Abstract:Recent advances in lattice field theory, in computer technology and in chiral perturbation theory have enabled lattice QCD to emerge as a powerful quantitative tool in understanding hadron structure. I describe recent progress in the computation of the nucleon form factors and moments of parton distribution functions, before proceeding to describe lattice studies of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, I show how lattice studies of GPDs contribute to building a three-dimensional picture of the proton. I conclude by describing the prospects for studying the structure of resonances from lattice QCD.

Gluonic Transversity from Lattice QCD

Abstract:We present an exploratory study of the gluonic structure of the $\phi$ meson using lattice QCD (LQCD). This includes the first investigation of gluonic transversity via the leading moment of the twist-two double-helicity-flip gluonic structure function $\Delta(x,Q^2)$. This structure function only exists for targets of spin $J\ge1$ and does not mix with quark distributions at leading twist, thereby providing a particularly clean probe of gluonic degrees of freedom. We also explore the gluonic analogue of the Soffer bound which relates the helicity flip and non-flip gluonic distributions, finding it to be saturated at the level of 80%. This work sets the stage for more complex LQCD studies of gluonic structure in the nucleon and in light nuclei where $\Delta(x,Q^2)$ is an 'exotic glue' observable probing gluons in a nucleus not associated with individual nucleons.

Abstract:Despite quantum chromodynamics (QCD) being established as the theory of the strong interaction and its many successes since then, significant challenges in our understanding of hadron physics remain. The lack of a full understanding for how the observed hadrons arise from the quark and gluon degrees of freedom which define QCD represents a real challenge in connecting the theory to experiment. In particular, the rich spectrum of hadrons marks a significant gap in our understanding, as no model can currently explain all observed hadrons and QCD itself has only been used to study a small subset of the full spectrum. The significant hurdle for using QCD directly is due to the non-perturbative nature of the theory at low energies, requiring methods like lattice QCD. Here, the spectrum of hadrons and how it relates to few-body dynamics is reviewed, with a focus on state-of-the-art methods for their study through lattice QCD.

Hadron Spectroscopy with lattice QCD: challenges and opportunities

Abstract:Ongoing challenges in computing the spectrum of hadronic resonances and shallow bound-states from lattice QCD are reviewed. Since such states are identified as poles in the scattering matrix, nearby non-analyticities must be treated to analytically continue to complex center-of-mass energies. Significant lattice spacing effects have also been observed in some channels, necessitating a continuum limit. Recent achievements are also highlighted, including lattice investigations of states in the charm region, baryon-baryon scattering, and the first coupled channel meson-baryon amplitude in the $\Lambda(1405)$ channel.

Glue in hadrons at medium resolution and the QCD instanton vacuum

Abstract:We discuss a general framework for the evaluation of the gluonic form factors in light hadrons at low momentum transfer, in the QCD instanton vacuum. At medium resolution of the order of the inverse mean instanton size, the glue is mostly localized in single or pair of pseudoparticles, and globally constrained by the fluctuations of their topological charges. These pseudoparticles trap light quarks, giving rise to emerging multiflavor 't Hooft interactions. We explicitly evaluate the gluonic scalar, pseudoscalar, energy-momentum tensor (EMT), and the leading C-odd and C-even three gluons hadronic form factors, at next to leading order (NLO) in the instanton density, including molecular clusters of like and unlike instantons. We use the results for the EMT to address the contribution of the gluons in Ji$^\prime$s mass and spin sum rules, at low resolution. When evolved, our results for the mass and spin composition of the nucleon, are shown to be in good agreement with the recently reported lattice results at higher resolution.

Abstract:The vast bulk of visible mass emerges from nonperturbative dynamics within quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- the strong interaction sector of the Standard Model. The past decade has revealed the three pillars that support this emergent hadron mass (EHM); namely, a nonzero gluon mass-scale, a process-independent effective charge, and dressed-quarks with constituent-like masses. Theory is now working to expose their manifold and diverse expressions in hadron observables and highlighting the types of measurements that can be made in order to validate the paradigm. In sketching some of these developments, this discussion stresses the role of EHM in forming nucleon electroweak structure and the wave functions of excited baryons through the generation of dynamical diquark correlations; producing and constraining the dilation of the leading-twist pion distribution amplitude; shaping pion and nucleon parton distribution functions -- valence, glue and sea, including the antisymmetry of antimatter; and moulding pion and proton charge and mass distributions.

Abstract:The author reviews in a pedagogical fashion some of the recent developments in lattice quantum chromodynamics. This review emphasizes explicit examples and illustrations rather than general proofs and analyses. It begins with a discussion of the heavy-quark potential in continuum quantum chromodynamics. Asymptotic freedom and renormalization-group improved perturbation theory are discussed. A simple dielectric model of confinement is considered as an intuitive guide to the vacuum of non-Abelian gauge theories. Next, the Euclidean form of lattice gauge theory is introduced, and an assortment of calculational methods are reviewed. These include high-temperature expansions, duality, Monte Carlo computer simulations, and weak coupling expansions. A Λ- parameter calculation for asymptotically free-spin models is presented. The Hamiltonian formulation of lattice gauge theory is presented and is illustrated in the context of flux tube dynamics. Roughening transitions, Casimir forces, and the restoration of rotational symmetry are discussed. Mechanisms of confinement in lattice theories are illustrated in the two-dimensional electrodynamics of the planar model and the U(1) gauge theory in four dimensions. Generalized actions for SU(2) gauge theories and the relevance of monopoles and strings to crossover phenomena are considered. A brief discussion of the continuity of fields and topological charge in asymptotically free lattice models is presented. The final major topic of this review concerns lattice fermions. The species doubling problem and its relation to chiral symmetry are illustrated. Staggered Euclidean fermion methods are discussed in detail, with an emphasis on species counting, remnants of chiral symmetry, Block spin variables, and the axial anomaly. Numerical methods for including fermions in computer simulations are considered. Jacobi and Gauss-Siedel inversion methods to obtain the fermion propagator in a background gauge field are reviewed. Langevin, pseudofermion Monte Carlo methods, and random walk methods are discussed, as are proposals for including the fermion determinant in computer simulations. Finally, spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in lattice models is discussed. The review ends with brief remarks about present research directions.

