Theorists predict that under these conditions there is a drastic change in the structure of nuclear matter. The usual description in terms of baryons (such as protons and neutrons) and mesons (such as pions) must be abandoned in favour of the truly fundamental particles, quarks and gluons. Experiments have now provided the first substantial evidence that such a change occurs.

Abstract:Since we entered the 21st century,our understanding of the state of matter at the most fundamental level has been significantly deepened,mainly due to the successful running of the relativistic heavy-ion collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the U.S.and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.In particular,a new state of matter,the so-called quark-gluon plasma,has been extensively investigated,and many new and important achievements have been made.In this article we shall discuss the following points:1) the strong interaction and phase structure of quantum chromodynamics,2) the various properties of the quark-gluon plasma,and 3) the experimental signals of the quark-gluon plasma in high energy nuclear collisions.

Abstract:The quark-gluon plasma produced by collisions between ultra-relativistic heavy nuclei is well described in the language of hydrodynamics. Non-central collisions are characterized by very large angular momentum, which in a fluid system manifests as flow vorticity. This rotational structure can lead to a spin polarization of the hadrons that eventually emerge from the plasma, providing experimental access to flow substructure at unprecedented detail. Recently, first observations of $\Lambda$ hyperon polarization along the direction of collisional angular momentum have been reported. These measurements are in broad agreement with hydrodynamic and transport-based calculations and reveal that the QGP is the most vortical fluid ever observed. However, there remain important tensions between theory and observation which might be fundamental in nature. In the relatively mature field of heavy ion physics, the discovery of global hyperon polarization and three-dimensional simulations of the collision have opened an entirely new direction of research. We discuss the current status of this rapidly developing area and directions for future research.

Abstract:Important experimental results from CERN heavy ion collisions and their physical interpretation are reviewed.A hot and dense system is formed in the early stages of the collisions,and the energy density reaches the threshold to create quark-gluon plasma(QGP).The experimental phenomena like low-mass dilepton enhancement,J/Ψ suppression and strangeness enhancement can be explained through the formation of QGP.However,the current data are still not enough to prove the existence of QGP.

Abstract:Heavy ion collisions quickly form a droplet of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with a remarkably small viscosity. We give an accessible introduction to how to study this smallest and hottest droplet of liquid made on earth and why it is so interesting. The physics of heavy ions ranges from highly energetic quarks and gluons described by perturbative QCD to a bath of strongly interacting gluons at lower energy scales. These gluons quickly thermalize and form QGP, while the energetic partons traverse this plasma and end in a shower of particles called jets. Analyzing the final particles in a variety of different ways allows us to study the properties of QGP and the complex dynamics of multi-scale processes in QCD which govern its formation and evolution, providing what is perhaps the simplest form of complex quantum matter that we know of. Much remains to be understood, and throughout the review big open questions will be encountered.

Abstract:When the matter is heated up to about two trillion degrees Kelvin, quarks and gluons, that are ordinarily confined inside nucleons and other hadrons, will be deconfined and form a novel state of matter, called quark-gluon plasma. It is believed that shortly after the Big Bang, the early universe was filled with hot and dense quark-gluon plasma. The primary goal of high-energy heavy-ion collisions, such as those performed at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is to create quark-gluon plasma in the laboratory, to study its novel properties and to explore the phase structure of strong-interaction matter under extreme conditions of temperatures and densities, etc. Relativistic heavy-ion collisions are many-body dynamical processes that involve the evolutions and interactions of particles and matter at various scales. Due to the color confinement property of quantum chromodynamics and the fundamental quantum field theory of strong interactions, quarks and gluons cannot be directly detected in the laboratory. One of the most important tasks of relativistic heavy-ion collisions is to use the distributions and correlations of the final observed hadrons and other particles, combined with the initial state information of the collisions, to search for various signatures of quark-gluon plasma, to study its macroscopic properties and microscopic structures, and to probe the evolution dynamics of the entire heavy-ion collisions. Jet quenching and collective flow are two smoking-gun signatures for the formation of quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and they provide very important probes for studying the equation of state, transport properties and evolution dynamics of quark-gluon plasma. A wealth of evidence has shown that the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC is the hottest, most perfect and extremely opaque fluid ever observed in the laboratory. The dynamical evolution of quark-gluon plasma and the strong collective flows observed in the experiments can be successfully explained by relativistic viscous hydrodynamics, which demonstrates that the quark-gluon plasma is a strongly coupled and nearly perfect liquid, with extremely small shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. Quark-gluon plasma also shows very strong opaqueness to high-energy partonic jets as characterized by significant amount of parton energy loss and strong modification of jet structures, which can trigger supersonic shock waves on the femtometer scale in quark-gluon plasma. In this paper, I will briefly review some recent progress on our understanding of the collective properties and hard probes of quark-gluon plasma in high-energy nuclear collisions, such as initial state fluctuations, anisotropic collective flows, flow fluctuations and correlations, parton energy loss and jet quenching, nuclear modification of full jet and jet structures, jet-induced excitation and medium response, heavy quark dynamics in quark-gluon plasma and hadronization, the production and nuclear modification of heavy flavor hadrons, the collectivity and jet quenching in small systems, etc.

