Abstract:For a suspended core nanofiber, the holey region is expected to be as large as possible to propagate the light at wavelengths as long as possible. Additionally, a large holey region is significant for its applications in sensors. However, the fabrication of nanofiber with large holey region is still a challenge so far. In this paper a method, which involves pumping positive pressure of nitrogen gas in both the cane fabrication and fiber-drawing processes, was proposed. A suspended core nanofiber, with a core diameter of around 480 nm and an unprecedented diameter ratio of holey region to core (DRHC) of at least 62, was fabricated in the length of several hundred meters. Owing to the large holey region, the confinement loss of the suspended core nanofiber is insignificant when the wavelength of light propagated in it is 1700 nm. For this fabrication technique, the nanowire length, fabrication efficiency, and the uniformity in the diameter are much superior to those of the nanowires fabricated in other ways. Finally, single mode third harmonic generation was observed by this nanofiber under the pump of a 1557 nm femtosecond fiber laser. This work shows the prospect of fabrication of nanostructured waveguide in glass materials by an inflation technique.
Tellurite Microstructure Fibers with Small Hexagonal Core for Supercontinuum Generation.

Abstract:Tellurite glass microstructure fibers with a 1 microm hexagonal core were fabricated successfully by accurately controlling the temperature field in the fiber-drawing process. The diameter ratio of holey region to core (DRHC) for the fiber can be adjusted freely in the range of 1-20 by pumping a positive pressure into the holes when drawing fiber, which provides much freedom in engineering the chromatic dispersion. With the increase of DRHC from 3.5 to 20, the zero dispersion wavelengths were shifted several hundred nanometers, the cutoff wavelength due to confinement loss was increased from 1600 nm to 3800 nm, and the nonlinear coefficient gamma was increased from 3.9 to 5.7 W(-1)/m. Efficient visible emissions due to third harmonic generation were found for fibers with a DRHC of 10 and 20 under the 1557 nm pump of a femtosecond fiber laser. One octave flattened supercontinuum spectrum was generated from fibers with a DRHC of 3.5, 10 and 20 by the 1064 nm pump of a picosecond fiber laser. To the best of our knowledge, we have for the first time fabricated a hexagonal core fiber by soft glass with such a small core size, and have demonstrated a large influence of the holey region on the dispersion, nonlinear coefficient and supercontinuum generation for such fiber.

Abstract:For a suspended nanowire, the holes surrounding the core are expected to be as large as possible to propagate the light at wavelengths as long as possible. However, the fabrication of nanowire surrounded with large holes is still a challenge so far. In this paper, a method which involves pumping positive pressure of nitrogen gas in both the cane fabrication and fiber-drawing processes, is proposed. A suspended nanowire, with a core diameter of 480 nm and an unprecedented large diameter ratio of holey region to core (DRHC) of at least 62, is fabricated in the length of several hundred meters. Owing to the large holes, the confinement loss of the suspended nanowire is insignificant when the wavelength of light propagated in it is 1700 nm. Additionally, the tube-shaped glass cladding of the suspended nanowire shifts the single-mode cutoff wavelength to 810 nm, which is much shorter than the cutoff wavelength, 1070 nm, of a naked nanowire with the same diameter. A single-mode supercontinuum (SC) generation covering a wavelength range of 900-1600 nm is obtained under 1064 nm pump pulse with the peak power as low as 24 W. A single-mode third harmonic generation (THG) is observed by this nanowire under the pump of a 1557 nm femtosecond fiber laser. This work indicates that the suspended nanowire with large holes can provide high nonlinearity together with single-mode propagation, which leads to interesting applications in compact nonlinear devices.

