Abstract:A power-efficiency supercontinuum generation scheme based on a two-color pulse generator followed by a supercontinuum generation stage is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. After chirp compression and Mamyshev reshaping, pedestal-free two-color pulses are obtained. By two-color pulses pumping in a highly nonlinear fiber at the anomalous dispersion region, supercontinuum with a 20 dB width of 207 nm is achieved at a modest total pump power of 24 dBm, which covers the spectral range from 1456 to 1663 nm. Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser as a pump source and a nanofiber as a nonlinear element is investigated by numerical modeling. Many parameters are taken into account involving input pulse duration, peak power and diameter of the nanofiber. The results show that the narrower the input pulse is, the easier the SCG could be observed. The relation between the spectrum broadening and the diameter of nanofiber is not a direct proportion. According to our simulation, the dimension of the nanofiber plays an important role in effecting the dispersion and then the generation of supercontinuum.

Abstract:Graded-index multimode fibers attracted interest in nonlinear regime for their unique nonlinear dynamics characteristics. We report the supercontinuum generation pumped by a superluminescent pulse amplification in graded-index multimode fiber. Efficient supercontinuum was generated and the beam profile cleanup was observed. The speckle characteristics of this supercontinuum is measured and compared to another supercontinuum induced by a homemade mode-locked fiber laser. It is found that the supercontinuum generated by superluminescent pulse amplification attains a smoother speckle structure and lower optical coherence. Our results indicate that the superluminescent pulse amplification could be a more effective means to produce low coherent supercontinuum sources than traditional lasers.

Abstract:Formating mechanism of supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is studied. Using nonlinear polarization rotation technique, a stable femtosecond optical pulse with the central wavelength of 1556.0 nm as pumping source is obtained, and by delivering this pulse into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, a supercontinuum with the 20 dB bandwith about the 140 nm has been obtained in experiment; Supercontinuum generation in different pump power was experimentally and numerically investigated. It is shown that supercontinuum has the different formatting mechanism with different pump power, and under various nonlinear effects, the more higher of the pump power; the more wide of the supercontinuum. It is found that qualitative agreement between the experiments and the simulations, the simulations shows that it exists an optimal fiber length for generation of the flat, broad supercontinuum. The SC band bandwidth will became smoother and broader by the frequency chirp.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation has received extensive attention because of the innovation of high nonlinear fiber, which makes the supercontinuum system more simple, compact, and efficient. Nonlinear effects are enhanced greatly during the strong interaction between the light and matter in high nonlinear fiber, and the spectrum will be broadened effectively. In this paper, we demonstrate the supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber and a conventional tapered single-mode fiber pumped by the mode-locked Yb fiber laser. Through the experimental comparison of the supercontinuum spectrum between two kinds of the high nonlinear fibers, the spectral flatness, Raman perturbation, and dispersion wave radiation are discussed for studying the characteristics of supercontinuum generation. Finally, the octave supercontinuum-based both kinds of high nonlinear fibers could be achieved. In particular, the employment of tapered single-mode fiber is proven to be an appropriate candidate for supercontinuum generation and further application.

Abstract:A novel method for efficient generation of high power, equalized continuous-wave supercontinuum source in an all conventional silica fiber architecture is demonstrated. Highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is pumped in its anomalous dispersion region using a novel, high power, L-band laser. The L-band laser encompasses a 6th order cascaded Raman amplifier which is pumped with a high power Ytterbium doped fiber laser and amplifies a low-power, tunable L-band seed source. The supercontinuum generated 35W of power with ~40% efficiency. The Supercontinuum spectrum was measured to have a high degree of flatness of better than 5 dB over 400 nm of bandwidth (1.3 - 1.7 micron, limited by spectrum analyzer range) and a power spectral density in this region of >50 mW/nm. The extent of the SC spectrum is estimated to be upto 2 micron

Abstract:A 74 nm, 2.5 GHz stable supercontinuum pulse source has been demonstrated with a gain-switched DFB laser as pump source. The stable, narrow pulses with mean pulsewidth of 4.8 ps are filtered out across the whole SC bandwidth. The experimental results verify some theoretical simulations.

Abstract:177.6 W near-infrared supercontinuum generation in a nonlinear fiber amplifier is first demonstrated. An all-normal dispersion master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration is adopted and an all-fiber structure is realized. The supercontinuum stretches from 1064 to 2000 nm with a 10 dB spectral width of 740 nm and 56% optical to optical conversion efficiency. The average spectral power density across the whole continuum is more than 150 mW nm−1 and the effective pulse energy is above 0.3 mJ, which paves the way for high-power supercontinuum generation at a level of hundreds of watts.

