Abstract:Silica nanowires provide strong mode confinement in a cylindrical silica-core/air-cladding geometry and serve a model system for studying nonlinear propagation of short optical pulses inside fibers. We report on the fiber diameter dependence of the supercontinuum generated by femtosecond laser pulses in silica fiber tapers with average diameters in the range of 200 nm to 1200 nm. We observe a strong diameter-dependence of the spectral broadening, which can be attributed to the fiber's diameter-dependent dispersion and nonlinearity. The short interaction length (less than 20 mm) and the low energy threshold for supercontinuum generation (about 1 nJ) make tapered fibers with diameters between 400 nm and 800 nm an ideal source of coherent white-light source in nanophotonics.

Abstract:We report broad bandwidth, mid-IR supercontinuum generation using a sub-cm (8 mm) length of highly nonlinear tellurite microstructured photonic crystal fiber (PCF). We pump the fiber at telecommunication wavelengths by using 1550 nm, 100 fs pulses of energy E=1.9 nJ. When coupled in the PCF, these pulses result in a supercontinuum (SC) bandwidth of 4080 nm extending from 789 to 4870 nm measured at 20 dBm below the peak spectral power. This bandwidth is comparable or in excess of previously reported spectra for other nonlinear glass fiber formulations despite the significantly shorter fiber length. In addition, besides offering a convenient pump wavelength, short fiber lengths enable smoother SC spectra, lower dispersion, and reduced material absorption at longer wavelengths making the use of this PCF particularly interesting.

Abstract:We report on designing, fabrication and experimental characterization of highly nonlinear, tellurite glass photonic crystal fibers with engineered normal dispersion characteristics for coherent supercontinuum generation. Effectively single mode, air-hole lattice fibers, with measured, all-normal dispersion profiles as flat as -10 to -50 ps/mn/km over 1500-2400 nm wavelengths are developed and investigated. Supercontinuum spectra are measured for these fibers, with a spectral width covering 1100-2600 nm wavelengths under pumping with a robust, fixed-wavelength erbium fiber-based femtosecond laser, delivering 90 fs pulses, centered at 1560 nm with peak power below 40 kW. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first engineered microstructured fiber, which due to its high nonlinearity, enables a self-phase modulation and optical wave breaking-based supercontinuum pumped with a turn-key, 40 kW femtosecond laser at spectral widths obtainable with previous all-normal dispersion fiber designs only under pumping with systems delivering peak power in the MW range.

Abstract:We report a near two-octave spanning supercontinuum (SC) from 790 nm to 2900 nm in a nanostructured tellurite graded-index multimode fiber with a nanostructured core. We study the SC dynamics in different dispersion regimes and observe near-single mode spatial intensity distribution at high input energy values. Numerical simulations of the (3+1)D generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation are in good agreement with our experiments. Our results open a new avenue for the generation of high-power mid-infrared SC sources in soft glass fibers.

Abstract:In this paper we report a two octave spanning supercontinuum generation in a bandwidth of 700-3000 nm in a single-mode photonic crystal fiber made of lead-bismuth-gallate glass. To our knowledge this is the broadest supercontinuum reported in heavy metal oxide glass based fibers. The fiber was fabricated using an in-house synthesized glass with optimized nonlinear, rheological and transmission properties in the range of 500-4800 nm. The photonic cladding consists of 8 rings of air holes. The fiber has a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) at 1460 nm. Its dispersion is determined mainly by the first ring of holes in the cladding with a relative hole size of 0.73. Relative hole size of the remaining seven rings is 0.54, which allows single mode performance of the fiber in the infrared range and reduces attenuation of the fundamental mode. The fiber is pumped into anomalous dispersion with 150 fs pulses at 1540 nm. Observed spectrum of 700-3000 nm was generated in 2 cm of fiber with pulse energy below 4 nJ. A flatness of 5 dB was observed in 950-2500 nm range.

Abstract:The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pumping at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.

