Abstract:By exploiting three coupled semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fiber ring lasers, a compact, integratable, and polarization-independent three-state all-optical memory is demonstrated, with 40-dB extinction ratio for each state. Dynamic flip-flop operation between states is also demonstrated with switching pulse energy of 13.6 nJ. Due to the broad bandwidth of SOA gain spectrum, the wavelength range of set pulses is large. Finally, the transition behavior of state switching is investigated.

Abstract:An all-optical flip-flop memory is built-up based on two ring lasers, where a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is shared in two laser cavities. The flip-flop outputs short pulses that have tunable central wavelengths, a pulsewidth of 1.5 ps (FWHM) at 10 GHz, generated by actively modelocking using phase modulation. Bistability of the flip-flop is observed by introducing optical feedback via an external cavity. The static contrast ratio of the device is over 20 dB between the dominating and suppressed states and the switching power is as low as -18 dBm.

Abstract:In order to realize the optical read-write-control and optical logic judgement, an optical monostable flip-flop based on the semiconductor optical amplifier （SOA） dual-loop structure lasing at different wavelengths is presented. The flip-flop has two states, steady state and unsteady state. The flip-flop has an extinction ratio of 35 dB, switching time of only 1--2 ring cavity cycle and a large wavelength range of control light. The reduction of the length of the SOA ring lasers will greatly cut down the switching time,which makes the monostable flip-flop be the logic and control unit in optical buffer.

Abstract:We investigate a system consisting of multiple ring lasers coupled by a single gain medium. All the ring lasers share a common feedback arm. The output power of an individual laser shows periodic oscillations as a function of time. The periodicity of the oscillation is determined by the ratio of the roundtrip times of the feedback arm and the ring cavity. In the case that two of such ring lasers are coupled, either their oscillation periodicities are synchronized, or the system is bi-stable. In the latter operation regime, the system can act as an optical flip-flop memory whose state be switched by injection of external light. The concept can be extended to multi-state operations; an eight-state optical flip-flop memory is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:An all-optical memory with three states is presented. The memory is realized from three coupled ring lasers. The state of the optical memory is determined by the wavelength of the memory's output light. In each state, only one wavelength is dominant. The three-state all-optical memory can be utilized in all-optical packet switches. The concept of the memory is explained and experimental results are presented that demonstrate that a contrast ratio larger than 40 dB between output states of the memory can be obtained.

Abstract:A multi-state optical flip-flop memory based on cascaded lasers is presented. We show that only one of the lasers can lase at a time, thus the state of the optical memory is determined by the wavelength of the dominant laser. The light from the dominant laser suppresses its neighboring lasers through gain saturation, but still receives amplification by the active element of the suppressed lasers, compensating for coupling losses. This light passes through each of the successive lasers, simultaneously suppressing and being amplified, thus all other lasers are suppressed. Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of picosecond and sub-picosecond optical pulses source by using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) placed in a ring cavity. Sub-picosecond optical pulses are generated by using an SOA and a linear polarizer placed in a passively mode-locked ring-laser configuration. Nonlinear polarization rotation in the SOA serves as the mode-locking mechanism. The ring cavity generates pulses with duration below 800 fs (FWHM) at a repetition rate of 14 MHz. We also demonstrate an all-optical flip-flop based on two coupled identical actively mode-locked lasers. Each ring-laser outputs optical pulses with duration of 3 ps (FWHM) at a repetition rate of 10 GHz. We demonstrate flip-flop operation and regular toggling between the states.

Abstract:We present an optical shift register that consist out of two serially connected optical flip-flop memories driven by common clock pulses. Each optical flip-flop consists out of two ring lasers sharing a single active element, which makes the optical flip-flops easily cascade with each other. The two cascaded optical flip-flops are controlled by the clock pulses in such a way that the input data set the new state of the first optical flipflop, after the state of the first flip-flop has been transferred to the second optical flip-flop. The concept is demonstrated at an operation speed of 20 kHz, which is limited by the 10 m long laser cavities formed by the fiber pig-tailed components.

