Abstract:Nanostructured sub-stoichiometric transition metal oxides hold promising applications in many areas, while challenge still remains towards their precisely controlled synthesis, particularly for those ultrafine nanowires. In present work, a carbon nanotube (CNT) inner growth based on two-step synthetic approach was adopted to achieve one-dimensional sub-stoichiometric tungsten oxides. Ammonium tetrathiotungsten((NH4)(2)WS4)) were encapsulated into the inner cavity of carbon nanotubes, which were thermally decomposed into tungsten oxides inside the CNTs. Characterizations confirm that the CNT-filling products are ultrafine one-dimensional W3O8 nanowires, that appears 1.23-1.93 nm in width (corresponding to four-five arrays of tungsten atomic column) and up tens of microns in length (close to that of CNTs). The non-noticeable size-dependent lattice parameters of the W3O8 nanowires and the large nanowire-CNT separation indicate a rather weak interaction between the filled W3O8 nanowires and host CNTs, which provides the opportunity to separate and probe the intrinsic properties of these ultrafine 1D W3O8 nanowires. Nevertheless, the proposed synthetic method is extendable to achieve other 1D transition metal oxides.
Novel Route to WOxNanorods and WS2Nanotubes from WS2Inorganic Fullerenes

Abstract:WOx (2 < x < 3) and WS2 nanostructures have been widely praised due to applications as catalysts, solid lubricants, field emitters, and optical components. Many methods have been developed to fabricate these nanomaterials; however, most attention was focused on the same dimensional transformation from WOx nanoparticles or nanorods to WS2 nanoparticles or nanotubes. In a solid-vapor reaction, by simply controlling the quantity of water vapor and reaction temperature, we have realized the transformation from quasi-zero-dimensional WS2 nanoparticles to one-dimensional W18O49 nanorods, and subsequent sulfuration reactions have further converted these W18O49 nanorods into WS2 nanotubes. The reaction temperature, quantity of water vapor, and pretreatment of the WS2 nanoparticle precursors are important process parameters for long, thin, and homogeneous W18O49 nanorods growth. The morphologies, crystal structures, and circling transformation mechanisms of sulfide-oxide-sulfide are discussed, and the photoluminescence properties of the resulting nanorods are investigated using a Xe lamp under an excitation of 270 nm.

Abstract:Large-scale gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2, nanorods have been synthesized via the hydrothermal process assisted with CTAB at 200 degrees C for 20 h using MnSO4 and NaOH as source and subsequent calcination of gamma-MnOOH nanorods at 300 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. The characterization of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) indicate that the gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2 nanorods prepared are monoclinic and tetragonal single crystalline, respectively. Abstract:In this article, a two-dimensional (2D) nanoplate and a 3D hierarchical structure of BiOCl were synthesized through a simple sonochemical route. Compared with previous preparation methods, the 2D nanoplates can be prepared at a relatively short time (about 30 min) with low energy used. Additionally, these 2D nanoplates can easily assemble into a 3D hierarchical structure with the surfactant reagents. The obtained products were well crystallized and subsequently characterized by a range of methods, such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and Raman spectroscopy. A possible mechanical growth route was also proposed based on the experiments. The photocatalytic properties of the prepared samples were further investigated by photocatalytic decomposition of Methene Orange (MO) dye, which indicated that the 3D hierarchical structure can effectively improve photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:BiPO4 nanorods with controlled morphologies were fabricated using a hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the BiPO4 nanorods was investigated by their ability to degrade methylene blue (MB). The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). It was found that glycerol content, reaction time and temperature, and concentration of precursor influenced the morphology and structure of the product. The glycerol content and concentration of precursor mainly influence the morphology of the product. As the glycerol content increases, the aspect ratio first increases, and then decreases. The aspect ratio of the product increases and the size decreases as the concentration of precursor is lowered. When the reaction time is short, the crystallinity of the product is poor, and it forms a hexagonal phase. Hexagonal BiPO4, transforms into the monoclinic product when the reaction time is longer. The optimal temperature for crystal formation was found to be 160 degrees C. The results show that BiPO4 nanorods possess excellent photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet light. The photocatalytic activity of BiPO4 increased with an increase of aspect ratio and decrease of particle size. The crystallinity of the product has a significant influence on its photocatalytic activity. BiPO4 with higher crystallinity has higher photocatalytic activity, and monoclinic BiPO4 has higher photocatalytic activity than hexagonal BiPO4.

Abstract:The synthesis of anthracene (AN) nanowires and perylene (PY) nanorods on the basis of solid-phase organic reactions under controlled conditions is discussed, and the structures are confirmed by SEM, TEM, and XRD. The dimension-dependent emission properties of the AN nanowires and PY nanorods is observed. This approach is expected to form a new general route for the controlled morphosynthesis of organic molecular materials in restricted dimensions, with controlled size and shape, the solid-state physical properties of which are of great interest. It should have outstanding potential in providing customized 1D nanomaterials for a broad range of applications for molecule devices and nanoscience and is expected to be applicable other functionalized nanomaterials (i.e., organic, inorganic, and polymer).

