Abstract:Integrated optical power splitters are one of the fundamental building blocks in photonic integrated circuits. Conventional multimode interferometer-based power splitters are widely used as they have reasonable footprints and are easy to fabricate. However, it is challenging to realize arbitrary split ratios, especially for multi-outputs. In this Letter, an ultra-compact power splitter with a QR code-like nanostructure is designed by a nonlinear fast search method. The highly functional structure is composed of a number of freely designed square pixels with the size of 120×120 nm which could be either dielectric or air. The light waves are scattered by a number of etched squares with optimized locations, and the scattered waves superimpose at the outputs with the desired power ratio. We demonstrate 1×2 splitters with 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 split ratios, and a 1×3 splitter with the ratio of 1:2:1. The footprint for all the devices is only 3.6×3.6 μm. Well-controlled split ratios are measured for all the cases. The measured transmission efficiencies of all the splitters are close to 80% over 30 nm wavelength range.

Abstract:The properties of two-fold images, based on asymmetric interference in multimode interference-based photonic crystal waveguides, are numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With these image properties, 2 x 2 power splitters (PSs) with an ultracompact size are designed. Arbitrary splitting ratio can be achieved by modifying the sizes (the effective refractive indices) of one pair of rods in the multimode region. As an example, a 3-dB 2 x 2 PS with a size of 24 x 8 mu m(2) is presented with an output efficiency as high as 98%. The method can be extended for the design of M x N PSs for photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:The key challenge of the plasmonic waveguide is to achieve simultaneously both the long propagation length and high confinement. The hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide consists of a SiO 2 stripe sandwiched between a Si-nanowire and a silver film and thus promises as a best candidate to overcome this challenge. We propose to exploit this unique property of this structure to design different high-efficient silicon-based plasmonic components including waveguide, power splitter, and wavelength-selective ring resonator. As a result, the proposed power splitter with a waveguide cross section ( λ 2 /60) and a strong mode confinement area (~ λ 2 /240) features a low power transmission loss (<0.4 dB) at the optimal arm length of 4 μm with respect to different separation distances of output arms. Moreover, we also demonstrate that a plasmonic ring resonator with a compact ring radius of 2 μm may achieve high optical performance such as high-extinction ratio of 30 dB, large free spectral range of 67 nm, and small bandwidth of 0.6 nm. These superior performances make them promising building blocks for integrated nanophotonic circuits.

Four devices with split ratios of 1:1:1:1, 2:2:1:1, 2:2:2:1, and 4:3:2:1 are inversely designed to conceptually prove the capability of arbitrary split ratios. Up to four design objectives including both efficiency and power ratios between the four outputs of each device have been jointly optimized. The total transmission efficiencies of all the algorithm-optimized splitters are above 80%, which is predicted by simulations. The power ratios are well consistent with the design targets as well. Then, the devices are fabricated on silicon-on-insulator platform with the device footprint of only 3.6 μm × 3.6 μm. The fabricated splitters are characterized at wavelength range from 1945 to 1975 nm. Abstract:The propagation performances of a double-chain splitter waveguide consists of coupled silver nanowires are investigated for different structures. We show that the efficiency of energy transport along the waveguide and split at a Y-junction due to surface plasmonic coupling is significantly depends on the parameters chosen for the structure such as radius of nanowire, opening angle of splitter and illuminating wavelength. The optimal structure for efficiently guiding and splitting the light at 600 nm is discussed in detail.

Abstract:We designed and demonstrated TE-mode arbitrary power splitters based on adiabatic mode evolution. The power splitters are designed with a footprint of smaller than 12 × 2.9 μm2, fabricated on a 400-nm silicon-on-insulator platform, requiring only a single etch step. The optimization process and the conditions for arbitrary-power splitting are performed using three-dimensional-FDTD simulations. We prove this concept through the fabrication of asymmetrical adiabatic evolution-based power splitters with splitting ratios of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. The fabricated devices are shown to agree closely with simulation results. Broadband operation with low insertion loss of 0.11–0.6 dB is demonstrated across the 3.66–3.89 μm wavelength range (230 nm). This component has applications in a multitude of areas such as spectroscopic optical sensing and optical phased arrays photonic integrated circuits etc.

