Abstract:Steel-basalt hybrid fibers reinforced cement-based composites (SBFRCC) have excellent mechanical properties at ambient temperature. Conducting research on the behavior of SBFRCC at high temperatures is beneficial for applications in structures which may be exposed to fires. In this study, the physical properties of fibers and mechanical properties of SBFRCC exposed to high temperatures were assessed through appearance, mass loss, and compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength tests. The deterioration mechanism was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the color and mass of steel and basalt fiber change significantly with temperature. The addition of steel fiber and basalt fiber can improve residual flexural strength and splitting tensile strength. High basalt fiber content is harmful for compressive strength. The compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength of SBFRCC essentially decreases with temperature. Models were established to describe the quantitative relationship be-tween relative strength and fiber content, temperature. The addition of steel fiber and basalt fiber can effectively inhibit cracks generation and propagation by multi-stage cracking resistance. High temperature deterioration of hybrid fibers can only reduce the reinforcement, but steel fiber and basalt fiber can still play a role in bridging cracks at 900C.
Dynamic fatigue behavior of Si3N4-based ceramic tool materials at ambient and high temperatures

Abstract:Dynamic fatigue behaviors of three microwave-sintered Si3N4-based ceramic tool materials in ambient and high-temperature (800 °C) environments were investigated. The flexural strength at different loading rate (0.05 MPa/s, 0.5 MPa/s, 5 MPa/s and 15 MPa/s) was conducted by three-point bending test. The results showed that the subcritical crack growth parameter N of monolithic Si3N4, Si3N4/(W,Ti)C and Si3N4/(W,Ti)C/Ni at ambient temperature was 57.5, 34.8 and 81, respectively. The fatigue resistance performance at ambient temperature was ranked as Si3N4/(W,Ti)C/Ni > monolithic Si3N4 > Si3N4/(W,Ti)C. As the temperature increased to 800 °C, the flexural strength of all samples only decreased slightly, which indicated Si3N4-based ceramic tool materials had good thermal stability. The subcritical crack growth parameter N of monolithic Si3N4 and Si3N4/(W,Ti)C ceramic tool materials did not change, while the value N of Si3N4/(W,Ti)C/Ni decreased by 76.5%. The addition of metal phase can increase the ambient temperature fatigue resistance, while it is detrimental to the high-temperature fatigue resistance due to its weak strength at high temperature. Additionally, defect source caused by the oxidative corrosion was also not conducive to fatigue resistance performance of Si3N4-based composite ceramic tool materials at high temperature.
Optimization of Microstructure to Improve Si3n4 Ceramics with Thermal Conductivity and Mechanical Properties: Effect of Si and Α-Si3n4 Powder Composition

Abstract:The heat dissipation capacity and mechanical reliability of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic substrates determine the service life of power devices. In this work, a two-step sintering method was designed to produce Si3N4 ceramics with excellent performance using Si and α-Si3N4 powders with different ratios as raw materials. The nitridation mechanism and the microstructural evolution mechanism were clarified. The in-situ-generated β-Si3N4 seeds regulated the microstructure of the post-sintered Si3N4 ceramics. The introduction of Si powder reduced the content of oxygen impurities and regulated the microstructure of Si3N4 ceramics, thereby improving thermal conductivity while maintaining excellent mechanical properties. When the mass ratio of Si powder nitridation to α-Si3N4 was 0.75, its thermal conductivity was 120W·m-1·K-1, fracture toughness was 11.92±0.36MPa·m1/2, and bending strength was 712±20.6MPa. This study provides a strategy to reduce the introduction of oxygen impurities while optimizing the microstructure to prepare Si3N4 ceramics with excellent performance.
Oxidation Kinetics and Its Impact on the Strength of Carbon Short Fiber Reinforced C/SiC Ceramics

