A Comparative Study of Kant, Mou Zongsan and Fu Weixun

Abstract:Fu Weixun's philosophy started with the questioning of Kant and their connection was Mou Zongsan. Fu Weixun held that the core of Kantianism was key to two doors but he was unsatisfied with the Kantian way of solving such problems. Mou Zongsan thought that Kantianism could not solve the problem of why man had the free will of morals because it lacked a thorough understanding of human heart. On the one hand Fu Weixun approved Mou Zongsan's understanding of Kant in this aspect, but on the other he thought key to two doors was too narrow. Thus, Fu Weixun favored key to multi-doors which accepted the pluralism of the worldly truth. This new idea could redress Mou Zongsan's partiality of moral idealism and dogmatism but its logical conclusion might finally break down some basic concepts of Kantianism. Therefore, the final solution to the problems of Kantianism should not follow the positivist approach of key to two doors but focus on life itself, which was Fu Weixun's approach to understanding life.