Abstract:By trapping cold polarizable atoms in periodic potentials created by crossed laser beams, it is now possible to experimentally create "clean" lattice systems. Experimentalists have successfully engineered local and nearest-neighbor interactions that approximately recreate Hubbard-like models on table tops. I discuss the possibility of using this new technology in the context of lattice gauge theory and in particular, relativistic dispersion relations, flavor symmetry, functional derivatives and emerging local gauge symmetry.

Abstract:In this thesis, we perform the lattice QCD analysis via the energy-momentum component of gluons. By introducing the momentum cutoff to the link variable, we investigate which energy-momentum components of gluons induce each QCD phenomenon. We use the Landau gauge for the most part of the lattice QCD analysis. In lattice QCD, we analyze color confinement, spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, topological charge, and the related topics. We also discuss several comparisons with effective theories. As for color confinement, we calculate the quark-antiquark potential, the color flux tube, and meson masses. From quantitative analysis, we find that color confinement is induced by the low-momentum component below 1.5 GeV. As for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, we calculate the chiral condensate and the Dirac spectrum. Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is induced by the broad low-momentum component which ranges even above 1.5 GeV. The present result suggests that color confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking are induced by somehow different energy-momentum components of gluons. As for topological charge, we calculate the topological charge density and the Dirac zero mode. Topological charge is induced by the broad energy-momentum component, which is similar to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:Following our previous proposal, we construct a class of good "lattice cross sections" (LCSs), from which we can study the partonic structure of hadrons from ab initio lattice QCD calculations. These good LCSs, on the one hand, can be calculated directly in lattice QCD, and on the other hand, can be factorized into parton distribution functions (PDFs) with calculable coefficients, in the same way as QCD factorization for factorizable hadronic cross sections. PDFs could be extracted from QCD global analysis of the lattice QCD generated data of LCSs. We also show that the proposed functions for lattice QCD calculation of PDFs in the literature are special cases of these good LCSs.

Abstract:We summarize recent developments in our understanding of low-mass quark-antiquark excitations in hadronic matter under various different conditions. This includes the thermodynamics of the chiral condensate, pions as Goldstone bosons in normal nuclear matter, and excursions into extreme territory of the QCD phase diagram: lepton pair production from a fireball expanding through the transition boundary between the quark-gluon and hadron pha ses of QCD.

Abstract:Continuum and lattice analyses have revealed the existence of a mass-scale in the gluon two-point Schwinger function. It has long been conjectured that this expresses the action of a Schwinger mechanism for gauge boson mass generation in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). For such to be true, it is necessary and sufficient that a dynamically-generated, massless, colour-carrying, scalar gluon+gluon correlation emerges as a feature of the dressed three-gluon vertex. Working with results on elementary Schwinger functions obtained via the numerical simulation of lattice-regularised QCD, we establish with an extremely high level of confidence that just such a feature appears; hence, confirm the conjectured origin of the gluon mass scale. Abstract:We study operators to create hadronic states made of light quarks in quenched lattice gauge theory. We construct non-local gauge-invariant operators which provide information about the spatial extent of the ground state and excited states. The efficiency of the operators is shown by looking at the wave function of the first excited state, which has a node as a function of the spatial extent of the operator. This allows one to obtain an uncontaminated ground state for hadrons.

Abstract:Anchoring our understanding of low-energy nuclear and hadronic physics to the fundamental theory of strong interactions, QCD, remains and outstanding challenge for physicists. Lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory are the most powerful theoretical tools we have at our disposal to make this connection. These tools share a symbiotic relationship as chiral perturbation theory is used to understand the light quark mass dependence of observables, while lattice QCD is used to determine the values of the unknown operator coefficients appearing in the chiral Lagrangian. In this talk, I review our present understanding of select single baryon properties from lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory, highlighting some of the challenges and discussing some unresolved puzzles.

Abstract:The role of gluons in the structure of the nucleon and light nuclei is investigated using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations. The first moment of the unpolarized gluon distribution is studied in nuclei up to atomic number A=3 at quark masses corresponding to pion masses of mπ∼450 and 806 MeV. Nuclear modification of this quantity defines a gluonic analogue of the EMC effect and is constrained to be less than ∼10% in these nuclei. This is consistent with expectations from phenomenological quark distributions and the momentum sum rule. In the deuteron, the combination of gluon distributions corresponding to the b1 structure function is found to have a small first moment compared with the corresponding momentum fraction. The first moment of the gluon transversity structure function is also investigated in the spin-1 deuteron, where a nonzero signal is observed at mπ∼806 MeV. This is the first indication of gluon contributions to nuclear structure that can not be associated with an individual nucleon.
