Abstract:We present a physics-based model for nonlinear analysis of InGaAs/InP modified uni-traveling carrier (MUTC) photodiodes. At low frequencies (<;3 GHz), the Franz-Keldysh effect has been identified as the primary nonlinear mechanism in these MUTC photodiodes. The output third-order intercept point (OIP3) is used as a figure of merit for characterizing the nonlinear intermodulation distortion. The OIP3 behavior of the photodiode simulated using this model agrees well with measurements.

Abstract:A linearization scheme based on two cascaded intensity modulators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By optimizing the biases, the power ratio and the phase difference between the drive signals applied to the two Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs), the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) can be effectively eliminated over a wide operating bandwidth of 1 to 12 GHz without the same RF phase at two modulators, which is required in previous works. The ratio of the fundamental output to the IMD3 reaches 50.21 to 63.28 dB, which has an improvement of 18.35 to 31.42 dB compared to that of a single MZM link. Abstract:The third-order intermodulation distortions of an InGaAs/InP modified uni-traveling carrier photodiode (MUTC-PD) are characterized using a two-tone setup. At 0.3 GHz modulation frequency and photocurrents above 40 mA the third order local intercept point (IP3) reaches 52 dBm and remains above 35 dBm up to the photodiode's 3 dB bandwidth. A simple equivalent circuit model is used to explain the frequency characteristics of the intermodulation distortions. Based on experimental data, we find that the frequency characteristics of the IP3 can be attributed to the change of both the responsivity and device capacitance induced by the photocurrent and the transient voltage drop at the load and series resistors. Further investigations of the non-linear phenomena suggest that the Franz-Keldysh effect and impact ionization are the primary reasons for voltage-dependent responsivity, while low doping concentration in the p-type InGaAs absorber and space charge screening are responsible for the voltage dependent capacitance and photocurrent dependent capacitance, respectively.

Abstract:Fluctuations of the optical power incident on a photodiode can be converted into phase fluctuations of the resulting electronic signal due to nonlinear saturation in the semiconductor. This impacts overall timing stability (phase noise) of microwave signals generated from a photodetected optical pulse train. In this paper, we describe and utilize techniques to characterize this conversion of amplitude noise to phase noise for several high-speed (>10 GHz) InGaAs P-I-N photodiodes operated at 900 nm. We focus on the impact of this effect on the photonic generation of low phase noise 10 GHz microwave signals and show that a combination of low laser amplitude noise, appropriate photodiode design, and optimum average photocurrent is required to achieve phase noise at or below -100 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz offset a 10 GHz carrier. In some photodiodes we find specific photocurrents where the power-to-phase conversion factor is observed to go to zero.

Abstract:A novel method is proposed for measuring the frequency response of photodiodes. This method calculates the frequency response of the photodiode based on the gain peaks of the phase-modulated interferometric detection using a microwave network analyzer, and the half-wave voltage of the phase modulator, which is calibrated by measuring the intensity ratio of the modulated optical side-bands with the optical spectrum analyzer. The experimental results show a good match between the frequency response of photodiode measured by phase-modulated interferometric detection and by Mach-Zehnder intensity-modulated direct demodulation, as well as the data provided by the photodiode manufacturer. It provides an easy way to quickly sweep the frequency response of the photodiode, and the bias-control is not needed when calibrating half-voltage of the phase modulator.

Abstract:Interferometric imagers based on integrated optics have the advantages of miniaturization and low cost compared with traditional telescope imaging systems and are expected to be applied in the field of space target detection. Phase measurement of the complex coherence factor is crucial for the image reconstruction of interferometric imaging technology. This study discovers the effect of the phase of the complex coherence factor on the extrema of the interference fringes in the interferometric imager and proposes a method for calculating the phase difference of the complex coherence factor of two interference signals by comparing the extrema of the interferometric fringes in the area of approximate linear change in the envelope shape to obtain the phase information required for imaging. Experiments using two interferometric signals with a phase difference of π were conducted to verify the validity and feasibility of the phase difference measurement method. Compared with the existing phase measurement methods, this method does not need to calibrate the position of the zero optical path difference and can be applied to the integrated optical interferometric imager using a single-mode fiber, which also allows the imager to work in a more flexible way. The theoretical phase measurement accuracy of this method is higher than 0.05 π, which meets the image reconstruction requirements.

