Abstract:A simple nonisocyanate route for synthesizing crystallizable and tough aliphatic thermoplastic polyureas (TPUreas) is described. Melt transurethane polycondensation of diethylene glycol bis(3-aminopropyl) ether with bis(hydroxyethyl) hexanediurethane and bis(hydroxyethyl) isophoronediurethane was conducted at 170 degrees C under a reduced pressure of 3 mmHg, and a series of TPUreas were prepared. The TPUreas were characterized by GPC, FT-IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, 2D C-13-H-1 HSQC NMR, DEPT-135 C-13 NMR, DSC, TGA, wide-angle X-ray scattering, atomic force microscopy, and tensile tests. The TPUreas exhibited an M-n up to 12 000 g/mol, an M-w up to 17 600 g/mol, T-g between 2.8 and 18.1 degrees C, T-m from 140.5 to 149.8 degrees C, initial decomposition temperature of over 278.4 degrees C, and tensile strength up to 37.81 MPa with elongation at break of 691.25%. TPUreas with high T-m, good tensile strength, and good toughness were prepared through a nonisocyanate route.

Abstract:A non-isocyanate route to synthesize high molecular weight aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethanes through transurethane polymerization from a diurethanediol was provided. A homopolymer of 1, 6-bis (hydroxyethyloxy carbonyl amino) hexane (BHCH), i.e. PBHCH, was synthesized via melt polycondensation of BHCH. The PBHCH had M. of 29200,M of 39700, tensile strength of 28.41 MPa and elongation at break of 3.91%. Meanwhile, a nylon-6 oligomer having H2N- and HO- terminal groups (H2N-PA-OH) was prepared via ring-opening polymerization from caprolactam with ethanolamine, and was transformed into HO- terminated nylon-6 oligomer (HO-PA-OH) through reaction with excessive caprolactone. Co-polycondensation of BHCH with HO-PA-OH was carried out at 170 degrees C under normal pressure for 4 h and at 180 degrees C under reduced pressure of 399 Pa for 6.5 h. Several aliphatic thermoplastic poly (amide-urethane) s having short nylon-6 segments (s-PAUs) were prepared. They were characterized by viscometry, gel permeation chromatography, FTIR, H-1-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry,, thermogravimetric analysis, wide angle X-ray scattering and tensile test. The s-PAUs had M. above 26000, M-w above 33900, T-m between 123.85 and 170.89 degrees C, and initial decomposition temperature over 267.86 degrees C. Their tensile strength reached 28.53 MPa with elongation at break up to 299.0%. These s-PAUs were constituted with short nylon-6 segments and PBHCH sequences or merely dicarbamate units. The s-PAUs were crystallizable thermoplastic polyurethanes. Introducing about 10 mol% short nylon-6 segments having polymerization degree of 2.55 increased the crystallinity of the PBHCH sequences, and improved the toughness of the s-PAUs obviously.

Abstract:A simple non-isocyanate route synthesizing thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) with good thermal and mechanical properties is described. Melt transurethane polycondensation of dimethyl 1,6-hexamethylene dicarbamate with 1,4-butanediol and 1,6-hexanediol was conducted at different molar ratios under the catalysis of tetrabutyl titanate. A series of crystallizable non-isocyanate TPUs with high molecular weight were prepared. The TPUs were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide angle X-ray diffraction, AFM, and tensile tests. The TPUs exhibited Mn ranging from 12 500 to 26 400 g/mol, Mw from 16 700 to 56 400 g/mol, Tm up to 151.4 °C, and initial decomposition temperature over 241.8 °C. Their tensile strength reached 42.99 MPa with a strain at break of 30.00%. TPUs constructed simply with butylene, hexylene, and urethane linkages were successfully synthesized through a non-isocyanate route.

Abstract:A non-isocyanate route for synthesizing thermoplastic polyurethanes with excellent thermal and mechanical properties was described. Melt transurethane polycondensation of 1,6-bis(hydroxyethyloxy carbonyl amino)hexane with four poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs), i.e. PEG400, PEG600, PEG1000, or PEG1500, was conducted at different molar ratios. A series of thermoplastic poly(ether urethane)s (TPEUs) with long PEG sequences were prepared. The TPEUs were characterized via gel permeation chromatography, FTIR, 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and tensile tests. The TPEUs exhibit T g between 12.4 °C and −40.4 °C, T m of up to 149.8 °C, and initial decomposition temperature over 239.4 °C. The tensile strength of the TPEUs reaches 38.39 MPa with a strain at break of 852.92%.
Polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs) Derived from Diphenolic Acid and Carbon Dioxide and Their Application in Solvent- and Water-Borne PHU Coatings

