Abstract:Simultaneous measurements of Raman scattering and photoluminescence (PL) prove to be a powerful method for quantifying the bundling states of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT). This paper presents physical analysis and experimental evidence to establish that the G-band normalized photoluminescence, which is determined from the simultaneously acquired Raman scattering and PL emission spectra, can serve as a good indicator for quantifying the degree of exfoliation of SWCNT dispersions. Without introducing the complications of sampling geometry and instrumental correction, this indicator directly relates to the intrinsic physical properties of a given SWCNT sample, namely, the absorption cross-section, differential Raman scattering cross-section, and PL quantum yield of SWCNT. An inverse linear relationship between the G-band normalized 267cm−1 RBM intensity and the PL emission intensities for SWCNT dispersions with different degrees of exfoliation was experimentally observed, indicating this can be used for quantitative characterization of the degree of exfoliation for a given SWCNT sample. An in-depth analysis of the indicators of the degree of exfoliation in various as-sonicated SWCNT dispersions highlights a two-stage exfoliation mechanism of SWCNT bundles under sonication.

Abstract: The electronic Raman scattering (ERS) features of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can reveal a wealth of information about their electronic structures, but have previously been thought to appear exclusively in metallic (M-) but not in semiconducting (S-) SWNTs. We report the experimental observation of the ERS features with an accuracy of 1 meV in suspended S-SWNTs, the processes of which are accomplished via the available high-energy electron-hole pairs. The ERS features can facilitate further systematic studies on the properties of SWNT, both metallic and semiconducting, with defined chirality.
Combination of Confocal Raman Spectroscopy and Electron Microscopy on the Same Individual Bundles of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:We report a method to investigate the same individual single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundles with both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. Free-standing individual bundles are obtained by depositing a solution of suspend SWNTs on a carbon film with a regular pattern of holes, which can be localized by TEM and also by confocal Raman microscopy. While most of the TEM images predict that the bundles consist of tubes with a similar diameter, we will show that occasionally a certain tube diameter can be associated with a particular radial breathing mode frequency of the Raman spectrum.

Abstract:We show that the Schottky barrier at the metal-single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) contact can be clearly observed in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images as a bright contrast segment with length up to micrometers due to the space charge distribution in the depletion region. The lengths of the charge depletion increase with the diameters of semiconducting SWCNTs (s-SWCNTs) when connected to one metal electrode, which enables direct and efficient evaluation of the bandgap distributions of s-SWCNTs. Moreover, this approach can also be applied for a wide variety of semiconducting nanomaterials, adding a new function to conventional SEM.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are characteristic one-dimensional nanomaterials, with length as their defining feature. However, the exploration of length-dependent properties in semiconducting-SWCNTs ( s -SWCNTs) has hitherto been underexplored, primarily due to the absence of precise preparation technologies to obtain s -SWCNTs with both controlled length and narrow length distribution. Here, we introduced a novel approach based on electrochemical shortening and selective adsorption, offering control over the SWCNTs' length and their distributions. This methodology is compatible with high-purity SWCNTs sorting techniques. We have conducted detailed length statistics and comparisons of the truncation results of SWCNTs with different diameters. Experimental results demonstrate that smaller-diameter SWCNTs s are more prone to truncation, resulting in shorter lengths. Remarkably, we observed a length-dependent fluorescence enhancement when the length of s -SWCNTs was reduced to less than 120 nm, akin to the behavior of carbon dots or conjugated polymers. This research paves the way for exploring more length-dependent properties and length-related applications of s -SWCNTs.

Superlong-oriented Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Arrays on Substrate with Low Percentage of Metallic Structure

Abstract:We report in this paper a convenient and effective method to identify the structures of superlong well-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) via the combination of electrodeposition of Ag particles on the SWNTs with Raman spectroscopy. The suitable density and the visibility of the Ag-deposited long nanotubes make it possible to acquire Raman spectra from isolated individual long nanotubes very easily. The results reveal that the superlong well-oriented SWNT arrays on SiO2/Si wafer fabricated by EtOH-CVD using Fe/Mo nanoparticles as catalyst exhibit a lower percentage of metallic SWNTs (m-SWNTs) (similar to 5%). Among other SWNTs, similar to 62% are semiconducting SWNTs (s-SWNTs) and similar to 32% are so-called quasi-insulators, which are believed to be caused inevitably by the defects during growth process. Small amount of nanotubes are so-called quasi-metallic. Furthermore, the structural uniformity of the long SWNTs can be also evaluated by the deposition of Ag along the length and Raman spectroscopy. Besides, on the basis of the in situ laser irradiation on individual SWNTs, it was found that s-SWNT is more stable than m-SWNT. The m-SWNT can be changed to s-SWNT under laser beam with an appropriate conditions, providing a facile method to generate alternative m- and s-SWNT multiple junction on one individual long SWNT, which may have special electrical properties and potential applications in nanoelectronics.
Raman Spectral Measuring of the Growth Rate of Individual Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:We report, herein, a rational approach to measure the growth rate of individual SWNTs. Intramolecular junctions could be produced controllably by temperature-mediated chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and used as a Raman-identifiable mark to confirm the starting and finishing position of a SWNT. Thus, the growth rate of SWNTs could be calculated by nu = L-CNT/t, where nu is the growth rate, L is the length of the segment, and t is its growth time. The results show that the growth rates of SWNTs growing at 950 degrees C are higher than those at 900 degrees C, and the growth rate at 950 or 900 degrees C decreases with the passage of time. We believe this approach provides an easy way to measure the growth rate of an individual SWNT and that it is a good starting point to study the growth behavior of SWNTs and for constructing SWNT-based device.