Abstract:Abstract Because of the excellent fracture toughness and oxidation resistance, carbon short fiber reinforced ceramics have a sound potential for a variety of high‐temperature applications. For the composite's reliable use in long‐term applications, however, the oxidation effects on the mechanical strength are of crucial interest and have hitherto not been investigated in detail yet. In this study, the weight change of carbon short fiber reinforced C/SiC composites with carbon fiber lengths of 9 mm (long cut fiber composite – LCFC) and 2 mm (short milled fiber composite – SMFC), respectively, are evaluated in the temperature range from 500 to 1200 °C for two different fiber orientations. Both types of composites were additionally tested in bending mode after 25 and 50 min of exposure to air at 700 °C depending on fiber orientation. After 3 h of exposure at 1000 °C, a total weight loss of up to 37% for LCFC and 47% for SMFC could be determined. The bending test carried out after 50 min exposure at 700 °C showed a dramatic decrease down to 50% of the initial flexural strength for LCFC samples with fibers orientated in parallel to the beam axis. The smallest strength decrease of around 13% was found for SMFC samples with fibers orientated perpendicularly to the beam axis. Microstructural investigations suggest strongly that oxidation along the fibers is the most dominating weakening mechanism and is therefore directly affected by the fiber orientation and length.

Abstract:Abstract Laboratory based experiments to assess the “damage tolerance” of any new material system are a pre-requisite to engineering design, especially for aerospace components. In the case of CMCs, macro-scale specimens are preferred containing representative fibre-matrix architectures that support the definition of mechanical properties under service representative stress states. The combination of complex internal structure and inevitable processing artefacts within CMCs provides numerous sites for damage initiation. Damage then progresses in an inhomogeneous manner prior to ultimate failure at some critical location. Traditional techniques employed for strain measurement (extensometry/strain gauges) prove to be ineffective tools when testing these advanced composites. More complex characterization is essential in order to assess the localised response of the material. Advanced techniques, specifically digital image correlation and acoustic emission, have been applied to the evaluation of an CVI/MI silicon carbide reinforced/silicon carbide CMC tested at the elevated temperature of 800°C under fatigue loading. The spatial and temporal indications of damage were correlated to the observable forms of damage initiation and progression. Ancillary use of an in-situ SEM loading stage provided insight into the crack opening and closing mechanisms active within this material when under cyclic stress.
High‐temperature behavior and self‐enhancing mechanisms of oxide‐bonded SiC porous ceramics

Abstract:➢ Oxide‐bonded SiC porous ceramics (SCPCs) exhibit commendable high‐temperature self‐enhancing behavior. ➢ The neck region providing strength in SCPCs can be divided into four layers along the depth direction: silicate glass, oxygen‐contain, silicon‐rich, and SiC region. ➢ The synergistic effects of viscoelastic transition, phase transformation, and compressive stress in the neck region collectively contribute to the high‐temperature self‐enhancing properties. Oxide‐bonded SiC porous ceramics (SCPCs), synthesized via reaction bonding, exhibit significant potential for high‐temperature applications. However, incorporating sintering aids inevitably results in a considerable quantity of amorphous glass phase within SCPCs, thereby introducing risks to their high‐temperature mechanical performance. In this study, we employ in‐situ characterization techniques to investigate the high‐temperature behavior of SCPCs. Our findings reveal that SCPCs demonstrate remarkable high‐temperature self‐enhancing properties, with a critical bending strength at 800°C. Beyond this temperature, the strength declines sharply. Intriguingly, the critical bending strength is 36.6% greater than at ambient temperature. Moreover, elevated temperatures enhance the elastic modulus and promote the transition of SCPCs from multilinear to nonelastic fracture. The neck phase, which imparts strength to the SCPCs, is composed of four distinct layers along the depth direction: silicate glass, oxygen‐containing, silicon‐rich, and SiC region, as revealed by FIB‐TEM. The transformation from α to β‐cristobalite in the oxygen‐containing region improves the thermal expansion match with SiC, thereby mitigating local stress concentration. Furthermore, the compressive stress within the neck region intensifies with increasing temperatures, thereby inhibiting crack propagation. This work provides a basis for the high‐temperature applications of SCPCs.

Abstract:Ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) composites are widely used in high-temperature environments in aerospace applications. They experience extremely complex environmental conditions during service, including thermal, mechanical and chemical loading. Therefore, it is critical to evaluate the mechanical properties of UHTCs subject to an environment with elevated temperature, mechanical stress and oxygen. In this paper, an experimental investigation of the uniaxial tensile properties of a ZrB2-SiC-graphite subject to an environment with a simultaneously elevated temperature, mechanical stress and oxygen is conducted based on a high-temperature mechanical testing system. To improve efficiency, an orthogonal experimental design is used. It is suggested that the temperature has the most important effect on the properties, and the oxidation time and stress have an almost equal effect. Finally, the fracture morphology is characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the mechanism is investigated. It was concluded that the main fracture mode involved graphite flakes pulling out of the matrix and crystalline fracture, which indicates the presence of a weak interface in the composites.

