Abstract:The performance of DSSCs can be improved if iodine species can be pre-stored in the polymer counter electrodes (CEs) since the I−/I3− redox couple is usually used as the mediator in electrolyte for DSSCs. In this work, such porous polypyrrole (PPy) CEs have been successfully synthesized by electrochemical method. Detailed mechanism about the electro-polymerization and film growth has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The influence of iodine species pre-stored in the film during polymerization on the properties of resultant PPy CEs (such as porous structure, doping state, and electrocatalytic activity) and, thereby, the device performance has been studied thoroughly. We envision that the results may help to facilitate the research and development of the polymer-based CEs used in DSSCs.
Electro-polymerization of Polypyrrole/multi-Wall Carbon Nanotube Counter Electrodes for Use in Platinum-Free Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:In the development of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), it is critically important, but remains challenging to discover new counter electrode (CE) materials to replace the expensive and precious platinum (Pt). Herein we electro-polymerize the polypyrrole (PPy) on the multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-coated F-doped tin oxide substrate by a facile cyclic voltammetry method to obtain the PPy/MWCNT composite CE. The resultant composite CE shows that the MWCNT is wrapped with 15 nm thickness of PPy nanoparticles, which takes advantage of the high surface area and good conductivity of the MWCNT and good catalytic activity of the PPy for the reduction of triiodide to iodide, providing the fast electron transport and diffusion channels and plenty of interfacial catalytic active sites. The DSSC based on the PPy/MWCNT composite CE shows an excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency of 7.15% under full sunlight illumination (100 mW cm (2), AM 1.5 G), which is much higher than that of the MWCNT (1.72%) and PPy (5.72%) based DSSCs, and 92.14% that of the Pt-based DSSC (7.76%). Facile construction of a polypyrrole-cobalt sulfide counter electrode for low-cost dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:A polypyrrole-cobalt sulfide composite counter electrode (CE) was prepared in this work. Firstly, polypyrrole (PPy) nanorods were prepared by an in situ polymerization method on FTO, then cobalt sulfide (CoS) nanoparticles were coated on PPy nanorods by the electrodeposition method. The DSSC with PPy-CoS CE exhibits superior photoelectric conversion efficiency than that based on platinum (Pt, one of common counter electrodes), which is 7.52%, improving more than 20% compared to Pt CE (6.19%). In addition, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements demonstrated that the PPy-CoS CE exhibited excellent catalytic performance for I3 -/I- solution.

Abstract:Hierarchical nanostructured polypyrrole (HNPPy) of spherical polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles anchored on the surface of PPy nanofiber network is prepared by a facile process and incorporated into dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) as Pt-free counter electrode. This unique hierarchical nanostructure can provide the fast electron-transport pathway and abundant electrocatalytic active sites simultaneously. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis demonstrates that the electrocatalytic activity of HNPPy electrode for the I-3 reduction is higher than that of PPy nanoparticles (PPyNPs) electrode and comparable to that of Pt electrode. As a consequence, the DSC fabricated with HNPPy counter electrode achieves a high conversion efficiency of 6.78%, which is close to the efficiency using Pt counter electrode. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In our present study, the composite film of MWCNTs/Ppy (multi-walled carbon nanotubes and polypyrrole) was proposed as CE (counter electrode) catalyst in DSSCs (dye-sensitized solar cells) to speed up the reduction of triiodide to iodide. The MWCNTs/Ppy composite film was synthesized and fabricated it on rigid fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates by using a facile electrochemical polymerization route, and served as CE in DSSCs. The unique structural characteristics including rough surface consisted of the numerous MWCNTs coated on Ppy nanoparticles guaranteed fast mass transport for the electrolyte, and enabled the MWCNTs/Ppy CE to speed up the reduction of triiodide to iodide. The electrochemical analyses came from cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the MWCNTs/Ppy CE possessed more excellent electrocatalytic activity, electrochemical stability and lower charge transfer resistance of 2.82 Ω cm2 in comparison with a sputtered-Pt CE. The DSSC assembled with the novel MWCNTs/Ppy CE exhibited a high light-electric conversion efficiency of 7.42% under the illumination of 100 mW cm−2, comparable to that of the DSSC based on sputtered-Pt electrode (6.85%). Therefore, the MWCNTs/Ppy composite film can be considered as a promising alternative CE for DSSC due to its high electrocatalytic performance and excellent electrochemical stability.

Abstract:In this work, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets are successfully introduced into the conductive polypyrrole (PPy) matrix as conductive channels and co-catalyst, through simple incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) into PPy and subsequent in situ reduction from GO/PPy to RGO/PPy composite film. The RGO/PPy film is fabricated as a counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells, and it exhibits excellent catalytic performance for reduction of triiodide. For this reason, the incorporated RGO sheets significantly improve short-circuit photocurrent density from 14.27 to 15.81 mA cm(-2) and power conversion efficiency from 7.11% to 8.14%, which is comparable with that for the cell based on a Pt cathode.