Abstract:With recent improvements in carbon nanotube separation methods, the accurate determination of residual metallic carbon nanotubes in a purified nanotube sample is important, particularly for those interested in using semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in electronic device applications such as thin-film transistors (TFTs). This work demonstrates that Raman microscopy mapping is a powerful characterization tool for quantifying residual metallic carbon nanotubes present in highly enriched semiconducting nanotube networks. Raman mapping correlates well with absorption spectroscopy, yet it provides greater differentiation in purity. Electrical data from TFTs with channel lengths of 2.5 and 5 µm demonstrate the utility of the method. By comparing samples with nominal purities of 99.0% and 99.8%, a clear differentiation can be made when evaluating the current on/off ratio as a function of channel length, and thus the Raman mapping method provides a means to guide device fabrication by correlating SWCNT network density and purity with TFT channel scaling.

Abstract:Investigating the electric field distribution around individual metallic nanoparticles is of significant importance for the understanding of the electromagnetic (EM) mechanism of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We report single gold-nanoparticle-enhanced Raman scattering of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by atomic force microscope (AFM) manipulation. The distance between the gold nanoparticle (GNP) and the SWNT can be controlled by pushing the GNP with an AFM tip. The Raman signals increase when a single GNP is moved close to an individual SWNT, and the corresponding polarization dependence to the incident laser excitation at each GNP/SWNT distance is studied. The agreement of the experimental results with the theoretical model described in this paper suggests a rational modification of the EM enhancement model of SERS for one-dimensional "molecules", like nanotubes.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a method to estimate the average length of bundles in a randomly oriented network of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by analyzing the dependence of its sheet resistance on the distance between contacts. We propose an analytical model to verify the method and find the model's limitations using Monte Carlo simulations. Then, we apply the proposed approach to experimental results acquired from 95% (at 550 nm wavelength) transparent SWCNT films. The proposed method to estimate the average SWCNT bundle length can be used in situ and does not require any specific sample preparation step that can distort the SWCNT network.

Abstract:A straightforward and high‐efficiency method is developed for length separation of single‐wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The long SWCNTs can spontaneously precipitate for binary‐surfactant system, which is attributed to the formation of compound micelles by binary surfactants that squeeze the free space of long SWCNTs. This technique is perfectly compatible with various surfactant‐based methods for structure separations of SWCNTs. High‐efficiency extraction of long single‐wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with excellent optoelectronic properties from SWCNT solution is critical for enabling their application in high‐performance optoelectronic devices. Here, a straightforward and high‐efficiency method is reported for length separation of SWCNTs by modulating the concentrations of binary surfactants. The results demonstrate that long SWCNTs can spontaneously precipitate for binary‐surfactant but not for single‐surfactant systems. This effect is attributed to the formation of compound micelles by binary surfactants that squeeze the free space of long SWCNTs due to their large excluded volumes. With this technique, it can readily separate near‐pure long (≥500 nm in length, 99% in content) and short (≤500 nm in length, 98% in content) SWCNTs with separation efficiencies of 26% and 64%, respectively, exhibiting markedly greater length resolution and separation efficiency than those of previously reported methods. Thin‐film transistors fabricated from extracted semiconducting SWCNTs with lengths >500 nm exhibit significantly improved electrical properties, including a 10.5‐fold on‐state current and 14.7‐fold mobility, compared with those with lengths <500 nm. The present length separation technique is perfectly compatible with various surfactant‐based methods for structure separations of SWCNTs and is significant for fabrication of high‐performance electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Length-dependent Raman spectroscopy of single-walled carbon nanotubes: the effect of dispersant on defects

Abstract:We compare Raman spectra from aqueous suspensions of length-separated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) dispersed using either polymer adsorption of single-stranded DNA or miscelle encapsulation with sodium deoxycholate surfactant. The Raman spectral features, other than the D-band, increase monotonically with nanotube length in both dispersion schemes. The intensity ratio of the disorder-induced D to G' Raman bands decays as a function of SWCNT length, proportional to 1/L, as expected for endcap defects. While the UV-vis absorption and fluorescence also increase with length for both dispersants, the fluorescence intensity is dramatically lower for DNA-wrapped SWCNTs of equal length. The similarities in the length-dependent D/G' ratios exclude defects as an explanation for the fluorescence decrease in DNA versus deoxycholate dispersions.

