Abstract:A cavity-dumped Kerr-lens Mode-Locked (KLM) Ti:S laser is demonstrated with an all solid-state continuous-wave 532nm laser as the pump resource. Stable mode-locked laser pulse with a peak power of 4.5MW was obtained under 5.4W pump power. The pulse duration width is shorter than 18fs and the repetition rates can be tuned as low as 20kHz. To our knowledge, this is the lowest repetition rate and the most compact size from the solid-state cavity-dumped femtosecond laser.

Abstract:A high-power and high-repetition-rate widely tunable narrow-linewidth low-gain-band Ti: sapphire laser dual-end pumped by a 10 kHz 532 nm pulsed laser with an output wavelength of 690–760 nm was demonstrated. A seed-self-injection coupled cavity based on a Littman grating and dispersive prism was employed to narrow the output linewidth. When the pump power was 40.1 W, a maximum output power of 1.89 W at 730 nm was obtained with a linewidth of 1.5 pm and a pulse duration of 38.7 ns. The corresponding conversion efficiency was 4.71 %, and the beam quality in the x and y directions was 1.94 and 1.91, respectively. By successively rotating the front cavity mirror and broadband total reflector, a stable near-single-longitudinal-mode output of 690–760 nm could be achieved, with a maximum power of 2.35 W at 760 nm.

Abstract:The experiment of the generation and amplification of femetosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulse at high repetition rate is reported. The laser pulses with minimum pulsewidth 15 fs, maximum spectrum width of 80 nm, average power of 200 mW are generated from a home-built self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. As a seed pulse which is selected from the oscillator, the laser pulse is further amplified by using chirped-pulse-amplification technology in a Ti:sapphire amplifier from which a kind of pulses with single-pulse-energy of 100 uj, pulsewidth after compressing of 50 fs at 5 kHz repetition rate are produced. The system design and experimental results are discussed.

Abstract:We present a novel high-power, self-starting mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser with a semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror as the starter element. This laser, whose slope efficiency is 22%, generates pulses with an average power as high as 1.7 W and a pulse width as short as 16 fs. The self-starting process is also investigated.

Abstract:The behaviors of Ti:sapphire laser operating at continuous wave and mode locking state in its low gain region are reported. Pumped by 14.5 W from the all-line of argon-ion laser, a stable laser pulse train centered at 0.94 μm, with pulse duration of 37 fs, bandwidth of 33 nm, average power of 80 mW, and a tuning range from 0.9 μm to 0.976 μm has been obtained.

Abstract:In quest of achieving compact and economic PW-level Ti:Sapphire (Ti:sa) lasers with a sub-15 fs pulse duration, a modified hybrid amplification scheme, which combines the optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA) and the chirped pulse amplifier (CPA), is presented and numerically investigated in this paper. The key characteristic of this scheme is that the conventional Ti:sa regenerative amplifier and preamplifier are replaced by a dual-crystal OPCPA front-end, which is spectrally matched with the upstream seed source and the downstream Ti:sa amplifiers and, therefore, can realize a broader spectrum. Moreover, some useful laser techniques are also applied to suppress the spectral gain narrowing and redshift in the Ti:sa CPA chain and to control the residual dispersion in the laser system. This way, fewer amplification stages and pump lasers are required to reach PW-level peak power compared with traditional all-CPA Ti:sa lasers. Numerical results indicate that pulse energy and spectral bandwidth can reach up to ∼22 J and ∼125 nm at full width at half maximum (FWHM), respectively, only by employing three-stage amplifiers. After compression, PW-level lasers with a ∼13.3 fs pulse duration are expected. This work can offer a promising route for the development of compact and economic PW-level Ti:sa lasers.

Abstract:Stable self-starting mode-locking states in a compact Ti: sapphire laser incorporating a home-made SBR with low loss double quantum-well and low temperature and surface state hybrid absorber are investigated experimentally. The three mode-locking states, i.e. the passive mode-locking with a saturable absorber, the solition mode-locking and the Kerr-lens mode-locking have been successfully demonstrated. In this laser, chirped mirrors are used for dispersion compensation, and the 18 fs pulses are produced from the Kerr-lens mode-locking at 4.5W pump power, and output power is 150mW.

