Abstract:First‐principles calculations are performed to investigate the elastic anisotropy, and thermodynamic properties of chromium tetraboride (CrB4) under extreme P–T conditions. The calculated equilibrium lattice and the normalized crystal parameters as a function of pressure are in good agreement with the available experimental and theoretical data. Elastic constants Cij are calculated in the pressure range of 0–50 GPa, and the bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, and Young's modulus E are also obtained according to the Voigt–Reuss–Hill (VRH) approximation. Anisotropic indexes are employed to characterize the mechanical anisotropy. The bulk modulus and Young's modulus as a function of crystal orientations are also investigated. The obtained results suggest that CrB4 exhibits a pronounced elastic anisotropy. It is strongest along the b‐axis in response to compression loading, and the {100} and {001} shear planes might be the cleavage planes. The elastic anisotropy of CrB4 may possibly limit its applications. Using the quasiharmonic Debye model, thermodynamic properties like Debye temperature, Grüneisen parameter, heat capacity, and expansion coefficient are also systematically explored under extreme P–T conditions.

Abstract:In this work, adsorption-diffusion behavior of Boron atom along and into W surface as well as the basic Boron atom absorption-diffusion behavior in W bulk were studied using first-principles density functional theory and climbing image nudged elastic band (CI-NEB) method. The result indicates that the octahedral interstice is the most stable position for B atom absorption and the energy barrier for B atom diffusing between two neighboring octahedral interstices in W bulk is 2.476 eV. For the adsorption behavior of Boron atom on W surface, Hollow site is the most stable adsorption position for W (1 0 0) surface and W (1 1 0) surface, while Hollow-II Site is the most stable adsorption position for W (1 1 1) surface. When B atom diffusing along W surface, the energy barrier for B atom diffusing along W (1 0 0) surface is the largest followed by W (1 1 0) surface and W (1 1 1) surface. During B atom diffusion into W surface, the needed energies for B atom diffusing into W (1 0 0) surface, W (1 1 0) surface and W (1 1 1) surface are 2.231 eV, 1.87 eV and 1.63 eV, respectively. After B atom diffuses to the 3rd, 3rd and 4th atomic layer below W (1 0 0) surface, W (1 1 0) surface and W (1 1 1) surface, the subsequent diffusion behavior shows the bulk diffusion characteristic. Beside, atomic diffusion coefficient D indicates that no matter diffusing along or into W surface, W (1 1 1) surface provides the best diffusion condition.

Study on Structure, Chemical Bond and Thermoelectric Property of Boron Carbides

Abstract:The correlation between structure, chemical bond and thermoelectric properties of boron carbides is discussed based on structural calculations with self-consistent-field discrete variation (SCF-DV-X-a) method, one of calculation methods of molecular orbital in quantum chemistry. Nine different structural models far calculation are proposed. The calculated results show that the chain is negatively charged and the icosahedron is positively charged, i. e. [C-B-B(C)](delta-) - [B11B(C)](delta+). The total strength of the five covalent bonds between an atom and its five co-ordinating atoms in the icosahedra is slightly larger than the three times of strength of a single bond. The bond between icosahedron and chain or between icosahedra is single bond, but the bond between boron in the middle of chain and carbon or other boron has the characteristic of a double bond. Models 3 and 4 (C-B-B-B11C) are the most stable and easily formed, and the charges of icosahedra of these two models are the lowest, so the disproportionation reaction occurs and the bipolaron forms easily, and the concentration of the carriers and conductivity are the largest, which is consistent with the experimental result that the conductivity has the largest value when the cat-ban content is 13.3%.
Interaction of Boron with Graphite: A Van Der Waals Density Functional Study