Abstract:An all-fiber supercontinuum source based on graded-index multimode fibers is reported. The supercontinuum source is based on a homemade mode-locked oscillator and a three-stage picosecond amplifier, which obtained the supercontinuum by a graded-index multimode fiber. The laser output with a spectral range of 480-2440 nm, an average power of 25 W, and a repetition frequency of 8.27 MHz is obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power for generating a supercontinuum with an all-fiber structure based on the graded-index fiber. The effects of GRIN fiber length and different pump peak powers on the supercontinuum generation are also verified. The results showed that the graded-index multimode fiber can effectively obtain a supercontinuum with high power.

Abstract:The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pumping at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.

Abstract:Spectral broadening of spectrum-sliced amplified spontaneous emission (SS-ASE) in highly nonlinear, dispersion-shifted fiber in different dispersion regimes is investigated experimentally. We find that, the spectral noise of the amplified SS-ASE pump from Er3+-doped fiber amplifier seeds the spectral broadening via four-wave mixing or modulation instability. Stimulated Raman scattering, red-shifted Raman solitons, and blue-shifted dispersion waves all enhance the broadening of the spectrum. The effect of the polarization state of pump on supercontinuum generation is also investigated, and it is found that, linear polarization is more efficient than random polarization for pumping supercontinuum. Supercontinuum with −10dB bandwidth of 200nm is generated by launching linearly polarized pump with 33.5dBm power into anomalous dispersion regime near to zero dispersion wavelength of fiber.

Abstract:We report an enhanced supercontinuum generation (SCG) in a conventional highly nonlinear fiber through injecting double bound-state solitons, which eliminates the residual pump peak existing in conventional SCG. The use of these phase-locked pulse pairs yields a novel multiple coherent pump technique. We further compare the SCGs pumped by conventional bound-state soliton and single-soliton. It confirms that the effective elimination of the residual pump peak in supercontinuum owes to higher transferring efficiency of the pump energy to newly generated frequencies in the multiple coherent pump scheme. The obtained results provide a new and simple method to obtain a flat supercontinuum source.

Abstract:Large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber is used to generate high power, high beam quality supercontinuum. Propagation and supercontinuum generation process of laser pulse in large-mode-area (LMA) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is simulated by solving the general nonlinear Schrödinger equation (GNLSE) using the split-step Fourier method. Effects of the pump pulse parameters (peak power and chirp) and the length of photonic crystal fiber used on supercontinuum generation are particularly estimated. Nonlinear spectral broadening mechanism of laser pulse in large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber is discussed. The results show that the process of supercontinuum generation can be divided into three stages: initial broadening, dramatic broadening and saturation broadening. The spectrum width and efficiency can be achieved by the optimized length of LMA PCF to insure output of the generated supercontinuum at the dramatic broadening stage. The pump peak power and chirp have important impact on supercontinuum generation. When a small peak power pump is input, the spectrum broadens symmetrically. When the pump peak power increases, it brings little changes with the shorter wavelength component but broader of the longer wavelength component. The time-domain shape of the pulse exhibits concussion modulation as the effect of pulse breakup. When the pump chirp is positive, little influence is shown, except a shift of longer wavelength power by increasing the chirp. But the full width of the supercontinuum has little changes. While the pump chirp is negative and satisfy certain condition, the nonlinear is enhanced to facilitate the supercontinuum generation.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber high-power linearly polarized supercontinuum source with polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fibers (PM-PCFs) as the nonlinear medium. The source exhibits an average output power of 3.8 W with a flat spectrum from 480 nm to 2100 nm at the $-$ 10 dB level, except for the residual pump peak. The polarization extinction ratio (PER) is measured to be greater than 20 dB at selected sample wavelength points (532 nm, 1064 nm and 1550 nm) at the highest pump power level and greater than 20 dB at all wavelengths from 800 nm to 1500 nm at the low pump power level. We also experimentally study the spectral properties when the pump light propagates along different axes of the PM-PCF. The results show that propagating parallel to the slow axis enables a broader spectrum in the PM-PCF in this case, probably due to matching of the dispersion properties with the pump light, which is qualitatively in accordance with the numerical simulation. To our best knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a watt-level linearly polarized supercontinuum source generated from PM-PCFs in an all-fiber structure.

Abstract:An ultra-flat, high-power supercontinuum generated from a picosecond telecommunication fiber laser was presented. The pulse from a carbon nanotube mode-locked oscillator was amplified using an Er-Yb codoped fiber amplifier. The output of the system achieved an average power of 2.7 W, with the center wavelength at 1564 nm and a FWHM of 6 nm in the spectral domain. By passing this amplified high-power pulse through a 4.6 m highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, an ultra-flat supercontinuum spanning 1600-2180 nm is generated. And the average power of the supercontinuum achieves 1 W.