Abstract:We have fabricated a highly nonlinear complex microstructure tellurite fiber with a 1.8 micron core surrounded by four rings of holes. The cane for the fiber was prepared by combining the methods of cast rod in tube and stacking. In the process of fiber-drawing a positive pressure was pumped into the holes of cane to overcome the collapse of holes and reshape the microstructure. The correlations among pump pressure, hole size, surface tension and temperature gradient were investigated. The temperature gradient at the bottom of the preform's neck region was evaluated quantitatively by an indirect method. The chromatic dispersion of this fiber was compared with that of a step-index air-clad fiber. It was found that this fiber has a much more flattened chromatic dispersion. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report about a soft glass microstructure fiber which has such a small core together with four rings of holes for the dispersion engineering. The SC generation from this fiber was investigated under the pump of a 1557 nm femtosecond fiber laser. Infrared supercontinuum generation, free of fine structure, together with visible third harmonic generation was obtained under the pump of a femtosecond fiber laser with a pulse energy of several hundred pJ.

Abstract:We report what we believe to be the first demonstration of the second and third harmonics in tellurite microstructured fibers pumped by a 1557 nm femtosecond fiber laser. The intensities of the second and third harmonics are enhanced by increasing the nonlinear coefficient of the tellurite microstructured fiber. By using tellurite microstructured fiber with a core diameter of approximately 2.7 microm, supercontinuum light expanding from 470 nm to 2400 nm could be achieved. The effects of the fiber-core diameter on the flatness of the supercontinuum light are also investigated when pumped at 1557 nm.

Abstract:Tellurite highly nonlinear microstructured fibers were fabricated by pumping a positive pressure of nitrogen gas into the holes of cane in the fiber drawing process. By adjusting the pump pressure to inflate the holes of the fiber, the microstructures were reshaped, and the chromatic dispersions were tailored. Two kinds of fiber were fabricated. One is an air-clad fiber with a 1 μm hexagonal core, which is the smallest core in this shape for the air-clad fiber. By changing the inflation pressure, the diameter ratio of holey region to core (DRHC) was changed in the range of 1-20. Fibers with DRHC of 3.5, 10, 20 were demonstrated. By increasing the DRHC, the zero dispersion wavelengths were shifted to the short wavelength and the confinement loss were decreased. Another is a complex microstructure fiber with a 1.8 μm core surrounded by four ring holes. The shape of the microstructure was reshaped so heavily by the inflation pressure that it is obviously different from the original shape in the cane. The correlations among pump pressure, hole size, surface tension and temperature gradient were investigated. The temperature gradient at the bottom of the preform's neck region was evaluated quantitatively. The chromatic dispersion of this fiber was compared with that of a step-index air-clad fiber. It was found that this fiber had a much more flattened chromatic dispersion. Supercontinuum generations were investigated by the pump of a 1557 nm femtosecond fiber laser. Intense third harmonic generations were obtained from the 1μm haxgonal core fiber. Broad and flattened spectrum was obtained from the complex microstructure fiber. This investigations show that, by using a positive pressure to reshape the microstructure and by controlling the fabrication conditions exactly, highly nonlinear soft glass fibers with desirable chromatic dispersion can be fabricated, and such fibers have interesting applications in highly nonlinear field such as THG and SC generation.

Abstract:Supercontinuum (SC) generation has the important applications such as broadband light source, optical coherence tomography, ultra-short pulse compression, and optical frequency metrology, etc. Tellurite glass is transparent in the mid-infrared range, and has a higher n(2) than silica glass by at least one order of magnitude. We have fabricated the hexagonally shaped tellurite air-clad fiber with a core diameter of around 1 mu m through controlling the temperature field exactly in the process of fiber-drawing. Since the SC generation strongly depends on the chromatic dispersion, which is determined by the microstructure of fiber, it is interesting to investigate and demonstrate such dependence for such a small core fiber in detail. In this work by pumping a positive pressure of nitrogen gas into the holes of preform, we obtained 1 mu m core fibers with diameter ratio of holey region to core (DRHC) varied from 3.5 to 20. The dispersion was tailored effectively by the variation of DRHC. Dependences of SC on the microstructure and dispersion were demonstrated. The pump lasers were picosecond and femtosecond fiber lasers. One octave flattened SC generation was obtained for the fibers pumped by 1064 nm picosecond fiber laser with the pulse energy of several hundred pJ. Intense second and third harmonic generations were obtained under the pump of a 1557 nm femtosecond fiber laser. The correlation of dispersion and SC spectra was analyzed. Such tellurite microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with high nonlinearity and controlled dispersion are significant in nonlinear applications.
Highly Nonlinear Tellurite Microstructured Fibers for Broadband Wavelength Conversion and Flattened Supercontinuum Generation

