Abstract:The operating temperature of modified Nafion membranes remains too low to satisfy the requirements for hightemperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) because most can only operate well below 120 degrees C. In this article, we prepare a series of Nafion/SiO2 composite membranes with different contents of doped silica nanoparticles by in situ growth of SiO2 nanoparticles near the -SO3H group. The water dynamic change process and the functional properties of Nafion/SiO2 composite membranes are studied and found to correlate well with structural parameters, such as crystallinity and average chain spacing. Also, microstructure information including the phase separation structure changes, structural complexity, and ion cluster fraction of Nafion/ SiO2 composite membranes at different temperatures are investigated using synchrotron-based in situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Differing from expectations, the amount of water in the Nafion/SiO2 composite membranes may not be the decisive factor to maintain proton conductivity at relatively high temperatures. Instead, the complexity or connectivity of the proton transport channel may play a more important role in the effective proton transfer inside the composite membranes, which also provides valuable guidance and insight for the development of novel HT-PEM materials with well-designed ion transport pathways in the future.
Layered Double Hydroxide-Coated Silica Nanospheres with 3D Architecture-Modified Composite Anion Exchange Membranes for Fuel Cell Applications

Abstract:A flower-like hierarchical structure consisting of a hydroxide ion conductor (layered double hydroxide, LDH) wrapped on hydrophilic SiO 2 nanospheres (LDH@SiO 2 ) was first prepared by an in situ co-precipitation method and then quaternized. This resulting nanocomposite (QLDH@SiO 2 ) was used as a multifunctional additive to modify a quaternized chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (QCS/PVA) blend matrix to prepare composite membranes. The surface modification of LDH@SiO 2 with the silane coupling agent facilitates its dispersion within the blend matrix, which leads to the decreased degree of crystallinity and significant enhancement of mechanical properties of the composite membranes. Furthermore, in situ vertical growth of LDH on the surface of SiO 2 cores can effectively avoid the ab-face stacking aggregation of LDH, which can take full advantage of the intrinsic hydroxide-conducting ability of LDH nanosheets. Compared to the ion exchange capability (only 2.09 mmol g −1 ) and effective ionic mobility (1.23×10 −5 cm 2 s −1 V −1 ) of the pristine membrane, the two values for the composite membrane containing 6 wt% of QLDH@SiO 2 increased to 2.63 mmol g −1 and 1.50×10 −5 cm 2 s −1 V −1 , respectively. In alkaline direct methanol fuel cell tests at 60 °C, the QCS/PVA-6% QLDH@SiO 2 composite membrane demonstrates peak power density of 64 mW cm −2 which is 82% higher than that of the pristine membrane (only 35 mW cm −2 ). Moreover, the increased alkaline stability and decreased methanol permeability of the composite membranes also guarantee their satisfactory fuel cell stability.

Abstract:To retain the optimum hydration level of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) without humidification sub-system, a novel self-humidifying composite membrane was fabricated by the technology of Si[OCH2CH3]4 in situ sol-gel reaction in a commercial Nafion 112 membrane. The physico-chemical properties of the membrane were studied by means of AFM, SEM and AC impedance. These results showed that the nano-SiO2 reactant was uniformly distributed in the composite membrane. It was found that the proton conductivity increased observably by dispersing 3 wt % nano-SiO2 in the composite membrane at low water content, and the SiO2/Nafion composite membrane improved the self-humidifying performance of PEMFC.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.

Abstract:Herein we report a new ammoniation-based chemical modification strategy for synthesis of continuous and uniform metal-organic framework (MOF)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with attractive performance. Ammoniation can promote the support PVDF membrane to produce amino groups, form a nanoparticle structure, and be well cross-linked; therefore, the high-density heterogeneous nucleation sites for MOFs growth were provided and the thermal stability and chemical resistance of composite membranes can be greatly improved. The high-quality layers of representative Cu-BTC and ZIF-8 were synthesized on the chemically modified PVDF membranes. By ammoniation, ZIF-7 can even be grown under harsh synthetic conditions such as in DMF precursor solutions at 403K. The fabricated MOF/PVDF composite membranes with excellent hollow fiber structures and enhanced structural stability exhibited high H-2 permselectivities for H-2/CO2 and H-2/N-2.