Abstract:Boron doping has been widely investigated to improve oxidation resistance of graphite. In this work the interaction of boron with graphite is investigated by a van der Waals density-functional approach (vdW-DF). The traditional density-functional theory (DFT) is well accounted for the binding in boron substituted graphite. However, to investigate the boron atom on graphite surface and the interstitial impurities require use of a description of graphite interlayer binding. Traditional DFT cannot describe the vdW physics, for instance, GGA calculations show no relevant binding between graphite sheets. LDA shows some binding, but they fail to provide an accurate account of vdW forces. In this paper, we compare the calculation results of graphite lattice constant and cohesive energy by several functionals, it shows that vdW-DF such as two optimized functionals optB88-vdW and optB86b-vdW give much improved results than traditional DFT. The vdW-DF approach is then applied to study the interaction of boron with graphite. Boron adsorption, substitution, and intercalation are discussed in terms of structural parameters and electronic structures. When adsorbing on graphite surface, boron behaves as pi electron acceptor. The pi electron approaches boron atom because of more electropositive of boron than carbon. For substitution situation, the hole introduced by boron mainly concentrates on boron and the nearest three carbon atoms. The B-doped graphite system with the hole has less ability to offer electrons to oxygen, ultimately resulted in the inhibition of carbon oxidation. For interstitial doping, vdW-DFs show more accurate formation energy than LDA. PBE functional cannot describe the interstitial boron in graphite reasonably because of the ignoring binding of graphite sheets. The investigation of electron structures of boron doped graphite will play an important role in understanding the oxidation mechanism in further study. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Under pressure of 1×10-6-10-5pa, a thin film of tungsten carbide is formed on the surface of tungsten tip of field emission microscopy after certain annealing treatment. Typical field emission patterns of tungsten carbide thin film is observed, and its I-V behavior and Fowler-Nordheim plot is measured. Using transmission electron microscopy, we measure the curvature radius of emission tip, and estimate the ratio factor β with an empirical formula, then calculate the work function ψ of tungsten carbide thin film to be 379eV according to Fowler-Nordheim formula.
Phase Transitions of Boron Carbide: Pair Interaction Model of High Carbon Limit

Abstract:Boron Carbide exhibits a broad composition range, implying a degree of intrinsic substitutional disorder. While the observed phase has rhombohedral symmetry (space group R3(bar)m), the enthalpy minimizing structure has lower, monoclinic, symmetry (space group Cm). The crystallographic primitive cell consists of a 12-atom icosahedron placed at the vertex of a rhombohedral lattice, together with a 3-atom chain along the 3-fold axis. In the limit of high carbon content, approaching 20% carbon, the icosahedra are usually of type B11Cp, where the p indicates the carbon resides on a polar site, while the chains are of type C-B-C. We establish an atomic interaction model for this composition limit, fit to density functional theory total energies, that allows us to investigate the substitutional disorder using Monte Carlo simulations augmented by multiple histogram analysis. We find that the low temperature monoclinic Cm structure disorders through a pair of phase transitions, first via a 3-state Potts-like transition to space group R3m, then via an Ising-like transition to the experimentally observed R3(bar)m symmetry. The R3m and Cm phases are electrically polarized, while the high temperature R3(bar)m phase is nonpolar.

Abstract:Crystal structure searching and ab initio calculations have been used here to explore low-energy structures of boron carbides under high pressure. Under pressures of 85-110 GPa, a metastable B6C with R (3) over barm symmetry is found to be energetically more stable than the mixture of previous B4C and elemental boron. This B6C is a rhombohedral structure and contains mooncake-like B-24 clusters with stuffing of C-2 pairs. The mechanical and dynamical stabilities of this structure at ambient pressure are confirmed by its elastic constants and phonon dispersions. The bulk modulus and shear modulus of this newly predicted B6C at ambient pressure reach high values of 291 GPa and 272 GPa, respectively. The Vickers hardness is calculated to be around 48 GPa, and its melting temperature at ambient pressure is estimated to be around 2500 K, indicating that this metastable B6C is a potential superhard material with very good thermal stability. Interestingly, this superhard B6C structure is also found to be superconducting and its superconducting critical temperature (T-c) is evaluated to be around 12.5 K at ambient pressure by electron-phonon coupling. Phase Diagram of Boron Carbide With Variable Carbon Composition

