Abstract:The motion of systems with linear restoring forces and recurring nonlinear perturbations is of central importance in physics. When a system's natural oscillation frequencies and the frequency of the nonlinear restoring forces satisfy certain algebraic relations, the dynamics become resonant. In accelerator physics, an understanding of resonances and nonlinear dynamics is crucial for avoiding the loss of beam particles. Here we confirm the theoretical prediction of the dynamics for a single two-dimensional coupled resonance by observing so-called fixed lines. Specifically, we use the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron to measure the position of a particle beam at discrete locations around the accelerator. These measurements allow us to construct the Poincaré surface of section, which captures the main features of the dynamics in a periodic system. In our setting, any resonant particle passing through the Poincaré surface of section lies on a curve embedded in a four-dimensional phase space, the fixed line. These findings are relevant for mitigating beam degradation and thus for achieving high-intensity and high-brightness beams, as required for both current and future accelerator projects.

Abstract:By using multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we present a new regime of stable proton beam acceleration which takes place when a two-ion-species shaped foil is illuminated by a circularly polarized laser pulse. In the simulations, the lighter protons are nearly instantaneously separated from the heavier carbon ions due to the charge-to-mass ratio difference. The heavy ion layer expands in space and acts to buffer the proton layer from the Rayleigh-Taylor-like (RT) instability that would have otherwise degraded the proton beam acceleration. A simple three-interface model is formulated to explain qualitatively the stable acceleration of the light ions. In the absence of the RT instability, the high quality monoenergetic proton bunch persists even after the laser-foil interaction ends.

Abstract:Two-stream instabilities in intense charged particle beams, described self-consistently by the nonlinear Vlasov-Maxwell equations, are studied using a 3D multispecies perturbative particle simulation method. The recently developed Beam Equilibrium, Stability and Transport code is used to simulate the linear and nonlinear properties of the electron-proton (e-p) two-stream instability observed in the Proton Storage Ring (PSR) experiment for a long, coasting beam. Simulations in a parameter regime characteristic of the PSR experiment show that the e-p instability has a dipole-mode structure, and that the growth rate is an increasing function of beam intensity, but a decreasing function of the longitudinal momentum spread. It is also shown that the instability threshold decreases with increasing fractional charge neutralization and increases with increasing axial momentum spread of the beam particles. In the nonlinear phase, the simulations show that the proton density perturbation first saturates at a relatively low level and subsequently grows to a higher level. Finally, the nonlinear space-charge-induced transverse tune spread, which introduces a major growth-rate reduction effect on the e-p instability, is studied for self-consistent equilibrium populations of protons and electrons.
Stable proton beam acceleration from a two-specie ultrathin foil target

Abstract:By using multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we investigate the stabilization of proton beam acceleration in a two-specie ultra-thin foil. In this two-specie regime, the lighter protons are initially separated from the heavier carbon ions due to their higher charge-to-mass ratio Z/m. The laser pulse is well-defined so that it doesn't penetrate the carbon ion layer. The Rayleigh-Taylor-like (RT) instability seeded at the very early stage then only degrades the acceleration of the carbon ions which act as a "cushion" for the lighter protons. Due to the absence of proton-RT instability, the produced high quality mono-energetic proton beams can be well collimated even after the laser-foil interaction concludes.

Abstract:We report stable laser-driven proton beam acceleration from ultrathin foils consisting of two ion species: heavier carbon ions and lighter protons. Multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show that the radiation pressure leads to very fast and complete spatial separation of the species. The laser pulse does not penetrate the carbon ion layer, avoiding the proton Rayleigh-Taylor-like (RT) instability. Ultimately, the carbon ions are heated and spread extensively in space. In contrast, protons always ride on the front of the carbon ion cloud, forming a compact high quality bunch. We introduce a simple three-interface model to interpret the instability suppression in the proton layer. The model is backed by simulations of various compound foils such as carbon-deuterium (C-D) and carbon-tritium (C-T) foils. The effects of the carbon ions' charge state on proton acceleration are also investigated. It is shown that with the decrease of the carbon ion charge state, both the RT-like instability and the Coulomb explosion degrade the energy spectrum of the protons. Finally, full 3D simulations are performed to demonstrate the robustness of the stable two-ion-species regime.

Abstract:A two-stage proton acceleration scheme using present-day intense lasers and a unique target design is proposed. The target system consists of a hollow cylinder, inside which is a hollow cone, which is followed by the main target with a flat front and dish-like flared rear surface. At the center of the latter is a tapered proton layer, which is surrounded by outer proton layers at an angle to it. In the first acceleration stage, protons in both layers are accelerated by target normal sheath acceleration. The center-layer protons are accelerated forward along the axis and the side protons are accelerated and focused towards them. As a result, the side-layer protons radially compress as well as axially further accelerate the front part of the accelerating center-layer protons in the second stage, which are also radially confined and guided by the field of the fast electrons surrounding them. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation shows that a 79fs 8.5x10(20) W/cm(2) laser pulse can produce a proton bunch with similar to 267MeV maximum energy and similar to 9.5% energy spread, which may find many applications, including cancer therapy.