Abstract:We describe in the context of the particle physics (PP) standard model (SM) `PP-SM' the understanding of the primordial properties and composition of the Universe in the temperature range $130\GeV>T>20\keV$. The Universe evolution is described using FLRW cosmology. We present a global view on particle content across time and describe the different evolution eras using deceleration parameter $q$. We follow the arrow of time in the expanding and cooling Universe: After the PP-SM heavies $(t, h, W, Z)$ diminish in abundance below $T\simeq 50\GeV$, the PP-SM plasma in the Universe is governed by the strongly interacting Quark-Gluon content. Once the temperature drops below $T\simeq 150\MeV$, quarks and gluons hadronize into strongly interacting matter particles. Rapid disappearance of baryonic antimatter completes at $T_\mathrm{B}=38.2\MeV$. We study the ensuing disappearance of strangeness and mesons in general. We show that the different eras defined by particle populations are barely separated from each other with abundance of muons fading out just prior to $T=\mathcal{O}(2.5)\MeV$, the era of emergence of the free-streaming neutrinos. We discuss the two relevant fundamental constants controlling the decoupling of neutrinos. We subsequently follow the primordial Universe as it passes through the hot dense electron-positron plasma epoch. The high density of positron antimatter disappears near $T=20.3\keV$: Nuclear reactions occur in the presence of a highly mobile and relatively strongly interacting electron-positron plasma phase. We apply plasma theory methods to describe the strong screening effects between heavy dust particle (nucleons). We analyze the paramagnetic characteristics of the electron-positron plasma when exposed to an external primordial magnetic field.

Abstract:We review the physics of nuclear matter at high energy density and the experimental search for the quark-gluon plasma at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The data obtained in the first three years of the RHIC physics program provide several lines of evidence that a novel state of matter has been created in the most violent, head-on collisions of Au nuclei at root s- = 200 GeV Jet quenching and global measurements show that the initial energy density of the strongly interacting medium generated in the collision is about two orders of magnitude larger than that of cold nuclear matter, well above the critical density for the deconfinement phase transition predicted by lattice QCD. The observed collective flow patterns imply that the system thermalizes early in its evolution, with the dynamics of its expansion consistent with ideal hydrodynamic flow based on a quark-gluon plasma equation of state. Abstract:A new channel of direct photon production from a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is explored. This process appears at next-to-leading order in the presence of a charge asymmetry in the heated matter and may be effectively described as the bremsstrahlung of a real photon from a thermal gluon. The photon production from this new mechanism is calculated in the effective theory of QCD at high temperature. The results show that the photon production rate may not be as high as that of the annihilation and Compton scattering processes at low baryon density, but could become important in baryon-rich matter.

Abstract:We study particle production and its density evolution and equilibration in hot dense medium. One type of hot dense medium, which we study, is hadronic gas produced at quark gluon plasma hadronization in heavy ions collisions in SPS, RHIC and LHC experiments. We study hadron production at non-equilibrium quark gluon plasma hadronization and their evolution in thermal hadronic gas phase. We use non-equilibrium hadronization as the initial condition in the study of hadronic kinetic phase. During this time period some hadronic resonances can be produced in lighter hadrons fusion. Production of resonances is dominant over decay if there is non-equilibrium excess of decay products. Within this model we explain apparently contradictory experimental results reported in RHIC experiments: Sigma(1385) yield is enhanced while Lambda(1520) yield is suppressed compared to the statistical hadronization model expectation obtained without kinetic phase. We also predict Delta(1232) enhancement. The second type of plasma medium we consider is the relativistic electron positron photon plasma drop. This plasma is expected to be produced in decay of supercritical field created in ultrashort laser pulse. We study at what conditions this plasma drop is opaque for photons and therefore may reach thermal and chemical equilibrium. Further we consider muon and pion production in this plasma also as a diagnostic tool. Finally all these theoretical developments can be applied to begin a study of particles evolution in early universe in temperatures domain from QGP hadronization (160 MeV) to nucleosynthesis (0.1 MeV). The first results on pion equilibration are presented here.

Abstract:I review the three broad areas where major progress has been reported: The phase structure of strongly interacting matter, the properties of matter at the instant when it freezes out into individual hadrons in the final stage of the expansion of the hot fireball, and the status of the main signatures of the formation of a quark-gluon plasma. In the final section I present some thoughts about what should be done next, both in the experiemntal and the theoretical arena.

Abstract:Abundances and $m_\bot$-spectra of strange and other hadronic particles emanating from central 158-200 A GeV reactions between nuclei are found to originate from a thermally equilibrated, deconfined source in chemical non-equilibrium. Physical freeze-out parameters and physical conditions (pressure, specific energy, entropy, and strangeness) are evaluated. Five properties of the source we obtain are as expected for direct hadron emission (hadronization) from a deconfined quark-gluon plasma phase.

Abstract:We summarize recent developments in our understanding of low-mass quark-antiquark excitations in hadronic matter under various different conditions. This includes the thermodynamics of the chiral condensate, pions as Goldstone bosons in normal nuclear matter, and excursions into extreme territory of the QCD phase diagram: lepton pair production from a fireball expanding through the transition boundary between the quark-gluon and hadron pha ses of QCD.

Abstract:The creation of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is expected in heavy-ion collisions. It came as a surprise that proton-proton collisions at ultrarelativistic energies show as well a "QGP-like" behavior and signs of the creation of a fluid, although the corresponding system size is not more than a few cubic femtometers. Even more surprisingly, also heavy-flavor particles seem to be part of the fluid or at least interact with it. In this paper, we will investigate in a quantitative way this "collective behavior" of heavy flavor, by employing the newly developed EPOS4HQ approach, which has proven to be compatible with basic experimental data of light-flavor hadrons. We will investigate all observables, which may manifest collectivity, as particle spectra, elliptic flow, baryon-to-meson ratios, and two-particle correlations, and compare the results with experimental data.