Abstract:A two-step approach is employed for quick and controllable electropolymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/polypyrrole (PPy) hollow micro-/nanohorns on fluorinated tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates as counter electrodes (CEs) for Pt-free dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). PPy films with hollow micro-/nanohorn arrays are grown on FTO glasses by a modified pulse potentiostatic method in the first step. Then PEDOT is potentiostatically polymerized onto them as the CEs. Owing to the relatively high catalytic activity of PEDOT and the high specific surface area of hollow micro-/nanohorn PPy (hPPy), the compound film shows electrocatalytic activity for I-3(-) reduction similar to that of Pt. Therefore, DSCs assembled with this CE exhibit comparable power conversion efficiency (7.08%) to DSCs with Pt CEs (6.88%). The PEDOT/PPy film with hollow micro-/nanohorn arrays can be considered to be a promising alternative CE material for Pt-free DSCs.

Abstract:For the purpose of replacing the precious Pt counter electrode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with higher energy conversion efficiency, multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polypyrrole (PPy) double layers film counter electrode (CE) was fabricated by electrophoresis and cyclic voltammetry (CV) layer by layer. Atom force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) demonstrated the morphologies of the composite electrode and Raman spectroscopy verified the PPy had come into being. The overall energy conversion efficiency of the DSSC employing the MWCNT/PPy CE reached 3.78%. Compared with a reference DSSC using single MWCNT film CE with efficiency of 2.68%, the energy conversion efficiency was increased by 41.04%. The result of impedance showed that the charge transfer resistance Rct of the MWCNT/PPy CE had the lowest value compared to that of MWCNT or PPy electrode. These results indicate that the composite film with high conductivity, high active surface area, and good catalytic properties for I3− reduction can potentially be used as the CE in a high-performance DSSC.

Abstract:Two kinds of prickly polyaniline samples, prickly polyaniline nanorods and microgranules, are prepared through the chemically oxidative polymerization method by regulating the concentration of aniline. Scanning electron microscopy images indicate that the diameter of prickly polyaniline nanorods (PPNRs) is about 80 nm and the size of prickly polyaniline microgranules (PPMGs) is about 400 nm. The as-prepared prickly polyaniline samples are subsequently explored as the Pt-free counter electrode materials for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry measurements demonstrate that PPNR electrode displays superior electrocatalytic activity for the I3 − reduction reaction to PPMG electrode, which can be attributed to the unique prickly nanorod structure that provides abundant electrocatalytic active sites and the fast charge transport pathway simultaneously. As a consequence, the DSC fabricated with PPNR counter electrode achieves a high conversion efficiency of 6.86% under illumination of 100 mW cm−2, which is close to the efficiency of a Pt electrode-based device. This work presents a promising way to develop Pt-free and high-efficiency counter electrode in DSCs.
Preparation, Characterization and Electrochemical Properties of Polypyrrole-Polystyrene Sulfonic Acid Composite Film

Abstract:Polypyrrole-polystyrene sulfonic acid (PPy-PSSA) composite films have been electrosynthesized in an aqueous solution of PSSA. The electro-active films exhibit cation exchange during the redox process. Infrared, Raman and energy-dispersive spectroscopic results demonstrated that the polyanion of PSS- is co-deposited into the PPy matrix and couldn't be stripped from the film extensively by dedoping, The doping level together with dipolaron content of the PPy-PSSA composite film increases during electrochemical polymerization process. SEM images revealed that the composite film has smooth and compact morphology and AFM pictures suggested that PPy chains are possibly grown perpendicular to the electrode surface. TGA tests indicated that the composite films has much better thermal stability than that of pure PPy. Furthermore, electrochemical studies showed that the relaxation process at certain holding potential has great effect on the shape of the cyclic voltammetric curves of PPy-PSSA composite film. The composite film exhibits cation and anion exchange during the redox process after undergoing the relaxation step. It is more difficult for divalent anion to enter the polymer matrix than a univalent ion, and a large cation such as (CH3CH2CH2CH2)(4)N+ cannot be involved in the ion exchange process.
Honeycomb-like Polypyrrole/multi-Wall Carbon Nanotube Films As an Effective Counter Electrode in Bifacial Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Honeycomb-like polypyrrole/multi-wall carbon nanotube (PPy/MWCNT) film demonstrates as an efficient and semitransparent counter electrode (CE) in bifacial dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), which is first fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass by a facile method using a sacrificial template of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The results from ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer and cyclic voltammetry measurements testify that the honeycomb-like PPy/MWCNT film possesses high transparency for the backside illumination and wonderful electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of triiodide (I 3 − ) to iodide (I − ) in the bifacial DSSC. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate that the honeycomb-like nanostructure combining with the MWCNT decreases the resistance of the PPy/MWCNT film for the transfer of electrons from the external circuit back to the redox electrolyte. The bifacial DSSC based on the honeycomb-like PPy/MWCNT CE achieves 7.07 and 4.11% of the front and rear efficiencies, respectively, which are higher than those of the bifacial DSSC based on the flat PPy CE (5.78 and 3.07%, respectively).