Abstract:Evaluation of the mechanical properties at ultra-high temperatures for ceramic composites is necessary and important for the safety of designing the ceramic components. In this work, a new and novel test method named as local ultra-high temperature together with applied load method (LUHTAL), was developed to determine the tensile, compressive, bending strength and fracture toughness of ceramic composites. The four point bending load was conducted to measure the bending strength and fracture toughness of ceramic composites after the center of the sample was heated up to about 1500-2000°C by oxygen-assisted spray combustion. To check the availability and reliability for this method, typical ceramic materials including ZrB2/SiC and C/SiC fiber reinforced composite coated with Si, were used as the testing samples. It is indicated that this method is good and feasible for evaluating the mechanical properties of the ceramic composite at ultra-high temperatures in air.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of an ultrahigh temperature ceramic (UHTC) made up of ZrB2, SiC and graphite flake (ZrB2-SiC-G) are explored by ultrahigh-temperature uniaxial tension, combined with in-situ monitoring of the fracture behavior. The results suggest an inconsistent property degradation of ZrB2-SiC-G at 1200–2000 °C. Significant degradation in tensile modulus is observed at 1400 °C, which differs from the strength degradation that mainly occurs at 1800 °C. Moreover, ZrB2-SiC-G is elastically fractured at 1200 °C, 1400 °C and 1600 °C, which is interrupted at 1800 °C and 2000 °C. At the temperature range, severe plasticity takes place, which reduces the bearing capacity of this material. The brittle-to-ductile transition is well ascertained by in-situ observation of the fracture behavior at 1200–2000 °C. Finally, the constitutive relation of modulus and strength is built by coupling the effect of temperature. It can be integrated in finite element models and is useful for structural design of UHTC based thermal protection systems of hypersonic vehicles.

Abstract:Abstract The high-temperature tensile properties and stress-strain behavior of a 3D SiC/SiC composites prepared by the PIP method were investigated. Based on the FESEM analysis of the fracture morphology, the tensile failure mechanism of the composite at elevated temperature was discussed. The results show that the tensile strength of SiC/SiC composites showed a significant decline for specimens from a room temperature value of 482.5 MPa, to 167 MPa and 138 MPa at 1100 °C and 1300 °C, respectively. The toughening mechanism of composites at 1100 °C, including interface debonding, long pull-out fibers, and fracture mirror characteristics, is consistent with the pseudo-plastic fracture behavior implicated in the stress-strain curve. As a result of more significant oxidation, the fracture morphology of the specimen tested at 1300 °C was characterized by the signs including fiber-to-fiber bonding, larger size glassy phase, and shorter fiber pull-out length.
High-Temperature Fatigue Degradation Behaviors of a 3D Braided C/SiC with a Thin Interlayer in Different Dry Oxygen Atmospheres

Abstract:In order to evaluate the increase in the flexural strength of a 3D braided C/SiC composite comprised with a thin pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interlayer (TI C/SiC) under a load of 60 MPa with an amplitude of ±20 MPa at an oxygen partial pressure of 8000 Pa, the effect of temperature, oxidation and stress value on the length change in the sample, fracture behavior, residual flexural strength and fracture morphology were studied up to 1500 °C. It was found that the gauge length change behaviors of the material are related to (i) the positive damage of the thin interlayer and (ii) to the negative damage of the C phase. The most serious damage of TI C/SiC under 60 ± 20 MPa occurs in an oxygen partial pressure of 17,000 Pa at 1300 °C. When the oxygen partial pressure and/or the temperature are reduced, the positive C phase damage is relieved. In the case that the oxygen partial pressure, temperature and stress increase, the negative C phase damage is facilitated. The oxidation mechanism of the C phase is controlled by the inward diffusion of oxygen from the sample surface to the center; however, a higher stress is considered to change the oxygen diffusion mechanism by increasing the reaction of the C phase, with oxygen causing a widening of microcracks.

