Abstract:We propose to generate a sub-nanometer-confined optical field in a nanoslit waveguiding mode in a coupled nanowire pair (CNP). We show that, when a conventional waveguide mode with a proper polarization is evanescently coupled into a properly designed CNP with a central nanoslit, it can be efficiently channeled into a high-purity nanoslit mode within a waveguiding length <10 mu m. The CNP can be either freestanding or on-chip by using a tapered fiber or planar waveguide for input-coupling, with a coupling efficiency up to 95%. Within the slit region, the output diffraction-limited nanoslit mode offers an extremely confined optical field (similar to 0.3 nm x 3.3 nm) with a peak-to-background ratio higher than 25 dB and can be operated within a 200-nm bandwidth. The group velocity dispersion of the nanoslit mode for ultrafast pulsed operation is also briefly investigated. Compared with the previous lasing configuration, the waveguiding scheme demonstrated here is not only simple and straightforward in structural design but is also much flexible and versatile in operation. Therefore, the waveguiding scheme we show here may offer an efficient and flexible platform for exploring light-matter interactions beyond the nanometer scale, and developing optical technologies ranging from superresolution nanoscopy and atom/molecule manipulation to ultra-sensitivity detection.

Abstract:As typical one-dimensional nanostructures, photonic nanowires (e.g., semiconductor nanowires, glass nanowires, polymer nanowires and metallic nanowires) offer unique properties for manipulating light on nanoscale with tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, field enhancement and abnormal dispersion[1], which opens new opportunities for exploring light-matter interaction on the nanoscale, as well as for intriguing nanoscale photonic circuits and devices that is superior to their conventional counterparts. This talk introduces our recent work on the generation (e.g., nanowire light emission[2,3] and lasing[4,5]), wavelength conversion (e.g., second-harmonic and supercontinuum generation in single nanowires[6,7]), propagation (e.g., nanowire waveguides[8]), modulation (e.g., single nanowire ultrafast optical modulators[9]) and detection (e.g., single nanowire photodetector [10] and sensors [11,12]) of light with single nanowires.
Subwavelength-diameter Silica Wire for Light In-Coupling to Silicon-Based Waveguide

Abstract:Coupling between subwavelength-diameter silica wires and silicon-based waveguides is studied using the parallel three-dimensional (3D) finite-different time-domain method. Conventional butt-coupling to a silica-substrated silicon wire waveguide gives above 40% transmission at the wavelength range from 1300 to 1750 nm with good robustness against axial misalignments. Slow light can be generated by counter-directional coupling between a silica wire and a two-dimensional (2D) silicon photonic crystal slab waveguide. Through dispersion-band engineering, 82% transmission is achieved over a coupling distance of 50 lattice constants. The group velocity is estimated as 1/35 of the light speed in vacuum.

Abstract:We demonstrate single mode lasing in coupled CdSe nanowires. By coupling two 420 nm diameter CdSe nanowires to form an X-structure cavity, single-mode lasing emission around 734.3 nm is obtained with line width of 0.11 nm and lasing threshold of about 120 μJ/cm2. Mode selection in the lasing nanowire is realized via Vernier effect in the coupled cavities. Our results suggest a simple approach to single-mode nanowire lasers.

Abstract:An optical field with sub-nm confinement is essential for exploring atomic- or molecular-level light-matter interaction. While such fields demonstrated so far have typically point-like cross-sections, an optical field having a higher-dimensional cross-section may offer higher flexibility and/or efficiency in applications. Here, we propose generating a nanoscale blade-like optical field in a coupled nanofiber pair (CNP) with a 1-nm-width central slit. Based on a strong mode coupling-enabled slit waveguide mode, a sub-nm-thickness blade-like optical field can be generated with a cross-section down to ∼0.28 nm ×38 nm at 1550 nm wavelength (i.e., a thickness of ∼ λ 0 /5000) and a peak-to-background intensity ratio (PBR) higher than 20 dB. The slit waveguide mode of the CNP can be launched from one of the two nanofibers that are connected to a standard optical fiber via an adiabatical fiber taper, in which a fundamental waveguide mode of the fiber can be converted into a high-purity slit mode with high efficiency (>98 % ) within a CNP length of less than 10 μm at 1550 nm wavelength. The wavelength-dependent behaviors and group velocity dispersion in mode converting processes are also investigated, showing that such a CNP-based design is also suitable for broadband and ultrafast pulsed operation. Our results may open up new opportunities for studying light-matter interaction down to the sub-nm scale, as well as for exploring ultra-high-resolution optical technology ranging from super-resolution nanoscopy to chemical bond manipulation.

