Abstract:In this chapter we shall look at a larger range of “algebraic” texts - in part occupying entire tablets, in part single problems drawn from longer compositions, but in all cases texts which permit us to see new facets of Old Babylonian “algebraic” thought.

Abstract:Through a broad structural analysis and a close reading of Old Babylonian mathematica] "procedure texts" dealing mainly with problems of the second degree it is shown that Old Babylonian "algebra" was neither a "rhetorical algebra" dealing with numbers and arithmetical relations between numbers nor built on a set of fixed algorithmic procedures. Instead, the texts must be read as "naive" prescriptions for geometric analysis—naive in the sense that the results are seen by immediate intuition to be correct, but the question of correctness never raised—dealing with measured or measurable but unknown line segments, and making use of a set of operations and techniques different in structure from that of arithmetical algebra. The investigation involves a thorough discussion and re-interpretation of the technical terminology of Old Babylonian mathematics, elucidates many terms and procedures which have up to now been enigmatic, and makes many features stand out which had not been noticed before. The second-last chapter discusses the metamathematical problem, whether and to which extent we are then entitled to speak of an Old Babylonian algebra ; it also takes up the over-all implications of the investigation for the understanding of Old Babylonian patterns of thought. It is argued that these are not mythopoeic in the sense of H. and H. A. Frankfort, nor savage or cold in a Lévi-Straussian sense, nor however as abstract and modern as current interpretations of the mathematical texts would have them to be. The last chapter investigates briefly the further development of Babylonian "algebra" through the Seleucid era, demonstrating a clear arithmetization of the patterns of mathematical thought, the possible role of Babylonian geometrical analysis as inspiration for early Greek geometry, and the legacy of Babylonian "algebraic" thought to Medieval Islamic algebra.

Abstract:Eine Reihe von mittelalterlichen Schriften zur Landmessung (vom 9. islamischen Jahrhundert bis zu Fibonacci und Pacioli) enthält eine besondere Art von „algebraischen” Aufgaben. Darin werden z.B. die Summe der Fläche und einer oder alle vier Seiten eines Quadrates beschrieben und nach der Seite gefragt. Es zeigt sich erstens, daß dieser Aufgabentyp mindestens seit dem frühesten 2. vorchristlichen Jahrtausend von geometrischen Praktikern tradiert wurde, und zweitens, daß er die Entwicklung einer „Algebra” in der altbabylonischen Schreiberschule inspirierte.

Abstract:In an extensive paper published due to the kindness of the editorial staff of the present journal, I have suggested a geometrical reinterpretation of so-called Old Babylonian "algebra".1 Among the texts analyzed in the paper were the mathematical texts No. XVI and No. IX from Susa, which turned out to contain highly illuminating didactical commentaries of a kind not known from the Babylonian core area be it because teaching in a peripheral area felt a need to make explicit what could be left to a stable oral tradition in the core, or simply because the Susa teachers had a bent for loquacity. Text No. XVI turned out not to contain solutions of problems but only a didactical discussion of transformations of linear "equations" of two unknowns (as usually, the us ("length") and ("width") of a rectangle, with the usual values 30' and 20' [nindan]2 ) . No. IX contained initial didactical discussions of the transformations of complex into simpler second-degree "equations" followed by use of the technique just taught for the solution of a sophisticated set of equations. These texts are not the only Susa texts to contain illuminating didactical commentaries. In the present paper I shall analyze two further texts, of which one contains an explicit explanatory part, while the other employs some of the concepts introduced in the former. Abstract:For more than a century, there has been some discussion about whether medieval Arabic al-jabr (and hence also later European algebra) has its roots in Indian or Greek mathematics. Since the 1930s, the possibility of Babylonian ultimate roots has entered the debate. This article presents a new approach to the problem, pointing to a set of quasi-algebraic riddles that appear to have circulated among Near Eastern practical geometers since c. 2000 BCE, and which inspired first the so-called “algebra” of the Old Babylonian scribal school and later the geometry of Elements II (where the techniques are submitted to theoretical investigation). The riddles also turn up in ancient Greek practical geometry and Jaina mathematics. Eventually they reached European (Latin and abbaco) mathematics via the Islamic world. However, no evidence supports a derivation of medieval Indian algebra or the original core of al-jabr from the riddles.