Abstract:Abstract This study proposes a photonic crystal fiber made of fused silica glass, with the core infiltrated with tetrachloroethylene (C 2 Cl 4 ) as a new source of supercontinuum (SC) spectrum. We studied numerically the guiding properties of the several different fiber structures in terms of characteristic dispersion, mode area, and attenuation of the fundamental mode. Based on the results, the structural geometries of three C 2 Cl 4 -core photonic crystal fibers were optimized in order to support the broadband SC generations. The first fiber structure with lattice constant 1.5 μm and filling factor 0.4 operates in all-normal dispersion. The SC with a broadened spectral bandwidth of 0.8–2 μm is generated by a pump pulse with a central wavelength of 1.56 μm, 90 fs duration and energy of 1.5 nJ. The second proposed structure, with lattice constant 4.0 μm and filling factor 0.45, performs an anomalous dispersion for wavelengths longer than 1.55 μm. With the same pump pulse as the first fiber, we obtained the coherence SC spectrum in an anomalous dispersion range with wavelength range from 1 to 2 μm. Meanwhile, the third selected fiber (lattice constant 1.5 μm, filling factor 0.55) has two zero dispersion wavelengths at 1.04 μm and 1.82 μm. The octave-spanning of the SC spectrum formed in this fiber was achieved in the wavelength range of 0.7–2.4 μm with an input pulse whose optical properties are 1.03 μm wavelength, 120 fs duration and energy of 2 nJ. Those fibers would be good candidates for all-fiber SC sources as cost-effective alternatives to glass core fibers.

Abstract:Abstract We report the design and theoretical study of a Ga‐Sb‐S chalcogenide glass‐based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) structure for mid‐infrared supercontinuum generation. The proposed design is engineered by adjusting the diameter of air holes in the cladding region and pitch, giving us control over the dispersion characteristics of the fiber. The optimized structure design offers the Zero Dispersion Wavelength of 5.2 μm. When pumped with 50 fs secant hyperbolic pulses of peak power 4.9 kW, for a fiber of length 8 mm at pump wavelength of 5 μm, the proposed structure design produces an ultra‐broadband supercontinuum spectrum spanning 1.5–14 μm. Proposed PCF design should be helpful in, biomedical imaging, supercontinuum sources, biosesning, and optical coherence tomography.

Abstract:We propose a single material microstructured optical fiber with more than five octave spanning supercontinuum generation. Due to using single material, compatibility checking between core and cladding material need not required. Moreover, the material is such chosen that optical transmission range is quite high in comparison to others. The fiber is designed in COMSOL platform and according to finite element method (FEM), numerical analysis is accomplished. Dispersion, confinement loss, nonlinearity etc. are investigated and exposed for a wavelength range of 2000-3000 nm. The proposed fiber reveals zero dispersion at 2200 nm, nonlinearity of 14,370 W-1km-1 and confinement loss around 10-9 order in dB/m. Finally, supercontinuum generation has been investigated inside the structure and obtained high coherence that span (from 1500 nm to 34,500 nm) over five octave. The generated spectrum fulfills the requirements for being applicable in frequency metrology, fiber laser and biophotonics. With the best of our knowing, such coherent and widened supercontinuua for single material fiber is yet to be proposed.

Abstract:Simulations are presented of a very broad and flat supercontinuum (SC) in both the normal and anomalous group velocity dispersion regimes of the same equiangular spiral photonic crystal fiber at low pumping powers. For a pump wavelength at 1557 nm and average pump power of 11.2 mW, we obtained a bandwidth >3 μm (970 nm–4100 nm) at 40 dB below the peak spectral power with fiber dispersion ∼2.1 ps/km nm at 1557 nm. In the same fiber, at pump wavelength 1930 nm and average pump power of 12 mW the SC bandwidth was more than two octaves (1300 nm–3700 nm) and dispersion was ∼1.3 ps/km nm at 1930 nm. This demonstrates the potential use of the fiber for multi-wavelength pumping with commercially available sources at fairly low power.

