Abstract:We present a loadable and erasable all-optical fiber storage buffer based on parametric gain and cross-phase modulation (XPM) loading. The gain is provided by a phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA), implemented as a Sagnac interferometer, and relies on the nonlinear interaction within standard dispersion-shifted fiber. PSAs inherently have the property of stabilizing ones and zeros and thus eliminate the need to use optical filters within the buffer, or the need for any other kind of intensity discriminator. The action of the PSA is then twofold. It provides the gain and also achieves bistability of the buffer, which gives it an advantage over a linear amplifier such as erbium-doped fiber amplifier for our experimental configuration. External data are written into the buffer using wavelength-induced XPM. This method is insensitive to the optical phase of the incoming data and thus does not require tracking of its phase. The buffer is erased by employing a nonlinear optical loop mirror as a switch. We demonstrate storage of picosecond pulse packets at bit rates of 1 Gb/s for periods of time up to 1 ms.

Abstract:A method for storing optical data pulse sequences, frequency shifted with respect to the original data pulse frequency, is theoretically described and experimentally demonstrated. Data pulses are converted into long-living acoustic waves via stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fiber by counterpropagating write pulses of one frequency, and later they are retrieved by read pulses at a different frequency giving rise to frequency-shifted stored pulses. The shifted frequency is governed by the phase-matching condition between the read pulse and the acoustic wave, which can be satisfied using birefringent fibers. The converted frequency is +/-52 GHz and is tuned by applying strain to the fiber with a slope coefficient of +/-1.8 MHz/micro epsilon, and conversion efficiency can be as high as 13% for the storage time of 8-25 ns.

Abstract:Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power efficiency of 1155%; this allows the generation of intense femtosecond pulses without the need for a pulse stretcher and compressor. Direct femtosecond signal amplification by picosecond pumping is enabled by an ultrafast parametric environment in which the pre-delayed signal of faster speed gradually overtakes and effectively depletes the pump of slower speed as they propagate in a nonlinear crystal. The demonstrated technique should lead to breakthroughs in ultrafast lasers as well as applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the use of optical fiber for optical parametric chirped pulse amplification to amplify subpicosecond pulses. We use this system to amplify a subpicosecond signal at 1595 nm generated by a fiber-optical parametric oscillator. The 750-fs signal from the oscillator output is stretched to 40 ps, amplified by an all-fiber optical parametric amplifier and then compressed to 808 fs. The peak power of the signal is amplified from 93 mW to 10 W.

Abstract:Ultrashort lasers have become powerful tools by inducing extremely nonlinear effects in a wide variety of materials. Femtosecond laser data storage in non-photosensitive media is promising for its high density and fast retrieval. We reviewed the progress of three types of femtosecond laser storage in transparent materials: three-dimensional bit-oriented storage by micro-voids, holographic data storage by two beam interference and storage by computer-generated holograms.

Abstract:We demonstrate soliton-effect compression of picosecond pulses using ultralow loss dispersion-engineered 40-cm-long silicon-nitride nanowaveguides. We show compression by factors of 21× of 1 ps pulses using pulse energies as low as 18 pJ.

Abstract:Photons with zero rest mass are impossible to be stopped. However, a pulse of light can be slowed down and even halted through strong light-matter interaction in a dispersive medium in atomic systems. Exceptional point (EP), a non-Hermitian singularity point, can introduce an abrupt transition in dispersion. Here we experimentally observe room-temperature storing light near an exceptional point induced by nonlinear Brillouin scattering in a chip-scale 90-μm-radius optical microcavity, the smallest platform up to date to store light. Through nonlinear coupling, a Parity-Time (PT) symmetry can be constructed in optical-acoustical hybrid modes, where Brillouin scattering-induced absorption (BSIA) can lead to both slow light and fast light of incoming pulses. A subtle transition of slow-to-fast light reveals a critical point for storing a light pulse up to half a millisecond. This compact and room-temperature scheme of storing light paves the way for practical applications in all-optical communications and quantum information processing.