Abstract:Boron carbide exhibits intrinsic substitutional disorder over a broad composition range. The structure consists of 12-atom icosahedra placed at the vertices of a rhombohedral lattice, together with a 3-atom chain along the 3-fold axis. In the high carbon limit, one or two carbons can replace borons on the icosahedra while the chains are primarily of type C-B-C. We fit an interatomic pair interaction model to density functional theory total energies to investigate the substitutional carbon disorder. Monte Carlo simulations with sampling improved by replica exchange and augmented by 2d multiple histogram analysis, predicts three phases. The low temperature, high carbon composition monoclinic Cm "tilted polar" structure disorders through a pair of phase transitions, first via an Ising-like transition to a "bipolar" state with space group C2/m, then via a first order 3-state Potts-like transition to the experimentally observed "nonpolar" \bar{R}3m symmetry.

Role of surfaces and interfaces on the Raman spectra of boron carbide

Abstract:The influence of surfaces and interfaces on the Raman spectra of boron carbide crystal is studied employing first-principles calculations. Surfaces based on {10-11} planes and {01-12} planes are considered. The average energy of the {01-12} surfaces (3.26 J/m 2 ) agrees with the experimentally reported surface energy (3.21 J/m 2 ). Two peaks are observed at ∼ 270 cm −1 and ∼ 320 cm −1 in the calculated Raman spectra for the supercells built on the {01-12} planes. This result suggests that the experimentally observed Raman peaks at these two frequencies are more likely to originate from the surface. Two Raman peaks experimentally observed at ∼ 1330 cm −1 and ∼ 1520 cm −1 in the amorphized samples were reproduced in the Raman spectra calculated for the supercells built on the {10-11} planes. Therefore, the experimentally observed new Raman activity at ∼ 1330 cm −1 and ∼ 1520 cm −1 is more likely to originate from the interface between the amorphous and crystalline regions.

Synthesis and Thermal Oxidation Resistance of Boron-Rich Boron-Carbide Material

Abstract:A boron-rich boron-carbide material (B4+δC) was synthesized by spark plasma sintering of a ball-milled mixture of high-purity boron powder and graphitic carbon at a pressure of 7 MPa and a temperature of 1930 °C. This high-pressure, high-temperature synthesized material was recovered and characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Vickers hardness measurements, and thermal oxidation studies. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed a single-phase rhombohedral structure (space group R-3m) with lattice parameters in hexagonal representation as a = 5.609 ± 0.007 Å and c = 12.082 ± 0.02 Å. The experimental lattice parameters result in a value of δ = 0.55, or the composition of the synthesized compound as B4.55C. The high-resolution scans of boron binding energy reveal the existence of a B-C bond at 188.5 eV. Raman spectroscopy reveals the existence of a 386 cm-1 vibrational mode representative of C-B-B linear chain formation due to excess boron in the lattice. The measured Vickers microhardness at a load of 200 gf shows a high hardness value of 33.8 ± 2.3 GPa. Thermal gravimetric studies on B4.55C were conducted at a temperature of 1300 °C in a compressed dry air environment, and its behavior is compared to other high-temperature ceramic materials such as high-entropy transition metal boride. The high neutron absorption cross section, high melting point, high mechanical strength, and thermal oxidation resistance make this material ideal for applications in extreme environments.

Abstract:First-principles approach is demonstrated to calculate the work function of Bi2Te3. The reference potential and the vacuum energy levels are extracted from the Bi2Te3 (0001) surface structure using the reference potential method based on the density functional theory. The one-shot GOWO many-body perturbation theory is used to place the bulk band edge energies with respect to the reference level and the vacuum energy. At last, the work function of 5.301 - 5.131 eV is predicted for Bi2Te3 (0001) surface and compared to various elements.

