Abstract:Lanthanum hydroxide nanowires were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method with lanthanum nitrate (La(NO3)(3)center dot nH(2)O) as precursors and KOH as mineralizer. The phase formation and morphology of the synthesized lanthanum hydroxide were investigated by XRD, SAED, and TEM. The formation mechanism of lanthanum hydroxide nanowires, as well as the effect of temperature on their morphologies were also discussed. The results indicate that lanthanum hydroxide grows along [100] axis because of great anisotropy. High temperature promotes crystallization of lanthanum hydroxide and longer nanowires are resulted.

Abstract:Lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)3) nanorods with 6–15 nm in width and 200–400 nm in length have been prepared by a simple hydrothermal process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the nanorods are of hexagonal structure, and furthermore, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) identifies that the lanthanum hydroxide nanorods are highly crystalline. Moreover, the mechanism for the hydrothermal synthesis of lanthanum hydroxide nanorods has been preliminarily presented.

Abstract:Monocrystalline LnPO(4) (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb) nanowires have been prepared in bulk quantities by a simple, facile, and clean solution-based hydrothermal method at 220-240 degreesC by finely tuning the acidity of the stock solutions. The length and width of the nanowires were in the range of 1-10 mum and 10-200 nm, respectively.

Abstract:A family of layered lanthanide (Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd) hydroxide nanowires (NWs) has been synthesized via a hydrothermal route. These NWs are ∼8 nm in diameter and a few micrometres in length. The obtained Eu- and Gd-based layered hydroxide NWs consist of layered structure with two interlayer spacings. The effects of hydrothermal temperature and time on the transition of the layered structure were investigated. Photoluminescence of the Eu-based layered hydroxide NWs was also studied. These layered lanthanide hydroxide NWs combine the advantages of lanthanide and layered hydroxides, which will expand the inorganic layered materials and can be expected to be used as building blocks for further fabrication of functional nanostructures.

Abstract:Single-crystalline tetragonal LnVO4 (Ln=La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy) nanorods were prepared via a simple hydrothermal method, in the absence of any surfactant or template using cheap and simple inorganic salts as raw materials. The products were characterized by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and PL. It has been shown that after the hydrothermal process, LaVO4 transformed its crystal structure from monoclinic to tetragonal phase, but LnVO4 (Ln=Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy) have not exhibited the structural change. This could be associated with the change of lanthanide ion radius. TEM and HRTEM results show that the nanorods are pure, structurally uniform, single crystalline, and most of them are free from dislocations. Further study reveals the nanorods grow along the [001] direction. A possible growth mechanism of lanthanide orthovanadate nanorods was also proposed. The advantages of our method for the nanorods synthesis lie in the high yield and the low temperature and mild reaction conditions, which permit large scale production at low cost.

Abstract:Using low-temperature hydrothermal methods, nanoscale lanthanide phenylphosphonates species with different morphologies, namely, nanoparticles and nanorods, have been systematically synthesized. The possible growth mechanism of these nanorods was discussed. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize these materials. The photoluminescent properties of Eu(O3PC6H5)(HO3PC6H5) and La0.91Eu0.09(O3PC6H5)(HO3PC6H5) nanorods were discussed.

