Abstract:Monocrystalline LnPO(4) (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb) nanowires have been prepared in bulk quantities by a simple, facile, and clean solution-based hydrothermal method at 220-240 degreesC by finely tuning the acidity of the stock solutions. The length and width of the nanowires were in the range of 1-10 mum and 10-200 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Using low-temperature hydrothermal methods, nanoscale lanthanide phenylphosphonates species with different morphologies, namely, nanoparticles and nanorods, have been systematically synthesized. The possible growth mechanism of these nanorods was discussed. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize these materials. The photoluminescent properties of Eu(O3PC6H5)(HO3PC6H5) and La0.91Eu0.09(O3PC6H5)(HO3PC6H5) nanorods were discussed.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis of single-crystalline Ni2P nanowires via a solution-phase approach using nickel (II) acetylacetonate as a metal precursor and trioctylphosphine as a phosphorus source. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the crystalline structure, morphology and composition of the as-synthesized nanowires. The results show that the as-synthesized nanowires have a uniform width of ca. 6nm, and a length that can vary from tens of nanometers to several hundred nanometers. These nanowires possess a hexagonal crystalline phase, and predominantly grow along the c-axis. The formation of one-dimensional nanostructures has a close relationship with the concentration of metal precursor and surfactants, and the synthetic methodologies.

Abstract:A new synthetic approach using the Pluronic P123-assisted hydrothermal reaction of lanthanum phosphate and europium-doped lanthanum phosphate has been developed, which results in the formation of uniform spindle-shaped microarchitectures most probably by a self-assembly process. Our results reveal that the obtained spindle-shaped microarchitectures consist of several tens of aligned single-crystalline nanowires with smooth, well-defined facets and highly uniform morphologies. These well-defined spindle-shaped microarchitectures show greatly enhanced photoluminescence, in these compounds when compared to their counterparts of disordered arrangements. A possible formation mechanism for these spindle-shaped microarchitectures is presented and discussed.

Abstract:A facile, surfactant-assisted, hydrothermal approach has been developed to synthesize lanthanide phosphate single-crystalline nanowires/nanorods with smooth surface, uniform diameter, and good crystallinity. The surfactant Pluronic P123 was found to play a crucial role on the uniform morphology of lanthanide phosphate single-crystalline nanowires/nanorods. Photoluminescence spectra of the lanthanide phosphate single-crystalline nanowires/nanorods show that these nanowires/nanorods have strong photoluminescent emissions in the ultraviolet-visible and near-infrared regions. The present work is a preliminary and significant step toward the potential luminescent and catalytic applications of lanthanide compound based one-dimensional nanostructures.

Abstract:Uniform LnPO(4).x H(2)O (Ln=Y, La-Nd, Sm-Lu) nanocrystals that have controllable 0D (spherelike), 1D (rodlike), and 2D (polygonlike) structures have been systematically synthesized by means of a hydrothermal method by using a mixed solvent of water and ethanol. Transmission electron microscopy images and SEAD (selected area electron diffraction) patterns revealed that the products are highly crystalline and have structurally uniform shapes. IR, Raman, and electron energy loss spectroscopies gave spectra that indicated that an amount of oleic acid molecules were presented at the surface of individual nanocrystals. These nanocrystals have hydrophobic surfaces and could be easily dispersed in nonpolar solvents. Moreover, a creditable synthetic mechanism for nucleation, growth, and shape evolution has been proposed. Eu(3+) doped products were also prepared by using the same synthetic process. The Eu(3+) doped products exhibited an orange-red luminescence that is ascribed to an electron transition within the 4f shell. Analysis of the photoluminescent spectra revealed that the optical properties are strongly dependent on their morphologies.
A Simple Method to Synthesize Single-Crystalline Lanthanide Orthovanadate Nanorods

Abstract:Single-crystalline tetragonal LnVO4 (Ln=La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy) nanorods were prepared via a simple hydrothermal method, in the absence of any surfactant or template using cheap and simple inorganic salts as raw materials. The products were characterized by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and PL. It has been shown that after the hydrothermal process, LaVO4 transformed its crystal structure from monoclinic to tetragonal phase, but LnVO4 (Ln=Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy) have not exhibited the structural change. This could be associated with the change of lanthanide ion radius. TEM and HRTEM results show that the nanorods are pure, structurally uniform, single crystalline, and most of them are free from dislocations. Further study reveals the nanorods grow along the [001] direction. A possible growth mechanism of lanthanide orthovanadate nanorods was also proposed. The advantages of our method for the nanorods synthesis lie in the high yield and the low temperature and mild reaction conditions, which permit large scale production at low cost.

Abstract:Hexagonal LnPO4·nH2O (Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) and orthorhombic LnPO4·nH2O (Ln=Tb, Dy) one-dimensional nanomaterials were prepared through hydrothermal reaction under fine control of the acidity in the mother liquors and with a heating temperature in the range 140–200°C. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The length and width of the nanowires/nanorods were in the ranges 0.2–5μm and 10–300nm, respectively. The phasic and morphological changes of the products due to the acidity of the stock solution and the heating temperature used are also discussed.

Abstract:Lanthanum hydroxide nanowires were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method with lanthanum nitrate (La(NO3)(3)center dot nH(2)O) as precursors and KOH as mineralizer. The phase formation and morphology of the synthesized lanthanum hydroxide were investigated by XRD, SAED, and TEM. The formation mechanism of lanthanum hydroxide nanowires, as well as the effect of temperature on their morphologies were also discussed. The results indicate that lanthanum hydroxide grows along [100] axis because of great anisotropy. High temperature promotes crystallization of lanthanum hydroxide and longer nanowires are resulted.

