Abstract:We report on the multiple midinfrared soliton generation based on a birefringent tellurite microstructured optical fiber pumped in the deep anomalous dispersion regime at 2 mu m. The wavelengths of the solitons can be continuously shifted to the longer wavelength region by the Raman-induced frequency shift effect. The central wavelength of the first soliton polarized parallel to the fast axis can be tuned as wide as 680 nm from 2050 to 2730 nm by adjusting the pump power. After the pump polarization is operated at 45 degrees to the fast axis, two soliton pairs can be generated by the optical trapping effect.

Abstract:We report the generation of multimode solitons in step-index fiber. The solitons are superpositions of 5-10 temporally-aligned transverse modes, they exhibit speckled beam profiles, and the spatio-spectral variation across the soliton can be complex. Greater understanding of multimode solitons should create a foundation for further research into complex multimode nonlinear phenomena in step-index fibers. With energies of tens of nanojoules and durations around 100 fs, the multimode solitons are speckled fields with peak powers that can exceeed 300 kW, parameters which may be valuable in applications.

Abstract:The evolution of mid-infrared (MIR) higher-order soliton fission in a tapered tellurite microstructured optical fiber (TMOF) is experimentally investigated. From similar to 30 to 80 mW, the redshift of the first fundamental soliton is obvious. From similar to 80 to 120 mW, two fundamental solitons are obtained by the fission of higher-order solitons. The redshift of the first fundamental soliton almost stops because the increased pump power is preferentially distributed to the second fundamental soliton. From similar to 120 to 180 mW, an obvious redshift of the first fundamental soliton is observed again, and a third fundamental soliton is obtained at similar to 180 mW. The evolution of each soliton is determined by the power distribution, which is, to the best of our knowledge, reported for the first time. (C) 2016 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:Widely wavelength tunable soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) from 1.58 μm to 2.07 μm was experimentally demonstrated in a highly nonlinear fiber pumped with a mode-locked sub-100 fs Er-doped fiber laser. The maximum output spectrum (full width at half maximum, FWHM) around 2 μm is 143 nm. Although the pulse width of SSFS was measured to be a few picoseconds, the large FWHM bandwidth of SSFS spectrum shows that soliton with sub-50 fs could be achieved if the giant chirped pulse is efficiently re-compressed to be transforms limited. Dispersive wave with a minimum pulse width of 50 fs was also observed.

Abstract:We present a numerical study on efficient mid-infrared Raman soliton generation in a tellurite microstructured optical fiber with femtosecond Tm-doped fiber laser pulses as the pump source. A tunable soliton exhibits a wavelength shift of up to 3.54 μm and a power conversion efficiency of up to 74.2% while consuming a pump peak power of no more than 1 kW at 1.96 μm, owing to the proper design of the dispersion and nonlinearity of the tellurite fiber. We investigated the effects of pump parameters on soliton properties and found that adjusting the pump pulse duration allows for a broader tuning range of up to 3.63 μm or a higher conversion efficiency of 94.5%. The study describes an effective means of constructing compact and efficient femtosecond tunable mid-infrared laser sources with low operation power, which will boost potential applications in the important region of above 2 μm.

Abstract:A soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) of about 140 nm in a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) has been demonstrated with 1560 nm pulses generated by a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser. The mode-locked fiber laser was achieved using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, producing 300 fs pulses with a repetition rate of 13.7 MHz at a wavelength of 1560 nm. The HNLF used has a length of 1010 m. The wavelengths of the resulting femtosecond solitons can be tuned from 1560 nm to 1700 nm by adjusting the input laser power ranging from 0.15 mW to 0.8 mW. Ultrashort pulse propagation in HNLF was simulated by numerical solving the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and the soliton self-frequency shifts were obtained for different input powers, which are compared with experimental results. The results show that the SSFS in HNLF has potential applications in practical tunable femtosecond pulse sources and all-optical analog-to-digital conversion.

