Abstract:We report a dual-color femtosecond laser based on cross-mode-locking of a Ti:sapphire laser (850 nm) and a Cr:forsterite laser (1275 nm). They were synchronized at a repetition rate of 77 MHz by critically matching cavity lengths.

Abstract:We present a compact, all-solid-state femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser. The laser is pumped by diodes through a double-clad fiber. Kerr-lens mode locking is initiated and stabilized by a semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror with a single InGaAs quantum well. This system generates transform-limited 80-fs pulses near 1.3microm . An average power of 68 mW with fluctuation of much less than 1% is obtained with 3.8 W of absorbed pump power. The stability, efficiency, compactness, and potential for scaling to higher power of this system make it an attractive short-pulse source for applications.

Abstract:The experiment of the generation and amplification of femetosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulse at high repetition rate is reported. The laser pulses with minimum pulsewidth 15 fs, maximum spectrum width of 80 nm, average power of 200 mW are generated from a home-built self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. As a seed pulse which is selected from the oscillator, the laser pulse is further amplified by using chirped-pulse-amplification technology in a Ti:sapphire amplifier from which a kind of pulses with single-pulse-energy of 100 uj, pulsewidth after compressing of 50 fs at 5 kHz repetition rate are produced. The system design and experimental results are discussed.

Abstract:A cavity-dumped Kerr-lens Mode-Locked (KLM) Ti:S laser is demonstrated with an all solid-state continuous-wave 532nm laser as the pump resource. Stable mode-locked laser pulse with a peak power of 4.5MW was obtained under 5.4W pump power. The pulse duration width is shorter than 18fs and the repetition rates can be tuned as low as 20kHz. To our knowledge, this is the lowest repetition rate and the most compact size from the solid-state cavity-dumped femtosecond laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of sub-6-fs pulses centered at 405 nm by frequency doubling of 8.6-fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses. The frequency doubling is carried out in a nonlinearly chirped quasi-phase-matching grating fabricated in a lithium tantalate substrate. This device simultaneously provides frequency conversion and pulse compression of the positively prechirped fundamental pulses. The second-harmonic pulses are characterized in a cross-correlation setup, and their pulse shapes are retrieved by two iterative phase-reconstruction algorithms. The generated second-harmonic spectrum spans a bandwidth of 220 THz. To our knowledge, these are the shortest pulses ever generated in the blue spectral region.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact and efficient femtosecond laser operating at ~950 nm by directly frequency-doubling of a mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser. The laser is based on a highly compact architecture, with a dispersion-managed oscillator together with only one-step frequency conversion. The output pulse width is ~270 fs, with a repetition rate of 22.1 MHz and a pulse energy of 12.9 nJ. It is believed that the greatly simplified setup makes the current laser well suited for two-photon microscopy and other biomedical and clinical applications.

Abstract:A pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser mode locked by a novel nonlinear Michelson interferometer, where one branch contains a frequency-doubling potassium titanyl orthophosphate crystal, is reported for the first time. Under the optimal experimental condition, shorter than 10 ps average pulse width at 1·06 μm and up to 95% reproducibility of mode locking can be obtained, and the stability of output energy is about 7·5%. Finally, the reason why its mode-locking output characteristics have been significantly improved is also analysed in this paper.

Abstract:Frequency conversion based on three-wave mixing is a critical nonlinear optic application,extending the frequency range of existing lasers and realizing frequency-transduced detectors in a wavelength range that lacks an effective detector.Phase matching is vital for effective frequency conversion.The advantages of quasi-phase matching[QPM]over birefringent phase matching are a lack of walk-off effect,a maximum nonlinear coefficient,and phase matching in the entire trans-parency window.Herein,using different types and orders of QPM,four kinds of effective frequency doubling processes are realized in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate[KTP]crystal with a single period,and three kinds of frequency doubling processes are experimentally verified.We also show a feasible way to construct an RGB color generator based on two different QPM processes.This study significantly expands the feasible frequency conversion of existing lasers to different wavelengths,providing an effective method for multi-color laser generation based on periodically poled KTP crystals.

Abstract:The generation of mid-infrared pulsed lasers was achieved in a Ho3+:YAG laser pumped gain-switched Cr2+:CdSe laser system with the shortest pulse duration of 4.15 ns. With a pump pulse duration of 50 ns and pump power of 2.7 W, the gain-switched Cr2+:CdSe laser achieved over 10 times pulse narrowing, obtaining the maximum peak power of 5.7 kW. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency was 3.7%, which could be further improved with better crystal surface polishing quality. The laser central wavelength was measured to be 2.65 μm with a bandwidth (FWHM) of 50 nm. In addition, the parameter optimization for suppressing the pulse tail was discussed, while the long cavity and high output transmissivity contributed to obtaining the single-peak pulses.