Abstract:Abstract The change in electron affinity and band bending as a result of atmosphere and fullerene (C 60 F 48 ) induced surface conductivity on H‐terminated (100) diamond is determined by simultaneously measuring the work function ( ϕ ) and C1s core level shift for both intrinsic and boron doped diamond. Changes in work function as a result of surface transfer doping are shown to not only reflect variations in the position of the surface Fermi level as reported by earlier investigations but also changes in the electron affinity, with the latter accounting for up to 0.63 eV of the highest observed change in ϕ of 1.45 eV.
Prediction of Orientational Phase Transition in Boron Carbide

Abstract:The assessed binary phase diagram of boron-carbon exhibits a single alloy phase designated "B4C" with rhombohedral symmetry occupying a broad composition range that falls just short of the nominal carbon content of 20%. As this composition range is nearly temperature independent, the phase diagram suggests a violation of the third law of thermodynamics, which typically requires compounds to achieve a definite stoichiometry at low temperatures. By means of first principles total energy calculations we predict the existence of two stoichiometric phases at T=0K: one of composition B4C with monoclinic symmetry; the other of composition B13C2 with rhombohedral symmetry. Using statistical mechanics to extend to finite temperatures, we demonstrate that the monoclinic phase reverts to the rhombohedral phase above T=600K, along with a slight reduction on carbon content.

Hardness of FeB4: Density Functional Theory Investigation

Abstract:A recent experimental study reported the successful synthesis of an orthorhombic FeB4 with a high hardness of 62(5) GPa [H. Gou et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 157002 (2013)], which has reignited extensive interests on whether transition-metal borides compounds will become superhard materials. However, it is contradicted with some theoretical studies suggesting transition-metal boron compounds are unlikely to become superhard materials. Here, we examined structural and electronic properties of FeB4 using density functional theory. The electronic calculations show the good metallicity and covalent Fe-B bonding. Meanwhile, we extensively investigated stress-strain relations of FeB4 under various tensile and shear loading directions. The calculated weakest tensile and shear stresses are 40 GPa and 25 GPa, respectively. Further simulations (e.g., electron localization function and bond length along the weakest loading direction) on FeB4 show the weak Fe-B bonding is responsible for this low hardness. Moreover, these results are consistent with the value of Vickers hardness (11.7-32.3 GPa) by employing different empirical hardness models and below the superhardness threshold of 40 GPa. Our current results suggest FeB4 is a hard material and unlikely to become superhard (>40 GPa).

Abstract:In this work, employing density functional theory (DFT) simulations and calculations, a thorough analysis of surface relaxation, electronic structure, and charge distribution on various low-index surfaces of AlB 2 was performed. It reveals the existence of uniform internal structures on the Al-(0001) and B-(0001) surfaces, while revealing the non-uniform nature of the Al-(10 1 ̅ 0) and B-(10 1 ̅ 0) surfaces. Furthermore, the (11 2 ̅ 0) surface has a relatively unstable configuration, characterized by a notable propensity for Al atoms to migrate more freely. Besides, the stability of these surfaces under different chemical potential conditions was also explored. It is worth noting that, in the Al-rich condition, the Al-(0001) surface assumes thermodynamic favorability, whereas in the B-rich condition, the B-(0001) surface exhibits higher stability. The calculation of the work function emphasizes the unique characteristics of the B-(0001) surface, since it has the highest work function. This observation indicates that the electron release energy from this surface is relatively high, implying unique properties and promising application potential.