Abstract:Third-order intermodulation distortions of an InGaAs/InP partially depleted absorber photodiode (PDA-PD) using high doping levels for both p-type and n-type absorbers are characterised using a two-tone measurement technique. The third-order local intercept point (IP3) of the device increases only slightly with frequency, and remains as high as 39 dBm up to 20 GHz. The frequency characteristics of the IP3 can be well explained by an equivalent circuit model.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion in a system with a phase modulator (PM) and a delay-line interferometer (DLI). The phase modulation and interferometric demodulation techniques are employed to realize quantization and encoding. In the system, the phase-modulated signal is optically sampled by a multiwavelength pulsed source and the phase-shifted transfer functions of the DLI under different wavelengths are used for encoding. In the approach, the differential signal, but not the original analog signal, is encoded, which increases the equivalent number of bits. In addition, the balanced detection technique can be incorporated into the system to alleviate the influences of amplitude and timing jitter.

Abstract:We propose a new method for characterizing optical phase modulators based on phase modulation-to-intensity modulation (PM-to-IM) conversion in dispersive fibers. The fiber dispersion spectrally alters the relative phasing of the phase-modulated signal and leads to the PM-to-IM conversion, which is extended to measure the modulation efficiency of optical phase modulators. In the demonstration, the frequency-dependent modulation index and half-wave voltage are experimentally measured for a commercial phase modulator. Compared with conventional methods, the proposed method works without the restriction of small-signal operations, and allows swept-frequency measurement with high resolution and accuracy by using a vector network analyzer.

Abstract:The linearity performance of a back-illuminated InGaAs/InP modified uni-traveling carrier photodiode with a highly doped p-type absorber is characterized using three-tone and bias modulation measurement techniques. The bias modulation measurement is used to determine the voltage-dependent relative responsivity, R(V), for a range of photocurrent levels. The results confirm that the photocurrent dependence of the third-order output intercept point (OIP3) as determined by the three-tone method is directly related to the dependence of R(V) on photocurrent. The measured OIP3 show a weak dependence on frequency and a high value of 47.5 dBm at 20 GHz is achieved.

Abstract:Characterization of a phase modulator or phase shifter has always been an integral part of phase-modulating or phase-adjusting applications. We propose a simplified approach to characterize a phase modulator by investigating the performance of phase shifts from grabbed interferograms using the phase extraction method. After reviewing some phase analysis techniques, the interframe intensity correlation (IIC) matrix method is introduced to the investigation. The proposed strategy is illustrated by the measurement of a free-space electro-optic modulator (EOM). Placing the modulator in one arm of a Michelson interferometer, the global phase shifts are estimated by the IIC method from the phase-stepped interferograms. Experimental results demonstrate the tested EOM has a phase modulation response of at least 2π rad with a π/20 rad modulation precision for λ=1064 nm. In addition, our method is applicable to various types of phase modulator or phase shifter calibration, e.g., electro-optic phase modulator, spatial light modulator, or piezoelectric transducer (PZT).

Abstract:A general analytical method by adjusting the phases of the signals applied to the four electrodes of a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) is proposed to suppress the third-order intermodulation (IMD3) in microwave photonic link. Through the detailed theoretical and numerical analysis, all the signal combinations for the four electrodes of the DPMZM are found and classified into three groups according to the IMD3 cancellation mechanism. In this process, a new group of the four electrodes’ setting to suppress the IMD3 is found. The simulation and experiment are carried out to verify our discovery. It is found that this newly found group can also suppress IMD3 by about 30 dB and improve the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) by 11.5 dB⋅Hz2∕3.
