Abstract:Large scale and uniform SiO2 nanowires have been successfully fabricated in a high-frequency induction furnace via a Ge-catalyzed vapor liquid solid (VLS) mechanism. The nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the as-synthesized SiO2 nanowires have an amorphous structure with diameters of 20–50 nm, and lengths up to tens of micrometres. The room-temperature photoluminescence measurement of the products show that they have a blue emission band at 420 nm, reveal that the high yield, and ultralong SiO2 nanowires might have potential applications in the future optoelectronic devices. Furthermore, the growth mechanism of the SiO2 nanowires is discussed.

Abstract:SiO2:Eu3+ nanowires were prepared by a solvothermal method followed by subsequent calcination and acid washing processes. The structure, morphology, and properties of the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results indicated that the obtained SiO2:Eu3+ nanowires exhibited red emission under ultraviolet light excitation and may have potential applications in optical and biological areas. In addition, a possible formation process for the SiO2:Eu3+ nanowires is proposed in detail.

Abstract:The cathodoluminescence (CL) properties including intensity and distribution of the band to band and defect emission of the flower-like ZnO, ZnO/ZnS core–shell and tube-like ZnS nanostructures have been investigated. It is indicated that the Ultraviolet (UV) emission at 380nm of the flower-like ZnO nanostructures due to the band to band emission is weaker than their yellow emission at 600nm induced by interstitial oxygen. Moreover, the UV emission of the ZnO nanorods unevenly distributes from the tip to the end. The UV emission on the tip is stronger than that of others due to the waveguide. On the contrary, the yellow emission at 600nm is uniform. Furthermore, the UV emission of ZnO has been greatly enhanced and the yellow emission has been inhibited by the formation of ZnO/ZnS core–shell nanostructures in the sulfuration process due to the elimination of interstitial oxygen. However, the polycrystalline tube-like ZnS nanostructures shows the uniform and weak defect emission due to S vacancies.

Abstract:Novel silica nanowires and interconnected nanorings were firstly synthesized on a graphite paper by typical thermal catalytic chemical vapor deposition method, using silicon and carbon black powders as raw materials. The field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the composition and structure characterization, which indicates that the silica nanowires and interconnected nanorings were amorphous. The growth of the as-prepared silica nanowires and interconnected nanorings was related to the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism, but the nanowire-ring structure may be due to the polycentric nucleation and periodic stable growth with gradual direction changes. The room temperature photoluminescence emission spectrum showed that the silica nanostructures emitted strong blue light at 460 nm, resulting from the combination of neutral oxygen vacancy (≡Si-Si≡) and selftrapped excitons. The as-synthesized novel silica nanowires and interconnected nanorings could be a potential candidate for applications in future light-emitting diodes and optoelectronic nanodevices.

Abstract:Silicon oxide nanowires (SiONWs) have been synthesized on a Si substrate by the vapor transport reaction using pure silicon (99.99%) powder as the Si source with the help of a Au catalyst synthesized by chemical methods. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations show that the amorphous SiONWs have lengths up to several tens of micrometers and diameters of ca. 20 nm. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) analysis reveals that the SiONWs consist of Si and O elements in an atomic ratio of approximately 1:1.2. The formation process of these nanowires is closely related to the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mechanism. A blue light emission was observed which could be attributed to neutral oxygen vacancies formed in the nanowires.

Abstract:Large-quantity of amorphous SiO_2 nanowires have been synthesized by thermal evaporating SiO powder on a Si substrate at low temperature.These nanowires have diameters ranging from 15 nm to 40 nm and lengths of tens of micrometers.Selected area electron diffraction(SAED),energy dispersive spectrometry(EDS)and electron energy loss spectrum(EELS)were used to characterize the nanowires.The results show that amorphous silicon dioxide nanowires were obtained.The photoluminescence(PL)characterization spectrum of these nanowires shows a strong peak at 550 nm.Furthermore,this paper has showed that the evaporation temperature and the particle size of the SiO powder have great effect on the growth of the nanowires.