Abstract:Subwavelength-confined hybrid surface modes of low attenuation were found in a cylindrical waveguide with a high-permittivity-dielectric nanocore nested in a metallic nanotube. When phase-matching conditions are met, mode transfer occurs, which is associated with a strong anti-crossing behavior. At the transfer radius, a hybrid mode with superior properties, namely low propagation attenuation and high light confinement, transforms into the other that has inferior properties. Thus, the superior mode with subwavelength confinement can be efficiently excited through this mode-transfer process when we taper the nested nanocore. This nanoscale cylindrical metallic-dielectric waveguide may have applications in high-density integrated photonic circuits, plasmonic sources, and biosensing techniques. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

Abstract:Recent advances in the fabrication and manipulation of sub-wavelength optical fibers provide new methods for building chemical and biological sensors, generating supercontinuum light by nonlinear pulse propagation, and constructing microphotonic components and devices. We examine the properties of sub-wavelength dimension optical fibers as waveguides. The reported silica submicrometer- or nanometer-diameter wires are suitable for low-loss optical wave guiding. Thanks to their excellent uniformity, large length, high flexibility, and strength, these wires can be manipulated and assembled with high accuracy.
Broadly Defining Lasing Wavelengths in Single Bandgap-Graded Semiconductor Nanowires.

Abstract:Designing lasing wavelengths and modes is essential to the practical applications of nanowire (NW) lasers. Here, according to the localized photoluminescence spectra, we first demonstrate the ability to define lasing wavelengths over a wide range (up to 119 nm) based on an individual bandgap-graded CdSSe NW by forward cutting the NW from CdSe to CdS end. Furthermore, free spectral range (FSR) and modes of the obtained lasers could be controlled by backward cutting the NW from CdS to CdSe end step-by-step. Interestingly, single-mode NW laser with predefined lasing wavelength is realized in short NWs because of the strong mode competition and increase in FSR. Finally, the gain properties of the bandgap-graded NWs are investigated. The combination of wavelength and mode selectivity in NW lasers may provide a new platform for the next generation of integrated optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Compact wavelength-sensitive optical components are desirable for optical information processing and communication in photonic integrated system. In this work, optical waveguiding along single composition-graded CdS(x)Se(1-x) nanowires were systematically investigated. Under a focused laser excitation, the excited light can be guided passively along the bandgap-increased direction of the nanowire, keeping the photonic energy of the guided light almost unchanged during the whole propagation. In comparison, the excited light is guided actively through incessantly repeated band-to-band reabsorption and re-emitting processes along the bandgap-decreased direction, resulting in a gradual wavelength conversion during propagation. On the basis of this wavelength-converted waveguiding, a concept of nanoscale wavelength splitter is demonstrated by assembling a graded nanowire with several composition-uniform nanowires into branched nanowire structure. Our study indicates that composition-graded semiconductor nanowires would open new exciting opportunities in developing new wavelength-sensitive optical components for integrated nanophotonic devices.
Single-mode Nanolasers Based on FP-WGM Hybrid Cavity Coupling.

Abstract:As an idealized light source, semiconductor nanowire (NW) lasers have been extensively studied due to its potential applications in many fields such as optoelectronics, nanophononics, optical communication, signal processing, and displays. In this letter, we proposed a novel approach to realize a single-mode nanolaser by forming an Fabry-Perot whispering gallery mode (FP-WGM) hybrid nanocavity between two cross-contact CdS NWs, i.e. x and y-NW. In our method, x-NW supports the regular FP oscillation in the axis direction while the cross section of y-NW provides a ultrasmall WGM nanocavity with a higher Q-factor and mode election which confirms the specific single mode can be excited. Experimentally, single-mode lasing emission centered at 517 nm was obtained with full width at half maximum of 0.08 nm and lasing threshold of similar to 50 kW cm-2. The suggested designing skills projected a general strategy for lasing mode regulation and single-mode realization. The single-mode low-threshold lasing strategy in coupled NWs may open a new avenue for practical applications of NW lasers and further trigger other photonic devices at a visible range.

Abstract:The use of a single silver nanowire as a flexible coupler to transform a free space beam into a Bloch surface wave propagating on a dielectric multilayer is proposed. Based on Huygens’ Principle, when a Gaussian beam is focused onto a straight silver nanowire, a Bloch surface wave is generated and propagates perpendicular to the nanowire. By curving the silver nanowire, the surface wave can be focused. Furthermore, the spatial phase of the incident laser beam can be actively controlled with the aid of a spatial light modulator, resulting in the reconfigurable or dynamically controlled Bloch surface waves. The low cost of the chemically synthesized silver nanowires and the high flexibility with regard to tuning the spatial phase of the incident light make this approach very promising for various applications including optical micromanipulation, fluorescence imaging, and sensing.
All-Dielectric Nanolaser with Subnanometer Field Confinement

Abstract: The ability to generate a laser field with ultratight spatial confinement is important for pushing the limit of optical science and technology. Although plasmon lasers can offer sub-diffraction-confined laser fields, it is restricted by a trade-off between optical confinement and loss of free-electron oscillation in metals. We show here an all-dielectric nanolaser that can circumvent the confinement-loss trade-off, and offer a field confinement down to subnanometer level. The ultra-confined lasing field, supported by low-loss oscillation of polarized bound electrons surrounding a 1-nm-width slit in a coupled CdS nanowire pair, is manifested as the dominant peak of a TE0-like lasing mode around 520-nm wavelength, with a field confinement down to 0.23 nm and a peak-to-background ratio of ~32.7 dB. This laser may pave a way towards new regions for nanolasers and light-matter interaction.