Abstract:In order to obtain a dual-functional nanofiber framework that could simultaneously serve as an ultra-strong reinforcing substrate and a fast ion transport medium, herein, silica coated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (SiO2@PVDF) electrospun nanofiber mat was firstly prepared using a universal polydopamine-assisted sol-gel method. After grafting with dense quaternary ammonium groups, quaternized SiO2@PVDF (QSiO2@PVDF) was yield. This mat with densely cationized surface can not only provide a reliable mechanical support for super-hydrophilic quaternized chitosan (QCS), but also significantly improve the ionic conductivity of the whole system. The resulting QCS impregnated membrane exhibits satisfactory wet strength of as high as 11.9 MPa while pure QCS is hardly self-supporting. Moreover, the surface high-concentration cationic groups can establish channel-like ion transport pathways with the aid of 1D continuous nanofibers, thus obtaining high ionic conductivity of 0.041 S cm−1 (80 °C), which is about 1.3 times higher than that of pure QCS. The single alkaline fuel cell using this membrane demonstrates a maximum power density of 98.7 mW cm−2. Therefore, this relatively independent design of mechanically support fiber core and high-concentration ion conduction surface provides a new methodology for fabricating high-performance anion exchange membranes.

Abstract:The dispersion and compatibility of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in polymeric matrices significantly influence the properties of composite membranes. However, the modification and functionalization of the node structures of MOFs to improve their dispersion in the polymeric matrix have been rarely studied. In this work, the node structures of UiO-66-NH2 frameworks were modified by the introduction of F species, and abundant Zr-F bonds and pore blocking effects were generated, which significantly affected the comprehensive performances of the composite membranes, including the dispersion, mechanical properties, proton conductivities, swelling ratios, and water uptake. Due to the good dispersion of the fluorinated MOF nanoparticles in the Nafion matrix, the composite membranes had high proton/methanol selectivity and low methanol permeability, which exhibited superior fuel cell performances in DMFCs (24.9-26.8 mW cm(-2)) to that of recast Nafion (20.4 mW cm(-2)). Notably, this was the first time that the node structures of MOF-based nanoparticles were fluorinated to improve their dispersion in a polymeric matrix, providing a simple strategy for developing high-performance composite membranes.

Abstract:The development of polymer exchange membranes (PEMs) with high proton conductivity under high temperature and low relative humidity (RH) conditions is important to the improvement of the comprehensive performance of the fuel cell. In this paper, we present a novel approach for the design of semi-crystalline fluorinated PEMs (FSPP-1) via Ni(0)-catalyzed coupling polymerization. The structural characteristics of FSPP-1 are composed of retaining a portion of the fluorinated matrix (coil units) and introducing aromatic π-π interactions in the hydrophilic block (rod units), as well as precisely controlling the same block length along the main chain axis, which is a similar, molecular-level approach as the prototypical Nafion™ 117. The morphology, water state, and proton conductivity of FSPP-1 were investigated in detail, and the results show higher proton conductivity at 40% RH at 80 °C. The study also revealed that a dense, narrow distribution of hydrophilic nanochannels were formed with good connectivity of the hydrophilic nanochannels in FSPP-1. More importantly, π-π interactions in the hydrophilic block and helical perfluoroalkyl chains in the hydrophobic block coexisted in FSPP-1 ionomers, forming more small and dense crystallite domains, which was found to be beneficial to improving the stability of the nanochannels at elevated temperature and low RH. This strategy to simultaneously increase the density of ion transport channels and high temperature stability provides a baseline for the molecular-level design of high temperature PEMs.

Abstract:Nafion has been the benchmark of proton exchange membrane for decades due to the excellent proton conduction and physicochemical properties. While the strong dependence of transfer channel continuity on humidity always causes serious conductivity drops and hampers the wide application. Herein, a combination of electrospinning and soft template (ionic liquid) methods is proposed to fabricate porous Nafion nanofiber. The resultant nanofiber mat is then impregnated with chitosan (CS) to prepare porous nanofiber composite membrane (PNFCM). This is different from traditional nanofiber composite membrane (NFCM), of which through-plane conductivity is much lower than in-plane one (i.e., strong transfer anisotropy). The abundant pores inside porous nanofibers provide numerous vertical transfer channels at interfaces between CS and pore walls. Meanwhile, the –NH/–NH2 groups on CS form acid-base pairs with –SO3H groups along pore walls. These stable vertical pathways significantly facilitate the through-plane proton conduction at both hydrated and anhydrous conditions. Particularly, PNFCM attains perpendicular conductivities of 307 mS cm−1 at 90 °C and 100% RH, and 150 mS cm−1 at 120 °C and 0% RH, which are, respectively, 3.2 and 2.7 times of that of NFCM. Consequently, the transfer anisotropy coefficient decreases and fuel cell performances enhance obviously.

