Abstract:We propose to generate a sub-nanometer-confined optical field in a nanoslit waveguiding mode in a coupled nanowire pair (CNP). We show that, when a conventional waveguide mode with a proper polarization is evanescently coupled into a properly designed CNP with a central nanoslit, it can be efficiently channeled into a high-purity nanoslit mode within a waveguiding length <10 mu m. The CNP can be either freestanding or on-chip by using a tapered fiber or planar waveguide for input-coupling, with a coupling efficiency up to 95%. Within the slit region, the output diffraction-limited nanoslit mode offers an extremely confined optical field (similar to 0.3 nm x 3.3 nm) with a peak-to-background ratio higher than 25 dB and can be operated within a 200-nm bandwidth. The group velocity dispersion of the nanoslit mode for ultrafast pulsed operation is also briefly investigated. Compared with the previous lasing configuration, the waveguiding scheme demonstrated here is not only simple and straightforward in structural design but is also much flexible and versatile in operation. Therefore, the waveguiding scheme we show here may offer an efficient and flexible platform for exploring light-matter interactions beyond the nanometer scale, and developing optical technologies ranging from superresolution nanoscopy and atom/molecule manipulation to ultra-sensitivity detection.

Abstract:By near-field coupling between a single nanowire (SNW) and a coupled nanowire pair (CNP), we demonstrate a new method to generate a sub-nanometer-confined optical field $(\sim 0.3\times 3.1\ \text{nm}^{2})$ in a nanoslit waveguiding mode at 550-nm wavelength.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.
Generating a Nanoscale Blade-Like Optical Field in a Coupled Nanofiber Pair

Abstract:An optical field with sub-nm confinement is essential for exploring atomic- or molecular-level light-matter interaction. While such fields demonstrated so far have typically point-like cross-sections, an optical field having a higher-dimensional cross-section may offer higher flexibility and/or efficiency in applications. Here, we propose generating a nanoscale blade-like optical field in a coupled nanofiber pair (CNP) with a 1-nm-width central slit. Based on a strong mode coupling-enabled slit waveguide mode, a sub-nm-thickness blade-like optical field can be generated with a cross-section down to ∼0.28 nm ×38 nm at 1550 nm wavelength (i.e., a thickness of ∼ λ 0 /5000) and a peak-to-background intensity ratio (PBR) higher than 20 dB. The slit waveguide mode of the CNP can be launched from one of the two nanofibers that are connected to a standard optical fiber via an adiabatical fiber taper, in which a fundamental waveguide mode of the fiber can be converted into a high-purity slit mode with high efficiency (>98 % ) within a CNP length of less than 10 μm at 1550 nm wavelength. The wavelength-dependent behaviors and group velocity dispersion in mode converting processes are also investigated, showing that such a CNP-based design is also suitable for broadband and ultrafast pulsed operation. Our results may open up new opportunities for studying light-matter interaction down to the sub-nm scale, as well as for exploring ultra-high-resolution optical technology ranging from super-resolution nanoscopy to chemical bond manipulation.
All-Dielectric Nanolaser with Subnanometer Field Confinement

Abstract: The ability to generate a laser field with ultratight spatial confinement is important for pushing the limit of optical science and technology. Although plasmon lasers can offer sub-diffraction-confined laser fields, it is restricted by a trade-off between optical confinement and loss of free-electron oscillation in metals. We show here an all-dielectric nanolaser that can circumvent the confinement-loss trade-off, and offer a field confinement down to subnanometer level. The ultra-confined lasing field, supported by low-loss oscillation of polarized bound electrons surrounding a 1-nm-width slit in a coupled CdS nanowire pair, is manifested as the dominant peak of a TE0-like lasing mode around 520-nm wavelength, with a field confinement down to 0.23 nm and a peak-to-background ratio of ~32.7 dB. This laser may pave a way towards new regions for nanolasers and light-matter interaction.

Abstract:One major research direction in modern photonics and nano-optics is the theoretical and experimental investigations of new types of guided electromagnetic waves that can be used for the development of subwavelength waveguides and intercormectors that overcome the so-called diffraction limit of light.Surface plasmon polaritons are among the most promising candidates for subwavelength optical confinement.Based on the coupling theory of hybrid structure and the excitation theory of SPPs in groove plasmon waveguide,a design of a hybrid nanorod plasmonic waveguide for subwavelength confinement was presented.Energy confinement and propagation loss have been investigated using numerical simulations,the results indicated that the mode area can be confined to a area more than 500 times smaller than that of a diffraction limited spot,and by increasing the geometrical properties of this structure,the propagation distance is increased to the millimeter range.

