Abstract:The proton is arguably the most fundamental of nature's readily detectable building blocks. It is at the heart of every nucleus and has never been observed to decay. It is nevertheless a composite object, defined by its valence-quark content: u+u+d--i.e., two up (u) quarks and one down (d) quark; and the manner by which they influence, inter alia, the distribution of charge and magnetization within this bound state. Much of novelty has recently been learned about these distributions; and it now appears possible that the proton's momentum-space charge distribution possesses a zero. Experiments in the coming decade should answer critical questions posed by this and related advances; we explain how such new information may assist in charting the origin and impact of key emergent phenomena within the strong interaction. Specifically, we show that the possible existence and location of a zero in the proton's electric form factor are a measure of nonperturbative features of the quark-quark interaction in the standard model, with particular sensitivity to the running of the dressed-quark mass.

Abstract:The internal structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) remains one of the greatest outstanding problems in modern nuclear physics. By scattering high-energy electrons off a proton we are able to resolve its fundamental constituents and probe their momenta and positions. Here we investigate the dynamics of quarks and gluons inside nucleons using deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)-a highly virtual photon scatters off the proton, which subsequently radiates a photon. DVCS interferes with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) process, where the photon is emitted by the electron rather than the proton. We report herein the full determination of the BH-DVCS interference by exploiting the distinct energy dependences of the DVCS and BH amplitudes. In the regime where the scattering is expected to occur off a single quark, measurements show an intriguing sensitivity to gluons, the carriers of the strong interaction.

Abstract:Understanding why the scale of emergent hadron mass is obvious in the proton but hidden in the pion may rest on mapping the distribution functions (DFs) of all partons within the pion and comparing them with those in the proton; and since glue provides binding in quantum chromodynamics, the glue DF could play a special role. Producing reliable predictions for the proton's DFs is difficult because the proton is a three-valence-body bound-state problem. As sketched herein, the situation for the pion, a two-valence-body problem, is much better, with continuum and lattice predictions for the valence-quark and glue DFs in agreement. This beginning of theory alignment is timely because experimental facilities now either in operation or planning promise to realize the longstanding goal of providing pion targets, thereby enabling precision experimental tests of rigorous theory predictions concerning Nature's most fundamental Nambu-Goldstone bosons.

Abstract:The proton spin puzzle has inspired a vast programme of experiments and theoretical work challenging our understanding of QCD and its role in the structure of hadrons.The proton's internal spin structure is connected to chiral symmetry and, through gluon degrees of freedom in the flavour singlet channel, to the physics of the $\eta'$ meson. Why do quarks contribute just about one third of the proton's spin? Why are $\eta'$ mesons and their interactions so sensitive to gluonic degrees of freedom? We review the status of these topics and some key observables for forthcoming experiments.

Abstract:Since we entered the 21st century,our understanding of the state of matter at the most fundamental level has been significantly deepened,mainly due to the successful running of the relativistic heavy-ion collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the U.S.and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.In particular,a new state of matter,the so-called quark-gluon plasma,has been extensively investigated,and many new and important achievements have been made.In this article we shall discuss the following points:1) the strong interaction and phase structure of quantum chromodynamics,2) the various properties of the quark-gluon plasma,and 3) the experimental signals of the quark-gluon plasma in high energy nuclear collisions.

