Abstract:In the early 1960s particle physicists found that they had wandered into a jungle. They were confronted by a bewildering array of particles called hadrons that did not appear to follow any discernible pattern. Murray Gell-Mann eventually tamed this hadronic jungle by proposing that all hadrons are made up of combinations of more fundamental particles called quarks: mesons contain a quark and an antiquark, while baryons contain three quarks. Some physicists found this bold hypothesis difficult to swallow at first, but for four decades these two basic "body plans"have been more or less adequate to accommodate the many new hadrons that have turned up in experiments.

Abstract:Scores of exotic hadrons, particularly tetraquarks and pentaquarks in the heavy-quark sector, have been observed in the past 20 years, and more continue to be discovered to this day. Unlike mesons and baryons, such exotics are not mandated to exist under our current understanding of QCD, meaning that each new discovery presents fresh insights into the expansive possibilities of strong-interaction physics. Even the basic architecture of these multiquark states remains an open question. Here we discuss the merits and deficiencies of their best-known dynamical descriptions, recognizing that the eventual universal model for exotics will almost certainly require the synthesis of more than one fundamental paradigm.

Abstract:Assuming that the strong interactions are mediated by a color-SU(3) gauge theory, we consider unusual possibilities for the constituents. The simplest possibility, "shiny" quarks, is that some new quarks are not triplets under color. We analyze the production and signatures for this possibility. Special attention is drawn to the spectroscopy of hadrons containing shiny quarks, some of which are absolutely stable. A more complicated (and possibly deeper dynamically) idea is that of "echo" quarks. These result when the unbroken color SU(3) arises from the breakdown of a larger SU(3) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} SU(3) gauge symmetry. The dynamical motivations for this speculation and the distinctive phenomena that follow from it are analyzed. We find that there is no evidence against echo quarks of quite low mass (\ensuremath{\gtrsim} 2 GeV), which might be produced at present-day accelerators.

Abstract:I discuss some central issues in particle physics which are potentially relevant to cosmology. I first briefly review the present (glorious) experimental status of the Standard Model, emphasizing that it provides a firm foundation both for early Universe cosmology and for further exploration toward the basic laws of Nature. I then provide a critique, arguing that while there are no clear discrepancies, there are several major, specific deficiencies of the Standard Model which clearly point up its provisional character. I elaborate on the story theorists have made up to address one of these problems, the problem of scattered multiplets, and show how upon following it out one finds, within existing experiments, encouragement -- bordering on evidence -- for certain ambitious ideas regarding unification and supersymmetry. I briefly describe and contrast two paradigms of supersymmetry breaking, which have markedly different experimental and cosmological consequences. I call attention to specific connections with cosmology where appropriate throughout; and near the end I make some more global remarks. Finally I venture a speculation suggesting, in a fairly concrete way, the possibility that the laws of physics cannot, in principle, be disentangled from cosmology.

In collisions between high-energy heavy nuclei, temperatures of 1012 K or more are achieved, roughly ten thousand times that in the solar core. Theorists predict that under these conditions there is a drastic change in the structure of nuclear matter. Abstract:Constituting the largest subset of multiquark states so far observed by experiment, tetraquark mesons carrying overall quark flavour quantum numbers identical to those of the (conventional) quark-antiquark mesons necessitate their particularly deliberate phenomenological analyses. A collection of (more or less recent) insights specific to the latter subclass of exotic hadrons bears the promise to enable even significant improvement in the understanding of these hadrons by theoretical approaches such as, among others, the framework of QCD sum rules.

Abstract:Sixty years ago Gell-Mann introduced, with a striking sense of caution, a new fundamental layer in the structure of matter. He christened the associated particles 'quarks', a name borrowed from the psychedelic flood of words of James Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake. Independently and simultaneously, Zweig arrived at similar ideas. We outline the circumstances that led to the introduction of quarks.

Abstract:The Born-Oppenheimer potentials for QCD with light quarks include adjoint-hadron potentials that are repulsive at short distances and heavy-hadron-pair potentials that approach thresholds at large distances. The adjoint-hadron potentials must connect smoothly to the heavy-hadron-pair potentials at intermediate distances. We identify exotic hidden-heavy hadrons as bound states and resonances in adjoint-hadron potentials that cross a heavy-hadron-pair threshold and then approach it from below. This explains why many exotic hidden-charm and hidden-bottom hadrons have energies near heavy-hadron-pair thresholds. The remarkable properties of some exotic hidden-heavy mesons can be explained by fine tunings of adjoint-meson energies in QCD.

Abstract:In quantum theory, particles in three spatial dimensions come in two different types: bosons or fermions, which exhibit sharply contrasting behaviours due to their different exchange statistics. Could more general forms of probabilistic theories admit more exotic types of particles? Here, we propose a thought experiment to identify more exotic particles in general post-quantum theories. We consider how in quantum theory the phase introduced by swapping indistinguishable particles can be measured. We generalise this to post-quantum scenarios whilst imposing indistinguishability and locality principles. We show that our ability to witness exotic particle exchange statistics depends on which symmetries are admitted within a theory. These exotic particles can manifest unusual behaviour, such as non-abelianicity even in topologically simple three-dimensional space.

Abstract:It is shown that the exotic non-qqq hadrons of pentaquark [Formula: see text] states can be clearly distinguished from the conventional qqq-baryon resonances or their hybrids if the flavor of [Formula: see text] is different from any of the other four quarks. We suggest the physical process [Formula: see text], which can be investigated at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), as an ideal process to search for the existence or non-existence of the exotic hadron of minimal pentaquark state [Formula: see text].
