Abstract:Silica nanowires provide strong mode confinement in a cylindrical silica-core/air-cladding geometry and serve a model system for studying nonlinear propagation of short optical pulses inside fibers. We report on the fiber diameter dependence of the supercontinuum generated by femtosecond laser pulses in silica fiber tapers with average diameters in the range of 200 nm to 1200 nm. We observe a strong diameter-dependence of the spectral broadening, which can be attributed to the fiber's diameter-dependent dispersion and nonlinearity. The short interaction length (less than 20 mm) and the low energy threshold for supercontinuum generation (about 1 nJ) make tapered fibers with diameters between 400 nm and 800 nm an ideal source of coherent white-light source in nanophotonics.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser as a pump source and a nanofiber as a nonlinear element is investigated by numerical modeling. Many parameters are taken into account involving input pulse duration, peak power and diameter of the nanofiber. The results show that the narrower the input pulse is, the easier the SCG could be observed. The relation between the spectrum broadening and the diameter of nanofiber is not a direct proportion. According to our simulation, the dimension of the nanofiber plays an important role in effecting the dispersion and then the generation of supercontinuum.

Abstract:We report on designing, fabrication and experimental characterization of highly nonlinear, tellurite glass photonic crystal fibers with engineered normal dispersion characteristics for coherent supercontinuum generation. Effectively single mode, air-hole lattice fibers, with measured, all-normal dispersion profiles as flat as -10 to -50 ps/mn/km over 1500-2400 nm wavelengths are developed and investigated. Supercontinuum spectra are measured for these fibers, with a spectral width covering 1100-2600 nm wavelengths under pumping with a robust, fixed-wavelength erbium fiber-based femtosecond laser, delivering 90 fs pulses, centered at 1560 nm with peak power below 40 kW. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first engineered microstructured fiber, which due to its high nonlinearity, enables a self-phase modulation and optical wave breaking-based supercontinuum pumped with a turn-key, 40 kW femtosecond laser at spectral widths obtainable with previous all-normal dispersion fiber designs only under pumping with systems delivering peak power in the MW range.

Abstract:We have demonstrated broad supercontinuum (SC) generation by using a highly nonlinear tapered tellurite microstructured fiber pumped by a 15-ps-pulsed laser with the peak power of 375 W. The fiber is characterized with a short section with a large diameter followed by a long section with a small diameter. The SC was mainly generated in the last 30-cm-long section which had a core diameter of 0.9 mu m and a zero dispersion wavelength around the pump wavelength. Such a core size and a dispersion profile were chosen to ensure the SC was mainly broadened by phase matched four-wave mixing. The SC spans from UV to mid IR. The 10 dB spectrum is from 780 to 1890 nm. The input peak power is much lower than conventionally adopted in the picosecond regime. The constructed SC light source is cost-effective, since neither femtosecond pulsed laser nor high power picosecond pulsed laser is adopted. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report broad bandwidth, mid-IR supercontinuum generation using a sub-cm (8 mm) length of highly nonlinear tellurite microstructured photonic crystal fiber (PCF). We pump the fiber at telecommunication wavelengths by using 1550 nm, 100 fs pulses of energy E=1.9 nJ. When coupled in the PCF, these pulses result in a supercontinuum (SC) bandwidth of 4080 nm extending from 789 to 4870 nm measured at 20 dBm below the peak spectral power. This bandwidth is comparable or in excess of previously reported spectra for other nonlinear glass fiber formulations despite the significantly shorter fiber length. In addition, besides offering a convenient pump wavelength, short fiber lengths enable smoother SC spectra, lower dispersion, and reduced material absorption at longer wavelengths making the use of this PCF particularly interesting.

Abstract:The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pumping at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.

Abstract:Formating mechanism of supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is studied. Using nonlinear polarization rotation technique, a stable femtosecond optical pulse with the central wavelength of 1556.0 nm as pumping source is obtained, and by delivering this pulse into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, a supercontinuum with the 20 dB bandwith about the 140 nm has been obtained in experiment; Supercontinuum generation in different pump power was experimentally and numerically investigated. It is shown that supercontinuum has the different formatting mechanism with different pump power, and under various nonlinear effects, the more higher of the pump power; the more wide of the supercontinuum. It is found that qualitative agreement between the experiments and the simulations, the simulations shows that it exists an optimal fiber length for generation of the flat, broad supercontinuum. The SC band bandwidth will became smoother and broader by the frequency chirp.

Abstract:An all-solid photonic bandgap fiber with the first bandgap from 450 to 900 nm was designed for visible supercontinuum generation. Sub-nanosecond pulses from a 532-nm microchip laser were launched into this fiber, and the supercontinuum from 532 to 900 nm was obtained. The bright single-mode visible light beam was observed, with the output power of 30 mW.