Abstract:In the early 1960s particle physicists found that they had wandered into a jungle. They were confronted by a bewildering array of particles called hadrons that did not appear to follow any discernible pattern. Murray Gell-Mann eventually tamed this hadronic jungle by proposing that all hadrons are made up of combinations of more fundamental particles called quarks: mesons contain a quark and an antiquark, while baryons contain three quarks. Some physicists found this bold hypothesis difficult to swallow at first, but for four decades these two basic "body plans"have been more or less adequate to accommodate the many new hadrons that have turned up in experiments.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to review briefly the nature of protons: creation at the Big Bang, abundance, physical characteristics, internal components, and life span. Several particle discoveries by proton as the experimental tool are considered. Protons play important roles in science, medicine, and industry. This article was prompted by my experience in the curative treatment of cancer patients by protons and my interest in the nature of protons as particles. The latter has been stimulated by many discussions with particle physicists and reading related books and journals. Protons in our universe number ≈10(80). Protons were created at 10(-6) -1 second after the Big Bang at ≈1.37 × 10(10) years beforethe present. Proton life span has been experimentally determined to be ≥10(34) years; that is, the age of the universe is 10(-24)th of the minimum life span of a proton. The abundance of the elements is hydrogen, ≈74%; helium, ≈24%; and heavier atoms, ≈2%. Accordingly, protons are the dominant baryonic subatomic particle in the universe because ≈87% are protons. They are in each atom in our universe and thus involved in virtually every activity of matter in the visible universe, including life on our planet. Protons were discovered in 1919. In 1968, they were determined to be composed of even smaller particles, principally quarks and gluons. Protons have been the experimental tool in the discoveries of quarks (charm, bottom, and top), bosons (W(+), W(-), Z(0), and Higgs), antiprotons, and antineutrons. Industrial applications of protons are numerous and important. Additionally, protons are well appreciated in medicine for their role in radiation oncology and in magnetic resonance imaging. Protons are the dominant baryonic subatomic particle in the visible universe, comprising ≈87% of the particle mass. They are present in each atom of our universe and thus a participant in every activity involving matter.
On the Glue Content in Heavy Quarkonia

Abstract:Starting with two coupled Bethe-Salpeter equations for the quark-antiquark, and for the quark-glue-antiquark component of the quarkonium, we solve the bound state equations perturbatively. The resulting admixture of glue can be partially understood in a semiclassical way, one has, however, to take care of the different use of time ordered versus retarded Green functions. Subtle questions concerning the precise definition of the equal time wave function arise, because the wave function for the Coulomb gluon is discontinuous with respect to the relative time of the gluon. A striking feature is that a one loop non abelian graph contributes to the same order as tree graphs, because the couplings of transverse gluons in the tree graphs are suppressed in the non relativistic bound state, while the higher order loop graph can couple to quarks via non suppressed Coulomb gluons. We also calculate the amplitude for quark and antiquark at zero distance in the quark-glue-antiquark component of the P-state. This quantity is of importance for annihilation decays of P-states. It shows a remarkable compensation between the tree graph and the non abelian loop graph contribution. An extension of our results to include non perturbative effects is possible.

Abstract:Fermi helped establish a new framework for understanding matter, based on quantum theory. This framework refines and improves traditional atomism in two crucial respects. First, the elementary constituents of matter belong to a very small number of classes, and all objects of a given class (e.g., all electrons) are rigorously identical, indeed indistinguishable. This profound identity is demonstrated empirically through the phenomena of quantum statistics, and is explained by the principles of free quantum field theory. Second, objects of one class can mutate into objects of other classes. Such mutability can be understood as manifesting interacting quantum field theory. Fermi contributed to establishing theoretical foundations for the new viewpoint, through his work on quantum statistics and quantum field theory, and to its fruitful application and empirical validation, through his work on beta decay, nuclear transmutation, and primeval strong interaction theory.

Abstract:The visible Universe is largely characterised by a single mass scale, namely, the proton mass, m p . Contemporary theory suggests that m p emerges as a consequence of gluon self-interactions, which are a defining characteristic of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions in the Standard Model. However, the proton is not elementary. Its mass appears as a corollary of other, more basic emergent phenomena latent in the QCD Lagrangian, e.g. generation of nuclear-size gluon and quark mass-scales, and a unique effective charge that may describe QCD interactions at all accessible momentum scales. These remarks are explained herein, and focusing on the distribution amplitudes and functions of π and K mesons, promising paths for their empirical verification are elucidated. Connected therewith, in anticipation that production of J / ψ -mesons using π and K beams can provide access to the gluon distributions in these pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone modes, predictions for all π and K distribution functions are provided at the scale ζ = m J / ψ .