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are a vital component in fuel cells (FCs) that attract significant research interest for the present hydrogen energy use. High proton conductivity of PEMs under various operation conditions highly influences the integrated performance of PCs that determines their commercial applications. Hence mesoporous superacidic sulfated zirconia (S-ZrO2) is fabricated and introduced into Nafion matrix to construct hybrid PEMs. The mesoporosity of S-ZrO2 is demonstrated highly controllable. High mesoporosity leads to increased amount of sulfonic groups (-SO3H) aggregating on S-ZrO2 surface. When introduced in PEMs, the highly mesoporous S-ZrO2 chemically enhances the amount of proton-containing groups, structurally improves the density of ion channels, and reserves water as effective reservoirs, which resultantly maintains high proton conductivity under variable conditions, and thus the performance of assembled FCs. The SZrO2 exhibits the highest surface area of 181 m(2) g(-1). The hybrid PEMs loaded with 10 wt% such S-ZrO2 achieve a highest proton conductivity of 0.83 S cm(-1) that is similar to 7 time of that for pristine Nafion (R) membranes. The power density at 0.6 V of FCs with the hybrid PEMs is 786 mW cm(-2), much higher than that for commercial Nafion 211. (C) 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis and Characterization of Enhanced Proton-Conducting Nafion® 117- Silica Composite Membranes for Fuel Cell Applications

Sigwadi Nafion®/silica nanocomposite membranes were prepared by impregnation method from Nafion® 117 and sol-gel pre-synthesized n-octadecyl-trimethoxy silane (C18TMS) coated silica nanoparticles. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) of pristine silica particles displayed monodispersed nanospheres with diameters ranging from 150-350 nm; while Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis presented 760 m2/g BET surface area, a micropore-mesopore bimodal distribution of micropore systems with respective pore volume at 14.6 Å and 17.0 Å (2.01 x 10-3 cm3/g.Å), as well as the prolific mesopores centered at 29.5 Å (5.64 x 10-2 cm3/g.Å). Characterization of Nafion® 117 based membranes on SEM, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and x-ray diffraction (XRD), and tensile stress exhibited varying surface morphology with silica loadings, structural interaction between membrane support and the ion exchanger, thermal stabilities (up to 330 °C), crystalline nature, and reasonable mechanical stability of nanocomposite membranes. The maximum water uptake (44.8 %) and proton conductivity of (1.14 x10-2 S/cm) were obtained on low Nafion®/SiO2 (5%) loaded membrane. While both composite membranes displayed the improved reduction in methanol permeability, 2.43x10-07 cm2/s at 80 °C was obtained with high Nafion®/SiO2 (10%) loading. Improved water uptake and proton conductivity substantiate the high ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.81 meq.g-1 when compared to IEC of 0.93 meq.g-1 [pristine Nafion®] and 1.46 meq.g-1 [Nafion®/SiO2 (10%)]. The increase in IEC value may be due to the high acid functionalization of additional sulfonic acid groups surrounded by hydrophilic segments of nanosilica, which improves the properties of the membrane. The high proton conductivity coupled with great water retention capabilities indicated that the Nafion®/SiO2 nanocomposite membranes could be utilized as proton exchange membranes for medium temperature methanol fuel cells. Abstract:Novel Nafion composite proton exchange membranes are prepared using mesoporous MCM-41 silica nanospheres as inorganic fillers. The novelty of this study lies in the structural design of inorganic silica fillers: the nanosized and monodisperse spherical morphology of fillers facilitates the preparation of homogenous composite membranes, whilst the superior water adsorption of the mesostructure in fillers consigns enhanced water retention properties to the polymer membranes. Scanning electron microscopy images of the composite membranes indicate that well-dispersed silica nanospheres are embedded in the Nafion matrix, but a large amount of added fillers (3wt.%) causes some agglomeration of the nanospheres. Compared with the Nafion cast membrane, the composite membranes offer improved thermal stability, enhanced water retention properties, and reduced methanol crossover. Despite the enhancement of water retention, the composite membranes still exhibit a proton conductivity reduction of 10–40% compared with pristine Nafion. This is likely due to the incorporation of much less conductive silica fillers than Nafion. The composite membrane containing 1wt.% of fillers displays the best cell performance in direct methanol fuel cell tests; it gives a maximum power density of 21.8mWcm−2, i.e., ∼20% higher than the Nafion cast membrane. This is attributed to its similar conductivity to Nafion, and its markedly reduced methanol crossover, namely, ∼1.2 times lower.

Abstract:Membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is the core component of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), which largely dictates the final performance of the device. When PEMFCs are in operation, the internal water migration greatly affects the performance output, so better water management in MEA is necessary. Herein, an additional membrane layer containing sulfonic acid-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SO 3 -MCNT) has been sandwiched between the commercial Nafion proton exchange membrane and the anode catalyst layer. The newly added composite membrane is able to optimize the water electro-osmotic drag (EOD) and back diffusion (BD) and as well as accelerate the proton transfer, which leads to a substantial improvement in the performance of the MEA. This method is practicable with obvious advantages under the conditions closer to the actual operation of PEMFC.