Abstract:Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are the preferred materials for solving advanced aerospace high-temperature structural components; it has the comprehensive advantages of higher temperature (~1500˚C) and low density. In service environments, CMCs exhibit complex damage mechanisms and failure modes, which are affected by constituent materials, meso-architecture and inhere defects. In this paper, the in-plane tensile mechanical behavior of a plain-woven SiCf/SiC composite at room and elevated temperatures was investigated, and the factors affecting the tensile strength of the material were discussed in depth. The results show that the tensile modulus and strength of SiCf/SiC composites at high temperature are lower, but the fracture strain increases and the toughness of the composites is enhanced; the stitching holes significantly weaken the tensile strength of the material, resulting in the material is easy to break at the cross-section with stitching holes.

Abstract:Silicon carbide fiber‐reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiCf/SiC CMCs) based on a domestic KD‐SA SiC fiber were exposed to a wet oxygen atmosphere for 135 h at 800, 1100, and 1300°C. The evolution of the microstructure and mechanical properties of SiCf/SiC CMCs have been systematically investigated following oxidation. For weight change, CMC‐1300 showed the greatest gain (0.394%), followed by CMC‐1100 (0.356%) and CMC‐800 (0.149%). The volatilization of boron oxide (B2O3) combined with the slight oxidation of the SiC matrix at 800°C caused crack deflection and fiber pull‐out. The complete dissipation of the interphase could be found when the oxidation temperature increases to 1100°C, generated a fracture surface with brittle fracture characteristics. At 1300°C, crystalline SiO2 hindered oxygen diffusion, with evidence of fiber pull‐out. Based on thermodynamic calculations and microscopic observations, we propose a mechanism to explain the thermal degradation of SiCf/SiC CMCs. This work offers valuable guidance for the fabrication of SiCf/SiC CMCs that are suitable for high‐temperature applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the fatigue life of 2D woven ceramic-matrix composites, i.e., SiC/SiC, SiC/Si-N-C, SiC/Si-B4C, and Nextel 610™/Aluminosilicate, at room and elevated temperatures has been predicted using the micromechanics approach. An effective coefficient of the fiber volume fraction along the loading direction (ECFL) was introduced to describe the fiber architecture of preforms. The Budiansky-Hutchinson-Evans shear-lag model was used to describe the microstress field of the damaged composite considering fibers failure. The statistical matrix multicracking model and fracture mechanics interface debonding criterion were used to determine the matrix crack spacing and interface debonded length. The interface shear stress and fibers strength degradation model and oxidation region propagation model have been adopted to analyze the fatigue and oxidation effects on fatigue life of the composite, which is controlled by interface frictional slip and diffusion of oxygen gas through matrix multicrackings. Under cyclic fatigue loading, the fibers broken fraction was determined by combining the interface/fiber oxidation model, interface wear model and fibers statistical failure model at elevated temperatures, based on the assumption that the fiber strength is subjected to two-parameter Weibull distribution and the load carried by broken and intact fibers satisfy the Global Load Sharing (GLS) criterion. When the broken fibers fraction approaches to the critical value, the composites fatigue fractures. The fatigue life S-N curves of 2D SiC/SiC, SiC/Si-N-C, SiC/Si-B4C, and Nextel 610™/Aluminosilicate composites at room temperature and 800, 1000 and 1200 °C in air and steam have been predicted.

Abstract:Pre-oxidation is an effective method to eliminate machining damages and to improve mechanical properties. In this paper, ZrB2–30vol% SiC ceramic was pre-oxidized at 800–1200°C. The effect of pre-oxidation temperature on flexural strength was studied. The flexural strength of ZrB2–SiC ceramic was significantly improved after pre-oxidation treatment, and it was found that the ceramic had the highest flexural strength after pre-oxidation at 1000°C. Besides, the residual stress state of ZrB2–SiC ceramic after pre-oxidation treatment was also investigated using indentation and nanoindentation methods. Pre-oxidation can generate different residual stress states in the oxidation layer and ceramic matrix. When the ZrB2–SiC ceramic was pre-oxidized at 1000°C, the oxidation layer had the highest residual tensile stress and the ceramic matrix had the corresponding highest compressive stress, which was believed to be helpful for inhibiting crack propagation and improving mechanical properties.
Effects of microstructures on the fracture properties of silicon nitride ceramics at elevated temperatures

