Abstract:We present a loadable and erasable all-optical fiber storage buffer based on parametric gain and cross-phase modulation (XPM) loading. The gain is provided by a phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA), implemented as a Sagnac interferometer, and relies on the nonlinear interaction within standard dispersion-shifted fiber. PSAs inherently have the property of stabilizing ones and zeros and thus eliminate the need to use optical filters within the buffer, or the need for any other kind of intensity discriminator. The action of the PSA is then twofold. It provides the gain and also achieves bistability of the buffer, which gives it an advantage over a linear amplifier such as erbium-doped fiber amplifier for our experimental configuration. External data are written into the buffer using wavelength-induced XPM. This method is insensitive to the optical phase of the incoming data and thus does not require tracking of its phase. The buffer is erased by employing a nonlinear optical loop mirror as a switch. We demonstrate storage of picosecond pulse packets at bit rates of 1 Gb/s for periods of time up to 1 ms.

Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a 10-Gb/s optically controlled buffer using a photonic-crystal-fiber (PCF)-based nonlinear optical loop mirror for all-optical packet- switched networks. The 10-Gb/s data can be stored in the buffer up to a period of 2.5 s. By using the cross-phase modulation prop- erty between the control signal and the data signal inside the PCF, the total length of the fiber used in the buffer can be shortened to 30.9 m. The stored data packets are retrieved after they are stored in the memory for and round-trips. Indepen- dent bit-error-rate (BER) measurements have been carried out. The maximum power penalty is 3.3 dB at 1550 nm. The proposed buffer is wavelength transparent. For data packets stored in the -band, the maximum power penalty after the data are stored in the memory for 12 round-trips is 3.5 dB at the BER of .

Abstract:Buffering of a 2.5 Gb/s bit stream with non-return-to-zero format is numerically demonstrated based on stimulated- Brillouin-scattering-induced acoustic storage in an As2Se3 fiber. The storage process and the retrieval process of the bit stream are separately controlled by a "write" pulse and a "read" pulse. Simulation results show that output signal-to-noise ratio of 21 dB, 18 dB, 16 dB, and readout efficiency of 71%, 47%, 31% can be achieved after 5-ns, 10-ns, 15-ns storage, respectively. The "write" and "read" pulses are chirped Gaussian ones with single pulse energy of ~0.25 muJ and spectrum-width of ~5 GHz, which are technically achievable. Buffering of a consecutive 10- bit-long 2.5 Gb/s non-return-to-zero bit stream has also been demonstrated in the As2Se3 fiber with length of 0.5 m. This buffering method can be used for all-optical buffering in optical communication systems.

Abstract:The lack of optical buffer is still one of the main problems that hinder the development of all optical networks. Current works on this topic mainly focus on the emulation of optical buffers based on a combination of fiber delay line (FDL) and switch. These works have demonstrated the feasibility of FDL-based emulation for many kinds of optical buffers, like the First In First Out (FIFO) buffer, Priority buffer, etc. The Last In First Out (LIFO) buffer is another basic network component for congestion control and QoS guarantee. Recently, Huang et al. [1] introduced a recursive construction for the LIFO buffer, which requires no less than 9 log(2) B FDLs to build such a buffer of size B. In this paper, we first show that by a proper FDL grouping and a suitable FDL length assignment for each FDL-group, we need approximately 3 log(2) B FDLs to emulate a LIFO buffer of size B. We then demonstrate that if a careful packet scheduling among FDL-groups is adopted, this number of FDLs can be further reduced to 2 log(2) B.

Abstract:Buffers represent one of the most important components in a communications router. The device must be able to store data packets for a substantial period of time and release the data within an acceptable delay when the switch is clear. Optical buffers—devices that store optically transmitted data—are considered key elements to achieve synchronized and contention-free traffic in the design of all-light-based communication networks. Conventional buffers use optical fiber delay lines, but since the delay is for a fixed amount of time, they are unable to guarantee contention-free connections in the switch or through a network. Hence, research on tunable optical delay lines is generating significant interest, especially with optical communications now gearing up for large-scale integration. Advances in silicon technology are making this material a choice candidate for future integrated photonics. On-chip delay lines based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonic wire waveguides were recently demonstrated, consisting of up to 100 microring resonators cascaded in either coupled-resonator or all-pass filter (APF) configurations with error-free operation up to 5Gbps.1 This demonstration was a major milestone in the development of all-optical buffers for interconnects. Tunable delays in an SOI planar waveguide based on slow light induced by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) have also been reported,2 as well as intensity-tunable group delays in siliconmicroresonators enhanced by SRS.3 The functional mechanism of a ring resonator-based optical delay line can be described as follows: When a probe beam is injected into a ring with a frequency matching the resonance of the ring, light is forced to circle multiple times, lengthening the delay. If beam frequency deviates from resonance, it will bypass the ring and no delay will occur. When a pump light, whose frequency is of a different resonance, is injected into the microring resonator, the absorbed energy is eventually converted to therFigure 1. Abstract:We present some progress in the field of optical signal processing that could be; utilized in all-optical packet switching. We demonstrate error-free 160 Gb/s optical wavelength conversion employing a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The gain recovery time of the semiconductor optical amplifier is greater than 90 ps. Assisted by an optical bandpass filter, an effective recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in the wavelength converter, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to route 80 Gb/s data-packets all-optically. The routing is realized without electronic control. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We demonstrate that the integrated flip-flop is able to control the optical wavelength converter up to 160 Gb/s. The system is capable of routing 80 Gb/s data packets with duration of 35 ns, separated by 15 ns of guard time.