Anisotropic membrane with high proton conductivity sustaining upon dehydration

Abstract:In fuel cells and electrolyzers, suboptimal proton conductivity and its dramatic drop at low humidity remain major drawbacks in proton exchange membranes (PEMs), including current benchmark Nafion. Sustained through-plane (TP) alignment of nanochannels was proposed as a remedy but proved challenging. We report an anisotropic composite PEM, mimicking the water-conductive composite structure of bamboo that meets this challenge. Micro- and nanoscale alignment of conductive pathways is achieved by in-plane thermal compression of a mat composed of co-electrospun Nafion and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers stabilizing the alignment. This translates to pronounced TP-enhanced proton conductivity, twice that of pure Nafion at high humidity, 13 times larger at low humidity, and 10 times larger water diffusivity. This remarkable improvement is elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations, which indicate that stronger nanochannels alignment upon dehydration compensates for reduced water content. The presented approach paves the way to overcoming the major drawbacks of ionomers and advancing the development of next-generation membranes for energy applications.

Abstract:Nafion/inorganic (inorganic = S-ZrO2, SiO2-SO3H, SBA-15-SO3H, MCM-41-SO3H, and P-Si gels) composite membranes were synthesized with the goal of increasing the proton conductivity and water retention at elevated temperatures up to 120 {degree sign}C and reduced relative humidity (RH) down to 25%. Inorganic materials were incorporated within the Nafion by three different techniques. The addition of inorganic particles increased the membrane ion exchange capacity (IEC). The conductivity of composite membranes with sulfonated inorganic materials was in agreement with their IEC but not higher than the conductivity of the recast Nafion in the whole range of inorganic loading. Conductivity of the Nafion/P-Si gel membranes was affected by the surface of inorganic powders and was higher for membranes prepared by in situ formation techniques. Effect of the inorganic phase on membrane performance in a fuel cell was much stronger than on its conductivity due to substantial improvement in membrane water retention properties.
Preparation of a self-humidifying membrane electrode assembly for fuel cell and its performance analysis

Abstract:A novel nano-porous material SiO 2 -gel was prepared. After being purified by H 2 O 2 , then protonized by H 2 SO 4 and desiccated in vacuum, the SiO 2 -gel, mixed with Nafion solution, was coated between an electrode and a solid electrolyte, which made a new type of self-humidifying membrane electrode assembly. The SiO 2 powder was characterized by FTIR, BET and XRD. The surface of the electrodes was characterized by SEM and EDS. The performances of the self-humidifying membrane electrodes were analyzed by polarization discharge and AC impedance under the operation modes of external humidification and self-humidification respectively. Experimental-results indicated that the SiO 2 powder held super-hydrophilicity, and the layer of SiO 2 and Nafion polymer between electrode and solid electrolyte expanded three-dimension electrochemistry reac-tion area, maintained stability of catalyst layer and enhanced back-diffusion of water from cathode to anode, so the PEM Fuel cell can generate electricity at self-humidification mode. The power density of single PEM fuel cell reached 1.5 W/cm 2 under 0.2 Mpa, 70°C and dry hydrogen and oxygen.
Property Enhancement Effects of Side-Chain-Type Naphthalene-Based Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether ketone) on Nafion Composite Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Abstract:Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes were prepared by blending raw Nafion and synthesized side-chain-type naphthalene-based sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) with a sulfonation degree of 1.35 (SNPAEK-1.35). The incorporation of SNPAEK-1.35 polymer with ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.01 mequiv·g-1 into a Nafion matrix has the property enhancement effects, such as increasing IECs, improving proton conductivity, enhancing mechanical properties, reducing methanol crossover, and improving single cell performance of Nafion. Morphology studies show that Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes exhibit a well-defined microphase separation structure depending on the contents of SNPAEK-1.35 polymer. Among them, Nafion/SNPAEK-7.5% with a bicontinuous morphology exhibits the best comprehensive properties. For example, it shows the highest proton conductivities of 0.092 S cm-1 at 25 °C and 0.163 S cm-1 at 80 °C, which are higher than those of recast Nafion with 0.073 S cm-1 at 25 °C and 0.133 S cm-1 at 80 °C, respectively. Nafion/SNPAEK-5.0% and Nafion/SNPAEK-7.5% membranes display an open circuit voltage of 0.77 V and a maximum power density of 47 mW cm-2 at 80 °C, which are much higher than those of recast Nafion of 0.63 V and 24 mW cm-2 under the same conditions. Nafion/SNPAEK-5.0% membrane also has comparable tensile strength (12.7 MPa) to recast Nafion (13.7 MPa), and higher Young's modulus (330 MPa) than that of recast Nafion (240 MPa). By combining their high proton conductivities, comparable mechanical properties, and good single cell performance, Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes have the potential to be polymer electrolyte materials for direct methanol fuel cell applications.