Abstract:We demonstrate the broadband cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) and supercontinuum (SC) generation in a tellurite MOF which is made from 76.5TeO(2)-6ZnO-11.5Li(2)O-6Bi(2)O(3) (TZLB, mol%) glass. By using a 2-mu m picosecond laser with the center wavelength of similar to 1958 nm as the pump source, the broadband FWM with the frequency separation of similar to 1.1 THz is obtained. The bandwidth of the frequency comb spans a range of similar to 630 nm from similar to 1620 to 2250 nm at the average pump power of similar to 125 mW. With the average pump power increasing to similar to 800 mW, the broadband mid-infrared SC generation with the spectrum from similar to 900 to 3900 nm is observed. Changing the pump source to a femtosecond laser (optical parametric oscillator, OPO) with the center wavelength of similar to 2000 nm, solitons and dispersive waves (DWs) are obtained. Abstract:In this paper a method for obtaining a high-power ultrashort pulse with ultrabroad bandwidth has been investigated. A theoretical investigation of the propagation and supercontinuum generation of the highly chirped pulse having been stretched and amplified are presented by numerical simulations in microstructured optical fiber. Comparing with the case of a chirp-free pulse, a chirped pulse with the same peak power and initial bandwidth can produce a broader supercontinuum spectrum with higher average power. After a felicitous compression, a high power ultrashort pulse that has an ultrabroad bandwidth much larger than that of the pump pulse can be produced.

Abstract:Physical mechanism of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber by femtosecond laser pulse has been investigated experimentally. In this study, we used the tunable output wavelength Ti: sapphire optical parametric amplifier as the pump source and the fiber spectrometer acquired the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber under different power and wavelength conditions, then we normalized the spectrograms and make a comparison of them. PCF supercontinuum differences affected by physical mechanisms were analyzed. We found that when increasing the incident pump pulse power, the spectral width will be gradually widened, there are more peaks, part of the energy will transfer in to the short-wave- length region; as long as it reaches a certain intensity, width of supercontinuum finally saturated, the shape of supercontinuum was also stabilized. As the incident power was settled at 300 milliwatt and the length of PCF was settled at 105 millimeter, experimental results show that width and shape of supercontinuum are affected by the wavelength of pump pulse, in the range of 760 to 840 nm, there appears more and more peaks with the increase of incident wavelength; at anomalous dispersion the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation will be more flat and more wider as the wavelength of pump pulse closer to zero point.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation has received extensive attention because of the innovation of high nonlinear fiber, which makes the supercontinuum system more simple, compact, and efficient. Nonlinear effects are enhanced greatly during the strong interaction between the light and matter in high nonlinear fiber, and the spectrum will be broadened effectively. In this paper, we demonstrate the supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber and a conventional tapered single-mode fiber pumped by the mode-locked Yb fiber laser. Through the experimental comparison of the supercontinuum spectrum between two kinds of the high nonlinear fibers, the spectral flatness, Raman perturbation, and dispersion wave radiation are discussed for studying the characteristics of supercontinuum generation. Finally, the octave supercontinuum-based both kinds of high nonlinear fibers could be achieved. In particular, the employment of tapered single-mode fiber is proven to be an appropriate candidate for supercontinuum generation and further application.

Abstract:An ultra-flat, high-power supercontinuum generated from a picosecond telecommunication fiber laser was presented. The pulse from a carbon nanotube mode-locked oscillator was amplified using an Er-Yb codoped fiber amplifier. The output of the system achieved an average power of 2.7 W, with the center wavelength at 1564 nm and a FWHM of 6 nm in the spectral domain. By passing this amplified high-power pulse through a 4.6 m highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, an ultra-flat supercontinuum spanning 1600-2180 nm is generated. And the average power of the supercontinuum achieves 1 W.

Abstract:The octave-spanning spectrum was generated in a tellurite glass based microstructured fiber pumped by a 528 MHz repetition rate Yb:fiber ring laser without amplification. The laser achieved 40% output optical-to-optical efficiency with the output power of 410 mW. By adjusting the grating pair in the cavity, this oscillator can work at different cavity dispersion regimes with the shortest dechirped pulse width of 46 fs. The output pulses were then launched into a high-nonlinearity tellurite fiber, which has the zero-dispersion wavelength at ~1 μm. The high nonlinearity coefficient (1348 km⁻¹W⁻¹) and the matched zero-dispersion wavelength with pump laser enable the octave-spanning supercontinuum generated from 750 nm to 1700 nm with the coupled pulse energy above 10 pJ.

Abstract:This article introduces a new model of a circular silica-based photonic crystal fiber with a hollow core filled with C 6 H 6 . The difference in the air hole size and the distance between them in the first ring around the core has a profound effect on the dispersion, leading to ultra-flat dispersion with values as low as ±0.996 ps nm −1 · km in wavelength range 0.74 μm. The high nonlinear coefficient of several 1000 W −1 · km −1 and the low confinement loss of a few tens of dB m −1 suggest proposing three fibers with dispersion and nonlinear properties suitable for broadband supercontinuum generation at low peak power. The influence of peak power on the broadening of the supercontinuum spectrum is also investigated. Fibers with a flat all-normal dispersion profile provide a smooth spectrum with bandwidths of 1.215 and 1.626 μm at 30 dB with a peak power of 250 W. A fiber with an anomalous dispersion regime generates a supercontinuous spectrum, broadening to 3.868 μm in the mid-infrared region (2.467 μm bandwidth at 30 dB) under laser pulse excitation with 130 W peak power. Our results provide further insights into the generation of broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum using liquid-core silica-fibers, which have great potential for applications in the fields of optical communications and optical sensing.

Abstract:Coherent supercontinuum light expanding from 1.4 to 4 μm is generated in a 4 cm long tapered fluorotellurite microstructured fiber (MF) pumped by a 1980 nm femtosecond fiber laser. The spectral broadening in the tapered fluorotellurite MF is caused by self-phase modulation, the Raman soliton, and red-shifted dispersive wave generation. Our results show that tapered fluorotellurite MFs are promising nonlinear medium for generating coherent broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum light.
