Abstract:We theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated an injection-locking based all-optical flip-flop memory using a simple and compact tunable V-cavity laser (VCL). A bistable region in the tuning characteristics of the VCL is employed for the flip-flop operation. The state of the VCL can be set and reset by injecting signal pulses at two different wavelengths. The pulse power for both set and reset signal is only about 1 pJ. Short response times of about 150 ps are measured for storing and erasing.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of optical bistable switching in a combined distributed-feedback/Fabry–Perot structure. The sample had a high switching contrast with almost zero reflectivity in the on-state. A turnoff time as short as 4 ns was measured. The threshold power for bistability was about 2 mW. Bistable switching with the memory effect and a potential application for all-optical signal regeneration were demonstrated.

Abstract:In order to realize the optical read-write-control and optical logic judgement, an optical monostable flip-flop based on the semiconductor optical amplifier （SOA） dual-loop structure lasing at different wavelengths is presented. The flip-flop has two states, steady state and unsteady state. The flip-flop has an extinction ratio of 35 dB, switching time of only 1--2 ring cavity cycle and a large wavelength range of control light. The reduction of the length of the SOA ring lasers will greatly cut down the switching time,which makes the monostable flip-flop be the logic and control unit in optical buffer.

Abstract:Optical bistability opens up a promising avenue toward various optical nonlinear functions analogous to their electrical counterparts, such as switches, logic gates, and memory. Free-space bistable devices have unique advantages in large-scale integration. However, most proposed free-space schemes for optical bistability have limitations in one or more aspects of low contrast ratio, compromised compatibility, slow switching speed, and bulk size. Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have recently shown an ultrafast and giant optical nonlinearity within a subwavelength scale, potentially overcoming these obstacles. Using large-mobility indium-doped cadmium oxide (CdO) as the ENZ material, we numerically demonstrate two efficient schemes for high-contrast optical bistability within a deep subwavelength size based on the ENZ mode and the Berreman mode. The ENZ wavelength can be optically tuned with a typical time scale of sub-picoseconds, giving rise to a switchable bistability between the near-zero state and the high-reflection state. Our work contributes to the advances on compact and ultrafast all-optical signal processing.

Abstract:Based on the extended spin-flip model, the all-optical flip-flop stability maps of the 1550nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser have been studied. Theoretical results show that excellent agreement is found between theoretical and the reported experimental results in polarization switching point current which is equal to 1.95 times threshold. Furthermore, the polarization bistable region is wide which is from 1.05 to 1.95 times threshold. A new method is presented that uses power difference between two linear polarization modes as the judging criterion of trigger degree and stability maps of all-optical flip-flop operation under different injection parameters are obtained. By alternately injecting set and reset pulse with appropriate parameters, the mutual conversion switching between two polarization modes is realized, the feasibility of all-optical flip-flop operation is checked theoretically. The results show certain guiding significance on the experimental study on all optical buffer technology.

Abstract:Ultrafast optical bistability was observed in a planar optical waveguide made with a 2,9,16,23-tetraoctadecanoylamido-substituted vanadyl phthalocyanine-doped polystyrene film. Input-output curves with hysteresis characteristics were measured with laser pulses of 60-ps pulse width at 532 nm. The switchup and switchdown times were less than 10 and 20 ps, respectively. Abstract:An all-optical flip-flop memory is built-up based on two ring lasers, where a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is shared in two laser cavities. The flip-flop outputs short pulses that have tunable central wavelengths, a pulsewidth of 1.5 ps (FWHM) at 10 GHz, generated by actively modelocking using phase modulation. Bistability of the flip-flop is observed by introducing optical feedback via an external cavity. The static contrast ratio of the device is over 20 dB between the dominating and suppressed states and the switching power is as low as -18 dBm.