Abstract:Single-crystal gibbsite nanorods with a high aspect ratio were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Characterizations by HRTEM, SAED, and XRD revealed that the nanorods prefer to grow along the c-axis. The nanorods can be easily transformed to chi-alumina by calcination at 250 degrees C, while the nanorod morphology is well-maintained. HRTEM indicates that the chi-alumina nanorod possesses a single-crystal-like structure formed by orientated connection of crystalline nanodomains. Altering the synthetic procedure will lead to alumina nanostructures with a different phase structure and morphology, such as alumina nanotubes.

Abstract:Silicon nano-wires (SiNWs) and boron nitride nano-tubules (BN-NTs) were successfully synthesized by excimer laser ablation at high temperature. These one-dimensional nano-materials synthesized by this method have a very high yield, a uniform diameter distribution, and a high purity. Micro-structures of these nano-materials were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The SiNWs have a high density of structural defects of microtwin, stacking faults, and low-angle boundary, which are closely related to the formation of SiNWs and the determination of morphology of the nano-wires. BN-NTs are mainly single atomic-layered and the outer surface of tubules is clean without any attachment. The formation of single atomic-layered tubule is attributed to the catalyst effect which makes the axial rate of BN-NTs much higher than the radial growth

Abstract:A novel seed-assisted chemical reaction at 95 degrees C has been employed to synthesize uniform, straight, thin, and single-crystalline ZnO nanorods on a hectogram scale. The molar ratio of ZnO seed and zinc source plays a critical role in the preparation of thin ZnO nanorods. At a low molar ratio of ZnO seed and zinc source, javelin-like ZnO nanorods consisting of thin ZnO nanorods with a diameter of 100 nm and thick ZnO nanorods with a diameter of 200 nm have been obtained. In contrast, straight ZnO nanorods with a diameter of about 20 nm have been prepared. Dispersants such as poly(vinyl alcohol) act spatial obstructors to control the length of ZnO nanorods. The morphology, structure, and optical property of the ZnO nanostructures prepared under different conditions have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and cathodoluminescence. The formation mechanisms for the synthesized nanostructures with different morphologies have been phenomenologically presented.

Abstract:In this article, for the first time, two-dimensional (2D) single-crystalline bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br) micro- and nanostructures, such as nanoplates, nanosheets, and microsheets, were synthesized in a large scale by a simple wet chemistry approach of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) direct oxidation of bulk metal bismuth (Bi) particles in a mixed solution followed by a hydrothermal treatment, instead of previous coprecipitation of Bi salts route. The in-plane size and thickness of the 2D products can be conveniently tailored by varying the temperature and the concentrations of the Bi precursor. The products were characterized by a range of methods, such as X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, selected area electron diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The BiOBr nanoplates, nanosheets, and microsheets have also been selectively synthesized via a similar route. The formation process investigation revealed that under hydrothermal treatment the spherical Bi oxhydrohalide nanopariticles could be side-by-side self-assembled to form Bi oxyhalide nanoplates by increasing the in-plane size, and nanosheets could be piled up to form Bi oxyhalide thick microsheets by increasing the thickness. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra revealed that the estimated band gap energies were about 3.5, 3.3, 2.3, and 2.1 eV for BiOCl nanoplates, BiOCl micro- and nanosheets, BiOBr nanoplates, and BiOBr micro- and nanosheets, respectively. It is expected that the present study could be extended to facile, large-scale synthesis of various multicomponent 2D inorganic micro- and nanostructures, which would have better performances than the corresponding spherical nanoparticles and would be the new members in the family of advanced functional inorganic materials well-applied in industry.

Abstract:A simple method was used to prepare monodispersed ZnO nanoparticles, which can be used as seeds for the synthesis of [0001]-oriented ZnO nanorods by refluxing. Based on the observation of shape and size of ZnO nanocrystals at different refluxing times and surface and attachment energies for various crystallographic planes calculated from the BFDH and HP models, a possible growth mechanism for ZnO nanorods was put forward to explain the experimental observations. The synthesized ZnO nanocrystals show green emission, which are correlated with the degree of oxygen vacancies in the samples.

Abstract:This article provides a comprehensive review of current research activities that concentrate on one‐dimensional (1D) nanostructures—wires, rods, belts, and tubes—whose lateral dimensions fall anywhere in the range of 1 to 100 nm. We devote the most attention to 1D nanostructures that have been synthesized in relatively copious quantities using chemical methods. We begin this article with an overview of synthetic strategies that have been exploited to achieve 1D growth. We then elaborate on these approaches in the following four sections: i) anisotropic growth dictated by the crystallographic structure of a solid material; ii) anisotropic growth confined and directed by various templates; iii) anisotropic growth kinetically controlled by supersaturation or through the use of an appropriate capping reagent; and iv) new concepts not yet fully demonstrated, but with long‐term potential in generating 1D nanostructures. Following is a discussion of techniques for generating various types of important heterostructured nanowires. By the end of this article, we highlight a range of unique properties (e.g., thermal, mechanical, electronic, optoelectronic, optical, nonlinear optical, and field emission) associated with different types of 1D nanostructures. We also briefly discuss a number of methods potentially useful for assembling 1D nanostructures into functional devices based on crossbar junctions, and complex architectures such as 2D and 3D periodic lattices. We conclude this review with personal perspectives on the directions towards which future research on this new class of nanostructured materials might be directed.