Abstract:We theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated an injection-locking based all-optical flip-flop memory using a simple and compact tunable V-cavity laser (VCL). A bistable region in the tuning characteristics of the VCL is employed for the flip-flop operation. The state of the VCL can be set and reset by injecting signal pulses at two different wavelengths. The pulse power for both set and reset signal is only about 1 pJ. Short response times of about 150 ps are measured for storing and erasing.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel all-optical memory to store high-speed optical data for long term. The key elements of the memory are Mach–Zehnder Interferometers (MZIs) incorporating semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), acting as AND gate and regenerator in a loop configuration. The simulations show that the memory can be operated up to 80Gb/s. In addition, the memory was demonstrated at 21.3Gb/s.

Abstract:We present an optical shift register consisting of two optical flip-flop memories placed in series. Each flip-flop consists of a bi-stable ring laser. The shift register operates as follows. A strong clock pulse that clears each flip-flop is injected in the shift register to clear the second flip-flop. The output of the first flip-flop then sets the new state of the second flip-flop before it is cleared itself by the delayed clock pulse. Afterwards new information is written in the first flip-flop. The shift register was implemented using fiber pig-tailed components which made the cavities long. 20 KHz operation is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate an error-free 160 Gb/s SOA-based optical wavelength converter. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to switch 80 Gb/s data-packets all- optically. The optical wavelength converter consists of an SOA and an optical filter. Assisting by an optical bandpass filter, an effectively recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in an SOA, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. The integrated optical flip-flop based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We show that the integrated flip-flop is capable to control an optical wavelength conversion up to 160 Gb/s. The system is capable of routing 80 Gb/s data packets with duration of 35 ns, separated by 15 ns of guard time.

Abstract:We demonstrate a disaggregated optically-connected memory (OCM) architecture that supports dynamic resource allocation. Our proposed architecture utilizes a hitless wavelength-selective switch (WSS) based on silicon photonic (SiP) micro-ring resonators (MRRs) embedded with an equal-armed Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which permits a hitless rerouting of multi-wavelength signals. Error-free operation is achieved between a CPU node and two remote memory nodes using silicon photonic switch fabrics, showing the potential of integrating the photonic switched optically connected memory pools to the large-scale data centers and high performance computing (HPC) systems.

Abstract:A method for all-optical frequency multiplication/recovery based on the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) ring cavity with the interference is proposed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. This technique can be used to generate low clock amplitude jitter and input polarization independent pulse trains with the repetition rates of 5-25 GHz from 2.5 GHz driving pulse. Bias current of SOA effect on the amplitude of the output pulse train is great, and there is an optimized bias current of SOA for the base frequency of the 2.5 GHz and 10 GHz, respectively. In addition, this scheme can be applied to the extraction of the clock signal from a pseudorandom bit sequence signal.

Abstract:We report the operation of an all-optical set-reset (SR) flip-flop based on vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs). This flip-flop is cascadable, has low optical switching power (similar to 10 mu W), and has the potential to be integrated on a small footprint (similar to 100 mu m(2)). The flip-flop is composed of two cross-coupled electrically pumped VCSOA inverters and uses the principles of cross-gain modulation, polarization gain anisotropy, and highly nonlinear gain characteristics to achieve flip-flop functionality. We believe that, when integrated on chip, this type of all-optical flip-flop opens new prospects for implementing all-optical fast memories and timing regeneration circuits. Abstract:Implementing on-chip non-volatile optical memories has long been an actively pursued goal, promising significant enhancements in the capability and energy efficiency of photonic integrated circuits. Here, a novel optical memory has been demonstrated exclusively using the semiconductor primary material, silicon. By manipulating the optoelectronic effect of this device, we introduce a hysteresis effect at the silicon-silicon oxide interface, which in turn demonstrates multi-level, non-volatile optical data storage with robust retention and endurance. This new silicon optical memory provides a distinctively simple and accessible route to realize optical data storage in standard silicon foundry processes.