Abstract:A novel 1 × N optical power splitter has been proposed, to realize the desired specific optical power splitting, in which the asymmetric Y-branch waveguides based on total internal reflection have been introduced. The simulated results show that the arbitrary expected splitting can be achieved in the device. The device has been fabricated by using polymer materials, and it experimentally exhibits good uniformity at optical power output ports, which is consistent with the simulation prediction. The novel 1 × N optical power splitter has wide potential application in the integrated optical system.

Abstract:As many silicon nanophotonic devices are polarization-dependent, a polarization beam splitter that divides TE and TM modes is an essential component for photonic integrated circuits. Various structures have been proposed for polarization splitters, but it is still challenging to simultaneously achieve low insertion loss, high extinction ratio, compact size and simplicity of fabrication. In this paper, we combine new machine learning methods with the principle of multimode interference to propose a novel design for a polarization beam splitter. Our design has low insertion loss (-0.17dB/-0.42dB) and high extinction ratio (-23.1dB/-23.4dB) at the central wavelength of 1550nm for TE/TM modes, with compact size of 2×19μm2 and fabrication constraints strictly satisfied. Furthermore, our design is a standard 220nm-thick single-layer device for the silicon-on-insulator platform, without any auxiliary structures, making it easy for fabrication. Since our design cannot be optimized by the most commonly used methods, we adopt several specialized techniques to Bayesian optimization for inverse design. In this paper, we also share these skills which are simple but effective, possible to solve much more complicated design problems than others.

Abstract:The self-imaging effect based on symmetrical interference in multimode layer-by-layer photonic crystal waveguides (PhCWs), is numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With the properties of twofold images, a kind of three-dimensional (3D) PhCW-based power splitters with an ultracompact size using complete photonic bandgaps is proposed, calculated, and analyzed. The presented structure can be extended for the design of M×N power splitters for 3D photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:Silicon photonics is becoming the leading technology in photonics for a variety of new applications. However, due to the large volume and high cost of traditional optical devices, they are not suitable for high integration. It is challenging to further improve the integration and performance of silicon photonics. Here, we proposed a power splitter designed by inverse design algorithm has high transmission efficiency and compact structure size, which is helpful to the integration of photonic integrated circuit (PIC). The emergence of inverse design algorithm makes a great breakthrough in the problems existing in optical devices. In recent years, inverse design algorithms have attracted researchers' attention because of their ability to regulate light transmission by changing the refractive index distribution in the subwavelength structure. Direct-binary-search (DBS) algorithm, as the most commonly used inverse design algorithm, is applied to the design of on-chip photonic devices because of its simple working principle and high optimization efficiency. As one of the important components of photonic integrated circuits, on-chip power splitter plays an important role in optical communication system. Power splitters which can achieve any power ratio are widely used in optical interconnect devices. The traditional arbitrary power splitter can achieve different split ratios through different structures, but they can not achieve controllable split ratios in the same device, which is an obstacle to the integration of PIC. Phase change materials have been widely used in controllable photonic devices due to their unique optical properties. We combined the DBS algorithm to program and control the Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 (GSST), divided the whole device into multiple units, and optimized the design of each unit. Finally, the phase distribution in line with the target splitting ratio was obtained, and the high-efficiency and small-size power distributor was realized. A 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solution was used to simulate the device, and the TE0 mode light from the input waveguide was transmitted through the coupling region to the upper and lower output waveguides. Simulation results show that the device size is only 2.4 x 2.4 um(2), and in the wavelength range of 1530 nm-1560 nm, the power split ratio of 1:1.5 and 1:2.5 is achieved. This method is helpful for the development of programmable integrated photonic interconnect devices.

Abstract:The optical beam splitter based on metal nanoslits containing nonlinear materials is designed and op timized.Finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method is employed to numerically simulate optical beam splitting properties of TM-polarized plane wave with a wavelength of 850 nm via subwavelength silver nanoslits containing nonlinear materials InGaAsP.The results show that the number of output ports or energy distribution can be adjust ed simply by changing the width,number or order of the nanoslits.The number of output ports can be dynamically controlled by changing the intensity of incident light.The symmetric structure of seven nanoslits possesses 1×5 symmetric optical beam splitting properties.Due to the more compact architecture,more output ports and the dy namical control method,the devices are important for potential applications in micro-nano photonic integration and optical communication.