Abstract:A novel ultra-broadband optical parametric amplifier (OPA), which directly amplifies non-chirped femtosecond signal pulses by using picosecond pumping pulses at a wavelength corresponding to the second-harmonic of the signal, is proposed and studied numerically. The OPA is capable of supporting amplification of few-cycle femtosecond pulses and can be highly efficient due to the sweep of the signal within the picosecond pump pulse resulting from the group-velocity mismatch.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband all-fiber-optical parametric amplifier for ultrafast time-stretch imaging at 1.0 μm, featured by its compact design, alignment-free, high efficiency, and flexible gain spectrum through fiber nonlinearity- and dispersion-engineering: specifically on a dispersion-stabilized photonic-crystal fiber (PCF) to achieve a net gain over 20 THz (75 nm) and a highest gain of ~6000 (37.5 dB). Another unique feature of the parametric amplifier, over other optical amplifiers, is the coherent generation of a synchronized signal replica (called idler) that can be exploited to offer an extra 3-dB gain by optically superposing the signal and idler. It further enhances signal contrast and temporal stability. For proof-of-concept purpose, ultrahigh speed and diffraction-limited time-stretch microscopy is demonstrated with a single-shot line-scan rate of 13 MHz based on the dual-band (signal and idler) detection. Our scheme can be extended to other established bioimaging modalities, such as optical coherence tomography, near infrared fluorescence, and photoacoustic imaging, where weak signal detection at high speed is required.

Abstract:We discus an all-optical flip-flop memory and a wavelength converter based on nonlinear polarization rotation in a semiconductor optical amplifier. The flip-flop is realized from two coupled polarization switches. The concept is explained and experimental results are presented that demonstrate that a contrast ratio of over 20 dB and a switching power of less than -3 dBm can be obtained. The all-optical wavelength converter employs a single polarization switch. We show that error-free inverted and non-inverted wavelength conversion can be realized at a data-rate of 10 Gbit/s. Both optical signal-processing functionalities can be utilized in all-optical packet switches.

Abstract:We first demonstrate a wideband generation of picosecond pulse using fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA). High quality pulse is generated at 85 nm away from the pump with pulsewidth narrower than that of the pump. We then explore fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) configuration which has the advantage of eliminating the need of seeding laser, leading to a potentially wider wavelength tunability and flexibility. The tuning range of the FOPO is from 1511 nm to 1541 nm and from 1583 nm to 1613 nm, which is as wide as 60 nm, with wavelength span of over 100 nm. Nearly-transform-limited sub-picosecond pulses are generated by this technique.

Abstract:We present some progress in the field of optical signal processing that could be; utilized in all-optical packet switching. We demonstrate error-free 160 Gb/s optical wavelength conversion employing a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The gain recovery time of the semiconductor optical amplifier is greater than 90 ps. Assisted by an optical bandpass filter, an effective recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in the wavelength converter, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to route 80 Gb/s data-packets all-optically. The routing is realized without electronic control. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We demonstrate that the integrated flip-flop is able to control the optical wavelength converter up to 160 Gb/s. The system is capable of routing 80 Gb/s data packets with duration of 35 ns, separated by 15 ns of guard time.

Abstract:Photonic memory is an important building block to delay, route and buffer optical information, for instance in optical interconnects or for recurrent optical signal processing. Photonic-phononic memory based on stimulated Brillouin-Mandelstam scattering (SBS) has been demonstrated as a coherent optical storage approach with broad bandwidth, frequency selectivity and intrinsic nonreciprocity. Here, we experimentally demonstrated the storage of quadrature-phase encoded data at room temperature and at cryogenic temperatures. We store and retrieve the 2-bit states $\{00, 01, 10, 11\}$ encoded as optical pulses with the phases $\{0, {\pi}/2 , {\pi}, 3{\pi}/2\}$ - a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal. The 2-bit signals are retrieved from the acoustic domain with a global phase rotation of ${\pi}$, which is inherent in the process due to SBS. We also demonstrate full phase control over the retrieved data based on two different handles: by detuning slightly from the SBS resonance, or by changing the storage time in the memory scheme we can cover the full range $[0, 2{\pi})$. At a cryogenic temperature of 3.9 K, we have increased readout efficiency as well as gained access to longer storage times, which results in a detectable signal at 140 ns. All in all, the work sets the cornerstone for optoacoustic memory schemes with phase-encoded data

Abstract:A synchronously pumped picosecond fiber-optical parametric oscillator was demonstrated with fixed pump wavelength and with a 50-m highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber as parametric gain medium. Time-dispersion-tuning offered a continuously wavelength tuning range as wide as 150 nm from 1413 to 1478 nm and from 1610 to 1695 nm with a pulsewidth of 10 ps.

Abstract:We describe a novel technique for generating ultrahigh-speed bit-by-bit optical phase correlated data signals based on cross-phase modulation induced nonlinear polarization rotation between a pump and a continuous-wave light.