Abstract:Frequency doubling in an external cavity is a prevalent method to generate an ultra-violet laser at 397.5 nm.A semi-monolithic resonant frequency doubling cavity based on the PPKTP crystal is built and is used to realize the resonant frequency doubling of the 795 nm single frequency continuous-wave laser amplified via a semiconductor tapered amplifier.Under the condition of 203 mW input power of a 795 nm laser,the 397.5 nm single frequency continuous-wave ultra-violet laser with a power of 60.4 mW is obtained,and the frequency doubling conversion efficiency is 30％;and the maximum doubling efficiency is 34.6％ with a fundamental power of about 87.5 mW.The beam quality factor M2 of the frequency doubling ultra-violet laser is superior to 1.21,indicating the better beam quality.The typical root-mean-square fluctuation of the output power within 30 min is less than 1.9％.This frequency doubler is compact,has good mechanical stability,and can be used to achieve steady output of ultraviolet laser.The ultra-violet laser can be used to generate the squeezed or entangled states of the rubidium transition line,and plays an important role in the quantum optics,precise measurement and other fields.

Abstract:We report on frequency doubling of 1.55-mu m fiber oscillator-amplifier laser with conversion efficiency of 27% by using off-the-shelf nonlinear crystal. The system generates 135-femto-second (fs) pulses with average power of 110 mW at 80 MHz repetition rate. Frequency doubling efficiency as a function of pulse pre-chirp in front of a single mode erbium fiber amplifier was investigated.

Abstract:Transform-limited, 18-fs pulses of 4.4-TW peak power are produced in a Ti:sapphire-based chirped-pulsed amplification system at a repetition rate of 50 Hz. Regenerative pulse shaping is used to control gain narrowing during amplification, and an optimized, quintic-phase-limited dispersion compensation scheme is used to control higher-order phase distortions over a bandwidth of ~100 nm. Seed pulses are temporally stretched >100,000 times before amplification.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an effective continuous-wave tunable operation and femtosecond passively mode-locked pulse from a Yb:CaF2-SrF2 mixed crystal laser for the first time. Pumped by a 977 nm fiber-coupled laser diode, a continuous-wave mode-locked pulse as short as 634 fs was generated. The shortest pulse operated under a repetition rate of 87 MHz at the central wavelength of 1047 nm. The calculated time-bandwidth product was 0.503, which was 1.6 times the Fourier transform-limited sech2-shaped pulses.

Abstract:The growing requirements of pump-probe techniques and nonlinear optics experiments greatly promote the studies of two-color free-electron lasers (FELs). We propose a new method to generate coherent two-color pulses in a high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) FEL. In this scheme, an initial tilted electron beam is sent though the modulator and dispersive section of an HGHG FEL to generate the bunching at harmonics of the seed laser. Then a transverse gradient undulator (TGU) is adopted as the radiator and in such radiator, only two separated fractions of the tilted beam will resonate at two adjacent harmonics of the seed laser and are enabled to emit the coherent two-color pulses simultaneously. The time separation between the two pulses are on the order of hundreds of femtoseconds, and can be precisely controlled by varying the tilted amplitude of the electron beam and/or the transverse gradient of the TGU radiator. Numerical simulations confirm the validity and feasibility of this scheme in the extreme ultraviolet waveband.

Abstract:An amplified femtosecond pulse sequence is generated in a multi-TW Ti: sapphire chirped pulse amplification system (JG-II facility). The pulse interval of the pulse sequence is 14.8 ns, corresponding to a frequency of 67.5 MHz. The compressed pulse sequence can reach 122 mJ in 19 independent pulses with a pulse width of about 60 fs. The energy of the pulses declines from 20 mJ to 0.5 mJ, corresponding to a peak power from 10(11) W to 10(10) W. The pulse sequence has important applications in lengthening the lifetime of the laser produced plasma channel in air and in microfabrication.

Abstract:We investigate an all-solid-state continuous wave (cw) green (532 nm), femtosecond near-infrared (823.1 nm) and blue (402 nm) laser system which is pumped by a diode-laser-pumped intracavity frequency-doubled and all-self-structuring cw Nd:YVO4/KTP 532 nm green laser. The cavity parameters of the Nd:YVO4/KTP laser have been optimized and the maximum 5.6 W TEM00 green laser is obtained at a 22 W pump power with an optical-optical conversion efficiency of 25.5%. A Ti:Sapphire laser and nonlinear second-harmonic generation by a crystal 13130 is used to obtain different wavelengths. A femtosecond laser with an average output power of 300 mW at 823.1 nm and 73 mW at 402 nm is obtained when the green pump power is 2.5 W. The spectral full width at half maximum are 32.3 nm and 5.1 nm, which can sustain the pulses of 22 fs and 33.3 fs, respectively.

Abstract:Multi-color ultrashort pulses with GHz repetition rates are promising for spectroscopic and four-wave-mixing-based applications that specifically require both fast transient response and fast refresh rate. Among existing technologies for generating multi-color ultrashort pulses, actively synchronizing multiple lasers operating at different wavelengths advances in the technical simplicity, and shows a high coherence. However, for GHz repetition rates, the short cavity design, on one hand, is sensitive to environmental perturbations that change the cavity length (thus the repetition rate); on the other hand, it challenges the active repetition-rate synchronization by adding extra free-space components. In this work, we demonstrate long-term stable synchronization between a Yb-doped GHz-repetition-rate modelocked fiber laser and an Er-doped GHz-repetition-rate modelocked fiber laser. The stable active synchronization is realized by using the phase-locked-loop technology that is implemented for short fiber cavities. The repetition rates of the two short fiber laser cavities can be stably locked with millihertz precision and a timing jitter of about 20 fs.
