Abstract:This investigation experimentally demonstrates a tunable slow light device using a quantum dot (QD) semiconductor laser. The QD semiconductor laser at 1.3 mum fabricated on a GaAs substrate is grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Tunable slow light can be achieved by adjusting the bias current and wavelength detuning. The slow light device operated under probe signal from 5 to 10 GHz is presented. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the tunable slow light device can be used in a subcarrier multiplexed system.

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically and numerically that tunable slow light can be realized in planar semiconductor metamaterials with the unit cell composed of two different elements in a broad terahertz regime. In the unit cell, one element is a semiconductor split ring resonator and another one is a semiconductor cut wire. The interaction between the two elements of the unit cell, induced directly or indirectly by the incident electromagnetic wave, leads to a transparent window, resembling the classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency. This transparent window, caused by the coupling of bright-bright modes or dark-bright modes, can be continuously tuned in a broad frequency regime. The strong normal phase dispersion in the vicinity of this transparent window results in the slow light effect. This scheme provides an alternative way to achieve tunable slow light in a broad frequency band and can find important applications in active and reversibly tunable slow light devices. Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. Abstract:We develop a simple model for the slow lights in Vertical Cavity Surface Emission Lasers (VCSELs), with the combination of cavity and population pulsation effects. The dependences of probe signal power, injection bias current and wavelength detuning for the group delays are demonstrated numerically and experimentally. Up to 65 ps group delays and up to 10 GHz modulation frequency can be achieved in the room temperature at the wavelength of 1.3 $\mu$m. The most significant feature of our VCSEL device is that the length of active region is only several $\mu$m long. Based on the experimental parameters of quantum dot VCSEL structures, we show that the resonance effect of laser cavity plays a significant role to enhance the group delays.

Abstract:We report on the fast wavelength switching in V-cavity laser (VCL) with quantum well intermixed tuning section. The laser wavelength can be switched between 32 channels at 100 GHz spacing using a single electrode control. The fabrication process involves a quantum well intermixing (QWI) process using KrF laser irradiation and rapid thermal annealing (RTA). The tuning current is less than 40 mA, much lower than previously demonstrated tunable VCL based on electro-thermal-optic effect. The wavelength switching is also faster by three orders of magnitude. The dynamic switching characteristics between two channels with different numbers of intermediate channels are investigated. It shows that the switching time is about 1 ns between adjacent channels and increases up to 12 ns with increasing number of intermediate channels.

Abstract:We report the slow-light enhanced spin-resolved in-plane emission from a single quantum dot (QD) in a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW). The slow light dispersions in PCWs are designed to match the emission wavelengths of single QDs. The resonance between two spin states emitted from a single QD and a slow light mode of a waveguide is investigated under a magnetic field with Faraday configuration. Two spin states of a single QD experience different degrees of enhancement as their emission wavelengths are shifted by combining diamagnetic and Zeeman effects with an optical excitation power control. A circular polarization degree up to 0.81 is achieved by changing the off-resonant excitation power. Strongly polarized photon emission enhanced by a slow light mode shows great potential to attain controllable spin-resolved photon sources for integrated optical quantum networks on chip.

Abstract:We propose a tunable on-chip micromaser using a superconducting quantumcircuit (SQC). By taking advantage of externally controllable statetransitions, a state population inversion can be achieved and preserved for thetwo working levels of the SQC and, when needed, the SQC can generate a singlephoton. We can regularly repeat these processes in each cycle when thepreviously generated photon in the cavity is decaying, so that a periodicsequence of single photons can be produced persistently. This provides acontrollable way for implementing a persistent single-photon source on amicroelectronic chip.

Abstract:We report a nano-electromechanical optoelectronic (NEMO) tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with an ultra-thin (145 nm) electrostatically actuated high-index-contrast subwavelength grating (HCG) designed to strongly reflect TE-polarized light. Single mode emission (SMSR >45 dB) and continuous wavelength tuning (approximately 4 nm) were obtained at room temperature with output power up to 2 mW under continuous wave (CW) operation. A record short wavelength tuning time (approximately 90 ns) is experimentally demonstrated, which is >100 times faster than previously reported DBR-based tunable VCSELs and a 1.7 times improvement over the previously reported TM polarized NEMO tunable VCSELs.

Abstract:This investigation experimentally demonstrates the dynamic characteristics of quantum dot vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (QD VCSEL) without and with light injection. The QD VCSEL is fully doped structure on GaAs substrate and operates in the 1.3 mum optical communication wavelength. The eye diagram, frequency response, and intermodulation distortion are presented. We also demonstrate that the frequency response enhancement by light injection technique allows us to improve the performance of subcarrier multiplexed system.

Abstract:We present a method to achieve flat-top gain spectrum through overlapping multiple gain lines, which can be used to increase slow light bandwidth and relative pulse delay. A tunable gain bandwidth can be realized by changing the number of spectral lines and frequency separation between adjacent spectral lines. We demonstrate the method in a SBS-based slow light system. A phase modulator is used to modulate the phase of the pump wave, generating a pump wave with multi-line spectrum and achieving a Brillouin gain bandwidth of ~ 330 MHz.