Abstract:Two structures of circular lattice Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) based on $Ge_{20}Sb_{15}Se_{65}$ (GSS) material have been proposed for a highly coherent broadband supercontinuum generation (SCG) in the mid-infrared region. Numerical studies on both structures show that the fundamental modes are well confined in the core while the confinement losses are very low. Also, the high nonlinear coefficient of 22.01 $W^{-1}m^{-1}$ and 17.99202 $W^{-1}m^{-1}$ for the two structures ensure that these structures can accomplish a high nonlinear activity. It has been found that broadband supercontinuum (SCs) spanning from 0.45 $\mu$m to 5.3 $\mu$m and 0.48 ${\mu}$m to 6.5 ${\mu}$m can be generated using a hyperbolic secant pulse of 0.5 kW. The proposed structures also show very good structural tolerance to optical properties that prevent any radical shift in SC spectra owing to potential fabrication mismatch.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of an index guided highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber which promises to yield very large birefringence ~3.33 X 10^(-2) at 1550 nm and ~1.75 X 10^(-2) at 1064 nm as well as large effective nonlinearity ~80 W^(-1)km^(-1). Optical supercontinuum generation in the proposed fiber using a 1064 nm pump source with peak power of 1kW has been also presented. Finite difference time domain method (FDTD) has been employed to examine the optical properties such as fiber birefringence, mode field, V-parameter, walk-off and optical nonlinearity, while the Split-step Fourier method is used to solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation felicitating the study of supercontinuum generation. Simulation results indicate that horizontal input pulse yields superior continuum in comparison to that of the vertically polarized input. However, the broadening of the continuum is about 1450 nm in case of horizontally polarized input light whereas it is approximately 2350 nm for vertically polarized.

Abstract:In this paper we theoretically study the broadband mid-IR supercontinuum generation (SCG) in a lead-silicate microstructured fiber (the glass for simulation is SF57). The total dispersion of the fiber can be tailored by changing the core diameter of the fiber so that dispersion profiles with two zero dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) can be obtained. Numerical simulations of the SCG process in a 4cm long SF57 fiber/fiber taper seeded by femto-second pulses at telecommunications wavelength of 1.55µm are presented. The results show that a fiber taper features a continuous shift of the longer zero dispersion wavelength. This extends the generated continuum to a longer wavelength region compared to fibers with fixed ZDWs. The phase-matching condition (PMC) is continuously modified in the fiber taper and the bandwidth of the generated dispersive waves (DWs) is significantly broadened.
Supercontinuum generation in high-index doped silica photonic integrated circuits under diverse pumping settings

Abstract:Recent advances in supercontinuum light generation have been remarkable, particularly in the context of highly nonlinear photonic integrated waveguides. In this study, we thoroughly investigate supercontinuum (SC) generation in high-index doped silica glass integrated waveguides, exploring various femtosecond pumping wavelengths and input polarization states. We demonstrate broadband SC generation spanning from 700 nm to 2400 nm when pumping within the anomalous dispersion regime at 1200 nm, 1300 nm, and 1550 nm. In contrast, pumping within the normal dispersion regime at 1000 nm results in narrower SC spectra, primarily due to coherent nonlinear effects such as self-phase modulation and optical wave breaking. Additionally, we examine the impact of TE/TM polarization modes on SC generation, shedding light on the polarization-dependent characteristics of the broadening process. Moreover, Raman scattering measurements reveal the emergence of two new peaks at 48.8 THz and 75.1 THz in the Raman gain curve. Our experimental results are supported by numerical simulations based on a generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation that incorporates the new Raman gain contribution. Finally, relative intensity noise measurements conducted using the dispersive Fourier transform technique indicate excellent stability of the generated SC spectra.