Abstract:To develop biobased polyurethanes (PUs) via a less hazardous, nonisocyanate route, herein we synthesize a series of biobased polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs) by reacting a new biobased cyclocarbonate (derived from renewable diphenolic acid and carbon dioxide) with ethylenediamine (EDA), diethylenetriamine (DETA), and isophoronediamine (IPDA), corresponding to PHU-EDA, PHU-DETA, and PHU-IPDA, respectively. Their molecular structures are identified from 1H NMR and FTIR analyses. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis shows that the molecular weights of these PHUs grow to as high as 5 kDa in a short reaction time (4 h) at a relatively low reaction temperature (80 degrees C). Subsequently, the solvent-borne (in acetone) coatings of these PHUs are successfully fabricated with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A as the cross-linker. The cured PHU coatings on aluminum panels show the high pencil hardness (up to 4 H), adhesive force (up to grade 1), glass transition as high as 116 degrees C, and initial thermal degradation temperature up to 190 degrees C. Furthermore, we realize the good dispersion of these PHUs in water by introducing chemically bonded carboxylic anions into the molecular backbone to form a stable aqueous emulsion with well-controlled particle sizes and further demonstrate its application in a water-borne PHU coating with good mechanical and thermal properties. Overall, we develop a facile yet effective method to prepare sustainable, biobased PHUs based on diphenolic acid and carbon dioxide via a safer, greener nonisocyanate route and furthermore demonstrated their use as solvent-borne coatings and greener water-borne coatings of reduced environmental impact.

Abstract:A simple and convenient non-isocyanate route is described to synthesize strong aliphatic crosslinked polyureas (cPUreas). A ring-opening reaction of mixed diamines with ethylene carbonate was carried out at 100 °C, and a transurethane polycondensation was followed at 170 °C, with different amino terminated polyurea oligomers (H 2 N-o-PUrea-NH 2 s) prepared. cPUreas were prepared further through a crosslinking reaction of H 2 N-o-PUrea-NH 2 s with 1,5-bis(maleimide)-2-methylpentane. The cPUreas were characterized by FT-IR, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile test. Different curing conditions were adopted to study the influence on the properties. The cPUreas exhibited tensile strength up to 91 MPa, glass transition temperature between 96 and 182 °C, and initial decomposition temperature at over 288 °C. Aliphatic cPUreas with excellent thermal and mechanical properties were successfully synthesized.

Abstract:Two nylon-6 oligomers having polymerization degrees of 4.99 and 3.55 terminated with H2N– and HO– groups (H2N-PA-OHs) were prepared by the ring-opening polymerization of caprolactam with ethanolamine at different molar ratios. These oligomers were transformed into HO–terminated nylon-6 oligomers (HO-PA-OHs) through reaction with excessive caprolactone. The transurethane polycondensation of HO-PA-OHs with a diurethanediol, i.e., 1,6-bis(hydroxyethyloxy carbonyl amino)hexane (BHCH), was carried out at 170 °C under normal pressure for 4 h and at 180 °C under a reduced pressure of 3 mmHg for 6.5 h. A series of aliphatic thermoplastic poly(amide urethane)s having different short nylon-6 segments (s-PAUs) was prepared. The s-PAUs were characterized by viscometry, gel permeation chromatography, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, solid 13C CP MAS NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide angle X-ray scattering and tensile tests. Results showed Mn above 29,762, Mw above 36,725, Tm between 128.73 and 171.69 °C, and initial decomposition temperature over 266.25 °C. Tensile strength reached 31.50 MPa with strain at break up to 447.49 %. Some urea linkages were formed during transurethane polycondensation.

Abstract:The use of low molecular weight (LMw) aliphatic diamines for the synthesis of polyurethane-urea elastomers (PUUEs) is an effective method for introducing abundant, strong hydrogen bonds with the aim of improving the thermal and mechanical properties of PUUEs. However, the reaction between isocyanates and LMw aliphatic diamines is too rapid to produce PUUEs. In this study, PUUEs incorporating LMw aliphatic diamines as chain extenders are prepared via the reversible reaction of CO2 with diamines. The phase separation, thermal properties, and thermomechanical and mechanical properties of polyurethane materials are investigated as the chain extender changed from diol to diamine. Replacing the diol chain extenders with diamine results in the formation of more abundant and stronger hydrogen bonds in PUUEs, which enables the assembly of long range ordered structures and improved microphase separation. The tensile strengths of PUUEs, from 8.4 to 13 MPa, are much higher than their corresponding polyurethanes, owing to the physical crosslinks formed by the more and stronger hydrogen bonds in the PUUEs.
Biomass-Based Polyureas Derived from Rigid Furfurylamine and Isomannide