Abstract:Using a nanoscale silica fiber taper,light can be efficiently coupled into a single ZnO nanowire by means of evanescent coupling. The method is valid for launching light into a single nanowire in the ultraviolet to infrared range with a coupling efficiency of 25%. Low-loss optical guiding of ZnO nanowires is demonstrated, and the photoluminescence of a single ZnO nanowire is also observed. Compared to conventional approaches in which a lensfocused laser beam is used to excite nanowires at specific wavelengths, this evanescent coupling approach has advantages such as high coupling efficiency and broad-band validity,and it is promising for the optical characterization of semiconductor nanowires or nanoribbons.

Abstract:We demonstrate single-mode laser emission in single nanowires. By folding a 200 nm diameter CdSe nanowire to form loop mirrors, single-mode laser emission around 738 nm wavelength is obtained with line width of 0.12 nm and low threshold. The mode selection is realized by the vernier effect of coupled cavities in the folded nanowire. In addition, the loop structure makes it possible to tune the nanowire cavity, opening an opportunity to realize a tunable single-mode nanowire laser.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) with a diameter below or close to the wavelength of the light, have attracted significant interest for applications ranging from optical sensing, nonlinear optics, to optomechanics and atom optics. While continuous-wave (CW) optical waveguiding is frequently adopted, so far most of the MNFs are operated in a low-power region (e.g., < 0.1 W). Here we demonstrate high-power CW optical waveguiding around 1550-nm wavelength in a silica MNF with power up to 13 W, which is more than 30 times higher than demonstrated previously. Our results may pave a way towards high-power MNF optics, for both scientific research and technological applications.

Abstract:Dielectric waveguide with deep subwavelength mode confinement based on coupled semiconductor nanowires is proposed.Through the coupling between two adjacent nanowires with high refractive indexes, light can be efficiently confined in the nano-gap between the nanowires with a low refractive index. Numerical simulations indicate that the effective mode area of such a waveguide can be as small as λ20/200, which is one order of magnitude smaller than that of a single nanowire, and such a mode confinement is comparable to that of hybrid plasmonic waveguide. It is also shown that from the view of real applications, possible existing low refractive index oxidization layers of nanowires, low refractive index substrate and small deviation of nanowire dimensions do not have significant influence on the property of the waveguide. As the propagation length is theoretically infinite for dielectric waveguides, such a coupled nanowire waveguide with deep subwavelength mode confinement may have important applications in future integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:Nanowires supporting propagating surface plasmons can function as nanowaveguides to realize the light guiding with field confinement beyond the diffraction limit, providing fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits. This review covers the recent developments of plasmon waveguiding in nanowires, mainly including plasmon waveguiding in metal nanowires, coupling of nanowire plasmons and emitters, hybrid nanowire waveguides and plasmonic gain, and nanowire photonic devices. We first introduce the main techniques for fabricating metal nanowires, the plasmon modes in metal nanowires and the excitation/detection methods. We then discuss the fundamental properties of plasmon propagation and emission, including zigzag, chiral and spin-dependent propagation, mode conversion, loss and propagation length, group velocity, terminal emission, and leaky radiation. Then the interactions between nanowires and emitters are reviewed, especially the coupling of single nanowires and single quantum emitters. Finally, we briefly introduce the hybrid nanowire waveguide composed of a semiconductor nanowire and a metal film with an intervening thin insulator and highlight a few nanophotonic devices based on plasmonic nanowire networks or plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanowire structures.

Abstract:As an ideal miniaturized light source, wavelength-tunable nanolasers capable of emitting a wide spectrum stimulate intense interests for on-chip optoelectronics, optical communications, and spectroscopy. However, realization of such devices remains a major challenge because of extreme difficulties in achieving continuously reversibly tunable gain media and high quality (Q)-factor resonators on the nanoscale simultaneously. Here, exploiting single bandgap-graded CdSSe NWs and a Fabry-Pérot/whispering-gallery-mode (FP-WGM) coupling cavity, a free-standing fiber-integrated reversibly wavelength-tunable nanolaser covering a 42-nm wide spectrum at room temperature with high stability and reproducibility is demonstrated. In addition, a 1.13-nm tuning spectral resolution is realized. The substrate-free device design enables integration in optical fiber communications and information. With reversible and wide, continuous tunability of emission color and precise control per step, our work demonstrates a general approach to nanocavity coupling affording high Q-factors, enabling an ideal miniaturized module for a broad range of applications in optics and optoelectronics, with optical fiber integration.