Abstract:An equiangular spiral photonic crystal fiber (ES-PCF) design in soft glass is presented that has high nonlinearity ( gamma > 5250 W-1 middot km-1 at 1064 nm and gamma > 2150 W-1 middot km-1 at 1550 nm) with a low and flat dispersion (D ~ 0.8 ps/kmmiddotnm and dispersion slope ~ -0.7 ps/km middot nm2 at 1060 nm). The design inspired by nature is characterized by a full-vectorial finite element method. The ES-PCF presented improves over the mode confinement of triangular core designs and dispersion control of conventional hexagonal PCF, combining the advantages of both designs; it can be an excellent candidate for generating supercontinuum pumped at 1.06 mum.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of a lower index oxide layer inclusion within a highly doped silica glass slot waveguide for optimized supercontinuum generation at telecom wavelengths. By controlling the thickness of the oxide slot, we demonstrate that one can engineer the waveguide dispersion profile so that to obtain supercontinua with vastly different spectral broadening dynamics and bandwidths. Using this approach, we designed and fabricated a waveguide with a low and flat dispersion profile of less than 43 ps/km/nm across a wavelength range spanning over 1000 nm. We show that, when pumped at the telecom C-band, we can generate a supercontinuum that spans over 1.5 octave, from approximately 817 nm to 2183 nm. The numerical simulations, whose parameters are derived from the measured waveguide dimension and material indices, exhibit good agreement with experimental measurements, where one can observe both a qualitative and quantitative match in the supercontinuum overall spectrum and specific features (e.g. soliton and dispersive wave locations). This study represents an important step forward in the control and manipulation of dispersive and nonlinear dynamics in highly doped silica glass waveguides, paving the way towards advanced on-chip broadband light manipulation.

Abstract:Supercontinuum (SC) generation in solid-core circular photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) made of Ge 20 Sb 5 Se 75 is numerically analyzed. A large core is projected to increase light coupling efficiency into selected PCFs as well as raise coupling to standard silica fibers. High nonlinear coefficient and near-zero flat dispersion allow ultraflat SC spanning 1.5–4.6 μm in an all-normal dispersion regime. This requires 3 kW of peak power with 180 fs of pulse duration. The fiber with one zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW) generates SC bandwidth in the range of 1.54–7.39 μm at 3.5 μm using peak power of 10 kW. For the same input power, the SC spectral covers from 1.39 to 7.36 μm in 10 cm of fiber with two ZDWs. These are wider SC bandwidths than those of previous chalcogenide fibers reached with lower peak powers. Therefore, the proposed Ge 20 Sb 5 Se 75 PCFs are excellent candidates for the broadband ultraflat mid-infrared SC spectra used in high-speed nonlinear imaging and frequency measurement.

Abstract:Coherent supercontinuum light expanding from 1.4 to 4 μm is generated in a 4 cm long tapered fluorotellurite microstructured fiber (MF) pumped by a 1980 nm femtosecond fiber laser. The spectral broadening in the tapered fluorotellurite MF is caused by self-phase modulation, the Raman soliton, and red-shifted dispersive wave generation. Our results show that tapered fluorotellurite MFs are promising nonlinear medium for generating coherent broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum light.

Abstract:A novel Segmented Clad-Graded Index (SC-GI) photonic crystal fiber with a circular core composed of As 38 Se 62 is proposed to realize the supercontinuum spectrum in the entire transparency range of As 38 Se 62 (2–10 μm). SC-GI PCF conveys dual Zero Dispersion Wavelengths at around 2.4 μm and 6.4 μm. The devised PCF also offers a very small effective mode area of 2.46 μm 2 and a very high nonlinear coefficient of 12,005 W −1 km −1 at the pump wavelength of 2.4 μm. Detailed numerical simulations reveal that a short length of SC-GI PCF (~ 28 mm) is capable of showing a broad SC spectrum ranging from 3 to 9.5 μm ( − 30 dB level of power) using an input source of moderate peak power (1.8 kW) pumping at 3.4 μm. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time report of SCG in Segmented Cladding Fiber design. The evaluated SC covers the transparency window of the background material and also covers the mid-IR region. Abstract:Improved long-wavelength transmission and supercontinuum (SC) generation is demonstrated by anti-reflective (AR) nanoimprinting and tapering of chalcogenide photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Using a SC source input spanning from 1-4.2 {\mu}m, the total transmission of a 15 {\mu}m core diameter PCF was improved from ~53 % to ~74 % by nanoimprinting of AR structures on both input- and output facets of the fiber. Through a combined effect of reduced reflection and red-shifting of the spectrum to 5 {\mu}m, the relative transmission of light >3.5 {\mu}m in the same fiber was increased by 60.2 %. Further extension of the spectrum to 8 {\mu}m was achieved using tapered fibers. The spectral broadening dynamics and output power was investigated using different taper parameters and pulse repetition rates.
