Abstract:This paper propose a new design method and optimization strategy for a compact cascaded 1×N optical power splitter.The splitter consists of N-1 1×2 splitter unit-cells connected by bent waveguides,cell-output connection is achieved by two joint waveguide bends.An evolutionary algorithm is used for structure optimization to minimize the device length to facilitate integration.BPM simulation results show that the device footprint and insertion loss are both reduced compared with a traditional optical power splitter design.
New Compact Design of Planar 1×N Branching Splitter

Abstract:We proposed a compact design of cascade Y-branch splitter devices. The new device consists of a 1 x N branching region and a fan-out region. The length requirement of this new design is analyzed, the results show that the device length can be sharply cut, when N is larger than 8. As an example of this new structure, we designed an 1 x 16 branching splitter by K+/Na+ ion-exchange in BK7 glass, the smallest S-bend radius is 30mm, and the total bends length is about 20mm, it is 69% length of ordinary splitter.

Abstract:A novel 1 × N optical power splitter has been proposed, to realize the desired specific optical power splitting, in which the asymmetric Y-branch waveguides based on total internal reflection have been introduced. The simulated results show that the arbitrary expected splitting can be achieved in the device. The device has been fabricated by using polymer materials, and it experimentally exhibits good uniformity at optical power output ports, which is consistent with the simulation prediction. The novel 1 × N optical power splitter has wide potential application in the integrated optical system.

Abstract:Optical power splitters are critical components of photonic integrated circuits based on the lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. However, the lithium niobate power splitters designed by traditional strategies are usually large in size, which limits their practical applications for on-chip high dense integration. Here, we focus on the efficient design of ultra-compact power splitters based on the LNOI platform. The Y-junction and T-junction 1 × 2 power splitters based on photonic-crystal-like (PhC-like) structures are designed by a genetic algorithm. The footprint of the functional region for Y-junction and T-junction power splitters are only 2.6 μm × 2.6 μm and 2.85 μm × 4.94 μm, respectively. Simulation results show that the insertion losses are about 0.1 dB and 0.7 dB at 1550 nm for these two kinds of devices. This work can as a generic approach for designing various ultra-compact functional devices based on LNOI platform.

A Fast OPC Algorithm for IC Layout Based on 1-D Cells after Optimization of Gap Distribution

Abstract:As VLSI technology scales down to 45nm process node, reliable printing becomes a persistent huge challenge to IC's manufacturability. The limitation of RETs now forces people to adopt a regular 1-D cell design methodology. A method of extending the line-ends and inserting dummies to optimize the gap distribution, with which the layout based on 1-D cells could get better printability, has been proposed in recent studies. In this paper, we present a fast OPC algorithm for IC layout based on 1-D cells after the previously proposed optimization of gap distribution. With this algorithm, during the OPC process, the extended parts and dummies of the layout are excluded from correction to save run time, and only the functional parts of the layout will be corrected.Experimental results on 45 nm process show excellent efficiency of this algorithm.

Abstract:This paper describes an automatic optimization method for multi-chip power module (MCPM) layout based on template generation and evolutionary computation techniques. The method is developed with particular emphasis on reducing the commutation inductance and balancing the branch inductances among paralleled chips of the module. An automatic layout generation from netlist and design constraints to ready-to-fabricate prototype is carried using two-step graph-based template generation and genetic algorithm-based sizing approach. The method employs the built-in multi-port discrete circuit model for fast evaluation of layout inductance for parasitics extraction. An analytical model is also established to assist the design of embedded snubber in the post-process stage. The layout design of a 4-chip SiC module is demonstrated. Both the simulations and the experiments are conducted to illustrate the advantage of performing the automatic optimization from the initial stage of the design process.

Abstract:A design of a 1 × 2 multimode 3 dB optical power splitter using tapered couplers is proposed and investigated in this paper. As an example, a 1 × 2 splitter processing five-lowest order transverse-electric-polarized modes is designed and optimized by utilizing finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. To verify the feasibility of this novel design, the optimized device is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The coupling lengths of tapered couplers are respectively 6.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 3.5 µm, 5.0 µm, 5.0 µm, 7.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 5.0 µm, and 8.0 µm. Measurement results reveal that, for the fabricated splitter, the power uniformity varies from 0.041 to 0.88 dB, the crosstalk ranges from -23.96 to -14.12 dB, and the insertion loss changes from 0.089 to 1.50 dB within a bandwidth from 1520 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:A 1×8 GaAs/GaAlAs optical power splitter based on a MultiMode Interference (MMI) coupler was presented. The input and output single mode waveguides were optimized by the Discrete Spectral Index Method (DSIM) and a moderate square spot on the output in deep-etched rib waveguides was obtained. The fabrication tolerance was analyzed by using the Finite Difference Beam Propagation Method (FDBPM). The device was fabricated by using the dry etching technique and the near-field output obtained. The device shows polarization-insensitive, large fabrication tolerance, low theoretical excess loss and low power imbalance.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultra-compact and efficient power splitter on LNOI. The device is realized through the inverse design of a digital meta-structure and occupies a small footprint of only 4.8×4.8μm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> . The measured results show that the insertion losses are below 2.5dB across the wavelength band of 1500–1560 nm, and the power imbalance between the two output ports is within 0.3 dB.