Abstract:The nineteenth century was an important period for both Oxford mathematics and algebra in general. While there is extensive documentation of mathematical research in Oxford at this time, the same cannot be said of the teaching. The content of the course presents a different picture: it shows what those who set it felt was most valuable for a young mathematician to learn, perhaps indicating what direction they expected mathematics to take in the future. To find out what undergraduates were taught, I have looked through examination papers of the years between 1828 and 1912 with a focus on algebra, as well as supporting material. In this paper I will present my findings. I will give a picture of what an Oxford undergraduate's course in algebra looked like by the end of the nineteenth century and discuss my own conclusions as to why it took such a form.

Abstract:Abstract Italian fourteenth- and fifteenth-century abbacus,algebra presents us with a number,of deviations from what,we,would,consider normal,(or proper) mathematical,behaviour: the invention,of completely,false algebraic rules for the solution of cubic and quartic equations, and of rules that pretend to be generally valid but in fact only hold in very special cases; and (in modern,terms) an attempt to expand,the multiplicative semi-group of non-negative,algebraic powers,into a complete,group,by treating roots as negative powers. In both cases, the authors of the fallacies must have known they were cheating. Certain abbacus writers seem to have discovered, however, that something was wrong, and devised alternative approaches to the cubics and quartics, and developed safeguards against the latter misconception. The paper analyses both phenomena, and correlates them with the general norm system,of abbacus,mathematics,as this can be extracted from the more,elementary,level of the abbacus,treatises. Contents
Textual materiality and abstraction in mathematics

Abstract:In this paper, we wish to explore the role that textual representations play in the creation of new mathematical objects. We do so by analyzing texts by Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736-1813) and Évariste Galois (1811-1832), which are seen as central to the historical development of the mathematical concept of groups. In our analysis, we consider how the material features of representations relate to the changes in conceptualization that we see in the texts.Against this backdrop, we discuss the idea that new mathematical concepts, in general, are increasingly abstract in the sense of being detached from material configurations. Our analysis supports the opposite view. We suggest that changes in the material aspects of textual representations (i.e., the actual graphic inscriptions) play an active and crucial role in conceptual change.We employ an analytical framework adapted from Bruno Latour's account of intertwined material and representational practices in the empirical sciences. This approach facilitates a foregrounding of the interconnection between the conceptual development of mathematics, and the construction, (re-)configuration, and manipulation of the materiality of representations. Our analysis suggests that, in mathematical practice, distinctions between the material and structural features of representations are not permanent and absolute. This problematizes the appropriateness of the distinction between concrete inscriptions and abstract relations in understanding the development of mathematical concepts.
Computational Techniques and Computational Aids in Ancient Mesopotamia

Abstract:Any history of mathematics that deals with Mesopotamian mathematics will mention the use of tables of reciprocals and multiplication in sexagesimal place-value notation-perhaps also of tables of squares and other higher arithmetical tables. Less likely there is a description of metrological lists and tables and of tables of technical constants. All of these belong to a complex of aids for accounting that was created during the "Ur III" period (twenty-first c. BCE). Students' exercises from the Old Babylonian period (2000-1600 BCE) teach us something about their use. First metrological lists then metrological tables were learned by heart. These allowed the translation of real measures into place-value measures in a tacitly assumed basic unit. At an advanced level, we see multiplications, where first two factors and then the product are written in sequence on a clay tablet for rough work. Problem texts show us more about the use of the metrological tables and the tables of technical constants. Neither genre allows us to see directly how additions and subtractions were made, nor how multiplications of multi-digit numbers were performed. A few errors in Old Babylonian problem texts confirm, however, that multiplications were performed on a support where partial products would disappear once they had been inserted-in a general sense, some kind of abacus. Other errors, some from Old Babylonian period and some others from the Seleucid period (third and second c. BCE), show that the "abacus" in question had four or five sexagesimal levels, and textual evidence reveals that it was called "the hand". This name was in use at least from the twenty-sixth c. BCE until c. 500 BCE. This regards addition and subtraction from early times onward, and multiplication and division in Ur III and later. A couple of problem texts from the third millennium deals with complicated divisions, namely divisions of large round numbers by 7 and by 33. They use different but related procedures, suggesting that no standard routine was at hand.
From Concrete to Abstract in Indian Mathematics

Abstract:Despite the extensive amount of scholarly work done on Indian mathematics in the last 200 years, the conditions under which it originated and evolved is still not clear. Often, one reads the ancient texts with the present concepts and methods in mind. The fact of absence of script over a long stretch of Indian history in ancient times also gets overlooked in such readings. The purpose of this article is to explore the journey of mathematics by examining what the ancient texts tell us about the nature of mathematics in their times. What one finds from the investigation of arithmetic, geometry and algebra is that while it was concrete and context bound, rooted in solving practical problems in ancient times, Indian mathematics transitioned to context free, abstract stage with the advent of algebra supported by writing.