Abstract:Collective processes in intense charged particle beams described self-consistently by the Vlasov-Maxwell equations are studied using a 3D multispecies nonlinear perturbative particle simulation method. Focusing and Self-Modified Transport of High Intensity Proton Beams

Abstract:Summary form only given. Proton beams driven from short pulse lasers can deposit their energy in material with exceptionally high intensity and drive rapidly evolving plasma conditions and dynamic currents which lead to previously-unseen proton stopping and transport behavior. These effects, such as extended range and narrowing of the heated plasma volume, become more prominent as the beam energy and pulse length increase. To study this behavior we conducted experiments using kiloJoule short pulse lasers at the OMEGA EP facility. We used a 1250 J, 10 ps pulse to irradiate spherically curved diamond (C) targets with three target mounting configurations. The spectrum of protons from the target was measured from the source target as well as after passing through two transport layers and a Cu tracer layer. Cu K-shell x-ray fluorescence, caused by collisions of the beam protons and electrons with Cu atoms, was imaged with the Spherical Crystal Imager. The Cu K-α emission was focused and brighter by a factor of 8 with targets with conical structures compared to stand-alone hemispheres. The enhanced focusing and brightness is due to the sheath field generated inside the conical structure produced by fast electrons escaping the target. These focusing fields were detected using high spatial- and temporal-resolution proton radiographs. The beam density upon entry into the foils is estimated to be 1018 cm-3 for the structured target. The proton spectra through the foils were quintessentially different for the structured (high intensity beam) vs. stalk-mounted (diverging beam) targets. We have developed the capability to model beam/solid interactions self-consistently by modification of the particle-in-cell code LSP to accurately predict collisional stopping of protons over a wide range of warm dense and hot dense states. The findings include rich new physical effects that become important in proton transport for beams corresponding to the experim- nt and hypothetical higher intensity beams.

Abstract:To increase the fluence and maximum energy of laser-driven proton beams in view of potential applications such as isochoric heating of dense material or isotope production, it has been proposed to attach a helical coil normally to the rear side of the irradiated target. By driving the target discharge current pulse through the coil, this scheme allows a fraction of the proton beam to be selected in energy and to be focused and further accelerated. The previously published results are extended to higher laser pulse energies and longer coils. This leads to an increased number of guided protons and the generation of several proton bunches. Large scale particle-in-cell simulations with realistic boundary conditions reproduce well the experimental results. A detailed analysis of the numerical simulations and an analytical model demonstrate that the current propagation along a helical wire differs from the one of a linear or folded wire. In a helical wire, the current pulse is subject to velocity dispersion, which results in progressive modification of its spatial profile, and so in proton bunch trapping and focusing.

Abstract:Vertical fixed-field accelerators (vFFAs) feature a magnetic field that increases exponentially in the vertical direction, resulting in vertically stacked nonplanar orbits. Their magnetic field is highly nonlinear, and their solenoid and quadrupolar components induce strongly coupled optics. The detailed study of their beam dynamics must account for the transverse motion linear and nonlinear coupling. Specifically, the study of linear beam dynamics requires adequate coupling parametrizations, and the study of nonlinear beam dynamics, including the characterization of the dynamic aperture (DA), must be performed in the full 4D phase space. The zgoubi ray-tracing code is ideally suited to study the vFFA transverse dynamics, as it can perform step-by-step particle tracking in vFFA complex geometry and magnetic fields. This paper provides an in-depth study of the vFFA prototype ring designed under the ISIS-II proton driver prototype project to accelerate proton beams from 3 to 12 MeV. The magnets of this vFFA ring exhibit slow magnetic field falloffs, resulting in a significant influence of the neighboring cells on the optical lattice parameters. The determination of stable orbits and tunes requires superimposing 3D magnetic field maps in zgoubi to account for the neighboring cell residual fields. The study of nonlinear beam dynamics revealed the appearance of fourth-order stability islands. A complete characterization of the DA in the 4D phase space was conducted to give a measure of the stability domain and characterize the performance and limitations of this lattice. Abstract:In recent years, the interest in high intensity proton beams in excess of several milli-amperes has risen. Potential applications are in neutrino physics, materials and energy research, and isotope production. Continuous wave proton beams of five to ten milli-amperes are now in reach due to advances in accelerator technology and through improved understanding of the beam dynamics. As an example application, we present the proposed IsoDAR experiment, a search for so-called sterile neutrinos and non-standard interaction using the KamLAND detector located in Japan. We present updated sensitivities for this experiment and describe in detail the design of the high intensity proton driver that uses several novel ideas. These are: accelerating H 2 + instead of protons, directly injecting beam into the cyclotron via a radio frequency quadrupole, and carefully matching the beam to achieve so-called vortex motion. The preliminary design holds up well in PIC simulation studies and the injector system is now being constructed, to be commissioned with a 1MeV/amu test cyclotron.