Abstract:Systematic synthesis of scheelite-type double molybdate nano-/microcrystals NaLn (MoO4)(2) (Ln = La-Lu lanthanides and Y) was successfully carried out via hydrothermal reaction at 180 degrees C without using any organic additive, and the intrinsic effects of lanthanide contraction on phase preference and crystallite morphology were unambiguously observed. It was shown that the products of larger Ln(3+) (Ln = La-Dy) and smaller Ln(3+) (Ln = Ho-Lu and Y) elements crystallized as tetragonal NaLn (MoO4)(2) and new orthorhombic NaLnMo(2)O(8)center dot 2H(2)O structures, respectively, with the latter being able to dehydrate to tetragonal NaLn (MoO4)(2) upon calcination at similar to 300 degrees C. Y was found to be a demarcation point for the two structures, and phase preference was shown to be influenced by solution pH and MoO42-/Y3+ molar ratio. With Eu3+ as a downconversion (DC) luminescence probe, the effects of Ln type (Ln = La, Gd, Y and Lu) and crystal structure were manifested. Furthermore, the upconversion (UC) luminescence of Yb3+/Ho3+ and Yb3+/Er3+ pairs in NaLu(MoO4)(2) was studied for the first time, and strong red and green UC emissions were observed under the 978 nm laser excitation. Besides, the processes/mechanisms of UC were studied via varying the excitation power and were discussed with Yb3+-MoO42- dimer sensitizer. (c) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Single-crystal MnWO4 nanowires were successfully prepared for the first time via a simple hydrothermal method without any surfactants. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The effect of pH value, precursor, and reaction temperature on the formation of MnWO4 nanocrystals was investigated. The precursor was found to be vital to the formation of MnWO4 nanowires. It is rational to expect that one-dimensional nanostructures of other tungstates may also be synthesized by this simple method.

Abstract:Monazite type monocrystalline nanowires of mixed lanthanide orthophosphates LnTb(PO4)2 (Ln=Ce, Nd, Sm) were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal process under optimal heat-treatment temperature (240 °C) and the starting acidity of the stock solution (pH 0.8). The as-synthesized nanowires were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The length and width of the nanowires were in the range of 2–10 μm and 20–350 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Large-scale alpha-FeOOH nanowires with uniform diameter and high aspect ratios were synthesized via hydrothermal reaction at 100 degrees C. The obtained alpha-FeOOH nanowire was of diameter of 80 nm and length up to 1.2 mu m. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that the nanowires are of orthorhombic structure, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis further confirms the formation of orthorhombic phase alpha-FeOOH. High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) studies indicate the single-crystalline nature of alpha-FeOOH nanowires with an oriented growth along the [001] axis direction. Based on the results of contrastive experiments, the possible mechanism for hydrothermal synthesis of a-FeOOH nanowires was also discussed. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hexagonal LnPO4·nH2O (Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) and orthorhombic LnPO4·nH2O (Ln=Tb, Dy) one-dimensional nanomaterials were prepared through hydrothermal reaction under fine control of the acidity in the mother liquors and with a heating temperature in the range 140–200°C. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The length and width of the nanowires/nanorods were in the ranges 0.2–5μm and 10–300nm, respectively. The phasic and morphological changes of the products due to the acidity of the stock solution and the heating temperature used are also discussed.

Abstract:The hydrothermal synthesis process and luminescence properties of Ln3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles have been investigated. Nearly spherical Eu3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles can be observed. The luminescence concentration quenching of Eu3+ in the NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles was found to be similar to that in the NaY(WO4)2 crystals. The upconversion luminescence intensity of the Yb3+–Er3+ codoped NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles was found to be much stronger than that of the Er3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 nanoparticles.

Abstract:A template-free hydrothermal method to Ni(OH)2 single-crystal nanorods were successfully established based on the 2-D layered structures of Ni(OH)2. The obtained Ni(OH)2 nanorods were 40–90 nm in diameters and 1–3 μm in lengths. It is interesting that Ni(OH)2 nanorods would be converted into NiO nanorings when they were annealed at 500 °C for 6 h.

Abstract:Perovskite oxide La(0.825)Sro(0.175)MnO(3) (LSMO) nanowires are synthesized using the anodized alumina oxide template technique and the characterization of the microstructure, magnetic and photol uminescence properties is performed. The as-prepared LSMO nanowires 50 nm in diameter and tens of microns in length exhibit polycrystalline perovskite structure. The magnetic measurement reveals the competition between anti ferromagnetic ordering and spin glass state as ground state in the nanowires, which is different from the magnetic behaviours of bulk ceramic and single crystals. The photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy demonstrates strong and broadband emissions with two luminescent peaks at 400 and 420 nm, respectively, which are believed to originate from the self-trapped excitons, oxygen vacancies and surface states, respectively.