Abstract:Broadband tunable ultrafast lasers using mid-infrared (MIR) fibers operating at a 3-5 mu m atmospheric transmission window are attractive sources because of their numerous applications. Tellurite fibers possess the merits of large linear and nonlinear refractive indices, sufficient chemical stability, and wide transparency range up to similar to 5 mu m; also, they are highly suitable for high efficiency MIR ultrafast fiber laser sources based on soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS). We numerically simulate SSFS of MIR femtosecond pulses in step-index tellurite optical fibers. A femtosecond erbium-doped fluoride fiber laser at 3.5 mu m is employed as the pump source. Parameters including the peak power of the input pulse and nonlinear fiber length are optimized for high efficiency broadband tunable MIR ultrafast laser performance. Our results show that a high-efficiency 3.5-6 mu m wavelength-tunable femtosecond laser can be realized by employing SSFS in a 22-cm-long segment of tellurite step-index fiber pumped by femtosecond pulses with 10-300 kW peak powers at 3.5 mu m. Ultra-high energy ratios of the most redshifted solitons to the input pulses of > 50% are obtained across the 3.5-5 mu m tuning range. The presented numerical study provides valuable guidance for SSFS of MIR femtosecond pulses in step-index tellurite fibers and is valuable for future high efficiency wavelength-tunable MIR ultrafast fiber laser development. The TMOF is tapered to offer an ideal environment for the formation of optical solitons. From similar to 30 to 80 mW, the redshift of the first fundamental soliton (SSFS) is obvious. From similar to 80 to 120 mW, two fundamental solitons are obtained by the fission of the higher-order solitons. The redshift of the first fundamental soliton almost stops because the increased pump power is preferentially distributed to the second fundamental soliton. Abstract:Recently, few-layer tungsten disulfide (WS2), as a shining 2D material, has been discovered to possess both the saturable absorption ability and large nonlinear refractive index. Here, we demonstrate versatile soliton pulses in a passively mode-locked fiber laser with a WS2-deposited microfiber. The few-layer WS2 is prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method and transferred onto a microfiber by the optical deposition method. Study found, the WS2-deposited microfiber can operate simultaneously as a mode-locker and a high-nonlinear device. In experiment, by further inserting the WS2 device into the fiber laser, besides the dual-wavelength soliton, noise-like soliton pulse, conventional soliton and its harmonic form are obtained by properly adjusting the pump strength and the polarization states. For the dual-wavelength soliton pulses and noise-like pulse, the maximum output power of 14.2 mW and pulse energy of 4.74 nJ is obtained, respectively. In addition, we also achieve the maximum harmonic number (135) of conventional soliton, corresponding to a repetition rate of ∼497.5 MHz. Our study shows clearly that WS2-deposited microfiber can be as a high-nonlinear photonic device for studying a plenty of nonlinear soliton phenomena.

Abstract:Femtosecond pulse propagation at lambda = 802 nm; in microstructured fiber (MF) with zero-dispersion wavelength at 780 nm is studied experimentally and numerically. The temporal and spectral distributions of the femtosecond pulse in MF are demonstrated by using a grating-eliminated no-nonsense observation of ultrafast incident laser light e-fields technique. Abstract:We demonstrate a highly efficient, stable, and tunable dispersive wave (DW) emitted by the soliton in a tellurite microstructured optical fiber.The dependence of the generated DW properties on the average pump power is experimentally investigated.By using the 80-MHz pulse emitted from an optical parametric oscillator as the pump source, the DW from $1626 to 1685 nm is obtained with the average pump power changing from $250 to 440 mW at the pump wavelength of $1760 nm.The conversion efficiency is over $65%.The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of DW pulse at the center wavelength of $1626 nm is $90 fs, which was measured by an intensity autocorrelator.The stable DW pulse can be used as a near-infrared femtosecond source.

Soliton self-frequency shift simulation of cascades of fluorotellurite fiber and chalcogenide fiber

Abstract:We numerically investigate a Raman soliton source cascaded by a fluorotellurite fiber and a chalcogenide fiber. By using a 2.8 μm fiber laser with a pulse width of 137 fs as the pump light, widely tunable Raman solitons spanning from 2.8 to 8.1μm are observed in the nonlinear media cascaded by 5 cm fluorotellurite fiber and 10 cm chalcogenide fiber. The pulse width of the red-shift soliton at 8.1 μm is 132 fs. For the first time we propose the idea of coupling the tellurite fiber and chalcogenide fiber to further enhance the SSFS effect in mid infrared region (MIR). Our simulated results show the possibility of generating long wavelength Raman soliton use a source cascaded by fluorotellurite fiber and chalcogenide fiber

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of stable single solitons and soliton molecules in a 2-mu m thulium-holmium-doped fiber laser mode-locked through the nonlinear polarization evolution technique within an anomalously dispersive cavity. Single 0.65 nJ solitons feature a 7.3 nm spectral FWHM and 540 fs temporal duration, yielding a time bandwidth product close to the Fourier-transform limitation. Under the same pumping power of 740 mW, stable out-of-phase twin-soliton molecules, featuring a temporal separation of 2.5 ps between the two similar to 700 fs pulses, are generated in a deterministic way, while the central wavelength of the soliton molecules can be tuned from 1920 to 1940 nm. Finally, we present strong experimental evidence of vibrating soliton molecules. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America