Abstract:We report the 8-fs pulse generation from a Ti:sapphire oscillator by use of the broadband chirped mirrors(CM) and fused-silica prism-pair to optimize the dispersion compensation.The laser operated at a central wavelength of 780 nm with the widest bandwidth of 180 nm.The output power was 280 mW under a pump power of 3.5 W.Additionally,a distinctive feature is that the oscillator can stably operate with the saddle spectrum.This is beneficial to suppress the spectrum gain narrowing in the chirped pulse amplification system when the oscillator is used as a seed pulse source.

Abstract:Techniques for the production of multiterawatt, sub-20-fs, optical pulses via chirped pulse amplification are discussed. Regenerative pulse shaping is used to control gain narrowing during amplification and an optimized, quintic-phase-limited, dispersion compensation scheme is used to control higher order phase distortions over a bandwidth of approximately 100 nm. Transform-limited, 18-fs pulses of 4.4-TW peak power have been produced in a Ti:sapphire- based, chirped pulse amplification system at a repetition rate of 50 Hz. Extensions to shorter durations and peak powers approaching 100 TW are also described.

Abstract:A high-pulse-energy high-beam-quality tunable Ti:sapphire laser pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. Using a fused-silica prism as the dispersion element, a tuning range of 740-855nm is obtained. At an incident pump energy of 774 mJ, the maximum output energy of 104mJ at 790nm with a pulse width of 100 mu s is achieved at a repetition rate of 5 Hz. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest pulse energy at 790nm with pulse width of hundred micro-seconds for an all-solid-state laser. The linewidth of output is 0.5 nm, and the beam quality factor M-2 is 1.16. The high-pulse-energy high-beam-quality tunable Ti: sapphire laser in the range of 740-855nm can be used to establish a more accurate and consistent absolute scale of second-order optical-nonlinear coefficients for KBe2BO3F2 measured in a wider wavelength range and to assess Miller's rule quantitatively.

Abstract:An efficient chirped-pulse amplification, Ti: sapphire laser system, has been developed using mainly domestic components. The gain-narrowing effect has been significantly overcome by shaping spectrum of seeding pulses. With a novel aberration-free stretcher and two stage multi-pass amplifiers, pulses with duration of 25 fs and 36-mJ energy have been obtained at 10 Hz repetition rate, using only less than 290 mJ green Nd:YAG pump energy. This corresponds to a 1.4 TW peak power and 32% main amplification efficiency. The energy stability of the laser systems is better than ± 3%.

Abstract:We report on an experimental and theoretical study of a large-aperture Ti:Sapphire (Ti:S) amplifier pumped with a novel temporal dual-pulse scheme to suppress the parasitic lasing (PL) and transverse amplified spontaneous emission (TASE) for high-energy chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). The pump energy distribution was optimized and the time delay between each pump pulse was controlled precisely. Both the numerical and experimental results confirm that the temporal dual-pulse pump technique can effectively suppress PL and TASE. The maximum output energy of 202.8 J was obtained from the final 150-mm-diameter Ti:S booster amplifier with a pump energy of 320.0 J, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 49.3%. The compressed pulse duration of 24.0 fs was measured with a throughput efficiency of 64%, leading to a peak power of 5.4 PW. This novel temporal dual-pulse pump technique has potential applications in a 10 PW CPA laser system.

Abstract:Pico-second solid-state lasers with multi-watt average power and multi-kilowatt peak power are required for numerous applications such as UV generation and pumping of optical parametric oscillators for RGB laser TV display. In the past few years laser diode bars as pump source with continue output power of hundreds watts or more have become commercially available. LD side pumping YAG laser module can be used to generate high reputation mode locked output pulse with SESAM (Semiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror) as an end cavity mirror. In this paper, we demonstrate an all solid-state mode-locked YAG laser with three-mirror folded cavity with a SESAM mirror, 80MHz pulse rate, about 10ps pulse width, and 2W 1064 nn output power. Thermal effect of laser rod, and polarization of intra-cavity beam are considered in laser cavity design. The enhancement of laser performance and decreasing Q switching effect are discussed. Further investigation is greatly needed.