Energy Gaps, Electronic Structures, and X-Ray Spectroscopies of Finite Semiconductor Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:We report hybrid density functional theory calculations for electronic structures of hydrogen-terminated finite single-walled carbon nanotubes (6,5) and (8,3) up to 100nm in length. Gap states that are mainly arisen from the hydrogen-terminated edges have been found in (8,3) tubes, but their contributions to the density of states become invisible when the tube is longer than 10nm. The electronic structures of (6,5) and (8,3) tubes are found to be converged around 20nm. The calculated band-gap energies of 100nm long nanotubes are in good agreement with experimental results. The valence band structures of (6,5), (8,3), as well as (5,5) tubes are also investigated by means of ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS), x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra theoretically. The UPS, XES and RIXS spectra become converged already at 10nm. The length-dependent oscillation behavior is found in the RIXS spectra of (5,5) tubes, indicating that the RIXS spectra may be used to determine the size and length of metallic nanotubes. Furthermore, the chiral dependence observed in the simulated RIXS spectra suggests that RIXS spectra could be a useful technique for the determination of chirality of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) plays an indispensable role in nanoscience and nanotechnology because of its high efficiency and high spatial resolution in characterizing nanomaterials. Recent progress indicates that the contrast arising from different conductivities or bandgaps can be observed in SEM images if single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are placed on a substrate. In this study, we use SWCNTs on different substrates as model systems to perform SEM imaging of nanomaterials. Substantial SEM observations are conducted at both high and low acceleration voltages, leading to a comprehensive understanding of the effects of the imaging parameters and substrates on the material and surface-charge signals, as well as the SEM imaging. This unified picture of SEM imaging not only furthers our understanding of SEM images of SWCNTs on a variety of substrates but also provides a basis for developing new imaging recipes for other important nanomaterials used in nanoelectronics and nanophotonics.

Abstract:Although it is known that the Raman spectroscopic signature of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is highly chirality dependent, using Raman spectroscopy with several laser excitations as a tool for quantifying fraction of either metallic or semiconducting nanotubes in a sample has become a widely used analytical method. In this work, using the electron diffraction technique as a basis, we have examined the validity of Raman spectroscopy for quantitative evaluation of metallic fractions (M%) in single-walled carbon nanotube samples. Our results show that quantitative Raman spectroscopic evaluations of M% by using several discrete laser lines, either by using integrated intensities of chirality-associated radial breathing modes (RBMs) or, as has been more commonly utilized in recent studies, by statistically counting the numbers of RBMs can be misrepresentative. Specifically, we have found that the occurrence numbers of certain types of RBMs in Raman spectral mapping depend critically on the diameter distribution, resonant coupling between transition energies and excitation laser energy, and the chirality-dependent Raman scattering cross sections rather than simply on the metallic and semiconducting SWCNT fractions. These dependencies are similar to those observed in the integrated intensities of RBMs. Our findings substantially advance the understanding of the proper use of Raman spectroscopy for carbon nanotube quantification, which is important for carbon nanotube characterization and crucial to guide research in SWCNT growth and their applications.

Abstract:Semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are a leading candidate to replace or supplement silicon in future generation chip manufacturing. Because they are produced as structural mixtures with varied electronic properties, SWCNTs must first be carefully sorted and purified. This requires new metrology tools that can reliably measure SWCNT sample compositions to guide sorting processes and confirm product purity. We describe here a novel, self-calibrating optical instrument designed for advanced characterization of SWCNT samples. This desktop system will quickly, sensitively, and non-destructively quantify the concentrations of multiple SWCNT (n,m) species. The key advance is adding variance spectroscopy to rapid excitation-emission fluorimetry. Variance spectroscopy is a recently developed method that can determine absolute concentrations of nanoparticles by analyzing statistical variations in the fluorescence signals from small volumes of dilute samples. Measurements are made by a small accessory module linked to a standard NanoSpectralyzer. It will automatically acquire and analyze variance spectra to find the sensitivity calibration factors needed to convert raw fluorescence intensities into actual concentrations of the different SWCNT species. Those measured calibration factors are valid for subsequent samples with similar processing histories, allowing rapid quantitation from quick excitation-emission scans. We expect that this analytical capability will support advances in basic carbon nanotube science and applications.

Abstract:The ability to determine the precise structure of nano-objects is essential for a multitude of applications. This is particularly true of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which are produced as heterogeneous samples. Current techniques used for their characterization require sophisticated instrumentation, such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), or a compromise on accuracy. In this paper, we propose to use super-resolution microscopy (SRM) to accurately determine the morphology (orientation, length and shape) of individual luminescent SWCNTs. We generate super-resolved images using three recently published SRM analytical software packages (DPR, eSRRF and MSSR) and metrologically compare their performance to determine the morphological properties of SWCNTs. For this, ground-truth information on nanotube morphologies were obtained using polarization measurements and AFM to directly correlate the results from SRM at the single particle level. We show a more than 4-fold improvement in resolution over standard photoluminescence imaging, revealing hidden morphologies as efficiently as AFM. We finally demonstrate that DPR, and eventually eSRRF can effectively assess SWCNT length distribution in a much faster and more accessible way than AFM. We believe that this approach can be generalized to other types of luminescent nanostructures and thus become a new standard for rapid and accurate characterization of samples.