Abstract:LnPO4·nH2O (Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd) (n=0–1) nanowires are synthesized without using any surfactants or templates at room temperature. The as-obtained nanowires are within 10–50nm in diameter and up to 10μm in length. The most important improvement is that the aspect ratios of LnPO4·nH2O nanowires can be effectively controlled by adjusting the reaction time and pH value of the reaction system. The as-synthesized nanowires are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It is interesting to find that both the inherent crystal structure of light lanthanide phosphate and the anisotropic growth affect the formation of these nanowires. Under the similar reaction conditions, the Eu3+-doped LaPO4 nanomaterials are also synthesized as a comparison. The photoluminescence (PL) instrument is used to investigate the optical properties of the doped nanomaterials.

Abstract:Lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)3) nanorods with 6–15 nm in width and 200–400 nm in length have been prepared by a simple hydrothermal process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the nanorods are of hexagonal structure, and furthermore, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) identifies that the lanthanum hydroxide nanorods are highly crystalline. Moreover, the mechanism for the hydrothermal synthesis of lanthanum hydroxide nanorods has been preliminarily presented.

Abstract:Monazite type monocrystalline nanowires of mixed lanthanide orthophosphates LnTb(PO4)2 (Ln=Ce, Nd, Sm) were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal process under optimal heat-treatment temperature (240 °C) and the starting acidity of the stock solution (pH 0.8). The as-synthesized nanowires were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The length and width of the nanowires were in the range of 2–10 μm and 20–350 nm, respectively.

Abstract:The fundamental understanding of the relationship between crystal structure and the dynamic processes of anisotropic growth on the nanoscale, and exploration of the key factors governing the evolution of physical properties in functional nanomaterials, have become two of the most urgent and challenging issues in the fabrication and exploitation of functional nanomaterials with designed properties and the development of nanoscale devices. Herein, we show how structural and kinetic factors govern the tendency for anisotropic growth of such materials under hydrothermal conditions, and how the crystal structure and morphology influence the optical properties of Ln3+-doped nanocrystals. The synthesis of phase-pure and single-crystalline monoclinic, hexagonal, and tetragonal one-dimensional LnPO4 nanostructures of different aspect ratios by means of kinetically controlled hydrothermal growth processes is demonstrated. It is shown that the tendency for anisotropic growth under hydrothermal conditions can be enhanced simply by modifying the chemical potentials of species in the reaction solution through the use of carefully selected chelating ligands. A systematic study of the photoluminescence of various Eu3+-doped lanthanide phosphates has revealed that the optical properties of these nanophosphors are strongly dependent on their crystal structures and morphologies.
Phase Selection Enabled Formation of Abrupt Axial Heterojunctions in Branched Oxide Nanowires.

Abstract:Rational synthesis of nanowires via the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism with compositional and structural controls is vitally important for fabricating functional nanodevices from bottom up. Here, we show that branched indium tin oxide nanowires can be in situ seeded in vapor transport growth using tailored Au-Cu alloys as catalyst. Furthermore, we demonstrate that VLS synthesis gives unprecedented freedom to navigate the ternary In-Sn-O phase diagram, and a rare and bulk-unstable cubic phase can be selectively stabilized in nanowires. The stabilized cubic fluorite phase possesses an unusual almost equimolar concentration of In and Sn, forming a defect-free epitaxial interface with the conventional bixbyite phase of tin-doped indium oxide that is the most employed transparent conducting oxide. This rational methodology of selecting phases and making abrupt axial heterojunctions in nanowires presents advantages over the conventional synthesis routes, promising novel composition-modulated nanomaterials.

Abstract:Single-crystal MnWO4 nanowires were successfully prepared for the first time via a simple hydrothermal method without any surfactants. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The effect of pH value, precursor, and reaction temperature on the formation of MnWO4 nanocrystals was investigated. The precursor was found to be vital to the formation of MnWO4 nanowires. It is rational to expect that one-dimensional nanostructures of other tungstates may also be synthesized by this simple method.

Abstract:CuIn(WO4)(2) porous nanospindles and nanorods were synthesized through a low-cost hydrothermal method without introducing any template or surfactants. An interesting formation mechanism, namely "oriented attachment", was observed for the growth of nanorods based on the experimental process and the anisotropic intrinsic crystalline structure of CuIn(WO4)(2), which is uncommon in such a system. The near-infrared luminescence of lanthanide ions (Er, Nd, Yb and Ho) doped CuIn(WO4)(2) nanostructures, especially in the 1300-1600 nm region, was discussed and of particular interest for telecommunications applications. X-Ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize these materials.

Abstract:This paper describes a general hydrothermal route for the synthesis of a series of rare‐earth orthophosphates, LnPO4·xH2O (Ln=La, Y, Ce, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Er, and Yb), with a mean diameter of ∼100 nm. The procedure involves the formation of homogeneous, transparent, metal–citrate–ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) gel precursors using both citric acid and EDTA as the complexing agents, followed by hydrothermal mineralization to yield the final LnPO4·xH2O nanocrystallites. Techniques of X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and high‐resolution transmission electron microscope have been used to characterize the as‐synthesized LnPO4·xH2O nanocrystals. Furthermore, photoluminescence (PL) characterization of the Eu3+‐doped LnPO4·xH2O nanocrystals was carried out. The results indicate that the PL property changes considerably with the ionic radii of the rare‐earth elements.