Abstract:Boron nitride nanocrystalline thin-film is a kind of wide bandgap semiconductor material with important applications. Before implementation of BN applications, determining the BN Work function and electron affinity are very necessary. In this paper, these properties of sp(2)-bonded nanocrystalline BN were studied. Based on the data from Kelvin Probe and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy measurements, the preliminary results of Fermi level and electron affinity can be obtained. Furthermore, we utilized Metal-Semiconductor (MS) contact as an access to validate these results. The MS contact Cu/BN schottky junction is analyzed based on the MS contact Thermionic Emission (TE) model. According to the relationship between current and temperature under different voltage, the value of field independent barrier height can be evaluated as 0.59eV. Consider all the data, we can calculate the conduction band minimum (CBM), which is also named as electron affinity, and valence band maximum (VBM) of BN as -3.74eV and -9.60eV respectively, relative to vacuum energy level. Local stiffness and work function variations of hexagonal boron nitride on Cu(111)

Abstract:Combined scanning tunnelling and atomic force microscopy using a qPlus sensor enables the measurement of electronic and mechanic properties of two-dimensional materials at the nanoscale. In this work, we study hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN), an atomically thin 2D layer, that is van der Waals-coupled to a Cu(111) surface. The system is of interest as a decoupling layer for functional 2D heterostructures due to the preservation of the h -BN bandgap and as a template for atomic and molecular adsorbates owing to its local electronic trapping potential due to the in-plane electric field. We obtain work function (Φ) variations on the h -BN/Cu(111) superstructure of the order of 100 meV using two independent methods, namely the shift of field emission resonances and the contact potential difference measured by Kelvin probe force microscopy. Using 3D force profiles of the same area we determine the relative stiffness of the Moiré region allowing us to analyse both electronic and mechanical properties of the 2D layer simultaneously. We obtain a sheet stiffness of 9.4 ± 0.9 N·m −1 , which is one order of magnitude higher than the one obtained for h -BN/Rh(111). Using constant force maps we are able to derive height profiles of h -BN/Cu(111) showing that the system has a corrugation of 0.6 ± 0.2 Å, which helps to demystify the discussion around the flatness of the h -BN/Cu(111) substrate.

Theoretical phase diagram of boron carbide from ambient to high pressure and temperature

Abstract:The phase diagram of boron carbide is calculated within the density functional theory as a function of temperature and pressure up to 80 GPa, accounting for icosahedral, graphitelike, and diamondlike atomic structures. Only some icosahedral phases turn out to be thermodynamically stable with atomic carbon concentrations (c) of 8.7% (B10.5C), 13.0% (B6.7C), 20% (B4C), and 28.6% (B2.5C), respectively. Their respective ranges of stability under pressure and temperature are calculated, and the theoretical T-P-c phase diagram boundaries are discussed. At ambient conditions, the introduction in the phase diagram of the new phase B10.5C with an ordered crystalline motif of 414 atoms is shown to bring the theoretical solubility range of carbon in boron close to the experimental one. The link with the experimental phase diagram consisting of one single phase having the <math> R 3 ¯ m</math> space group is discussed, and the concept of partial occupation of Wyckoff's site is introduced. At high pressure, the phase diagram is defined by a new carbon-rich phase B2.5C, which is stabilized by both pressure and temperature in our calculations. All of the other diamond and graphite phases reported previously turn out to be thermodynamically unstable in our calculations, although some of them are observed in high pressure experiments.

Work Function Trends and New Low Work Function Boride and Nitride Materials for Electron Emission Applications

Abstract:LaB6 has been used as a commercial electron emitter for decades. Despite the large number of studies on the work function of LaB6, there is no comprehensive understanding of work function trends in the hexaboride materials family. In this study, we use Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to calculated trends of rare earth hexaboride work function and rationalize these trends based on the electronegativity of the metal element. We predict that alloying LaB6 with Ba can further lower the work function by ~0.2 eV. Interestingly, we find that alloyed (La, Ba)B6 can have lower work functions than either LaB6 or BaB6, benefitting from an enhanced surface dipole due to metal element size mismatch. In addition to hexaborides we also investigate work function trends of similar materials families, namely tetraborides and transition metal nitrides, which, like hexaborides, are electrically conductive and refractory and thus may also be promising materials for electron emission applications. We find that tetraborides consistently have higher work functions than their hexaboride analogues as the tetraborides having less ionic bonding and smaller positive surface dipoles. Finally, we find that HfN has a low work function of about 2.2 eV, making HfN a potentially promising new electron emitter material.
