Abstract:We theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated an injection-locking based all-optical flip-flop memory using a simple and compact tunable V-cavity laser (VCL). A bistable region in the tuning characteristics of the VCL is employed for the flip-flop operation. The state of the VCL can be set and reset by injecting signal pulses at two different wavelengths. The pulse power for both set and reset signal is only about 1 pJ. Short response times of about 150 ps are measured for storing and erasing.

Abstract:With the development of intelligent broadband optical networks, tunable semiconductor lasers are becoming more and more important for wavelength routing and signal processing. A simple and compact widely tunable laser has recently been developed using half-wave coupled V-cavity. The size of the chip is only about 500 μm×300 μm, and the fabrication process is similar to a simple Fabry-Perot laser. It does not require any grating or epitaxial regrowth, and the wavelength can be switched from channel to channel using a single electrode control. The wavelength switching time is about 20 μs with current injection induced thermo-optic effect, without requiring any bandgap engineering during the device fabrication. By using quantum well intermixing to selectively blue-shift the bandgap of the waveguide in the tuning section, fast wavelength switching is realized with a response time of ~ 10 ns or less. Optical bistability is also observed in the V-cavity laser, which can be used for achieving all-optical flip-flop. The wavelength state of the V-cavity laser can be set and reset by injecting signal pulses at two different wavelengths. The pulse power for both set and reset signal is only about 1 pJ. Short response times of about 150 ps is measured for the flip-flop operation.

Abstract:An all-optical flip-flop memory is built-up based on two ring lasers, where a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is shared in two laser cavities. The flip-flop outputs short pulses that have tunable central wavelengths, a pulsewidth of 1.5 ps (FWHM) at 10 GHz, generated by actively modelocking using phase modulation. Bistability of the flip-flop is observed by introducing optical feedback via an external cavity. The static contrast ratio of the device is over 20 dB between the dominating and suppressed states and the switching power is as low as -18 dBm.

Abstract:We report the operation of an all-optical set-reset (SR) flip-flop based on vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs). This flip-flop is cascadable, has low optical switching power (similar to 10 mu W), and has the potential to be integrated on a small footprint (similar to 100 mu m(2)). The flip-flop is composed of two cross-coupled electrically pumped VCSOA inverters and uses the principles of cross-gain modulation, polarization gain anisotropy, and highly nonlinear gain characteristics to achieve flip-flop functionality. We believe that, when integrated on chip, this type of all-optical flip-flop opens new prospects for implementing all-optical fast memories and timing regeneration circuits. Abstract:A multi-state optical flip-flop memory based on cascaded lasers is presented. We show that only one of the lasers can lase at a time, thus the state of the optical memory is determined by the wavelength of the dominant laser. The light from the dominant laser suppresses its neighboring lasers through gain saturation, but still receives amplification by the active element of the suppressed lasers, compensating for coupling losses. This light passes through each of the successive lasers, simultaneously suppressing and being amplified, thus all other lasers are suppressed. Abstract:We investigate a system consisting of multiple ring lasers coupled by a single gain medium. All the ring lasers share a common feedback arm. The output power of an individual laser shows periodic oscillations as a function of time. The periodicity of the oscillation is determined by the ratio of the roundtrip times of the feedback arm and the ring cavity. In the case that two of such ring lasers are coupled, either their oscillation periodicities are synchronized, or the system is bi-stable. In the latter operation regime, the system can act as an optical flip-flop memory whose state be switched by injection of external light. The concept can be extended to multi-state operations; an eight-state optical flip-flop memory is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of picosecond and sub-picosecond optical pulses source by using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) placed in a ring cavity. Sub-picosecond optical pulses are generated by using an SOA and a linear polarizer placed in a passively mode-locked ring-laser configuration. Nonlinear polarization rotation in the SOA serves as the mode-locking mechanism. The ring cavity generates pulses with duration below 800 fs (FWHM) at a repetition rate of 14 MHz. We also demonstrate an all-optical flip-flop based on two coupled identical actively mode-locked lasers. Each ring-laser outputs optical pulses with duration of 3 ps (FWHM) at a repetition rate of 10 GHz. We demonstrate flip-flop operation and regular toggling between the states.

Abstract:We present an optical shift register that consist out of two serially connected optical flip-flop memories driven by common clock pulses. Each optical flip-flop consists out of two ring lasers sharing a single active element, which makes the optical flip-flops easily cascade with each other. The two cascaded optical flip-flops are controlled by the clock pulses in such a way that the input data set the new state of the first optical flipflop, after the state of the first flip-flop has been transferred to the second optical flip-flop. The concept is demonstrated at an operation speed of 20 kHz, which is limited by the 10 m long laser cavities formed by the fiber pig-tailed components.

