Abstract:A new simple low-temperature hydrothermal process without addition of any surfactant or complexing agent was put forward to synthesize uniform ZnO nanorods, in which hydrazine hydrate instead of NaOH was used as mineralizer. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy were used to characterize the product, the results of which reveal that uniform ZnO nanorods approximately 70 nm in width and 2 μm in length were formed at 150°C within 8 h. Prior to the hydrothermal process hydrazine hydrate reacted with ZnCl2 solution to form a complex, and the complex slowly decomposed in the hydrothermal process. All these characteristics were favorable to this additive-free hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanorods.

Abstract:Micrometer-sized ZnO with various shapes have been synthesized by a hydrothermal route with Zn(Ac)2/NH3·H2O in the presence of copper ions. Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to characterize the composition and structure of the samples, respectively. As-synthesized, the ultrasonic pretreatment, pH value, reaction time and hydrothermal temperature played important roles in crystal structure tailoring. Novel nut-like ZnO crystal with improved crystal quality was obtained with initial Zn2+/Cu2+ ratio of 10, at reaction temperature of 100°C, with initial pH of 7.0 and in a reaction time of 4h, with ultrasonic pretreatment. Time-dependent experiments show that transfer of the Cu ions plays a crucial role as it causes the difference in crystal growth velocity.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod arrays were fabricated on ZnO:Al seeded Si substrates with various reaction temperatures using a low temperature hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of ZnO nanorod arrays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It reveals that the ZnO nanorods grow vertically on Si surface with (002) preferential orientation. The transmittance spectra show the ZnO nanorod arrays fabricated at low temperatures have high transmittance in the visible region and decrease with reaction temperature increasing. Moreover, the same trend was also observed in the reflectance spectra of the ZnO nanorod arrays. The optimal reaction temperature is of 120 degrees C for ZnO nanorod arrays with high transmittance (similar to 80%) and low reflectance (similar to 10%) in the visible region. The superior optical properties make ZnO nanorod arrays promising for applications as transparent electrodes.

Abstract:The ZnO nanostructures have been synthesized by hydrothermal process in a dilute aqueous solution consisting of Zn(AC)2 and NaOH. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicates that the synthesized ZnO crystal is of hexagonal phase. By means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE–SEM), it has been revealed that the ZnO nanoparticles, nanorods and nanotips sequentially occur along with the hydrothermal process, during which the concentration of Zn source is ever decreasing. The nanoparticles terminated with pyramids firstly generate at the early stage of hydrothermal process; subsequently, a number of seed-crystals branch on the pyramids, furthermore, the homo-epitaxy based on which along the <0001> direction results in the formation of nanorods; finally, due to the extremely low concentration of Zn source, instead of the continual elongation of the nanorods, the nanotips dispersively occur on the top flat plane of nanorods as a result of selective epitaxy.

Abstract:This work focuses on the synthesis of tetragonal zirconia (ZrO2) nanocrystallites with diameters of 5 nm by a simple hydrothermal process in the presence of hydrazine hydrate. Structural characterization of the ZrO2 products using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the predominant crystal phase was the tetragonal phase. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images further showed that that the diameter of the majority of the tetragonal ZrO2 nanocrystallites was < 5 nm. Furthermore, we discussed the mechanism of the hydrothermal process and the critical roles of hydrazine hydrate in the hydrothermal formation of the small-sized ZrO2 nanocrystallites.

Abstract:ZnO nanorods are prepared by a hydrothermal process with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and zinc powder at 182°C. The samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The gas sensing properties of the materials have been investigated. The results indicate that the as-prepared ZnO nanorods show much better sensitivity and stability than the conventional materials. The PdO doping can improve the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensors. ZnO nanorods are excellent potential candidates for gas sensors.

Abstract:Novel tin (II) sulfide (SnS) nanoflowers were successfully synthesized via a simple thioglycollic acid (TGA)-assisted hydrothermal process at 250 °C. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry were employed to characterize the structure, morphology and chemical composition of the product, the results of which reveal that the product is composed of well crystallized orthorhombic SnS nanoflowers. The band gaps were obtained by analyzing UV-vis absorption spectrum; herein, the direct and indirect optical band gaps are 1.53 and 1.43 eV, respectively. Furthermore, we discussed critical factors (e.g., TGA, SnCl2/Na2S mol ratio of the reactants, hydrothermal temperature, and sulfur source) for hydrothermal formation of the SnS nanoflowers.

Abstract:A simple hydrothermal process is proposed for synthesizing SnO2 quantum dots (QDs), in which hydrazine hydrate is used as the mineralizer instead of NaOH. X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and UV - vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were employed to characterize the product. The HRTEM image shows that the diameters of the SnO2 nanoparticles fall into a small range of 2.3 - 3.1 nm, with the majority being less than the exciton Bohr radius of SnO2 (similar to 2.7 nm). Analysis of the DRS spectrum showed the band gap of the SnO2 QDs to be 3.88 eV, exhibiting a 0.28 eV blue shift from that of the bulk SnO2 (3.6 eV). The mechanism for hydrothermal synthesis of the SnO2 QDs using hydrazine hydrate as the mineralizer is discussed.

Abstract:Uniform ZnO nanorods arrays are grown directly from and on Zn foils in pure water under hydrothermal conditions at a relatively low temperature. The nanorods are 80–200 nm in diameter and ∼ 1 μm in length, which grow on the Zn foil along the [001] direction. By changing the pure water to a urea solution, a Zn compound ([Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2], a precursor of ZnO nanoflowers film, is created by self-assembly. The ZnO nanoflowers film can be easily obtained by heating the [Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2] compound in N2 at 350∘C for 5–6 hours. Possible growth processes of the ZnO nanorods arrays and the [Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2] nanoflowers are discussed. Photoluminescence properties of the as-prepared ZnO nanostructures have been measured. The ZnO nanorods array synthesized using our method has minimal defects so that only band-gap emission is observed. However, the ZnO nanoflowers film, obtained by heating the [Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2] nanoflower precursor in N2, is polycrystalline and displays strong defect-related emission.

Abstract:Self-assembled zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures consisting of nanorods were synthesized at low temperature by means of a one-step hydrothermal method using a mixture of hexamethylenetetramine, zinc nitrate [Zn(NO3)2·6H2O], and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Freestanding single-crystalline ZnO nanorods with polar surfaces on the sharp ends are congregated by the long-range electrostatic force resulting in the formation of ordered nanorod-based structures. The weak Van der Waals interaction causes random aggregation of some tiny nanostructures on the surfaces of the ordered nanostructures. As a result, sphere-like superstructures revealed by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are formed due to energy minimization. In addition, some interesting Raman and photoluminescence properties of the composite ZnO nanorod structures are also discussed in detail. Our results are beneficial to a better understanding of the formation mechanism of some ZnO superstructures.

Abstract:A simple method was used to prepare monodispersed ZnO nanoparticles, which can be used as seeds for the synthesis of [0001]-oriented ZnO nanorods by refluxing. Based on the observation of shape and size of ZnO nanocrystals at different refluxing times and surface and attachment energies for various crystallographic planes calculated from the BFDH and HP models, a possible growth mechanism for ZnO nanorods was put forward to explain the experimental observations. The synthesized ZnO nanocrystals show green emission, which are correlated with the degree of oxygen vacancies in the samples.
