 nm ×38 nm at 1550 nm wavelength (i.e., a thickness of ∼ λ 0 /5000) and a peak-to-background intensity ratio (PBR) higher than 20 dB. The slit waveguide mode of the CNP can be launched from one of the two nanofibers that are connected to a standard optical fiber via an adiabatical fiber taper, in which a fundamental waveguide mode of the fiber can be converted into a high-purity slit mode with high efficiency (>98 % ) within a CNP length of less than 10 μm at 1550 nm wavelength. The wavelength-dependent behaviors and group velocity dispersion in mode converting processes are also investigated, showing that such a CNP-based design is also suitable for broadband and ultrafast pulsed operation. Our results may open up new opportunities for studying light-matter interaction down to the sub-nm scale, as well as for exploring ultra-high-resolution optical technology ranging from super-resolution nanoscopy to chemical bond manipulation.
Silicon-Slot-Mediated Guiding of Plasmonic Modes: The Realization of Subwavelength Optical Confinement With Low Propagation Loss

Abstract:Waveguiding platforms consisting of metallic nano-wires embedded inside vertical-type dielectric slot waveguides are proposed and the guiding properties are investigated at the telecom wavelength. It is shown that the characteristics of the plasmonic modes can be strongly modified owing to the existence of the silicon rails in close proximity to the metallic nanowire, which enables low-loss light guiding with subdiffraction-limited mode area. Systematical analysis regarding the variation of key geometric parameters has revealed that the symmetric hybrid mode can exist within a wide-range of physical dimensions, and demonstrates improved optical performance over either the conventional hybrid plasmonic mode or the fundamental plasmonic mode supported by a single metal nanowire. Furthermore, we show numerically that the supported symmetric and asymmetric modes can be separately excited through controlling the polarization state of the Gaussian beam that illuminated onto the nanowire tip. The presented hybrid waveguides naturally extend the capabilities of both the silicon slot and metal nanowire structures, which could facilitate a number of potential applications at the subwavelength scale.

Abstract:Dielectric waveguide with deep subwavelength mode confinement based on coupled semiconductor nanowires is proposed.Through the coupling between two adjacent nanowires with high refractive indexes, light can be efficiently confined in the nano-gap between the nanowires with a low refractive index. Numerical simulations indicate that the effective mode area of such a waveguide can be as small as λ20/200, which is one order of magnitude smaller than that of a single nanowire, and such a mode confinement is comparable to that of hybrid plasmonic waveguide. It is also shown that from the view of real applications, possible existing low refractive index oxidization layers of nanowires, low refractive index substrate and small deviation of nanowire dimensions do not have significant influence on the property of the waveguide. As the propagation length is theoretically infinite for dielectric waveguides, such a coupled nanowire waveguide with deep subwavelength mode confinement may have important applications in future integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:Selective area quantum well intermixing is used to create buried heterostructure narrow waveguides, which are shown be effective waveguides for a narrow range of wavelengths near the lasing wavelength of the structure. Measurements on as-grown and uniformly intermixed slab waveguide are used to determine the refractive index of the two regions, and the net refractive index difference is used to predict modal behaviour of the buried waveguides.

Abstract:A vertical slot LiNbO3 waveguide with an Ag nanowire and 3L MoS2 embedded in the low-refractive index slot region is proposed for the purpose of improving light confinement. We find that the proposed waveguide has a novel dielectric based plasmonic mode, where local light field is enhanced by the Ag nanowire. The mode exhibits an extremely large figure of merit (FoM) of 6.5×106, one order of magnitude larger than that the largest FoM of any plasmonic waveguide reported in the literature to date. The waveguide also has an extremely long propagation length of 84 cm in the visible wavelength at 680 nm. Furthermore, the waveguide has a low sub-micro bending loss and can be directly connected to all-dielectric waveguides with an extremely low coupling loss. The proposed vertical slot LiNbO3 waveguide is a promising candidate for the realization of ultrahigh integration density tunable circuits in the visible spectral range.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the optical transmission at 1550 nm of the fundamental slot modes (quasi-TM modes) in horizontal single and multiple slot waveguides and ring resonators consisting of deposited amorphous silicon and silicon dioxide. We demonstrate that the horizontal multiple slot configuration provides enhanced optical confinement in low index slot regions compared to a horizontal single slot structure with the same total SiO2 layer thickness by comparing their thermo-optic coefficients for the horizontal slot ring resonators. We show in these early structures that horizontal slot waveguides have low propagation loss of 6 approximately 7 dB/cm. The waveguide loss is mainly due to a-Si material absorption. The addition of a-Si/SiO(2) interfaces does not introduce significant scattering loss in a horizontal multiple slot waveguide compared to a horizontal single slot waveguide.