Abstract:We demonstrate four-wave mixing based broadband (>68 nm) wavelength conversion and flattened supercontinuum generation spanning from 900 to 2800 nm in a 36-cm long tellurite microstructured fiber which has a high nonlinearity. By reducing the size of air holes of the tellurite microstructured fibers, single mode propagation and small dispersion slope are obtained without the propagation loss enhancement. Our results show that chromatic-dispersion controlled tellurite microstructured fibers are promising candidates for nonlinear applications.

Abstract:Tellurium (Te) semiconductor core optical fibers with silicate glass cladding were drawn by the molten core method. The as-drawn precursor fiber has a large core diameter of about 123 µm, which was found to be polycrystalline. What is more, a Bridgman-type fiber postprocessing technique was constructed and used for the first time to anneal the polycrystalline Te semiconductor core optical fibers. The Te core in precursor fiber was melted and recrystallized to single crystal Te with c-axis orientation parallel to fiber axis, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, single crystal X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectra, and transmission electron microscope measurement results. Enhanced conductivities were observed in single crystal Te semiconductor core optical fibers under illuminated and stress states, respectively. This work demonstrates that the Bridgman-type fiber postprocessing technique could be an effective way to fabricate single crystal semiconductor core optical fibers with large core diameters (∼ 100 µm) and long lengths (a few centimeters).

Abstract:We report broad near-infrared soliton and associated dispersive wave source generation (1228–1867 nm) and tunable green third harmonic generation (528–542 nm) by LP11 mode excitation in a few-mode tellurite microstructure fiber pumped by a 1557 nm femtosecond fiber laser. The fiber presents a wide range of wavelengths in which the fundamental mode experiences normal dispersion, whereas the higher-order modes propagate in the anomalous dispersion regime. LP01 or LP11 mode can be selectively excited, and obviously different spectra are obtained based on the different mechanisms of supercontinuum generation.

Abstract:As a kind of semiconductors, tellurium has attracted much attention due to its superior optical, electrical, and thermoelectric properties. In particular, a lot of research on low-dimensional tellurium has been performed in recent years, but with relatively few work on its applications in ultrafast photonics. In this work, a femtosecond fiber laser was realized using the prepared tellurium nanowires as the saturable absorber. Tellurium nanowires were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and then deposited on the tapered optical fiber to form the tellurium saturable absorber (Te-SA). The saturable absorption property of Te-SA was tested by the two-arm balance detection method, the saturation intensity and modulation depth were determined to be 8.9 MW/cm2 and 27.0%, respectively. Then, Te-SA was applied in the erbium-doped fiber laser and a stable mode-locked fiber laser with a pulse width of 621 fs was achieved. The results indicate the great potential application of tellurium nanowires in ultrafast photonics.

Abstract:We demonstrate third-harmonic generation (THG) with a tunable spectral range of more than 500 nm in a step-index tellurite fiber. Third-harmonic (TH) signals with a peak wavelength from 524 to 1043 nm are obtained in a 3 cm-long fiber when the fundamental wavelength shifts from 1560 to 3100 nm. To our knowledge, the tunable spectral range covering almost one octave is the widest tunable range of THG in fibers so far. The far-field patterns of the TH signals by 1560 nm to 2100 nm pumping are recorded by a charge coupled device camera, which are close to the fundamental mode profile. The THG in such a wide tunable range is attributable to the high nonlinearity of the tellurite fiber and the high pump peak power of the pump pulse.