Abstract:Subfemtojoule polarization bistable switching in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is experimentally demonstrated. All-optical flip-flop operation of the VCSEL was performed using two orthogonally polarized injection light pulses. The optimum wavelengths of the two injection pulses for achieving minimum switching power were different and corresponded to the lasing wavelengths of the two polarization states of the laser. The pulse width/switching frequency dependence of the injection pulses showed that a minimum switching energy was obtained at 1ns∕500MHz. A record low switching energy of 0.3fJ has been achieved as well as a record high switching frequency of 10GHz.

Abstract:We present an optical shift register consisting of two optical flip-flop memories placed in series. Each flip-flop consists of a bi-stable ring laser. The shift register operates as follows. A strong clock pulse that clears each flip-flop is injected in the shift register to clear the second flip-flop. The output of the first flip-flop then sets the new state of the second flip-flop before it is cleared itself by the delayed clock pulse. Afterwards new information is written in the first flip-flop. The shift register was implemented using fiber pig-tailed components which made the cavities long. 20 KHz operation is experimentally demonstrated.

The concept is explained and experimental results are presented that demonstrate that a contrast ratio of 20 dB and a switching power of <-3 dBm can be obtained. Abstract:Based on the extended spin-flip model, the all-optical flip-flop stability maps of the 1550nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser have been studied. Theoretical results show that excellent agreement is found between theoretical and the reported experimental results in polarization switching point current which is equal to 1.95 times threshold. Furthermore, the polarization bistable region is wide which is from 1.05 to 1.95 times threshold. A new method is presented that uses power difference between two linear polarization modes as the judging criterion of trigger degree and stability maps of all-optical flip-flop operation under different injection parameters are obtained. By alternately injecting set and reset pulse with appropriate parameters, the mutual conversion switching between two polarization modes is realized, the feasibility of all-optical flip-flop operation is checked theoretically. The results show certain guiding significance on the experimental study on all optical buffer technology.

Abstract:An all-optical memory with three states is presented. The memory is realized from three coupled ring lasers. The state of the optical memory is determined by the wavelength of the memory's output light. In each state, only one wavelength is dominant. The three-state all-optical memory can be utilized in all-optical packet switches. The concept of the memory is explained and experimental results are presented that demonstrate that a contrast ratio larger than 40 dB between output states of the memory can be obtained.

Abstract:Optomechanics may be viewed as a light-mechanics interface to realize hybrid structures for (classical or quantum) information processing, switching or storage. Using the two-laser technique, in this paper, we theoretically devise a protocol for quantum light memory via a cavity optomechanical system composed of a Fabry-Perot cavity and a mechanical resonator. Due to the long-lived mechanical resonator, this quantum memory for light based on optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) can serve as a long-term memory that can store the full quantum light contained in an optical pulse. It is shown that, with the tunable pump laser, the quantum signal light can be reaccelerated and converted back on demand. Our presented work could open the door to all-optical routers for light memory devices and have a guide to actual experiments.

Abstract:In order to realize the optical read-write-control and optical logic judgement, an optical monostable flip-flop based on the semiconductor optical amplifier （SOA） dual-loop structure lasing at different wavelengths is presented. The flip-flop has two states, steady state and unsteady state. The flip-flop has an extinction ratio of 35 dB, switching time of only 1--2 ring cavity cycle and a large wavelength range of control light. The reduction of the length of the SOA ring lasers will greatly cut down the switching time,which makes the monostable flip-flop be the logic and control unit in optical buffer.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent advancements in all-optical memory components, particularly focusing on various types of all-optical flip-flops (FFs) based on photonic crystal (PC) structures proposed in recent years. PCs, with their unique optical properties and engineered structures, including photonic bandgap control, enhanced light-matter interaction, and compact size, make them especially suitable for optical FFs. The study explores three key materials, silicon, chalcogenide glass, and gallium arsenide, known for their high refractive index contrast, compact size, hybrid integration capability, and easy fabrication processes. Furthermore, these materials exhibit excellent compatibility with different technologies like CMOS and fiber optics, enhancing their versatility in various applications. The structures proposed in the research leverage mechanisms such as waveguides, ring resonators, scattering rods, coupling rods, edge rods, switches, resonant cavities, and multi-mode interference. The paper delves into crucial properties and parameters of all-optical FFs, including response time, contrast ratio, and operating wavelength. Optical FFs possess significant advantages, such as high speed, low power consumption, and potential for integration, making them a promising technology for advancing optical computing and optical memory systems.