Abstract:Polyureas are important commercial polymers that are widely used in construction, automobile industry, military field, and coatings. Biomass-based amines are attractive feedstock in the synthesis of versatile polyureas. Furan-based diamine and isomannide-derived (Im-derived) diamine can be interesting monomers for such materials due to their renewability and intrinsic rigidity, but they have not been extensively studied. Herein, biomass-based polyureas were prepared by polymerizing dicarbamates derived from furfurylamine and isomannide. The dicarbamates were produced in multigram-scale quantities with high purity and yield. A series of polyureas with reasonably high molecular weights were subsequently prepared by condensing the dicarbamates with various diamines. H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy confirmed the structure of the targeted copolymers. Exploration of thermal behavior by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that the synthetic polyureas showed good thermal stability and glass-transition temperatures (T-g) ranging from 11 to 213 degrees C.

Abstract:Bis (4-hydroxybutyl) terephthalate (BHBT) was synthesized from the condensation of dimethyl terephthalate with excessive 1,4-butanediol. Transurethane polycondensation of 1,6-bis (hydroxyethyloxy carbonyl amino) hexane (BHCH) with BHBT at different BHCH/BHBT molar ratios was carried out at 170 °C under a reduced pressure of 3 mmHg for different time. A series of non-isocyanate thermoplastic polyurethanes (NI-TPUs) containing dibutylene terephthalate units were prepared. The NI-TPUs were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide angle X-ray scattering, and tensile test. The NI-TPUs exhibited M n above 14200, M w above 19700, T g between 25.1 and 35.1 °C, T m from 123.8 °C to 141.1 °C, initial decomposition temperature over 251.7 °C, and tensile strength up to 37.89 MPa with a strain at break of 475.28 %. NI-TPUs with high T m, good tensile strength and good toughness were prepared. Introduction of dibutylene terephthalate units improved the mechanical properties obviously. Some urea linkages were formed during transurethane polycondensation because of the back-biting side reaction the -HNCOOCH2CH2OH terminal groups.

Abstract:A new diphenol monomer bis(4 ' -hydroxy-phenyl)-tolyene-2,4-diurea was synthesized by reaction of 2,4-toylene diisocyanate with p-aminophenol in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The product was characterized by elemental analysis (EA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and H-1-NMR. And a novel kind of liquid crystalline poly(urea-ester)s were obtained by using this monomer. By using a polarizing microscope with hot stage (POM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD) the polymers were proven to be nematic liquid crystal. A Non-Isocyanate Route to Poly(Ether Urethane): Synthesis and Effect of Chemical Structures of Hard Segment

Abstract:A series of non-isocyanate poly(ether urethane) (PEU) were prepared by an environmentally friendly route based on dimethyl carbonate, diols and a polyether. The effect of the chemical structure of polyurethane hard segments on the properties of this kind of PEU was systematically investigated in this work. Polyurethane hard segments with different structures were first prepared from hexamethylene di-carbamate (BHC) and different diols (butanediol, hexanediol, octanediol and decanediol). Subsequently, a series of non-isocyanate PEU were obtained by polycondensation of the polyurethane hard segments with the polyether soft segments (PTMG2000). The PEU were characterized by GPC, FT-IR, 1H NMR, DSC, WAXD, SAXS, AFM and tensile testing. The results show that the urea groups generated by the side reaction affect the degree of crystallization of hard segments by influencing the hydrogen bonding of the hard segments molecular chains. The degree of hard segment crystallization, in turn, affects the thermal and mechanical properties of the polymer. The urea group content is related to the carbon chain length of the diol used for the synthesis of hard segments. When butanediol is applied to synthesize hard segment, the hard segment of the resulting PEU is unable to crystallize. Therefore, the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of butanediol-based PEU is lowest among three, though it possesses the highest urea group content. When longer octanediol or decanediol is applied to synthesize the hard segment, the hard segments in the resulting polyether-based polyurethane are crystallizable and the resulting PEU possesses higher tensile strength.

Abstract:We report a new synthetic approach toward cyclic polyureas through alternating copolymerization of aziridines with tosyl isocyanate. Aziridines (ethyleneimine, and ( S )-2-benzylaziridine) react with tosyl isocyanate spontaneously in the absence of any catalyst to produce polyureas. The obtained polyureas exhibit an alternating structure as determined by NMR and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. MALDI-TOF analysis indicates that the synthesized polyureas are cyclic. A spontaneous zwitterionic copolymerization mechanism is proposed. DFT calculations reveal that the copolymerization of tosyl isocyanate with ethyleneimine is more kinetically and thermodynamically favored than 2-benzylaziridine.