Abstract:We discus an all-optical flip-flop memory and a wavelength converter based on nonlinear polarization rotation in a semiconductor optical amplifier. The flip-flop is realized from two coupled polarization switches. The concept is explained and experimental results are presented that demonstrate that a contrast ratio of over 20 dB and a switching power of less than -3 dBm can be obtained. The all-optical wavelength converter employs a single polarization switch. We show that error-free inverted and non-inverted wavelength conversion can be realized at a data-rate of 10 Gbit/s. Both optical signal-processing functionalities can be utilized in all-optical packet switches.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable optical buffer with variable time delays for label switching applications using an optical single sideband modulator in a fiber Bragg grating-filter loop. This optical buffer realizes payload storage with optional wavelength conversion function, providing flexibility in packet router design. Small sensitivity penalty is observed in our experiment after the payload circulating in the buffer loop three times. The cascadability of the tunable optical buffer is investigated. We provide analysis of the optical signal to noise ratio degradation due to accumulated amplified spontaneous emission noise, and the penalty caused by loss ripple and group delay ripple of the fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:We report a fiber loop quantum buffer based on a low-loss 2×2 switch and a unit delay made of a fiber delay line. We characterize the device by using a two-photon polarization entangled state in which one photon of the entangled photon pair is stored and retrieved at a repetition rate up to 78 kHz. The device, which enables integer multiples of a unit delay, can store the qubit state in a unit of fiber delay line up to 5.4 km and the number of loop round-trips up to 3. Furthermore, we configure the device with other active elements to realize integer multiplier and divider of a unit delay of a qubit. The quantum state tomography is performed on the retrieved photon and its entangled photon. We obtain a state fidelity > 94% with a maximum storage time of 52 μsec with an insertion loss of 5.56 dB. To further characterize the storing and retrieving processes of the device, we perform entanglement-assisted quantum process tomography on the buffered qubit state. The process fidelity of the device is > 0.98. Our result implies that the device preserves the superposition and entanglement of a qubit state from a two-photon polarization-entangled state. This is a significant step towards facilitating applications in optical asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) based quantum networks.

Abstract:In this investigation, all-optical Toggle flip-flop event-driven memory is explored with data rate of 16 Gbit/s. Single mode optical fiber model is used as a nonlinear medium to generate the output set and reset pulses of a Toggle flip-flop, and the model is based on the bidirectional optical transmission principle, considering the fundamental effects of cross phase modulation and self-phase modulation with change in polarization state. The performance of a flip-flop is evaluated using truth table conditions and performance parameters such as Q factor, which is obtained as 380.92 dB for Q and 272.9 dB for , and rising and falling times of 7.304 ps and 5.79 ps, respectively are obtained, which makes flip-flop design fast as compared to earlier design techniques.

Abstract:We describe a novel, fully-packaged, hybrid-integrated all-optical flip-flop memory element. Static state contrast ratios of 10dB and 13dB are demonstrated and the flip-flop can have its state changed dynamically every 32ns with the introduction of state-setting pulses (pulse widths ≪150ps).

Abstract:We discuss how all-optical signal processing might play a role in future all-optical packet switched networks. We introduce a concept of optical packet switches that employ entirely all-optical signal processing technology. The optical packet switch is made out of three functional blocks: the optical header processing block, the optical memory block and the wavelength conversion block. The operation principle of the optical packet switch is explained. We show that these three functional blocks can be realized by using the nonlinearities of semiconductor optical amplifiers. Some technologies in these three functional blocks are described. The header processor is realized using a Terahertz Optical Asymmetric Demultiplexer. We also describe a header pre-processor to improve the extinction ratio of the header processor output. In the optical memory block, we show that an all-optical memory can be obtained by using two coupled lasers that form a master-slave configuration. The state of the optical memory is distinguished by the wavelength of the master laser. We extend the concept to an optical memory can have multiple states. In the wavelength conversion block, we demonstrate a 160 Gbit/s wavelength conversion using a single semiconductor optical amplifier in combination with a well-designed optical bandpass filter. The semiconductor optical amplifier has a gain recovery time greater than 90 ps, which corresponds to a less than 20 GHz bandwidth for conventional wavelength conversion. We show that by properly using the optical bandpass filter, ultrafast dynamics in the semiconductor optical amplifier can be employed for wavelength conversion at ultrahigh bit-rates.