Abstract:A hybrid plasmonic waveguide based on a silicon-on-insulator substrate with an air trench is proposed and investigated. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the nano-scale air trench could result in strong local field enhancement and tight mode confinement. Besides, the transmission loss of the fundamental hybrid plasmonic mode could also be reduced despite the existence of the high-index silicon rib. The proposed structure is compatible with standard nanofabrication process based on the silicon wafers and could enable various nanophotonic integrated components.

Abstract:The surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have attracted considerable attention because of their ability to localize, confine, and guide electromagnetic energy at the subwavelength scale beyond the diffraction limit. Innovative waveguide structures, including slab, coaxial, dielectric-loaded and other waveguide components, have followed in the wake of the hybrid plasmonic because it features a simultaneous subwavelength mode confinement and relative long-range propagation. Here, We present an investigation of a novel slot waveguide consisting of two hybrid plasmonic strip with a metal-oxide-semiconductor structure which can be compatible with CMOS process. Compared to a structure with homogeneous high-refractive-index silicon embedded by slot, the two plasmonic structure provides strong optical field concentration for slot waveguide. Numerical simulations based on the finite-element method demonstrated that the hybrid plasmonic slot waveguide performs relatively high optical confinement ability, that is nearly twice as much as the traditional silicon waveguide's. Furthermore, the propagation length of proposed structure can reach 46.7 um. So, the proposed structure exhibits better tradeoff between mode confinement and propagation length because of the novel structure of the layers. The proposed waveguide can be exploited for on-chip integration of Si-based electronic circuits. The optical characteristics of a new Ag-silica-silicon-silica-slot-silicon-silica-Ag waveguide can be optimized by tuning the sizes of the layers. Optimal results showed that the proposed hybrid waveguide could achieve 2D tight mode confinement with relatively low propagation loss when the height of silicon is 125nm, the height of silica is 10nm, height of Ag is 40nm with its width is 200nm. Our proposed structure can be realized using a standard CMOS fabrication process and has the potential to enable the production of compact on-chip integration.

Abstract:The trapping of photons in low-refraction-index materials is thought to be prohibited in conventional photonic structures that employ total internal reflection. Specifically, the whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavity, which is an important optical component, has to rely on a high contrast of the refraction index with the surrounding environment to manifest excellent light confinement. Here, we propose and demonstrate experimentally an optical microcavity structure consisting of a low-refraction-index silica microtoroid directly bonded on a high-refraction-index silicon substrate. The resonant structure supports high-Q fundamental WGMs in both visible and communication bands, while higher-order modes are suppressed significantly due to the strong leakage into the silicon substrate at long wavelengths. The highest measured quality factor exceeds ten million and low-threshold microcavity Raman lasing is also realized.

Abstract:A hybrid plasmonic waveguide with double low-index nano-slots is introduced. The fabrication is simple and compatible with the standard processes for SOI wafers. The theoretical investigation shows that the present hybrid plasmonic waveguide has a low loss and consequently a relatively long propagation distance (at the order of several tens of lambda). For TE polarization, there is a strong field enhancement in the double nanoslots. More power is confined in the low-index nano-slots for a smaller core width. For a 50nm-wide hybrid plasmonic waveguide with double 10nm-wide slots, the power confinement factor in the nano-slots is as high as 85% and the effective area is as small as 0.007 mu m(2) at 1550nm. Consequently, the power density in the nano-slots becomes very high, e. g., > 120 mu m(-2), which is very desired for many applications. For the present hybrid plasmonic waveguide, the lateral dimension could be less than 50nm and the calculated decoupled separation for two parallel identical waveguides is only 0.62 mu m, which is helpful to realize photonic integration circuits with ultra-high integration density. Abstract:Bound state in the continuum (BIC) has been considered a promising strategy to reduce fabrication complexity and radiative loss. Despite the successful demonstration of many BIC-based configurations, their mode confinement is comparable to conventional dielectric waveguides. Even though plasmonics with strong light localization have been introduced into BICs, the intrinsic ohmic loss is still a facing challenge to be conquered. Herein, we propose a new approach, to our knowledge for the first time, that integrates subwavelength confinement and optical BIC in all dielectric slot waveguides. A nanogap with low refractive index is utilized to separate the top waveguide and high-index substrate, leading to strong mode localization and energy confinement (∼ λ2/30). Surprisingly, leveraging on the concept of optical BICs, the leakage channels of the waveguide bound mode can be readily engineered to cancel each other through destructive interference, which effectively suppresses the optical dissipation. Moreover, the subwavelength confinement is observed in ultrahigh-Q microring resonators, resulting in a giant enhancement of the Purcell factor (> 108). Our findings introduce a new concept into the BIC family and provide novel thoughts to design BIC photonics, which may show superiority in achieving low threshold lasers and highly sensitive sensors.