Abstract:Abstract Ethyl formate is very effective for the formylation of amines and diamines to yield formamides and diformamides, respectively. Subsequent dehydrogenation of 1:1 mixtures of formamides and amines or diformamides and diamines with ruthenium pincer catalysts furnishes ureas and polyureas, respectively. This approach provides access to a large structural variety of ureas and polyureas because a wide range of primary amines and diamines are readily converted to the corresponding ureas and polyureas. Small molecule ureas were isolated in yields of up to 95%, whereas polyureas were isolated in lower yields (up to 68%) due to strong adhesion to the reaction flask and poor solubility impeding product removal. Furthermore, the ease with which hydrogen can be removed from the reaction medium enables the synthesis of polyureas with molecular weights that are among the highest reported to date ( M n up to 31,100 g mol −1 ). Notably, this synthetic approach does not necessitate high pressure conditions, simplifying equipment needed for their preparation, and it avoids the use of isocyanates, which have significant health concerns.

Abstract:Thermoplastic polycarbonate polyurethane elastomers (TPCUEs) are synthesized through a solvent-free non-isocyanate melt polycondensation route. The route starts with the synthesis of 1,6-bis(hydroxyethyloxycarbonylamino)hexane (BHCH) from ethylene carbonate and 1,6-hexanediamine, and then the TPCUEs are prepared by the melt polycondensation of BHCH and polycarbonate diols (PCDLs). The TPCUEs are characterized by GPC, FT-IR, 1 H NMR, XRD, AFM, DSC, TGA and tensile testing. The TPCUEs prepared have linear structures and high molecular weights, with Mn over 3.0 × 10 4 g mol −1 . And these TPCUEs exhibit excellent thermal and mechanical properties, with T g ranging from −18 to −1 °C, T m ranging from 93 to 122 °C, T d,5% over 240 °C, tensile strength between 28.1–47.3 Mpa, elongation at break above 1000%, Young's modulus between 13.8–32.7 Mpa and resilience at 200% fixed-length between 70–90%, which makes them a promising alternative to products synthesized through the isocyanate route. In addition, the effects of the hard segment contents and the molecular weights of soft segment on the properties of TPCUEs are researched.

The diphenol monomer, bis(4′-hydroxyphenol)-tolyene-2,4-diurea which has urea groups but no mesogenic group, was synthesized. It was then polymerized with terephaloyl chloride. The mesogenic group were formed during the polymerization.

Abstract:Most of the reported dynamic chemically cross-linked polymers, especially elastomers, have a low or mediate topology freezing temperature so that they will creep at high temperatures. In this study, via the bulk polymerization of commercial feedstocks such as aromatic amine-terminated polytetrahydrofuran and isocyanates, we obtained a family of polyureas with dynamic aniline-urea bonds varying from rigid plastics to elastomers. The dynamic polyureas exhibit vitrimer-like properties due to the low degree of network dissociation, possessing high topology freezing temperatures (over 170 C-degrees) and thermal stability. The polyureas based on dynamic bonds can be used for functional applications, such as surface grafting and thermoadaptive shape memory. The aniline-urea network provides a strategy for the preparation of high-performance recyclable functional polymers.

Abstract:Constructing responsive and adaptive materials by dynamic covalent bonds is an attractive strategy in material design. Here, we present a kind of dynamic covalent polyureas which can be prepared from the highly efficient polyaddition reaction of pyrazoles and diisocyanates at ambient temperature in the absence of a catalyst. Owing to multiphase structural design, poly(pyrazole-ureas) (PPzUs) show excellent mechanical properties and unique crystallization behavior. Besides, the crosslinked PPzUs can be successfully recycled upon heating (~130 °C) and the molecular-level blending of polyurea and polyurethane is realized. Theoretical studies prove that the reversibility of pyrazole-urea bonds (PzUBs) arises from the unique aromatic nature of pyrazole and the N-assisting intramolecular hydrogen transfer process. The PzUBs could further broaden the scope of dynamic covalent bonds and are very promising in the fields of dynamic materials.

Abstract:Non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) is one of the hot spots in the scientific research of polyurethane. In this work, mechanically regulable NIPU were prepared by ring-opening polymerization of cyclic carbonates via diamines. Cyclocarbonates with different functionalities were firstly synthesized by thiol-ene click reaction, which was characterized through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The controllable mechanical performance of NIPU films was obtained by the structure of the diamines and the functionality of the thiol groups. The results of swelling and differential scanning calorimetry experiments suggested that the control of functionality and reactivity endowed the material with an adjustable crosslinking density. The Young's modulus of the material could be regulated from 51.3 to 765.1 MPa. Furthermore, the studied films also showed good thermal stability. The present study provides some guidance for the preparation of non-isocyanate polyurethane coatings for different application scenarios.