Abstract:An asymmetric T-shape nanoslit in a metal film is proposed to act as an efficient dichroic surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) splitter, which is composed of a single nanoslit in immediate contacting with two nanogrooves with different widths. Simulations show that, due to the interferences of SPPs in the upper part of the asymmetric T-shape nanoslit, the generated SPPs propagating to the left and right directions on the front metal surface can be manipulated nearly independently by altering the right and left groove widths, respectively. Based on such effects, a dichroic SPP splitter is demonstrated and the splitting wavelengths can easily be adjusted. High splitting ratios of 31:1 and 1:12 at splitting wavelengths of 680 nm and 884 nm are numerically presented with a device's lateral dimension of only 1200 nm. Further experimental results match the simulations well.

Abstract:A compact surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) dichroic splitter based on three cascaded nanogrooves of different dimensions is proposed. Photons normally incident on the dichroic splitting structure are converted to surface plasmons propagating to the left or right on the metal surface depending on the incident wavelength. A new operation principle is proposed to guide the structure design. Proof-of-principle demonstrations show that a remarkable property of high splitting ratios of 36.7 dB (right: left power flow contrast) at a splitting wavelength of 600 nm and 42.4 dB (left: right power flow contrast) at a wavelength of 800 nm is realized. The proposed design concept has very general applicability across other operating wavelengths, such as the communication bands (i.e., 1310 and 1550 nm). (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel plasmonic power splitter with variable transmissions and selectable channels is presented using hexagonal resonator with inserted silver ellipse. Rotating the silver ellipse to different angles will break the symmetry of structure and change the propagation path of surface plasmon polaritons. The finite-difference time-domain simulation results reveal that the variable transmissions and selectable channels are achieved by rotating the inserted ellipse. Besides elliptical core, other components such as rectangular and triangular core are investigated in detail. It proves that the selection of channels and variable transmissions can be realized when the structural asymmetry is introduced into the hexagonal resonator by rotating the inserted asymmetric core. Furthermore, comparing the simulation results of three different structures, it is found that the power splitter with elliptical core has larger transmission when the output ports is selected and it is easier to adjust the transmission according to the requirements since its error range of rotation angle is larger than the others. Therefore, the power splitter with elliptical core is more suitable for realizing variable transmissions and selectable channels. The proposed device can realize the dynamic control of optical signals with the compact and simple structure. It may potentially be applied in on-chip signal routing and optical networks-on-chip.

Abstract:Fixed-length segment (FLS) optimization method offers a way to realize the high-efficiency analog inverse design of nanophotonic devices. However, due to the limitation of the variable dimensions and restricted search space, this method can hard to simultaneously achieve large bandwidth, compact size, and efficient performance when dealing with high-dimension design. Here, we propose a highly efficient variable-length segment (VLS) based inverse design method, aiming to solve complex analog inverse design and fully demonstrate the targeted performance. It divides the optimized region into several tapered segments of unequal length and inserts a subwavelength transition waveguide between each tapered segment, which can expand the search space of the algorithm, thus making it easier to obtain a better locally optimal solution. As typical complex proof-of-concept examples, a 1 × 4 power splitter on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform is chosen to demonstrate the validity of our design paradigm. The simulation results show that, compared with the conventional FLS, VLS has about 4–5 times higher efficiency and obtains better optimization performance. In our experiment, the fabricated device has a compact footprint of 9.8 μm × 4.9 μm and is complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatible. The measured insertion loss and the uniformity are less than 0.58 dB and 0.8 dB, respectively. In addition, the tolerances to fabrication errors are also investigated. Our work may find important applications in the advanced design of future nanoscale high-quality optical devices.

Abstract:An optical power splitter with one input and three output ports is proposed and demonstrated for near-infrared applications in the wavelength range of 2.3 to 2.5 mu m. The device operates on the principle of directional coupling by introducing photonic crystal line-defect waveguides. Its functionality and performance have been numerically investigated and simulated by the finite-difference time-domain method. By cascading two 1 x 3-structure power splitters, a large-scale optical power splitter with one input and five output ports is achieved. The simulated results show that the 1 x 5 large-scale power splitter can also perform 1 x 2, 1 x 3, and 1 x 4 functions. The required optical power from each of the output waveguides can be easily controlled by adjusting the coupling length of interaction for photonic crystal line-defect waveguides. The total length of the 1 x 5 power splitter is 40 mu m, which is significantly less than that of the conventional non-photonic-crystal power splitter.