Abstract:Iron pyrite has been the material of interest in the solar community due to its optical properties and abundance. However, the progress is marred due to the lack of control on the surface and intrinsic chemistry of pyrite. In this report, we show iron pyrite as an efficient counter electrode (CE) material alternative to the conventional Pt and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) CEs in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Pyrite film CEs prepared by spray pyrolysis are utilized in I3(-)/I(-) and Co(III)/Co(II) electrolyte-mediated DSSCs. From cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy studies, the catalytic activity is found to be comparable with that of Pt and PEDOT in I3(-)/I(-) and Co(III)/Co(II) electrolyte, respectively. With the I3(-)/I(-) electrolyte, photoconversion efficiency is found to be 8.0% for the pyrite CE and 7.5% for Pt, whereas with Co(III)/Co(II) redox DSSCs, efficiency is found to be the same for both pyrite and PEDOT (6.3%). The excellent performance of the pyrite CE in both the systems makes it a distinctive choice among the various CE materials studied.

Abstract:The star-shape of 3,6-bis(5-(4,4′-bis(3-azidopropyl)-[1,1′:3′,1′-terphenyl]-5′-yl)-thien-2-yl)-2,5-bis(2-ethylhexyl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione (DPPTPTA) is combined with electrospun bimetallic copper-cobalt phosphide decorated on carbon nanofibers (CuCoP/CNF) and used as a modified layer ( DPPTPTA@CuCoP/CNF ) on the platinum (Pt) coated counter electrode (CE) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). DPPTPTA possesses ladder-like energy levels for efficient charge separation while CuCoP/CNF has a high electrocatalytic activity and sufficient electrical conductivity. Overall, the DPPTPTA@CuCoP/CNF heterostructure exhibits attractive performance needed for the CE of DSSCs. From electrochemical analysis, the DPPTPTA@CuCoP/CNF modified layer ensures efficient charge transfer at the CE/electrolyte interface with low charge transfer resistance. Moreover, the CE/electrolyte interface possesses a small electron recombination rate, since the modified layer has good charge separation ability. Under 1 sun (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm -2 ) conditions, the pertinent DSSC achieved a photoelectric conversion efficiency ( η ) of 9.50%, open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 827 mV, short-circuit current density ( J SC ) of 16.25 mA cm -2 , and fill factor ( FF ) of 0.71. Under indoor conditions, the η value at 6,000 lux (1.89 mW cm -2 ) reached 25.44%. Finally, the porous three-dimensional nanofiber structure of the modified layer can ensure long-term at-rest stability (90% retention after 3,000 h). Thus, the DPPTPTA@CuCoP/CNF modified layer-based DSSC can be considered as a promising device for possible renewable energy.

Abstract:A high-performance Pt-free counter electrode (CE) based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) film for plastic dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) has been developed via a facile solid-state polymerization (SSP) approach. The polymerization was simply initiated by sintering the monomer, 2,5-dibromo-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (DBEDOT), at the temperature of 80 C, which can be applied on the plastic substrate. The cyclic voltammetry measurements revealed that the catalytic activity of the SSP-PEDOT CE for triiodide reduction is comparable with that of the Pt CE. Under optimized conditions, the power conversion efficiency of a DSC with a N719-sensitized TiO2 photoanode and the SSP-PEDOT CE is 7.04% measured under standard 1 sun illumination (100 mW cm(-2), AM 1.5), which is very close to that of the device fabricated under the same conditions with a conventional thermally deposited Pt CE (7.35%). Furthermore, taking advantage of the compatibility of the SSP-PEDOT with the plastic substrates, a full plastic N719-sensitized TiO2 solar cell was demonstrated, and an efficiency of 4.65% was achieved, which is comparable with the performance of a plastic DSC with a sputter-deposited Pt CE (5.38%). These results demonstrated that solid-state polymerization initiated at low temperature is a facile and low-cost method of fabricating the high-performance Pt-free CEs for plastic DSCs.

Abstract:Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films were synthesized onto the fluorinated tin oxide (FTO) substrates as counter electrodes (CEs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) through an aqueous galvanostatic polymerization technique. Polymerization time was employed to control the surface morphologies and performances of the PEDOT films. The PEDOT electrodes showed faster reaction rate and higher electrocatalytic activity for 1(3)(-) reduction as the polymerization time increased, which contributed to the increase of the open circuit voltage (V-oc) for the DSSCs. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicated that charge transfer resistance (R-ct) at CE/electrolyte interface decreased and then rebounded with the increasing polymerization time. Thus the short circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) of the DSSCs changed with the same trend. The energy conversion efficiency of the DSSC based on PEDOT CE up to 6.46% was achieved, which was higher than that based on Pt CE (6.33%).