Abstract:With the development of intelligent broadband optical networks, tunable semiconductor lasers are becoming more and more important for wavelength routing and signal processing. A simple and compact widely tunable laser has recently been developed using half-wave coupled V-cavity. The size of the chip is only about 500 μm×300 μm, and the fabrication process is similar to a simple Fabry-Perot laser. It does not require any grating or epitaxial regrowth, and the wavelength can be switched from channel to channel using a single electrode control. The wavelength switching time is about 20 μs with current injection induced thermo-optic effect, without requiring any bandgap engineering during the device fabrication. By using quantum well intermixing to selectively blue-shift the bandgap of the waveguide in the tuning section, fast wavelength switching is realized with a response time of ~ 10 ns or less. Optical bistability is also observed in the V-cavity laser, which can be used for achieving all-optical flip-flop. The wavelength state of the V-cavity laser can be set and reset by injecting signal pulses at two different wavelengths. The pulse power for both set and reset signal is only about 1 pJ. Short response times of about 150 ps is measured for the flip-flop operation.

Abstract:We investigate a system consisting of multiple ring lasers coupled by a single gain medium. All the ring lasers share a common feedback arm. The output power of an individual laser shows periodic oscillations as a function of time. The periodicity of the oscillation is determined by the ratio of the roundtrip times of the feedback arm and the ring cavity. In the case that two of such ring lasers are coupled, either their oscillation periodicities are synchronized, or the system is bi-stable. In the latter operation regime, the system can act as an optical flip-flop memory whose state be switched by injection of external light. The concept can be extended to multi-state operations; an eight-state optical flip-flop memory is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Relaxation oscillation can occur in a bistable system when the nonlinearity has two contributions of opposite sign and different time constants.1 Optoelectronic bistable laser diode or light emitting diode (BILD or BILED) circuit is a promising optical logic device.2 Here we present the observation and analysis of optical regenerative pulsation in a system constructed of a liquid crystal switch and BILED circuit. Sine wavelike pulses were obtained in our experiment, and the experimental results show that the oscillation frequencies were stable. The frequency can be adjusted by changing the voltage supply. In our experiment the output from an argon laser is controlled by a LC switch, which is connected to a BILED circuit. The voltage applied across the LC switch is provided by an amplifier, and it is proportional to the output of the BILED circuit. The BILED circuit has two output signals of feedback. One is the light emitted from the LED in the circuit. The other is a part of the laser beam transmitted from the LC switch. As oscillation occurs in the circuit, the laser beam is modulated into a train of pulses by the LC switch.

Abstract:The width of hysteresis in optical bistability plays an important role on latching operation. The injected input optical power and wavelength detuning in single mode Fabry-Perot laser diode (SMFP-LD) are two parameters that can impact the width of hysteresis in bistability of dominant mode and injected mode. In this paper, we analyze the effect of wavelength detuning on width of the hysteresis loop, the dynamic power range for optical bistability, and the rising-falling time of output waveform. With this analysis, optical Set Reset flip-flop with simultaneous inverted and non-inverted output at the data rate of 8.5 Gb/s are obtained using SMFP-LDs. The principle is based on the optical bistability phenomena during injection-locking of the Fabry-Perot laser diode. The set and reset pulses are maintained in low power of about -14 and -6 dBm for the power effective configuration. The contrast ratios of more than 20 dB with simultaneous non-inverted and inverted output Q and Q are observed. Clear output spectrum domain results, waveforms, eye diagram with extinction ratio of more than 12 dB, a rising/falling time of about 40 ps, and bit error rate (BER) measurement without noise floor up to 10 -12 are observed. The maximum power penalty is about 1.8 dB at BER of 10 -9.

Abstract:The steady-state behavior in a unidirectional cavity has been analyzed by taking into account the effect of phase fluctuation in the control field based on a Λ-type atomic model. It is shown that even if both fields are in resonance with the corresponding atomic transitions, optical bistability can still be realized due to a phase fluctuation in the control field. Furthermore, the bistable hysteresis loop becomes wider as the linewidth increases.