Abstract:Large-scale synthesis of amorphous silica nanowires was achieved by using simple physical evaporation of a mixture of Si and Al2O3 powders. Scanning electron microscopy observations showed that the silica nanowires have lengths of several mm and diameters of 20–100 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that these nanowires consisted of Si and O elements in an atomic ratio of approximately 1:2, consistent with the stoichiometric formula SiO2. Photoluminescence measurements showed a blue luminescence band in the wavelength range of 400–500 nm with three peaks at 420 nm, 440 nm, and 470 nm, respectively, which also differs from the previous reports of the photoluminescence for oxygen-deficient silica nanowires. This may suggest that the fully oxidized silica nanowires still have many structural defects that contribute to the photoluminescence.

Abstract:Tiny SiO2 nano-wires (SiO2-NWs) were synthesized on a p-Si (111) wafer by the chemical-vapor-deposition method. The minimum diameter of the nano-wires was around 9nm, and the length was longer than 10μm. The results of transmission electron microscopy shows that the amorphous nano-wires were composed of Si and O with an approximate atomic ratio of 1:2. Furthermore, the photoluminescence behavior of the SiO2-NWs has been also checked.

Abstract:Large scale, high density SiOx nanowires have been synthesized using a novel Fe3O4 nanoparticles catalyst. The lengths of SiOx nanowires are in the range of several tens to hundreds of micrometers, and the diameters of nanowires are 20-80 nm. Transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy show that the SiOx nanowires are amorphous, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry analysis reveals that SiOx nanowires consist of Si and 0 elements in an atomic ratio of approximately x = 1.4-1.7. The vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism is the main formation mechanism of SiOx nanowires. The SiOx nanowires have two broad photoluminescence peaks at about 405 nm and 465 nm when the 250 nm ultraviolet fluorescent light excitation is applied at room temperature. The SiOx nanowires with good photoluminescence properties are promising candidates for ultraviolet-blue optical emitting devices. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Structured silver-capped silicon nanowires were fabricated via electroless metal deposition on a silicon wafer in an ionic silver HF solution through selective chemical etching. Their formation mechanism was explained on the basis of self-assembled localized microscopic electrochemical cell model. The metal–semiconductor composite nanostructure was found to have a strong ultraviolet-emitting property with an emission peak position at 330 nm. The intensity of the peak nonmonotonously varies with annealing temperature and time, but its position remains unchanged. Emission and excitation spectral analyses suggest that the ultraviolet emission is closely related to the existence of silver vacancy defects in silver nanocaps formed during sample fabrication. A specific vacancy density is required to produce the strong ultraviolet emission.

Abstract:SiO2 amorphous nanowires and SiO2 nanocrystallites have been formed by a simple thermal evaporation process at a relatively low temperature. SEM study shows that the morphologies and sizes of SiO2 nanostructures are controlled by adjusting the growth conditions. The unique optical properties of the SiO2 nanostructures are discussed. A growth mechanism is proposed on the basis of experimental conditions and the SiO2 nanostructures growth habits.

Abstract:Violet and blue luminescent Si nanowires were fabricated by annealing an amorphous Si film on a Ni-coated Si substrate via solid-liquid-solid growth. The fabricated Si nanowires have an average diameter of 50 nm. The wire stem is composed of a crystalline Si core of several nanometers and an amorphous oxide sheath. The Si nanowires are capable of emitting strong violet and blue luminescence in the spectral region ranging from 380 to 500 nm, which has a very short decay time of tens of nanoseconds, and is remarkably different in spectral region and luminescence time from the luminescence emitted by Si nanocrystals. Abstract:A large amount of single crystal silicon nanowires are synthesized on gold-coated silicon wafers by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The lengths of the silicon nanowires are more than 100 micrometers. The samples are characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive x-ray detector (EDX) and Raman spectrum. The growth mechanism of the ultra-long silicon nanowires was also discussed.