Abstract:Nanowires supporting propagating surface plasmons can function as nanowaveguides to realize the light guiding with field confinement beyond the diffraction limit, providing fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits. This review covers the recent developments of plasmon waveguiding in nanowires, mainly including plasmon waveguiding in metal nanowires, coupling of nanowire plasmons and emitters, hybrid nanowire waveguides and plasmonic gain, and nanowire photonic devices. We first introduce the main techniques for fabricating metal nanowires, the plasmon modes in metal nanowires and the excitation/detection methods. We then discuss the fundamental properties of plasmon propagation and emission, including zigzag, chiral and spin-dependent propagation, mode conversion, loss and propagation length, group velocity, terminal emission, and leaky radiation. Then the interactions between nanowires and emitters are reviewed, especially the coupling of single nanowires and single quantum emitters. Finally, we briefly introduce the hybrid nanowire waveguide composed of a semiconductor nanowire and a metal film with an intervening thin insulator and highlight a few nanophotonic devices based on plasmonic nanowire networks or plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanowire structures.
10-W-level CW waveguiding in an optical micro/nanofiber

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) with a diameter below or close to the wavelength of the light, have attracted significant interest for applications ranging from optical sensing, nonlinear optics, to optomechanics and atom optics. While continuous-wave (CW) optical waveguiding is frequently adopted, so far most of the MNFs are operated in a low-power region (e.g., < 0.1 W). Here we demonstrate high-power CW optical waveguiding around 1550-nm wavelength in a silica MNF with power up to 13 W, which is more than 30 times higher than demonstrated previously. Our results may pave a way towards high-power MNF optics, for both scientific research and technological applications.

Abstract:As typical one‐dimensional nanostructures for waveguiding tightly confined optical fields beyond the diffraction limit, metal nanowires have been used as versatile nanoscale building blocks for functional plasmonic and photonic structures and devices. Metal nanowires, especially those fabricated by bottom‐up synthesis such as Ag and Au nanowires, usually exhibit excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness with diameters down to tens of nanometers, which offers great opportunities for plasmonic waveguiding of optical fields with deep‐subwavelength confinement, coherence maintenance and low scattering losses. Based on nanowire plasmonic waveguides, a variety of applications ranging from plasmonic couplers, interferometers, resonators to photon emitters have been reported in recent years. In this article, significant progresses in these nanowire plasmonic waveguides, circuits and devices are reviewed. Future outlook and challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:We present a highly efficient optical field concentrator that is capable of confining optical field in nanometer-thin low-index media with very high optical confinement factor. The structure is made of multiple-layered low-index nanolayers embedded in high-index silicon waveguides. By creating multiple high-index-contrast interfaces, the normal field in the low-index nanolayer regions is significantly enhanced. It subsequently results in a very high optical confinement and power density in these regions. With the help of numerical simulation tools, the guiding and propagating characteristics of the new structure are studied and presented. The optimal structures have demonstrated confinement factors and normalized power densities in the range of 30%-60% and 20-160 mu m(-2) for the 5-20-nm thin low-index multiple nanolayers.

Abstract:We proposed a photonic approach to a lasing mode supported by low-loss oscillation of polarized bound electrons in an active nano-slit-waveguide cavity, which circumvents the confinement-loss trade-off of nanoplasmonics, and offers an optical confinement down to sub-1-nm level with a peak-to-background ratio of ∼30 dB . Experimentally, the extremely confined lasing field is realized as the dominant peak of a TE0 -like lasing mode around 720-nm wavelength, in 1-nm-level width slit-waveguide cavities in coupled CdSe nanowire pairs. The measured lasing characteristics agree well with the theoretical calculations. Waveguides Used for Nano- Photonic Circuits

Abstract:Key challenge in the design of plasmonic nano waveguide is to simultaneously achieve high confinement and low propagation loss. This paper presents that a planar hybrid dielectric-loade d plasmonic nano-waveguide (HDLW) could be a promising candidate to build high-performance plasmonic components. Our studies show that the HDLW can achieve better trade-off between the field intensity confinement and the propagation length than a metal-insulator- metal nanoslot waveguide does. Consequently, a 90°-circular bend built with the HDLW can achieve a total loss of 0.3 dB with a small bending radius of 2J.1m. A ring resonator formed with the HDLW shows the excellent performance: with a ring radius of 5 J.1m, this resonator exhibits a large free spectral range (22 nm), a narrow bandwidth (4 nm), and high extinction ration (20 dB). The superior performance of these plasmonic components makes them promising building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Subwavelength confined waveguiding is experimentally demonstrated with high refractive index dielectric nanoparticles with photon energy propagation at distances beyond 500 μm. These particles have naturally occurring electric and magnetic dipole resonances. When they are placed in a 1D chain, the magnetic resonances of adjacent elements couple to each other, providing a means to transport energy at visible or NIR wavelengths in a confined mode. Chains of nanoparticles made of silicon were fabricated and guided waves were measured with near-field scanning optical microscopy. Propagation loss is quantified at 34 dB/mm for 720 nm and 5.5 dB/mm for 960 nm wavelengths with 150 and 220 nm diameter particles, respectively. Simulations confirm the unique properties of this waveguiding in comparison with photonic crystals. The resonant nature of the waveguide lays a foundation for integrated photonics beyond nanowire waveguides of silicon and silicon nitride. This technology is promising for more compact and deeper photonic integration such as right angle bends, more compact modulators, slow light and interfacing with single photon emitters for photonic integrated circuits, quantum communications, and biosensing.