Abstract:The theoretical status of the `proton spin' effect is reviewed. The conventional QCD parton model analysis of polarised DIS is compared with a complementary approach, the composite operator propagator-vertex (CPV) method, each of which provides its own insight into the origin of the observed suppression in the first moment of $g_1^p$. The current status of both experiment and non-perturbative calculations is summarised. The future role of semi-inclusive DIS experiments, in both the current and target fragmentation regions, is described.

Abstract:High intensity laser driven proton beams are at present receiving much attention. The reasons for this are many but high on the list is the potential to produce compact accelerators. However two of the limitations of this technology is that unlike conventional nuclear RF accelerators lasers produce diverging beams with an exponential energy distribution. A number of different approaches have been attempted to monochromise these beams but it has become obvious that magnetic spectrometer technology developed over many years by nuclear physicists to transport and focus proton beams could play an important role for this purpose. This paper deals with the design and characterisation of a magnetic quadrupole system which will attempt to focus and transport laser-accelerated proton beams.

Dominance of Particle Resonances over Parametric Instabilities in High-Intensity Linear Accelerators

Abstract:For high-intensity linear accelerators, space-charge halo mechanisms are largely classified into two families: particle resonances and parametric instabilities. The dominance between the fourth-order particle resonance and the envelope instability has been argued and studied. Our studies and previous literatures indicate the dominance of particle resonances over parametric instabilities in high-intensity linear accelerators. Any counter evidence has not been found yet. Also all the studies indicate that parametric instabilities are unlikely to be observed in actual linear accelerators unless waterbag or KV beams are generated. We propose a way to overcome the previous design rule to avoid the zero-current phase advance sigma_o > 90° for the high-intensity linac. The interplay is presented of the envelope instability and the fourth-order parametric instability.

Abstract:The acceleration of charged particles, producing collimated monoenergetic beams, over short distances holds the promise to offer new tools in medicine and diagnostics. Here, we consider a possible mechanism for accelerating protons to high energies by using a phase modulated circularly polarized electromagnetic wave propagating along a constant magnetic field. It is observed that a plane wave with dimensionless amplitude of 0.1 is capable to accelerate a 1 keV proton to 386 MeV under optimum conditions. Finally, we discuss possible limitations of the acceleration scheme.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of recent analytical and numerical investigations of collective processes in intense ion beams at the Plasma Physics Laboratory based on the nonlinear Vlasov–Maxwell equations. The topics covered include: (a) nonlinear stability theorem for quiescent beam propagation at high space-charge intensities; (b) development and application of Hamiltonian averaging techniques for intense beam propagation through alternating-gradient field configurations; (c) kinetic studies of the electron–ion two-stream instability which occurs when an (unwanted) component of electrons is present in the beam transport line; (d) application of the newly developed three-dimensional, multispecies, nonlinear perturbative particle simulation scheme, called the Beam Equilibrium, Stability and Transport (BEST) code, to investigate the linear and nonlinear dynamics of intense beam propagation, including the electron–ion two-stream instability; and (e) investigations of the role of collective mode excitations in the expulsion of particles from the beam core and the production of halo particles. Finally, the linear growth properties of instabilities driven by pressure anisotropy are investigated within the framework of a macroscopic warm-fluid model.
A Platform for Ultra-fast Proton Probing of Matter in Extreme Conditions

Abstract:Recent development of Ultra short and Intense laser system paved the way for the generation of short and brilliant proton sources that can be used to study plasmas at extreme conditions in the context of High Energy Density physics. Energy selection, focusing and transport of such sources is still a challenge that is not completely solved. here we present a novel and simple design for a isochrone magnetic selector capable of angular and energy selection of proton sources by drastically reducing the temporal spread if compared with the state of the art. The isochrone selector is demanded for studying proton stopping power in Warm Dense Matter close to the Bragg peak (proton energy below 1 MeV) where the reduced investigated masses imply a short plasma stagnation time ($<$ 100 ps). The proposed selector can also be used at higher proton energy by pushing the final time spread at the level of few ps with important implications for the study of coherent energy deposition in biology and medical physics. Analytical estimations and Monte Carlo simulations are presented to validate the proposed configurations.

Abstract:Beams with cross-plane coupling or extreme asymmetries between the two transverse phase spaces are often encountered in particle accelerators. Flat beams with large transverse-emittance ratios are critical for future linear colliders. Similarly, magnetized beams with significant cross-plane coupling are expected to enhance the performance of electron cooling in hadron beams. Preparing these beams requires precise control and characterization of the four-dimensional transverse phase space. In this study, we employ generative phase space reconstruction (GPSR) techniques to rapidly characterize magnetized and flat-beam phase-space distributions using a conventional quadrupole-scan method. The reconstruction technique is experimentally demonstrated on an electron beam produced at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator and successfully benchmarked against conventional diagnostics techniques. Specifically, we show that predicted beam parameters from the reconstructed phase-space distributions (e.g. as magnetization and flat beam emittances) are in excellent agreement with those measured from the conventional diagnostic methods.