Abstract:Ceramic components often fail by a brittle fracture mode during the service process. Various factors can affect the fracture properties of ceramics. Experimental methods are usually used to investigate fracture behaviors. However, they give a composite result and the contribution to fracture from each factor is not clear. In the present work, a micromechanical model is developed to quantitatively characterize the fracture properties of ceramics at elevated temperatures. The control method for the microstructures of ceramics is proposed based on the Voronoi diagram. The temperature‐dependent surface energy model of ceramics is revised by considering the effects of thermal decomposition and phase transformation. The interface energies at different temperatures are obtained by the inversion method. The criterion for crack propagation of ceramics at elevated temperatures is developed based on the G‐criterion. The effects of temperature, grain size, grain size distribution, and grain boundary phase thickness on the fracture behaviors of silicon nitride are studied numerically.

Hot strength and microstructure of β-sialon-Al2O3-SiC composites

Abstract:Microstructures and relationships between MOR (modulus of rupture) of β-sialon-Al2O3-SiC composites and temperatures were studied. The results show that MOR of β-sialon-Al2O3-SiC composites goes up depending on increases of temperatures, and reaches the maximum value at 1200°C, and goes down slowly when the temperature is over 1200°C. This is attributed to the enhancing mechanism of decreasing of residual thermal stresses in the composites at high temperatures and protecting functions of oxidation films on the surface of specimens. Study on the microstructure of fracture surface of specimens reveals that the bonding strength between β-sialon and SiC in the composites is excellent. The intragranular fracture of SiC grains and corundum grains is dominant in some specimens. Others, micro-cracks and gaps between corundum grains and the matrix at lower temperatures can be closed by the heat expansion of corundum grains at higher temperatures, and can improve MOR of specimens at high temperatures. The fracturing style of corundum grains changes from intergranular fracture at lower temperatures to intragranular fracture at higher temperatures. Having exhibited the high compressive strength of 46 MPa to 57 MPa at 1400°C, the β-sialon-Al2O3-SiC composites deserve to be new promising advanced refractories.
Advanced Fabrication Method and Mechanical Properties of Silicon Nitride/Boron Nitride Fibrous Monolithic Ceramics

Abstract:Silicon nitride ceramics are regarded as a promising material for high-temperature structural applications due to their remarkable characteristics, including high strength, hardness, thermal conductivity, low dielectric properties, and resistance to creep at elevated temperatures. However, their susceptibility to catastrophic fracture at high temperatures remains a concern. Herein, Si3N4/BN fibrous monolithic ceramics have been successfully prepared by employing wet-spinning and hot-pressing techniques. We delved into the design and optimization of the spinning slurry and examined how the Si3N4/BN fiber diameter affects the ceramics' microstructure and mechanical properties. The spinning slurry exhibited exceptional stability and spinnability. Decreasing the fiber diameter contributed to material densification and improved mechanical properties. Notably, when the fiber diameter is 0.9 mm, the fabricated Si3N4/BN fibrous monolithic ceramics demonstrate a carbon content of 0.82%, a three-point bending strength of 357 ± 24 MPa, and a fracture toughness of 8.8 ± 0.36 MPa·m1/2. This investigation offers valuable insights into producing high-performance Si3N4/BN composite ceramics utilizing hot-pressing technology.

Abstract:The high-temperature mechanical properties were very important to structural materials, especially structural ceramics. Hence, the strength, elastic modulus, stress relaxation and creep behavior of the multilayer materials at elevated temperature were studied in this paper. According to the curves of mechanical properties varieties with temperature risen from room-temperature to 1300°C, the multilayer materials could remain relatively high mechanical properties until 1150°C. Otherwise, the creep function of the multilayer composites was also determined, in which the stress exponent was 1.4 and activation energy was 204kJ/mol. By contrasting to the monolithic ceramics of Al2O3 and Ti3SiC2, the main creep mechanisms include: interface diffusion creep (in Al2O3 layers), dislocation movement creep, grain delamination and sliding (in Ti3SiC2 layers).