Abstract:Abstract (100 Word Limit): When its size goes down to the wavelength of the guided light, an optical nanofibre/nanowire exhibits interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, abnormal dispersion, enhanced surface effects and excellent mechanical flexibilities, which opens opportunities for combining waveguide optics with near-field optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, quantum optics and optomechanics on the nanoscale and low power level, and intrigues a variety of novel nanophotonic components/devices. This talk reviews the principles and technological applications of optical nanofibres and nanowires. Future applications of these one-dimensional building blocks for optical communications and sensing are also discussed. Presenter Bio (100 Word Limit): Limin Tong received his BS and MSc degrees in Physics and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1991, 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1997 he joined the Department of Physics, Zhejiang University, China as an assistant professor. In 2001 he joined Mazur group, Harvard University as a visiting scientist, and returned Zhejiang University in 2004. He is currently a professor and director of Department of Optical Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interest has been in the area of nanophotonics and fibre optics.

Abstract:We report the realization of strongly confined low-loss optical waveguiding at telecommunication wavelength by exploiting the hybridization of photonic modes guided by coupled dielectric mode and Bloch surface polaritons on the interface between one-dimensional photonic crystal and dielectric nanowire. Owing to the combined effects induced by the coupling between two types of guided modes, tight field localization in conjunction with significantly lower propagation loss can be achieved simultaneously. The characteristics of the hybrid modes are comprehensively numerically investigated through tuning key structural parameters of the coupled dielectric nanowire and its distance to the photonic crystal surface. The hybrid mode could effectively balance the compromise between the mode confinement and propagation loss for a wide geometrical parameter range. It reveals the hybrid mode is capable of enabling larger propagation distance (centimeter level) with subwavelength mode confinement, leading to a high figure of merit nearly one order of magnitude larger as compared to the conventional hybrid waves in dielectric-metal-based surface plasmon waveguides over the range of dimensions considered. The outstanding properties of the proposed guiding scheme could open up possibilities for a variety of high-performance intriguing nanophotonic components.
Light confinement in low contrast slot waveguide structures investigated

Abstract:The advent of slot waveguide structure has led the field of nano-photonics into an era, where maximum light can be confined inside low index slot guarded by high index slabs. Already in use slot waveguides (contrast ratio is 2.42) have two distinct properties over the conventional waveguides, i.e. high E-field amplitude, optical power, optical intensity in low index materials and a strong E-field confinement is localized to nanometer-size low index regions. We hereby propose a low contrast double slot waveguide structure (contrast ratio is 1.65); where low index slots comprising of air surrounded with high index glass slabs. The whole structure is based on substrate comprising of glass whereas cladding is of air. Novelty lies in showing high E-field amplitude, optical power, optical intensity and a strong E-field confinement in low index slot regions. Low contrast double slot structure usage in forming passive nano-devices had been verified by simulating a Y-branch coupler. ©2008 IEEE.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of dispersion-engineered nanowire photonic crystal waveguides suitable for experiments in quantum optics and atomic physics with optically trapped atoms. Detailed design methodology and specifications are provided, as are the processing steps used to create silicon nitride waveguides of low optical loss in the near-IR. Measurements of the waveguide optical properties and power-handling capability are also presented.

Abstract:Emerging communication applications call for a road map towards nanoscale photonic components and systems. Although metal-based nanostructures theoretically offer a solution to enable nanoscale photonics, the key demonstration of optical modes with deep sub-diffraction-limited confinement and significant propagation distances has not been experimentally achieved because of the trade-off between optical confinement and metallic losses. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of truly nanoscale guided waves in a metal– insulator–semiconductor device featuring low-loss and broadband operation. Near-field scanning optical microscopy reveals mode sizes down to 50×60 nm2 at visible and near-infrared wavelengths propagating more than 20 times the vacuum wavelength. Interference spectroscopy confirms that the optical mode hybridization between a surface plasmon and a dielectric mode concentrates the hybridized mode inside a nanometre thin gap. This nanoscale waveguide holds promise for next generation on-chip optical communication systems that integrate light sources, modulators or switches, nonlinear and quantum optics. Metal-based nanostructures offer a solution to scale down photonics to the nanoscale. Sorgeret al. directly demonstrate waveguiding of ultra-small propagating waves at visible and near-infrared frequencies using NSOM imaging, with the potential for nanoscale photonic applications such as bio-sensing.

Abstract:Fundamental understanding of the size dependence of nanoscale optical confinement in semiconductor nanowire waveguides, as expressed by changes in the dispersion of light is crucial for the optimal design of nanophotonic devices. Measurements of the dispersion are particularly challenging for nanoscale cavities due to difficulties associated with the in- and out-coupling of light resulting from diffraction effects. We report the strong size dependence of optical dispersion and associated group velocities in subwavelength width ZnSe nanowire waveguide cavities, using a technique based on Fabry-Perot resonator modes as probes over a wide energy range. Furthermore, we observed subwavelength (lambda/9) dispersionless waveguiding and significant slowing of the propagating light by 90% (d8). These results, in addition to providing insights into nanoscale optical transport, will facilitate the rational design of nanowire photonic devices with tailored dispersion and group velocities.