Abstract:Abstract We obtained the output of single frequency laser pulses with an average pulse-width of 136 ps and the minimum of 123 ps based on stimulated Brillouin scattering pulse compression pumped by an 8 ns-pulse-width, 1064 nm-wavelength Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The pulse-width stability of the output is about 4.1% while that of the pump pulses is about 1.1%, the highest energy conversion efficiency is about 85%, and the single pulse energy is above 300 mJ.

Abstract:We report on the laser pulse output of 339 J centered at 800 nm from a chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) Ti:sapphire laser system at the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility. The experimental results demonstrated that the parasitic lasing as well as the transverse amplified spontaneous emission of the homemade 235-mm-diameter Ti:sapphire final amplifier were suppressed successfully via the temporal dual-pulse pumped scheme and the index-matching liquid cladding technique. The maximum pump-to-signal conversion efficiency of 32.1% was measured for the final amplifier. With a compressor transmission efficiency of 64% and a compressed pulse duration of 21 fs obtained for the sample light at a lower energy level, this laser system could potentially generate a compressed laser pulse with a peak power of 10.3 PW. The experimental results represent significant progress with respect to the CPA laser.

Abstract:A high-stability and high-efficiency ring Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier is demonstrated based on a double-gating pulse picker at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. Pulse energy up to 5.7 mJ is obtained using a pump energy of 20.0 mJ at 527 nm, corresponding to a relatively high slope efficiency of 30.3%. After a grating compressor, the laser pulse is compressed to 37.2 fs with an energy of 4.1 mJ. The beam quality factors M(2) are 1.4 and 1.3 in tangential and sagittal directions, respectively. The measured root mean square energy stability is better than 0.31% over an 11 h period.

Abstract:In an end-pumped 20-mm-cavity-length acoustooptically Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser, 4.5-ns pulses at a 500-kHz repetition rate with a 5-kW peak power are produced. The pulse width is <10 ns at repetition rates lower than 1.1 MHz. The short cavity results in a short roundtrip time of light within the cavity and a high gain with a modest pump power, and both are essential for short-pulse and high-repetition rate operation. The output pulse width versus the pump power and repetition rate is experimentally studied. The output transmission also has a considerable influence on the pulse width and shape, and there exists an optimum transmission for the shortest pulse width and symmetrical pulse shape.

Abstract:A typical self-mode-locked vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser must operate at the edge of the stable region of the resonant cavity. Its minimal pump spot on the gain chip is used as a soft aperture. By comparing with a continuous-wave (CW) laser, the pulsed laser is focused more tightly on the gain chip due to the Kerr-lens effect. This mitigates cavity loss of the pulsed laser in comparison with the CW laser, such that successive mode-locking can be initiated. The disadvantage of the above method is that the relatively small pump spot, producing relatively large thermal effect, limits the output power of the laser. To address this issue, we propose another method with the work point of the laser moved slightly from the edge of the stable region and the pump spot moderately extended, with a spot of the pulsed laser on the gain chip that could be smaller or larger than that of the CW laser. We achieve stable self-mode-locking with a record average output power of 8.18 W in a V-type resonator, limited by the applied pump power. The pulse repetition rate and width are 0.71 GHz and 1.92 ps, respectively, and the corresponding peak power is 5.6 kW.

Abstract:In this letter, a tunable Ti:sapphire laser pumped by a frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at a repetition rate of 10 Hz is demonstrated. By using two dense flint glass prisms as dispersion element, a tuning range from 745 to 855 nm with a linewidth of 0.8 nm (FWHM) was achieved. At an incident pump energy of 40 mJ, the maximum output energy was 5.5 mJ at 800 nm with a pulse width of 23.8 ns (FWHM), which led to a slope efficiency of 36.4% from the 532 nm pump laser to the Ti:sapphire laser.