Abstract:Undergraduate students of mathematics continue to solve equations in virtually any course they attend, just as they did in secondary school -- yet what do they learn about equations and their solutions at university? Are they capable to combine elements of abstract algebra and real analysis to assess what it means to solve an equation, in particular, what it means for an equation to be solvable -- or not? In this paper, we present a mathematical and didactical analysis of these questions, illustrated by examples from a capstone course for future Danish high school teachers.

Abstract:Since the 1950s, “Babylonian mathematics” has often served to open expositions of the general history of mathematics. Since it is written in a language and a script which only specialists understand, it has always been dealt with differently by the “insiders”, the Assyriologists who approached the texts where it manifests itself as philologists and historians of Mesopotamian culture, and by “outsiders”, historians of mathematics who had to rely on second-hand understanding of the material (actually, of as much of this material as they wanted to take into account), but who saw it as a constituent of the history of mathematics. The article deals with how these different approaches have looked in various periods: pre-decipherment speculations; the early period of deciphering, 1847–1929; the “golden decade”, 1929–1938, where workers with double competence (primarily Neugebauer and Thureau-Dangin ) attacked the corpus and demonstrated the Babylonians to have possessed unexpectedly sophisticated mathematical knowledge; and the ensuing four decades, where some mopping-up without change of perspective was all that was done by a handful of Assyriologists and Assyriologically competent historians of mathematics, while most Assyriologists lost interest completely, and historians of mathematics believed to possess the definitive truth about the topic in Neugebauer ’s popularizations.

We also examine certain Elamite structures, such as the canal systems serving Susa and a reservoir at the ziggurat of Chogha Zanbil, in whose construction geometry might well have played an important role.

Abstract:Procedures for extracting square roots written in Sanskrit in two treatises and their commentaries from the fifth to the twelfth centuries are explored with the help of Textology and Speech Act Theory. An analysis of the number and order of the steps presented in these texts is used to show that their aims were not limited to only describing how to carry out the algorithm. The intentions of authors of these Sanskrit mathematical texts are questioned by taking into account the expressivity of relationships established between the world and the text.1

Abstract:In the first volume of Elementary Mathematics from a Higher Standpoint: Arithmetic, Algebra and Analysis, Klein closely adheres to several principles which contribute a great deal to the understanding of Klein’s higher standpoint—such as the principle of mathematical interconnectedness, the principle of intuition, the principle of application-orientation, and the genetic method of teaching. In addition, Klein conveys not only a mathematical but also a historical and a didactical perspective, all of which broaden this standpoint. Linear Algebra and its Applications

Abstract:Algebra environments provide requisites for studying objects of interest in operator algebra theory, group representation theory, spin geometry, Clifford analysis, and several variable operator theory. The concept is analyzed by developing an algebraic geometry approach. Specific algebraic sets, called structure manifolds of algebra environments, and their Zariski tangent spaces are introduced and described by using as critical tools derivations on algebras. Structure manifolds of tensor environments in particular yield spaces of algebra homomorphisms. Consequently, such spaces could be investigated as algebraic manifolds. Related issues include characterizations of their Zariski tangent spaces and of derivations that preserve algebra homomorphisms.

Numerical Tables in Chinese Writings Devoted to Mathematics: From Early Imperial Manuscripts to Printed Song-Yuan Books

Abstract:This article establishes that the discursive parts of the earliest known mathematical manuscripts in Chinese were composed of (at least) two types of elements, marked by two types of texts. The manuscripts alternate continuous text, and text for numerical tables (what I call table-relations). I show that in these manuscripts, the latter were written down as ‘textual tables,’ and that two basic types of style were used for these textual tables. By contrast, tabular layouts have been used for a Qin period object and a Dunhuang manuscript carrying numerical tables. I suggest that these artifacts should be interpreted as computing tools. I further argue that, at least from the eleventh century onwards, diagrammatic tables were introduced into mathematical writings. They were used to write down new types of numerical tables. Diagrammatic features of such texts, like horizontal, vertical and oblique lines, played a key part in the reading, interpretation and use of these table-relations. In this sense, they can be compared with the Qin computing tool. I conclude that the fact that in Song-Yuan times these diagrammatic tables are referred to as ‘diagram tu 圖’ curiously echoes with the history of visual tools attested to in relation to mathematical activity in China.