Abstract:Silicon nanowires were prepared by a thermal evaporation of MoSi2 heating rods under controlled temperature and atmosphere. Transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction show that the nanowire consists of a crystalline Si core and an amorphous SiOx shell. There exist two major forms of nanowires possessing different morphologies and growth directions, which may indicate that different mechanisms predominate in the growth process. The photoluminescence of the Si/SiOx core-shell nanowires presents two emission bands, around 550 and 600 nm, respectively.

Abstract:We developed a one-step catalyst-free chemical vapor deposition process to synthesize Si-SiOx nanowires using tetraethoxysilane as the precursor. Observations using scanning electron microscopy showed that the Si-SiOx nanowires were 20-50 nm in diameter and tens of microns in length. The high-resolution transmission electron microscope analysis and X-ray diffraction demonstrated that the nanowires consisted of crystal silicon and amorphous SiOx. The Si and 0 with an atomic ratio of the Si-SiOx NWs were 1:1.2 according to the energy dispersion X-ray spectroscope. A systematic study on the effect of the growth conditions, such as reaction temperature, the reaction time, and the TEOS vapor flow rate was performed. The formation of Si-SiOx nanowires was implemented by the non-classical crystallization mechanism. The charged nanoparticles acting as building blocks self-assembled into nanowires. The photoluminescence measurements were carried out and showed that the Si-SiOx nanowires emitted stable ultraviolet and green luminescence excited by ultraviolet light. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Various shapes of Cu@SiO2 nanowires were fabricated on a Cu substrate via simple thermal evaporation of SiO within a high-frequency induction furnace. The morphology and structure of the Cu@SiO2 nanowires were characterized by using SEM, TEM, EDS and EDX elemental mapping. The morphology and density of the nanowires are controllable by adjusting the substrate temperature. The Cu cores are chemically stable due to the protection of the SiO2 shell. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) experiment on the shell-isolated nanowires showed excellent detecting performance compared with the bare Cu substrate. The cathodoluminescence (CL) investigation reveals that red, green and blue light emission was observed in the Silica sheath simultaneously. The as-synthesized samples have potential application in long acting and ultrasensitive SERS substrates and white light sources.

Abstract:Amorphous SiO2 nanowires are successfully fabricated on fused silica substrates covered by nickel/carbon catalyst bilayers via a method of pulsed laser deposition accompanied by annealing in ambient N-2. The field emission scanning electron microscopy images show that the optimum annealing temperature for the growth of SiO2 nanowires is about 1200 degrees C and the grown SiO2 nanowires become denser, longer and more uniform with the increment of annealing duration. The results of transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy show that the grown nanowires are amorphous and have dark spheres on their tops. The analyses of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy reveal that the nanowires are composed of SiO2 and the dark spheres on their tops contain little nickel. It is inferred that nickel, carbon and CO are the key elements to promote the SiO2 nanowire growth in the solid-liquid solid mode. Transmission spectra demonstrate that the as-grown nanowire thin films can have about 94% average transmittance in the range of 350-800 nm, meanwhile the photoluminescence spectra of the as-grown SiO2 nanowire samples show stable ultraviolet emission centered at about 363 nm with a shoulder at about 393 nm. Abstract:Highly aligned amorphous silica nanowires were prepared on silicon substrate. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED). The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of silica nanowires showed strong blue emission peaked at 401 and 440nm under 274nm excitation wavelength. The growth mechanism of the nanowires was proposed.

Abstract:A simple chemical route for ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires with preferential (002) orientation is reported. Sodium sulfide and zinc nitrate were employed to supply S and Zn atoms at 60 degrees C to form ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires structures. Electron diffraction measurement shows that the ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanostructure is single crystalline. Interesting features are found in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ZnS-coated ZnO nanostructures. After coating, the UV emission of nanorods is dramatically enhanced at the expense of the green emission. The core/shell structure with higher band gap shell material and reduced surface states should be responsible for this PL enhancement.