Abstract:To fabricate high performance optical splitter with compact structure, 1×16 and 1×32 splitters with lengths below 25 mm are designed and fabricated on glass substrate, by Ag+-Na+ ion-exchange and field-assisted ion diffusion technology. Testing result shows: for right-half of 1×16 optical splitter, insertion loss is 9.87-10.84 dB, excess loss being 0.87-1.84 dB, and uniformity 0.97 dB. Loss and uniformity characteristics of splitters have reached international production level.

Abstract:As many silicon nanophotonic devices are polarization-dependent, a polarization beam splitter that divides TE and TM modes is an essential component for photonic integrated circuits. Various structures have been proposed for polarization splitters, but it is still challenging to simultaneously achieve low insertion loss, high extinction ratio, compact size and simplicity of fabrication. In this paper, we combine new machine learning methods with the principle of multimode interference to propose a novel design for a polarization beam splitter. Our design has low insertion loss (-0.17dB/-0.42dB) and high extinction ratio (-23.1dB/-23.4dB) at the central wavelength of 1550nm for TE/TM modes, with compact size of 2×19μm2 and fabrication constraints strictly satisfied. Furthermore, our design is a standard 220nm-thick single-layer device for the silicon-on-insulator platform, without any auxiliary structures, making it easy for fabrication. Since our design cannot be optimized by the most commonly used methods, we adopt several specialized techniques to Bayesian optimization for inverse design. In this paper, we also share these skills which are simple but effective, possible to solve much more complicated design problems than others.

Abstract:Improved approach to low-loss and high-uniformity multimode interference (MMI) devices is proposed in this paper. An optimized index contrast is selected to decrease the propagation constant errors of modes near cutoff in the MMI region. 1×N MMI splitters are analyzed by exact mode analysis. Results show that the loss and uniformity of this new structure are notably improved, especially when N is large. The loss of 0.0892 and uniformity of 0.0826 are acquired when N=32. A formulating approach for device-design is presented and it is suitable for all types of MMI couplers.

Abstract:In this Letter, a 1 × 3 polarization-insensitive optical power splitter based on cascaded tapered silicon waveguides is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. By utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, the structural parameters of the coupling regions are carefully designed to achieve polarization-insensitive property, compact size, low insertion loss, high uniformity, and broad bandwidth. The coupling length can be as short as 7.3 µm. Our measurement results show that, at 1550 nm, the insertion losses of the fabricated device operating in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations are, respectively, 0.068 dB and 0.62 dB. Within a bandwidth from 1525 to 1575 nm, the insertion loss is lower than 0.82 dB and the uniformity is less than 1 dB for the fabricated device operating in TE polarization, while the fabricated device operating in TM polarization can have an insertion loss smaller than 1.50 dB and a uniformity lower than 1 dB from 1528 to 1582 nm.

Abstract:Integrated optical power splitters are one of the fundamental building blocks in photonic integrated circuits. Conventional multimode interferometer-based power splitters are widely used as they have reasonable footprints and are easy to fabricate. However, it is challenging to realize arbitrary split ratios, especially for multi-outputs. In this Letter, an ultra-compact power splitter with a QR code-like nanostructure is designed by a nonlinear fast search method. The highly functional structure is composed of a number of freely designed square pixels with the size of 120×120 nm which could be either dielectric or air. The light waves are scattered by a number of etched squares with optimized locations, and the scattered waves superimpose at the outputs with the desired power ratio. We demonstrate 1×2 splitters with 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 split ratios, and a 1×3 splitter with the ratio of 1:2:1. The footprint for all the devices is only 3.6×3.6 μm. Well-controlled split ratios are measured for all the cases. The measured transmission efficiencies of all the splitters are close to 80% over 30 nm wavelength range.

Abstract:The planar lightwave circuit (PLC) splitter serves as a crucial component in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). Diverse applications in complex scenarios necessitate a variety of PLC splitters, thereby escalating the complexity of their design. A novel optimization method based on orthogonal experimental design (OED) integrating a backpropagation neural network (BPNN) with a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. The optimization results demonstrate that for the 1×8 PLC splitter example, the insertion loss (IL), wavelength-dependent loss (WDL), and uniformity loss (UL) of the designed device are 9.2202 dB, 0.0915 dB, and 0.0914 dB, respectively. Compared to the previous results obtained using a single-parameter optimization method, which yielded an IL, WDL, and UL of 9.5 dB, 0.35 dB, and 0.30 dB respectively, there is a significant performance improvement.

Abstract:A 1×4 multimode interference optical power splitter was designed by means of guided-model propagation analysis. Considering the possible factors which influence the properties of the device in the procedure of design and fabrication, and the influence of the parameters such as the width, the length and the index of waveguide on the performance of the device was analyzed. Then the splitter was fabricated and measured. The measuring results show that the function of the fabricated device can be realized. In accordance with the problems occurred during the experiment and measurement, opinions and methods were presented to improve the performance of the device.
